Italian director Paolo Virzì (“Human Capital,” “Like Crazy”) is in Venice where his dystopic drama “Siccità,” which means drought in Italian, is premiering out-of-competition. The innovative pic, which features an A-list ensemble cast comprising Monica Bellucci, Sara Serraiocco (“Counterpart”) and Silvio Orlando (“The Young Pope”), is set amid a protracted drought caused by climate change in the Italian capital where the Tiber has dried up.
Virzì spoke to Variety about how “Siccità” germinated during Covid-19 and was shot amid tight pandemic protocols. Excerpts.
You worked with novelist and screenwriter Paolo Giordano on the concept and the script for this film. How did the collaboration start?
I knew Paolo, but it’s not like we had ever worked together. I knew him a bit as a writer and during the pandemic I read his articles in Corriere della Sera about what was happening at a time when there were lots of different fears going around.

Exclusive: Alex Wolff has signed on to star opposite the previously announced Kiersey Clemons in Sophie Kargman’s thriller, Susie Searches.
Kargman’s feature directorial debut is based on her 2020 short of the same name, in which she starred alongside Delon de Metz, Sam Lerner, Gabriel Notarangelo and Alison Rich. The darkly comic thriller follows Susie (Clemons), an awkward college student who seizes the opportunity to bolster her popularity—and her overlooked true-crime podcast—by solving the disappearance of a classmate. But as her investigation proceeds, we realize that the truth and Susie aren’t at all what they seem.
Wolff will play Jesse, the charismatic college kid whose disappearance sparks Susie’s investigation. While Jesse has become a campus celebrity thanks to his positivity-themed social media platform, it turns out his private life is much more complicated than his online persona suggests.
Kargman wrote the script with William Day Frank.

Prior to the pandemic, British filmmaker Peter Chelsom shot an Italian-language movie titled “Security” based on the novel of the same name by U.S. author Stephen Amidon. The film, set in the posh Tuscan seaside town of Forte Dei Marmi, wrapped just before lockdown. It stars Italian A-lister Marco D’Amore as a cop looking into a web of sexual abuse cases. The entirely Italian cast also comprises Maya Sansa, Fabrizio Bentivoglio, Valeria Bilello, Silvio Muccino and Tommaso Ragno. The cinematographer, Mauro Fiore (“Avatar”), is Italian-born. Chelsom spoke exclusively to Variety about “Security,” which is co-produced by Indiana Production and Vision Distribution and being sold as a market premiere at the Cannes virtual Marché du Film by Vision Distribution’s new world sales arm.

In an unusual move, German and Swiss indie Dcm Film International has snapped up German-language remake rights to Italian dramedy “Andrà Tutto Bene” (“Everything’s Gonna Be Alright”) directed by Francesco Bruni, even before the film’s theatrical release in Italy.
While one could be forgiven for thinking the title pertains to the coronavirus pandemic, this pic is instead about a down-and-out film director who discovers he has a form of leukemia for which he needs a stem cell transplant from a matching donor. The deal for German remake rights was inked during lockdown by Italy’s Vision Distribution and Dcm. Bruni’s latest work had screened in still unfinished form at Berlin’s European Film Market in February. Dcm is currently looking at various German directors and talents to attach to the project.

There’s no box office to report. Instead, we’re watching theaters furlough workers as the $2 trillion federal relief package gives hope that someday they can be rehired. American studios exercised optimism as they moved theatrical release dates, while China stepped back from its own exuberance and closed theaters just five days after reopening.
President Trump has retreated from his claim that the country could return to something like normal by Easter, and extended social distancing recommendations through the end of April. With cases and deaths very much on the rise, it seems reasonable to believe that social distancing will continue until those numbers are in real decline. So while Warner Bros. switched the highly anticipated “Wonder Woman 1984” from June 5 to August 14, it remains to be seen if that will represent foresight or wishful thinking. (Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” still claims July 17).

It’s Easier for a Camel…: Meyers and Moverman Craft Serviceable, Familiar Remake
Although it pulls no punches in its re-working of Paolo Virzi’s 2013 title Human Capital, this English language rehash from director Marc Meyers finds itself in safe, capable hands with screenwriter Oren Moverman on board. For those unfamiliar with the original, an adaptation of the Stephen Amidon novel, it may seem there’s a certain level of proficiency and ingenuity here in this sometimes-vicious class conflict melodrama. However, Meyers version tends to pale in comparison to its original despite a high-profile cast, and the narrative’s non-linear puzzle pieces leading up to one detrimental moment doesn’t play as effortlessly this time around, if perhaps due to the tug and pull afforded some of the more noted cast members.…...

Welcome back one and all to the weekly box office report! As is always the case, each and every Sunday you can expect a look at what made the most money in theaters, as well as just how all of the new releases fared. Well, that’s how we normally start off this post, but as you all know, the Coronavirus pandemic has closed movie theaters across the country (many of the the theater chains started doing so this week). Without new film releases, obviously the box office has completely tanked. Still, if/when reports are still being made public, we’ll report them. Consider it an attempt at normalcy in these anything but normal times, silly as it may be… With no new releases, I’ll just remind you all that Blow the Man Down, Hooking Up, and Human Capital were among the titles hitting VOD. Obviously, they didn’t come to theaters,...

A lot is happening in Human Capital, a new film directed by Marc Meyers.
Initially an Italian film by Paolo Virzi loosely based on the 2004 novel from Stephen Amidon, Human Capital centers on two families brought together by the fleeting relationship between their teenagers.
Liev Schrieber plays Drew, a struggling real estate agent, husband, and father whose brief history suggests he has delusions of grandeur and get-rich-quick schemes.
Depending on the market, real estate can be that, but Drew chose real estate because his father instilled in him to do something society deems necessary for his life's work.
Drew chose real estate over coffins, he jokes.
But Drew has a secret that comes to light when he drives his daughter, Shannon (Maya Hawke) to visit her boyfriend, Jamie (Fred Hechinger), the son of a well-to-do hedge fund manager, Quint, and his wife, Carrie, played by Peter Sarsgaard and Marisa Tomei.

As theaters shutter and big studio films postpone wide theatrical releases, indie and arthouse films are trying their best to navigate the waters of the coronavirus outbreak. Like big banner titles, many indie films that were set to release this weekend are opting to delay their debuts, while a handful are opting for a digital release — which is often common for the specialty space.
The Mangurama/Abramorama title Dosed was set to be released in theaters in New York starting Friday and was set to expand on March 27 in Los Angeles. Instead, they have opted to do a global release on digital with 10% from every purchase of the film going to coronavirus disaster relief, which will be matched by Facebook. Once theaters reopen, they will pull the film from streaming and resume theatrical release.

Working on “Human Capital” was a reunion for Alex Wolff and Maya Hawke.
The two play love interests in the indie thriller about a horrific accident that causes two families to fracture as secrets are uncovered and threatened to be exposed.
It turns out that Wolff and Hawke went to pre-school together in New York City. They even dressed as Power Rangers together for Halloween, Wolff, 22, tells me on this week’s episode of “The Big Ticket,” Variety and iHeart’s weekly podcast. “I feel like Maya’s going to deny that she dressed as a Power Ranger for Halloween, and I just want to go on record, she’s lying,” Wolff cracked.
In the movie, Wolff plays a loner with anger issues. He’s very similar to the high schooler he plays in “The Cat and the Moon,” which also marked his feature film writing and directing debut.

"I can't get involved in some kind of conspiracy." Vertical Entertainment has debuted an official trailer for an indie drama titled Human Capital, which initially premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year and it also played at the Hamptons Film Festival. The lives of two different families collide when their children begin a relationship that leads to a tragic accident. The film seems to also be a bigger commentary on how money is often valued more than humanity, and how this can lead to tragedy and other existential problems. Starring an ensemble cast including Liev Schreiber, Marisa Tomei, Peter Sarsgaard, Maya Hawke, Fred Hechinger, Betty Gabriel, and Alex Wolff. Despite good intentions, this film doesn't seem that impressive in any particular way. And I'm sure we would've heard more buzz for it if it really was that great. Here's the first official trailer for Marc Meyers' Human Capital, direct...

The Hamptons Intl. Film Festival continues its 27-year run as a premier showcase for both contemporary global cinema and the most eagerly awaited awards season prestige movies.
Unspooling among the tony beach towns of New York’s Long Island, it’s earned a reputation as a kind of East Coast Telluride.
“It’s pretty busy,” says executive director Anne Chaisson. “Twenty-five thousand people descending on the area to come see movies is significant.”
Running Oct. 10-14, Hiff is less focused on splashy world premieres than in serving as a comfortable, slightly glamorous waystation for the most acclaimed titles on the international festival circuit. If there’s a movie you’ve heard about from Cannes, Venice or Berlin, you’re likely to find it in East Hampton.
Artistic director David Nugent, a Hamptons local, takes a curatorial approach to programming.

Valeria Bruni Tedeschi has been cast as a morally and economically bankrupt matron in Italian director Leonardo Guerra Seràgnoli’s movie adaptation of “The Time of Indifference,” author Alberto Moravia’s scathing critique of the Fascist-era bourgeoisie.
Seràgnoli, a young helmer known for “Last Summer” and “Likemeback” – which bowed at the Rome and Locarno fests, respectively – has started shooting his contemporary take on the widely translated novel in Rome. First published in 1929, when Moravia was 21, “Gli Indifferenti” captured the middle-class malaise of its time and established Moravia as a world-class writer.
The story sees members of an upper-crust Rome family reacting to a financial crisis that is undermining their social status. Mariagrazia, played by Bruni Tedeschi, is a widow with an unscrupulous lover, Leo, played by Edoardo Pesce (“Dogman”). She has two children by her dead husband: Carla, whom Leo has the hots for, and Michele, who is aware that...

Behind-the-scenes-industry-player-turned-movie-director Marc Meyers took multitasking to a new level this month, debuting two wildly different films at corresponding fall festivals.

In speaking with TheWrap’s Steve Pond following the premiere of “Human Capital” at Toronto, Wolff described filming an intense scene with co-star Maya Hawke in which he smashed his forehead and accidentally got a big gash in his eyebrow, which he had recently pierced for the role.
“There was a moment where I was staring at Maya looking, and it went from her doing the scene to her genuinely looking at my eyes like something was wrong,” Wolff said. “And then I realized, ‘Am I sweating a lot? Oh, that’s blood dripping down my eye in the middle of me screaming at her.'”

Buyers circling Bad Education, The Platform, The Friend.
Two on-site deals have breathed life into a typically slow start on the acquisitions front at Tiff as Magnolia Pictures picked up North American rights to Tiff Discovery selection Two Of Us, while Bleecker Street acquired the Us for Military Wives.
Two Of Us premiered on Saturday and Magnolia closed the deal on Monday (9). France-based Italian filmmaker Filippo Meneghetti’s feature directorial debut follows two older women played by Barbara Sukowa and Martine Chevallier who live across the hall from each other in the same apartment building but have kept their romance hidden for decades.

‘Bad Education’ starring Hugh Jackman, ’The Friend’ and ’Human Capital’ are generating buzz.
Heading into at the end of the first Tiff weekend with no major on-site deals in the bag, buyers were hopeful Hugh Jackman and Allison Janney in Cory Finley’s school embezzlement comedy drama Bad Education would inject life into a quiet market.
Endeavor Content represents the world and jointly handles the Us with CAA. At time of writing, acquisitions teams were circling Gabriela Coperthwaite’s cancer drama The Friend, which Stx International and Endeavor Content represent, UTA Independent Film Group was fielding interest in Marc Meyers’ hit-and-run drama Human Capital,...

“Human Capital” has returned home in a sense, in that American novelist Stephen Amidon’s 2004 book was made into a very well-received Italian film by Paolo Virzi in 2013, and now Marc Meyers’ U.S. feature is based on both prior incarnations. There’s no reason it shouldn’t work again in what is, after all, its original setting. Yet as with the recent stateside do-overs of “After the Wedding” and “Gloria,” this is another remake probably best enjoyed by those unfamiliar with its predecessor, which remains more incisive and memorable. This “Capital” succeeds as a well-acted crisscrosser of a melodrama between two awkwardly entangled families in upstate New York. Where it falls well short is in attaining the level of biting social commentary Virzi drew from the same material.
