Luca Guadagnino and Lionsgate announced that the “Call Me by Your Name” and “Queer” director is in final discussions to film a new version of Bret Eason Ellis’ dark horror novel “American Psycho,” nearly 25 years after the same company released Mary Harron’s satirical adaptation. In a key role that elevated his career, the 2000 film starred Christian Bale as yuppie investment banker-turned-serial killer Patrick Bateman.
It’s the kind of announcement destined to raise eyebrows. Guadagnino is in a career sweet spot after “Challengers” and “Queer” this year (and “After the Hunt” in post); he already has many projects in the works, including “Separate Rooms” with Josh O’Connor and a Thomas Mann adaptation in early development. So why is he choosing a remake — and for a film that doesn’t seem that long ago?
New versions of older films are not unusual. Even the word “remake” is tricky here — does that apply with adaptations?...

Luca Guadagnino is becoming an Italian Psycho.
The “Queer” and “Challengers” filmmaker is in final negotiations to sign on for an “American Psycho” adaptation at Lionsgate, Deadline reports.
Guadagnino’s take is described as a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 novel, about a Wall Street investment banker who moonlights as a serial killer. Scott Z. Iranian artist and filmmaker Shahab Fotouhi’s “Boomerang” has debuted an exclusive clip (below) following the film’s world premiere in Venice Days, an independent sidebar to the Venice Film Festival.
In his tender drama, set in Tehran, old relationships break – like Sima’s marriage to Behzad – and new ones begin. Sometimes, by complete chance.
As Sima starts looking for a new home for herself and her daughter Minoo, her soon-to-be ex meets up with his former flame. He’s also looking for a rare species of owl, living somewhere outside the city. But teenage Minoo is busy as well: she meets a boy.
“Minoo and Keyvan first make eye contact at a traffic light and quickly form a bond without exchanging a word. As they walk through the city and flirt, ‘Boomerang’ captures a sense of lightness and fluidity reminiscent of the French New Wave,” said the director.

Annette Bening is an actor’s actor. Like many of the greats before her, she began her career in the theatre. Through the 80s, she quietly compiled a library of rich, complex characters before making her Tony-nominated broadway debut in 1987’s “Coastal Disturbances.”
Bening then made her well deserved transition over to Hollywood with John Hughes’ “The Great Outdoors.” The film didn’t perform as well as hoped, nor did Milos Forman’s “Valmont” which was released the following year, but they both paved the way for Bening’s eventual Oscar-nominated breakout as Myra Langtry in Stephen Frears’ “The Grifters.”
She got particularly close to Oscar gold with “American Beauty” in 2000. Annette bagged the BAFTA and SAG award for her iconic portrayal of the colourfully volatile wife-in-crisis, Carolyn Burnham. She lost to Hilary Swank (“Boys Don’t Cry”) though, who had edged her out at the Globes.

Exclusive: Topic Studios, the award-winning production company behind titles like Theater Camp and 100 Foot Wave, has laid off over 20 employees, multiple sources tell Deadline. Employees were notified on Tuesday, and we hear that almost all divisions are affected, with all of those working on the TV side being cut.
A company spokesperson emphasizes that despite changes being made when it comes to the small-screen arena, “Topic Studios continues to produce television programs. This week’s staff changes have not impacted the multiple scripted and non-scripted television projects in production and development. While our scripted television strategy will be evolving, we plan to increase investment in this area.”
The layoffs come at a time of general turbulence in entertainment, which is still reeling from last summer’s double strikes and the pandemic that preceded it. Other media companies hit with mass layoffs just recently include Amazon, Hallmark Media, Great American Media,...

Exclusive: Amazon MGM’s Head of Specialty Theatrical Distribution, Mark Boxer, was among the notables cuts yesterday at the streaming theatrical studio.
Among some of Boxer’s highlights at Amazon, he oversaw the specialty theatrical releases of such Oscar nominated titles as Being the Ricardos, Poland’s 2018 International film entry Cold War, and 2x Oscar winner Sound of Metal.
With Amazon’s acquisition of MGM, Boxer was a key suit in getting Ben Affleck’s Air into theaters. He was also recently involved in the successful release strategies for awards season titles Saltburn, The Boys in the Boat and American Fiction.
During the pandemic, Boxer also handled the theatrical distribution of such big Prime Video acquisition titles, Coming 2 America, Cinderella, Hotel Transylvania 4, and The Tomorrow War to those cinemas and drive-ins that were lucky to be open.

Adam Driver's days in a galaxy far, far away are behind him. Kylo Ren died in "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" and, even though there is always a possibility that he could re-appear as a Force ghost, the actor has confirmed that he is not returning to the franchise. That may be for the best for his long-term sanity, as the process of making the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy was especially exhausting for Driver.
The actor was recently a guest on the "SmartLess" podcast, in part to promote his new movie "Ferrari." During the conversation, Driver confirmed he is "not doing any more" projects set in the "Star Wars" universe. So fans should make their peace with that. Continuing, the actor explained that the pace of working on a big blockbuster movie set didn't suit him all that well. Not because it's too fast, but, oddly, because it's...

Jeffrey Wright is a well-respected character actor with a slew of awards on his mantle. However, despite his more-than-stellar career, this lauded thespian has yet to reap an Oscar nomination. That could be about to change, however, with his new Amazon/MGM release “American Fiction,” which is out in theaters in the US on December 15.
Cord Jefferson adapted Percival Everett’s comic novel “Erasure” for his feature film directorial debut. Wright plays Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, an English literature professor whose lampooning of another Black writer’s success turns into an unexpected success. The film is a biting social satire with Wright’s witty, intelligent performance at the heart of it.
Lovia Gyarke (The Hollywood Reporter) explained: “Wright plays Monk, a figure so absorbed in how the world perceives him that he forgets to see what’s right in front of him, with an understated tenderness. The actor adds a subtle...

Michael Fassbender and David Fincher teaming up makes perfect sense. The duo work together so well in their new movie “The Killer” that it’s a wonder that they haven’t collaborated before. Netflix is releasing it theatrically on Oct. 27 and it will start streaming on Nov. 10.
In the new thriller, Fassbender plays a cold, meticulous, philosophizing hitman who must go on a mission to right his own wrong when he makes a mistake on a job. He’s also out for revenge, as is par for the course for a lot of assassin movies. But what isn’t par for the course is Fassbender’s lean and mean performance. We very rarely hear him speak in his actual scenes. Instead, we mostly hear him in a constantly-running voiceover, Fassbender utilizing his rasping voice to good effect. In his scenes, it’s Fassbender’s physicality — from impressive yoga to brutal...

Are you starting to feel the heat around the corner? Adam Driver certainly is. Consider it officially official that acclaimed director Michael Mann, who earlier this year was reported to be eyeing Driver as the lead of the feature film adaptation of his own novel "Heat 2," is gunning for the "House of Gucci" and "The Last Duel" star to step into the incredibly intimidating shoes of none other than Robert De Niro himself.
Famously cast as career criminal Neil McCauley in the original 1995 "Heat" opposite Al Pacino as cop Vincent Hanna, De Niro earned all sorts of recognition (although tragically not a Best Actor nom) for his performance in what's commonly considered one of the greatest action movies of all time. The fact that Mann even wants to return to the scene of the crime and attempt to bring his long-awaited sequel/prequel novel (co-written by both Mann and...

Sarah Goldberg has been cast in “Industry” Season 3 as a recurring guest.
The actress is set to portray Petra Joenig, a portfolio manager at the ethical investment fund, FutureDawn. If Goldberg thought the world of acting was high stakes, just wait until she’s part of HBO’s financial drama about investment banking.
The “Barry” star isn’t the only HBO alum who has been part of “Industry.” Jay Duplass, who co-created and starred in “Togetherness” and who penned a first-look deal with HBO in 2020, played a major role in Season 2. This upcoming season will star “Game of Thrones” breakout Kit Harrington as Henry Muck, the CEO and founder of a green tech energy company by the name of Lumi. Harrington will be a recurring guest in Season 3.
Goldberg is best known for starring opposite of Bill Hader in the Emmy-winning “Barry.” She also starred in 2020’s “The Night House” and 2019’s “The Report.

Plot: Eight interwoven stories about love, work, faith and family from across the globe will explore the intimate, life-altering choices that must be made when the planet is changing faster than the population. Every story is different, but the fight for our future is universal. And when the fate of humanity is up against a ticking clock, the battle between courage and complacency has never been more urgent. Are we brave enough to become the solution to our own undoing before it’s too late?
Review: Extrapolations is a sprawling, star-studded project that could only come from AppleTV+. Back in the day, a project with a cast this size would only be a big-screen spectacle like Earthquake or The Towering Inferno or possibly a marquee mini-series airing on a major television network. Now, streaming services have deep enough pockets to recruit global movie stars to regularly make projects like Extrapolations a reality.

Sunday Am: Amazon bought MGM –a motion picture studio–for $8.45 billion back in May 2021, and this weekend the streamer had their first taste of how wonderful a box office blockbuster is, as MGM/Uar’s Creed III opened to a franchise record of $58.6M. That’s also the highest debut ever for a sports movie. At this level, Creed III stands to also become the highest-grossing Creed title stateside at $150M, besting Creed‘s $109.8M and Creed II‘s $115.7M, while also providing a lot of lift to a domestic box office looking to return to pre-Covid levels.

Attention must be paid. Apple TV+ is the home of swell comic series, like Ted Lasso, sure, but it's also become home for smart stories told in the future, like Hello Tomorrow!, which is on my mind since I just reviewed it. Frankly, it sounds ridiculous to try and dramatize climate control, but his new show, Extrapolations, looks to be making a compelling case for paying attention and doing something about it. It's not something any of us want to confront, but thanks to Apple TV+, climate change is at the forefront of a new prestige drama called "Extrapolations" — and the streamer has released the series' first trailer.
In the sneak peek, we are introduced to a world where some of our woes are solved — the trailer asserts that cancer has been cured — but others are only just beginning. Earth is now ravaged by the effects of climate change, and it is up to those of us left to try to find a way forward for human survival.
The series was written and directed by Scott Z. Burns (the writer of "Contagion" and director of "The Report"), and will unfold over an eight-episode season of interconnected stories. Its official synopsis reads:
"Extrapolations" is a bracing limited series that introduces a near future where the chaotic effects of climate change have become embedded into our everyday lives.
