    Firstly, I never write reviews.

But I'm bored of the same old thing. This is like every other kiwi movie ever. It's been done. Small town. Farms. Kiwi pub (bought to you by Tui). Few laughs, just cringy and embarrassed to think this is how people think we live in NZ.

Change the narrative - I know we're a young country but can't we find something new to talk about. Does it always have to portray us as hick country folk. I don't associate with that and doubt many Nzers will as well.

The funniest moment was right at the end when wife corrected husband saying pear is not a stone fruit. You get the picture....

Not sure I like the third person talk to camera style. The general vibe and visual style is true to type . I was born in the town this movie was filmed but I lived in another town. And the actual shots I don't recognise but the visual palate the cinematographer uses is instantly recognisable . It does seem in some ways similar to the movie Fargo but cleary references the "Bain case" Fargo had tension from clear and present danger this movie did not, and some of the performances for me lacked a sense of discovery but I wonder if that is my familiarity with the setting. Stylistically there is some time travelling going on between 1980 and 2020 for me that was ok I liked the closure of the movie narratively
  • I do love Kiwi humour and comedy. "This Town" has it in spades and delivers it in a unique mockumentary style which suits the comedy style perfectly.

It reminded me a little of "Eagle vs Shark" mixed with the Rhys Darby series "Short Poppies" (if murder was involved). There are numerous laugh out loud moments and enough quirkiness to make you smile. It begins strong and ends strong.

It's fairly easy to watch and the short runtime ensures you're never too bored. It does lose its way in the middle though and begins to take itself too seriously. It goes a little too long between laughs, and when you're talking of massacres and grief so much, it gets a bit depressing.

If you're a fan of New Zealand comedy and dark, dry humour then you might like this. Unique rom-com.
  • You might feel a bit bored at the beginning as much as intriguied, please don't worry about it, this movie delivers and it does on the best way it could ever be delivered.

Well done to the actors and the director, if you like life with a bit of spice and controversy... That just watch it and you not being let down.
  • If you love Kiwi slow, quiet, quirky movies this is for you. I love the beautifully framed shots, bright colours, and gorgeous scenery. Enchanting characters, nice storyline where I cared to see what happened; but mostly I cared to see the love story unfold. Props to the team that made this - more please 💗💗

Absolutely hilarious movie! Not sure if anyone that doesn't live in NZ will get it but still worth a watch... :)
  • I loved this movie!! Great kiwi humour and a surprising twist at the end. I'm from a small town so I loved the characters and all the funny signs in the background.
