Crawl
(2019)

Crawl away
I'm really surprised by the amount of positive reviews. Maybe I was in the wrong mood, but I was cringing almost all of the movie. It took itself just a bit too seriously. If you want to enjoy, please make sure to work on your suspension of disbelief, as the main characters seem to have no impact from any of what happens to them.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix
(2019)

A very decent action movie
I guess after Endgame, all superheroes will look a bit pale in comparison, but X-Men: Dark Phoenix is certainly not the train wreck I expected it to be.

I enjoyed the visuals, the character moments, and even though the trailer had me worried, Sophie Turner did a good job with the different conflicts and emotions.

Some characters get more moments than others, but I liked how the movie incorporated many of the themes from the comics. (hope, despair, hatred, etc)

I really enjoyed myself, the two hours were over before I knew it.

What Men Want
(2019)

A fun light-hearted movie
Not sure where all the 1* reviews come from. Sure, it won't win any Oscars, but you could see the actors had fun playing in the movie, it doesn't take itself so seriously, and it has heartfelt and funny moments throughout the movie, without overdoing it.

Titans
(2018)

Better than the trailer suggests
I generally like comics and superheroes, but that doesn't always mean I like each and every iteration. I was a bit worried after seeing the trailer, mostly because of two things: special effects, and the tone (between the dark and gritty, and what they showed to be the colorful Starfire).

I have to say, I was kind of impressed. Sure, they're maybe trying a bit too hard to be dark and gritty, but (especially later) they set it off with some humor (not over the top) and cool combination of characters. I really like Dick Grayson, and Brenton's portrayal, as kick-ass yet conflicted former sidekick of Batman. I liked the choreography of his fight scenes. Gar is a nice addition to add lightheartedness, without being full-out comic relief. Raven is maybe a tadbit wooden, but adds some charm to the group, and I am most impressed by Starfire, as colorful, mysterious, bad-ass superhero.

I'm halfway through season one, but have high hopes for the remainder of the season and any further seasons that might hopefully come.

Aquaman
(2018)

Who thought Aquaman could be cool?
Wow, just wow. Just came back from this movie, and still have to digest how awesome it was. Visually this might be the most impressive movie I have seen. Storywise it is maybe a tad bit cliché, but luckily it doesn't take itself overly serious and Jason Momoa has a lot of fun playing Aquaman, and gives him a lot of heart as hero and human.

Patrick Wilson did a decent job, but wasn't necessarily the best villain ever. His costume down the line did not help, even though it was kinda true to the comics.

But really, this is the kind of movie why cinema's still exist. Seeing it on your home screen would not do it justice.

Star Trek: Discovery
(2017)

A Promising Start
It was a long wait, but Star Trek is finally back to our TV screens! Maybe not entirely the Star Trek you used to know, but it takes bits and pieces of what makes Star Trek great, and creates a modern story.

The Klingons, although it wasn't really necessary to alter their appearance compared to previous series, make a great entrance. I found their new style impressive and intimidating; adding the actual Klingon spoken, and they make great adversaries this time round.

The visuals are great! Of course it is to be expected that it looks way more modern than the original Trek (although it takes place earlier), but it is stylish and relatively simple.

Can't wait to see how this develops!

One Day at a Time
(2017)

Won't win any awards for innovation, but will surely entertain you and warm your heart!
Sure, this isn't the most ground-breaking series ever. But it has a lot of heart, and I loved the cast and their interaction.

I don't like laugh tracks , and sure this series has one as well, but it doesn't really take the upper hand. I liked Fuller House from a nostalgic point of view, but this series is more genuinely funny and doesn't overuse the laugh track that much.

Without getting gushy or over the top, it also had some very touching moments, which was good to see. So all in all a very entertaining series to watch, which exceeded my expectations before I started watching this.

I really hope this will get a second season, great series to fill 30 minutes of your time and be entertained and have your heart warmed!

Dogville
(2003)

Great style, but the movie discredits itself.
This movie has quite some things going for itself. It's unique style, the voice-over, the structure, the acting.

Where the movie fails though, it's the point it tries to get across. It wants to make you believe that the voice-over's point of view (which I would assume is the director's) is an objective analysis what happens.

The way it switches the characters from reasonable people to monsters is nothing short of ridiculous, especially the graceful Grace.

All in all I really enjoyed the first half, the way the decor (or lack thereof) enhanced the storytelling, the way the movie was set up as a play. I wish I would have saved myself one and a half hour by not watching the second half. It turns into a bitter movie that does nothing but portray a far too one sided image of humanity, which leads to believe the director could do with more fun in his life.
