Kaiserschmarrndrama
(2021)

No growth for the main character after years of screentime
It had its funny moments, but what really bothered me is the toxic main character that just refuses to grow. "I don't want a new apartment I don't want new furniture".

Everybody is always so nice to him but he doesn't treat them with respect, even jeopardizing the relationship to his best friend.

And after countless episodes he still didn't learn a thing. To me it looks like the embodiment of a wrong male role model. At heart he is a child, being cooked and cared for by his granny and his long term girl friend. He smokes he drinks, he doesn't spend quality time with his girlfriend, but in the end she is always there when he needs something. So why grow up. To make him likeable at least he doesn't cheat and what you see is what you get.

The message: don't try to change conservative males. Only take them as they are.

Jumanji: The Next Level
(2019)

Solid, funny, surprising
If you are looking for fun, entertainment and excitement this is the movie for you. Even without having seen the first movie you'll enjoy it. Performances are great and over the top (when they need to be). A few throwbacks to the first installment, a host of new characters and avatars. We saw it in 3D which is flawless (which I cannot say of all blockbusters lately).

Fat: A Documentary
(2019)

Give it a try - your health will thank you
Yes it might be controversial for some, but even the ADA changed their guidelines for low-carb recently and lowcarb and ketogenic are slowly gaining acceptance. Seeing the context under which the original food pyramid and saturated fat is evil craze began was nice. Also the amount of historical film they filmmakers uncovered is great, even if you already know the story from books or blogs.

watch it

Captain Marvel
(2019)

Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Don't understand the review bombing
It took some convincing (of me) to go see this one. I don't know the comics and I didn't find the trailer to interesting, as they are very careful not to spoil stuff.

So I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the story, the action and the general feel of the movie.

So see the masses of 1 and 2 start reviews for what they are. A way for some people to voice there opinion much as I do voice mine.

Go see this!

Darwin's Nightmare
(2004)

Leave it to humanity to destroy everything
I saw this movie on the first Austrian public premiere. The director Hubert Sauper was present for a Q&A afterward. The general quality of this film is quite good. The documentary was filmed digital. Special care was taken with sound-design which is quite good.

The film starts directly in Tanzania. The Nile Perch, a fish introduced into the lake Viktoria is slowly "destroying" everything. Not only on an ecological level but also economically.

Interesting is the way the director understands his own movie. It's not so much the fiddling with nature (introducing a foreign fish was a big risk) but the way that wealth changes everything. Since the fish is quite expensive, local people cannot afford it. Expensive goods need to be protected, so weapons need to be bought. Don't get me (or the director) wrong. As he explained in the Q&A he doesn't want everyone to stop eating fish, but we should look at it more globally. Every time something expensive is found (oil, gold, diamonds, fish, ...) the whole region around it is changed. Some people get rich, but most get poorer than they already are.

Before the Nile Perch people could live a life. Now everything revolves around fish. Prostitution often is the only way for a woman to make money. Aids is everywhere, and eats away the work-force. Education is nearly non-existing.

The most perverted thing, according to director Hubert Sauper, is, that the EU found out in study, that people in Tanzania are missing protein in their diets. So we sent shipments of protein pills down. But the protein-rich fish gets taken away, because we can pay high prices, and destroy the local market.

After the Nile Perch destroys the lake (canibalism), there will be a blue desert left. And humanity will move on to destroy something else.

Signs
(2002)

Beautiful and creepy (8/10)
This is a new kind of horror flick! Of course some people would disagree but I think it is.

The start of the movie is a homage to early Sci-Fi flicks. It shows of the great score of the film, why the credits go by. It's innovative in a certain retro kind of way. Some of the beautiful shots and scene setups that the team around writer/director M. Night Shyamalan have created just need to be seen to be believed.

I will mention on which comes later on in the movie. I try to stay spoiler free:

The scene starts of with Graham (Mel Gibson) and Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix) checking something (I just cannot reveal what). And suddenly they notice something, and then the camera shows you, why they are so baffled. You see, and you believe you found it. That's when you let your guard down. You have built up some tension, because you were expecting something, you see it, and are relieved, since it's not as bad as you thought. And then the scene really hits you. BAM. Unexpected. Fear builds up. The perfect horror movie.

Another scene seems to me to pay homage to "Blair Witch Project". It's utterly dark. You here. All around you. Screeching. Tapping. You just cannot make anything of it. And then the light goes back on. You see Bo (Grahams daughter) standing in the corner, facing away. This seems to be in homage to Blair Witch, who relied heavily on sounds. If you remember the film ended with the "controversial Mike stands in the corner" shot.

Like all Shyamalan films this has another last minute revelation. Not as heavy as Sixth Sense, but nonetheless. Although I am not a religious person at all, I found it quite nice and unobtrusive. Some people may think more of it (Mel Gibson after all plays a former Reverend) but I don't. It's just the story.

But all in all this is a definite must see. Most of the performances are just great, and the camera work is nice. Go see it. I gave it 8/10

Les rivières pourpres
(2000)

Where did they leave the logic? (6/10)
This movie just starts of great. It is wonderfully filmed, but unfortunately the story doesn't hold up to these high standards.

There are a few loopholes which the story jumps thru to save it self. But in the end (after having a long discussion about this movie) we came up with no real explanation. It could have been done better, if there would have been a better look at some details. But still, the movie is enjoyable and watchable.

If you rent it on video, you'll probably like it, but don't start watching it a second time. You will notice that a lot is missing. Overall I give it six out of 10

Ocean's Eleven
(2001)

This is a nice one (7/10)
You cannot help liking the "bad guys". The story: a few really good robbers (eleven to be exact) want to rob a casino. It is a fun popcorn movie for everyone. Nice dialogs, cool scenes, nice turnarounds. It's nearly everything you desire. There are nearly no drawbacks to this movie. It is well written, the cast is fantastic and everything else works. But: Since when are robbers thought of as "heroes" for movies. Well, as long as you don't get any bad ideas and are starting to plan on robbing a casino this is for you. I gave it a solid 7 out of 10

The Others
(2001)

Scary deep down (8/10)
Another one of those movies. The Trailer just doesn't show how good this movie is. With an amazing finish (much like The Sixth Sense) this movie will give you the creeps. The most amazing part is, that it doesn't use a lot of effects to do this. You will probably notice a lot of things, when you go watch this movie a second time.

If you like being scared and you like a cool story, where you don't know the ending from the start (like must big Hollywood pictures) than this is for you. I gave it a nice 8/10.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
(2001)

Not everything it could have been (7/10)
Yes, I saw it on opening day and yes I liked it. Nearly everyone who saw this movie on opening day is a fan and has probably read the book. And that is one of the major troubles. To friends of mine who were also in the cinema haven't read the books. And they had a hard time following the story. Some things are just left unexplained. Even some of the cast confused those who hadn't read the book. The moment Boromir gets introduced some thought there were two Aragorns. They just look a bit similar. Names in movies are always hard. Sometimes you don't understand them, sometimes they are simply left out. And this starts to confuse people who haven't seen those names (and the places) in writing. You have: Bree, Rivendell, Nazgul, Gandalf, Saruman, Boromir, Strider, Aragorn (just another name for Strider), Gimli, Gloin, Balin, Gladriel, Arwen, Legolas, Pippin, Samwise Gamgee, Mary, Frodo, Bilbo, Elron, Isildur, etc.

Starting to get confused? Well that's what happens. Tolkien did a great job in the book with the map. Why not show it on screen (like they did in the Indiana Jones movies). That way you get totally lost. You have a lot of people, a lot of places, and you cannot grasp all of that. So in essence: you have to read the book to understand the movie.

The other thing that wasn't right was all the kitsch of the movie. e.g. Someone takes a lot of hits till he finally goes down (mortally wounded) and then takes more than 10 minutes on screen to die. Things like that are better left for romantic comedies.

But the movie also has a lot of good things. It's wonderfully made, the cast is nearly perfect, the action and the effects are good, and if you know the story you will enjoy it.

Read the book, than go see this movie. I gave it 7 out of 10

The Game
(1997)

So, what is going on? (8/10)
This is just one of this movies. You will probably either love it, or hate it. But you have to admit, David Fincher (the Director) knows what he is doing. Seven and Fight Club are two other movies from him. He is one of the most visual directories of Hollywood. The acting is also quite good.

The thing about this movie though, is that you should just go and see it. I knew a tad bit to much, so I couldn't quite let it go. I anticipated the ending (but didn't completely figure it out). To really enjoy this movie, you have to try to get Nicholas' (Michael Douglas) point of view. That's all you'll get out of me.

By the way, watch out for blue colors. It's typical for David Fincher movies. All in all I give this one 8/10. It's not as good as Fight Club (but some people may disagree).

American Pie 2
(2001)

Not living up to the first one (5/10)
I had great hopes for this movie. Unfortunately some of the character developed into some stupid one-dimensional jokes. On the other hand there are some nice twists and turns and definitely some nice jokes which made the whole theatre laugh. To be honest I have always had some caveats about Stiffler (played by Seann William Scott). In this movie he uses the f-word as a way to convey all kinds of meanings - much like the smurfs do with their smurfastic expressions. But this starts to be obnoxious to say the least. Some of the geekiness is just way of the chart (Sherminator), some of the acting is very original (once again Alyson Hannigan is brilliant as Michele). Overall it's a nice get-together with some nice actors in a nice set-up. If you enjoyed the first movie immensely (e.g: I did) then you'll like this one.

The story is not that original either. It's summer, holidays are comming, what to do? Once again Kevin's brother comes to the rescue with one of his "secrets" (like the secret "How to give your girlfriend a good time" book in the first movie). This time they go to this wonderful beach house.

If you don't know what the first movie was about, save yourself from seeing this one. This is just for the fans. I tried to be objective and gave this one five out of ten.

The Pledge
(2001)

Good actors, good story but lacking some drive (6/10)
The acting is fabulous. You got to see Jack Nicholson. From "A Few Good Men" to "As Good As It Gets" he evolves to this. The story can be told in one line: Retired Cop tries to solve one last (brutal) case.

So what else is their to say. Some of the violence is to graphic. I am used to a lot, and I didn't think it was necessary the way they showed it. Look at the classic "Psycho". It didn't show much and was horrific nevertheless. Just because you CAN, doesn't mean you have to. The story is really good, and is modeled after a novel from "Friedrich Duerrenmatt". I've read some of his books (but not this one) and always liked them.

The problem with this one is that you start to miss some "action". There is simply nothing happening at all. Since I found the end a bit disappointing (but not unbelievable) I only gave it 6/10. This just means that I have seen some better movies. I wouldn't watch it a second time, but it's definitely worth seeing.

The Tigger Movie
(2000)

Kids Entertainment Disney Style (5/10)
So, yes this is a kids movie. But I like Tigger, so I saw this one. There is a bit of a story-line (although it lacks in comparison to some of the BIG Disney's) and there is singing.

The German translation doesn't seem to be good (especially the singing) but I cannot compare this to the english original.

If you have small kids (say up to 8 years) this might be good entertainment with a good moral at the end of the story. If you don't then you should go for some of the bigger Disney Movies which are better in both song and story.

I gave it a entertaining 5/10

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
(2001)

Simply Overrated (3/10)
This movie is a waste of time. But you really need to see this movie twice to get the bad story-line.

The enemy is actually no enemy (at least that's what you get when you listen closely). The effects are nice in places, but it's still nothing as big as for example toy story. The efforts that had to be taken (voice over, lip synching, motion capturing, etc) was way to much. Hollywood can rest assured that they want be replaced to soon. The problem with most movies that try to showcase new technology is, that the story - more often than not - gets lost on the way.

I don't want to spoil anyone's fun, but this is definitely not a movie for the big screen. If you rent it, it might be worth your money. But be warned, the story - as simple as it actually is - is hard to follow. The concept (unrolling the background, as the movie continues) makes sense in e.g. Usual Suspects, but not with this one.

If this is Popcorn-Cinema than give us real villains with real motivation. I give this one 3/10 for some nice Effect-Shots.

Poltergeist III
(1988)

This really is "The last straw" (1/10)
This movie's tagline really says it all.

You can only stretch a concept so far. Even in 1988 the clothes was outdated. The story doesn't exist. And what's more, the gory effects are only present, when they shouldn't be. I mean talk about bad timing. You have to laugh at such unbelievable acting and filmmaking. The goofs are obvious to everyone.

The motivation of the characters is in inversely proportional to their stupidity - but the bad way around. When you think to your self: I see something bad happening near mirrors, than I don't go near them. It's what keeps our children alive in everyday traffic. Commonsense is totally missing from this peace.

All in all this sequel sucks. I give it 1/10.

Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain
(2001)

Off-Hollywood at its best (9/10)
This movie is a true masterpiece. It is beautifully filmed and the cast is fabulous. True, most of them don't look like they are hot off the Vogue-Cover, but that makes them look so much truer.

The story is basically a romantic comedy. Amelie is a woman, who seems to be a typical single of modern life. Her imagination sometimes takes her on "little trips". You get to know her and her surroundings. It's just an everyday story with a little twist towards a fairy-tale.

The "magical" elements never take overhand, or get unbelievable. We all have day-dreams like that sometimes, but in this movie they are an integral part of the whole story. But watch out: because of some adult content (you get to see a bit of naked flash, and bit a few sexual items are discussed) this is NOT a movie for young people.

I give this movie 9 out of 10

Der Schuh des Manitu
(2001)

A big laugh from start to finish (9/10)
Well, you shouldn't expect a good story-line or high-drama. But if you expect laughs and some movie-parodies your at home. You will notice a lot of scenes are spoofed from classics. The cast definitely had a lot of fun making the movie. The shots are great.

So to sum up the story: Abahachi borrows money from the apache. Unfortunately the son of the apache chief gets killed by Santa Maria (the villain), who also steels the money. So Ranger and Abahachi go look for a treasure map, to find a diamond, Abahachi once hid a long time ago.

The story is secondary, the emphasis on this movie is on FUN. I gave it a 9. Go see it, and wait till the end. After the credits Winnetouch has a little scene.

Sweet November
(2001)

Hollywood movie without a real happy end? (7/10)
I must admit, I like, both Charlize and Keanu a lot. They were very good in "The Devils Advocat". You can see that they both like to play with each other. The acting is very good. The end was somehow disappointing. It seems like Keanu's character really evolved thru-out the movie, but she stood still.

About the plot. A workaholic, who hasn't even got time to do his DMV test (to prolong his drivers licence) gets entangled with Sara, a girl with a rather suspect life-style. After he gets fired and looses his girl-friend he moves in with here.

She normally stays with guys for no more than a month, and she tells him that upfront. But she didn't calculate on falling in love...

I give it a 7/10

Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles
(2001)

Fun for everyone (5/10)
So, this is it. Hopefully the last Dundee ever. I was actually quite suprised, to see this one beeing this good. Yeah, the story was kind-of far-fetched, but don't let that get in the way of the fun. Except for some of the typical Australian jokes (note that I am from Austria, Europe NOT from Down Under) there were a lot of laughs in the audience. If the weather is bad, and you don't know what else to do, go see this.

The Deep End of the Ocean
(1999)

Candidate for "Worst Movie Ever" (1/10)
This one was so bad, I have to warn others. Not that you get me wrong. I enjoyed the acting. I only sat thru this movie because it was a sneak preview (you don't know the movie you are going to see). I think the back-and-forth of the whole story is just to much. After a lot of discussion we came to the conclusion that the typical Hollywod happy-end was totally wrong. If the filmmakers would have spared us that, the film might have just been worthwile. So, I give it a 1/10 for a complete waste of time.

UHF
(1989)

Wacky. Better than Hot Shots (8/10)
I enjoyed this movie a lot. From Conan the librarian to the Dire Straits parody song, it's one big look inside "Weird Al" Yankovics head.

Ever since I found the "Even Worse" Album (that is even worse than "Michael Jacksons: Bad" :-) I have been a fan of Al Yankovic. The best part is, that you can actually see, that it wasn't meant to be a Hollywood blockbuster. The jokes are genuine, not like all those Naked Gun/Hot Shots stuff. This is real. In short: If you like to laugh: see it. I gave it 8/10

The Insider
(1999)

Fascinating and Frustrating 9/10
A really great movie. This is a true story!

You really see how messed up the law-system is. If you have the money you can do everything. It's not so shocking that "nicotin is addictive". That's something I knew for a long time, but it's shocking what the tobacco companies go thru to protect that knowledge from being made official. It's frustrating to see that the truth (at first) doesn't seem to be valuable enough.

Here in Austria we also had a big dispute a few years back. Every cigarette pack contained the wording "cigaretttes MAY cause health problems". It took a long time and a lot of litigation to get that "may" out of the sentence, because cigarettes are dangerous. After this movie, reconsider smoking or even investing in cigarette-related companies.

Go see this movie, for not only is the story good, but also the acting is truly phenomenal. The only drawback is the legal mumble-jumble which you will only be able to understand if you have read at least two Grisham books.

Magnolia
(1999)

Starting off good, but losing it really fast
First Of: I saw the movie a few weeks before official box-office opening here in Austria. I have some strong emotions about this film: I hate it. It starts off really great. It promises to be something like Fight Club with some ill sense of humour. But it isn't. It is simple the life of a bunch of people (some brilliantly played though - congrats to Julianne Moore and Tom Cruise). No More - And no less. Some scenes seem to be dragged too long. I nearly fell asleep. All the time I hoped for something BIG happening. The movie could have been better if it was cut a little faster and I would have been perfectly happy. To put this right: I don't want this to be an action movie, I just wanted something to happen. I mean watching an old man die and watching his wife break apart can be told in 30 Minutes not 3 hours. Cinema is about having a good time. If I want to see (nearly) ordinary lives happening I would have visited some friends instead of going to the movies. SO: Don't watch this movie if you wanna be entertained.
