The Intern
(2015)

Like watching a train wreck occur over an hour and a half
What do you get when you combine all of the memes and clichés of our shallow, tech-obsessed post-globalisation, hipster world and then have a wise, humble, dapper and old fashioned gent (Robert De Niro) as the ever congenial retiree intern.

What's baffling is De Niro's character. He has a complete lack of anysort of antipathy or disillusionment for finding himself in that situation - being bossed around the office and managed by people who have been on this planet for a quarter of the time he has, and who are genuinely childish, stupid and unprofesional.

In the real world - this sort of business which is completely devoid of any depth or intelligence would be hard to find. Although the bad acting make this bag full of design agency clichés all the more hard to swallow. This film is like a strange alternate universe and it is indeed like watching an atomic blast slowly unfold.

Switched off twenty minutes in when I realised that these people were not behaving this way ironically, they were actually seriously attempting to portray a workplace of today.

Quite possibly the worst movie I've seen in my life.

A long-dead Victorian vicar in a coffin would have more life in it than the people in this show
Gut wrenching and excruciatingly terrible. Like watching a train wreck in slow motion before your eyes, spliced with reactions from people without any acting ability.

The woman who plays with wife Sarah Jane Callies is just excruciating to watch as she oscillates through various situations with the same benign and indifferent expression on her face, regardless if she's being chased by a drone, making her children breakfast or holding a gun to someone's head. She gives a completely new definition to wooden acting.

The pilot has an interesting ongoing narrative however the lack of acting ability of the cast makes one wonder why they should care what happens to the people in the show. Indeed every second of watching is yet another second of your life that you won't get back.

Moral of the story is: Don't mess with Obama, I mean Denzel
Obama...I mean Denzel swings some seriously massive and intimidating American penis against Russian mafia in this film.

In all seriousness though this film is totally awesome. It features great actor Denzel Washington, who does have an uncanny resemblance to the president. He is the man not to be messed with in this film. The narrative pits an unethical, evil and corrupt Russian underground with a righteous, courageous and overall good American hero (Denzel).

This was a narrative of good versus evil that was very popular in other films during the Cold War Era. Therefore it's hardly surprising, given the recent political events in Russia and the Ukraine that this film is also very much following along that well trodden path.

Although I am making it sound as though it's clichéd it is actually a good film and Denzel is always great to watch on screen. Of all of the shoddy action films out there, I would rate this one highly. Which is surprising as I'm a woman and I normally absolutely hate action movies.

A mind bending sci-fi thriller of the highest calibre
A total mind-bending experience that takes you on a journey that's completely fresh and unexpected. Part psychological thriller, part science fiction, it's a creepy journey into the possibilities of technology. Great special effects and Lawrence Fishburne is brilliant in it, as he was in The Matrix all those years ago. I can't reveal much about the plot without giving it away, but this one is worthy of your time, based on the metaphors and narrative alone.

In a genre that has some big competition from mainstream Hollywood, this film is a lower budget version and yet still punches well above its weight for special effects, acting ability and storyline. The acting is great by the relatively unknown actors (other than Fishburne who is very well known). This adds to the palpable tension and suspense in the film.

A quirky and subtle British version of Amelie
I am rating this film 10 out of 10 because Sally Hawkins manages to charm the pants off anybody who watches this film.

It's buoyant, funny and a little bit sad in places (although not courtesy of the bubbly character of Poppy played by Hawkins)

This is a refreshing change from other Mike Leigh films which are very hard hitting and at times really sad. This film is buoyant and funny and yet at times it also has a measure of sadness.

There is a wily cleverness to Poppy, who is not only optimistic, she is able to assess and intuit the emotions of those around her. So rather than empty, bimbo-like optimism there is a lot of depth, compassion and likability to her character.

Any relatively optimistic and chirpy person, who has experienced being brought down a few pegs by life, can relate to this movie. In a subtle way it reminds me of Amelie, but a very British version of it.

An utterly electrifying car ride
A film taking place entirely within a car travelling at night on the M1 to London. For the whole film there is one visible character and everybody else interacting with him only via a hands-free kit.

To think that a film made on this premise would be utterly riveting and absorbing, nail-biting, raw and emotional is ludicrous. Yet this film delivers completely on what it promises. This has to do with great cinematography and phenomenal actors - Tom Hardy and Olivia Coleman.

This film had a very small budget and was shot in long sequences over eight days. This is a testament to the professionalism of the cast and crew and the raw talent of Tom Hardy, that this film could be so amazing.

Not only is Tom lovely to look at, and he does a mean Welsh accent, he is really one of the most amazing actors to come from Britain - EVER! I would be really disappointed if he doesn't win a BAFTA for this.

A feel good movie for bros
This is about as close as it gets to a feel good movie about bros hanging out without it being gay.

It's like a man's version of the chick flick Beaches. Two unlikely guys become friends when a strong and virulent African guy named Driss is called upon to become the manservant of tetraplegic and rich Phillipe. The two of them become close friends and a lot of hilarity ensues.

It's a completely unique film about friendship as it lacks all of the schmaltzy, sickening sentimentality of Hollywood movies of the same genre. Instead there's a deeply funny and human type of friendship that's based on two guys doing what guys do - smoke weed, get b**tches, get money etc.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, even as a woman.

A beautifully made movie
Juliette Binoche is one of the finest actresses of the past few decades. None of her beauty and vividness have faded with the advancing years. She brings to this role, as with all of her other roles a lot of heartfelt emotion. She plays a war photographer who is at war with herself about her family responsibilities versus her commitment to her dangerous occupation.

Nicolas Costas Waldau is brilliant as her husband. A much more appealing character than his Game of Thrones one. The young actresses who play her daughters are also wonderful.

One thing I will say is that it's frustrating to watch her put herself in immediate danger. Especially seeing as she has such an idyllic home life with such a beautiful husband, children and a nice cottage in rural Ireland. I won't spoil it for you. It is a wonderful movie, if a little frustrating.
