A Discovery of Witches
(2018)

Disconnection of witches
I noticed the book - the Wheel of time that led me to find the similar book category on Goodread website. I was going to buy a book but watched it instead.

I am appalled at the tedious story of Diana Bishop and oldest vampire throughout the episodes from season 1 and 2, l will not watch season 3. The storyline is scattering and has no relevant to a centralised character as Diana Bishop and it is confusing about acquiring the fully power in parallel world - past and present/future.

Quick summary:

  • The story is more drama rather than supernatural/fantasy action.

  • Some lines are well-written.

  • The villains are uninteresting and the other characters are partly unnecessary.

  • A very few scenes in some episodes are gripping that makes you to wonder what it is but didn't continue it on the next episode.

  • The film direction is moderate especially great visual scene and costumes, it's like big budget.

  • I saw Teresa for the first time, her acting is good. She could have played a detective role like Scully from X-file.

Crazy Rich Asians
(2018)

Non-comedy/romantic and nonsense film
I wonder how people understand an awful story and why they love it. It seems like a family relationship drama film rather than a comedy/romantic film. I have no clue what a writer is trying to tell us about the story of two Asian persons, it is nonsense and uninteresting.

SPOILER & MY PERSONAL QUESTIONS: Rachel who is an American-Asian economic professor and has a boyfriend (Nick) and been together over the years (Q: not mention how long). He revealed his wealth and explained the reasons (Q: Why did he keep the secret and not clearly what he was saying? Can't she see his expensive clothes/car? And what about his career?). He took her to Singapore to meet the family including a mother about future marriage while having a stupid party with other people around the places. Many women are staring at Rachel and jealous of her because she is an ordinary person with a millionaire guy. She told them that he didn't know about his wealth (Q: Again, why can't she see his expensive clothes, car and house)?. Nick's mother is happy about Rachel's personality tentatively and allows her son to do what he wants. Later, mother told Nick that she hired a private investigator secretly to find out Rachel's background and parents. They found out that Rachel's parents are alive and she lied to them that they weren't alive (Q: Why does Nick still trust and want to marry her after an untrue story of parent?) I don't understand why she didn't tell the truth about her parents. In real life, two partners should trust each other and it won't affect the relationship if anyone is alive but in a film, it doesn't make sense. In the next few days, Nick went to see her and understood about her life/parents. He still wants to marry her (Q: Is Nick a smart person? He shouldn't return to her for a second chance). Furthermore, Nick's mother meets Rachel and doesn't want her to be a daughter-in-law because she is a foreigner as an American Asian and partly untrustworthy person (Q: That is stupid reason, she is still Chinese and was born in China then moved to America?) Rachel said that she rejected his proposal (Q: She did the right thing but later she accepted it after listening to Nick's further reasons in the plane.)

I watched several Chinese action/comedy 80's/90's movies and they're amazing. This American film is not enjoyable and the story is really messy. I didn't laugh. Contance Wu won't suit a character as Rachel, it should be Charlene Choi, she is a lovable lady. Henry seems fine.

Spider-Man: Far from Home
(2019)

Again, Spider-boy appears in another unenjoyable action film.
Firstly, Spiderman is my favourite superhero and Tobey's movies are only the best as it has an excellent combination of action scenes and storylines.

This film that I waited for years to avoid the high cost of cinema ticket and rent video streaming since it was released. Because I knew that it wouldn't be good after I watched the first boring movie - Homecoming.

SPOILER: Whose idea was this? It's an unintelligent story and it seems that there is no serious villain. Mysterio is really bonker and using millions of drones to produce an illusion of own fake villain against himself is like a game challenge. It can be used for Sony Playstation game (refer to its Sony film production)

It is stupid action film, unmature Peter travels to European countries for a part of school trip alongside his friend and silly love interest while helping Nick Fury and Mysterio to defend an unexpected villain around the places. But Peter found out that it is all fake and it was Mysterio's idea with drones as hologram devices to project 3D villain characters and use Peter's glasses device as well to control them. That's it, no real action or event.

If you want to watch it, buy a cheap used DVD or watch it on a free TV channel.

I may write a review of No way home film in the next three or four years when it is cost-free.

Supergirl
(2015)

Temporary Supergirl and it's almost 85% forgettable.
I am a big fan of Supergirl but I cannot believe the disappointment of the poor TV series.

STORY: I prefer Supergirl's secondary name Linda, not Kara. Several episodes are great in the first season through to mid-third season. There is a minimum story of Supergirl's Krypton and her family. The rest of the seasons are uninteresting and the storylines are largely scattered as it doesn't focus on a single character. And also it is really unnecessary to have too many superheroes unless there is a specific reason.

ACTION SCENES: The fighting between supergirl and villains are quite underbalance. The visual effect is fine but it doesn't blend well with the fight movements. There is one thing that it looks quite unreality everytime she lands on the ground and flies unsmoothly, not like an original Supergirl movie.

ACTOR/ACTRESS: Melissa is OK but it is hard to think that she is Supergirl. She could be well fit into any type of romantic movies or possibly drama movies.

Chyler Leigh is no good to be Kara's sister, her acting skill is too stiff. I wonder who came up with an unprofessional concept of cutting a strange half haircut. It is quite distracting.

I think Katie McGrath might be perfect to be Supergirl because of her appearance and can be easily unrecognised in between Linda with brown hair and Supergirl with blonde hair. Lena's character is incomplete alongside Kara/Supergirl as it doesn't connect.

A few villains are boring, even famous Lex Luthor. Jon Cryer won't work as Lex with his shaved head and a beard, he looks terrible. It would be better without a beard and pick someone else.

A VARIED SUPERHEROES: They're associated with Supergirl's assistance and there are no further tales of in-depth characters.

MY OVERALL REVIEW: I am not sad that it is finished but the inexperienced writers ruined the classic supergirl over the years. As we know that Smallville and Supergirl are distinct from the character and story but Smallville is more enjoyable.

Pretty Woman
(1990)

Non-Romantic Film
Firstly I heard many people keeps saying that it's the best romantic comedy film and Julia got an award for the best actress. Well, people are probably right about Julia's acting but her role seems doesn't fit her and the film is not romantic, it's a kind of relationship drama. (I didn't realise the type of Vivian's character even I never read a description of this film)

I've watched it for the first time after 30 years since it was released. It's a simple story about when a rich guy(Edward) meets a poor lady(Vivian) then they're started to talking and kissing each other.

I don't understand one big thing, how can they didn't realise that they are in love at the near end of film after alot of kissed and slept on the same bed? There is no display of strong love affection between Vivian and Edward. In real life, love is powerful and there are so many meaning if people understand what it does mean when they're interact each other before turn into a relationship. I hardly accept if he wants her for a part of his life because he should better know about her partly life. (you may know that this film was supposed to be darker but the script has been changed).

The story isn't interesting and it's not quite enjoyable film. There are few funny spoken lines, Julia looks so lovely but her type of character is wrong and Richard seems sensible but the connection between them doesn't work, a director/producer should pick someone else.

Sonic the Hedgehog
(2020)

Fantasonic (Fantastic) action and family film.
I remember I've played Sonic The Hedgehog in 90's, it was really good experience and I like how the classic 2D design look. Sadly I lost the original cartidge and mege drive 2 console.

I am happy with the new design of Sonic, an original design was pretty bad. Thanks to those 3D designers who worked hard to redesigned it. It's an entertaining and watchable film, it has some good comedy and action scenes and the story is pretty simple.

James Marsden and Jim Carey are fine in the film as they did acting well. I was thinking if Tom Welling was in the film, instead of James Marsden then it could be more better because James's face and body movements are much like Tom.

Avengers: Endgame
(2019)

This boring marvel film is not right for you, the director/writer wants to steal your money for no story.
Don't trust the highest scores, trust the bad review. It's waste three hours film and bad storyline (not make any sense and confused). I don't understand why people likes it, I didn't cry or laugh but felt sleepy.

Here are the few things that I don't like the movie 1. Too many superheroes against baby Thanos. 2. Timeline - That is cheating and all the superheroes stills lose. 3. It's not an action film, it more likes drama/sci-fi film. 4. Natasha (black widow) didn't have to die, she should uses Red skull. 5. Thor and Hulk are lazy and they are no need to be in the film and possibly the other superheroes. 6. What is Rocket doing? Why did he need to travel in time? 7. Ironman didn't have to put the glove on but use the remote control to snap the finger.

I can't think of what else to write here but if you want to watch this, it's better to wait for rental dvd/digital to save your money.

Captain Marvel
(2019)

70% OK. Watchable and Enjoyable.
First I thought it would like the other marvel movies but this Captain Marvel is slightly different. It is a simple story about Carol/Captain Marvel and how she got the power (energy core), she also learnt about the aliens from another planet. I am not sure if the director did cut some scenes about Carol's life and possibly her power.

I feel like I am in the 1990's and those days are the best. No smartphone, no computer and no internet at home. Anyway, I watched it in the cinema last night and I didn't get bored but I saw few people walked out after an hour, maybe they dislike the 1990 style.

There are few things why I quite like this film: Good action scenes. Some friendly jokes. No selfies photo or smartphone (Good, because superhero don't normally carry it if the film was set in 2019). Some good quotes.

I hardly to watch this film because I dislike Brie Larson and it seems doesn't fit, she always look unhappy but sometime she did laugh and smile. If the directors had no option to find another actress to replace her then she should do more smiling and improve her acting skills. Samuel Jackson seems funny.

The Exorcist
(1973)

Nightmare! It's an excellent horror film!
You wouldn't go to sleep alone after you watch this film because it gives you nightmare.

The script is OK and it's not that really good but it's a good horror film. It's a true story which it happened to a young boy many years ago. The sound and picture are good, seems so real.

When I watched it on TV in early 2001, just before the film started, I watched the director's documentary about how he made it and what it was about. I tried to research online and I cannot find any information if the director did say that but I remember it quite well. Did you know that the whole original film was reshot? Because people made complaint that it was extremely scary and violence, so the director changed the scripts and tried to reduce the scary scenes. I saw a very short clip which you never seen it, when mother went to her daughter's bedroom and the ceiling's scene, they're rare version and never show on DVD or online but maybe on VHS if you still got them. I don't know the title of TV documentary.

The Mummy
(1999)

Super Action/Adventure and Horror Film. (Not too scary like the classic horror films)
I want the film-makers to produce more movies like this kind of film. It's similar to Indian Jones theme, I can't say it's better than Indian Jones but they're different pictures and the scripts too.

The Mummy Part 1 is much better than part 2 and 3.

When I watched it on TV for the first time in early 2000, first I thought it was mainly horror film but I was wrong, it's action adventure and of course, it's horror too. Some scenes are quite scary but not too scary or violence. The visual effect are brilliant and I never seen anything like that before at that time.

If you like Indian Jones and if you never seen this film then you should watch it. Enjoy!

Rush Hour
(1998)

Excellent comedy and action film!
When I watched this film for the first time on VHS, I didn't like it at first because of the script and characters does not match. Then I realised and started to like it after watched it again and again, it's action/comedy film and it's not like Lethal Weapon. Chris is so funny and Jackie is a brilliant action star.

Before this film released, when I was in school and told my friends about Jackie's martial art films and no-one were interested to hear and never heard of him because he's Chinese. Now, million of people likes him and enjoy to watch his old movies like Police Story Part 1- 5, Young Master, Drunken Master and many more, and oh yeah, classic Project A!!

It's my first favourite American comedy film ever.

Coolie No. 1
(1995)

Super Comedy Film!
Govinda is an excellent comedian and no-one can be better than him. He did really well in this film and Raja Babu as well, I'm surprised that he can do comedy. I was thinking that why he didn't do comedy film in 1980's until 1990's but thanks to David Dhawan who directed both of films. David makes us laugh and enjoy to watch them.

It was a huge hit at that time, they're classic and much more funny than nowaday.

Before the film released, I remember I viewed a very short song trailer on VHS, 'Main To Raste Se Jaa Raha Tha'. It was very rare trailer and difficult to find which VHS that it contains. Someone who is out there might still got them.

Main Khiladi Tu Anari
(1994)

Super Hit Film - Good action and comedy film.
First I remember I watched the short song clip on TV -'Main Khiladi Tu Anari' and I listened the song on the radio 'Paas woh aane lage', both good song and music as well. I was thinking that the film must be good film then I watched it all after released and it was brilliant. Few months later, I watched the song trailer on another video and there was one song that it never show in the film - 'Zubaan Khamosh Hoti Hai', I thought where that song and we didn't hear it. You can search it on youtube, it's there.

The reason why it was hit because Kadar Khan wrote the story (dialogue), I believe. See the opening credit on DVD or streaming video online. Kadar always made a good film, no matter if the film was low or big budget like 'Ghar Ho To Aisa', 'Pyar Ka Mandir',etc.

Kill Bill: Vol. 1
(2003)

Revenge - Kill Bill - Colour Version (Japanese DVD version)
Kill Bill 1 is actually better than Kill Bill 2. Good story but every chapters are abit too long and slow just like his previous films. You can watch the colour version if you buy a DVD from Japan and there are extra fight scenes.

Who can remember the song 'Woo-hoo'? It's very simple song.

Two years before the film released, I opened a magazine and saw a picture of Uma with the yellow suit, it reminds me of Bruce Lee's film - Game of Death. I thought it must be martial art film then I kept reading the articles, Quentin directed the first martial art film and Uma signed it to do the film.

Quentin hired Yuen Woo-ping who is a fight choreographer after the Matrix film. If Quentin knew Lau Kar Leung or have seen his films then the fighting styles will be completely different. Lau made some best Shaw Brother martial art films like 36th Chamber of Shaolin, Martial Club, Eight Diagram Pole Fighter, etc. Superstar Gordon Liu was in all these films and he was also in Kill Bill 2, Pai Mei.

DOA: Dead or Alive
(2006)

Bad scripts but good fight scenes.
I never played DOA game before in my life but it looks similar to Tekken. Maybe one day I will buy one and play it.

The film isn't good but good special effects and fight scenes too. The reason why I watched this film because I know the director 'Corey Yuen' who made some best martial art films like Ninja in the dragon's den, Righting Wrong and Fong Sai Yuk 1 and 2.

Tina vs Zack fight scene, Corey copied the exactly same fight choreography from 'She shoots straight (1990)'.

If you like Jet Li then watch Fong Sai Yuk 1 and 2, both good martial art movies, a lot of action and comedy.

Tang shan da xiong
(1971)

Bruce Lee's first film. Good story but sad.
I am a massive fan of Bruce Lee, this film is not better than Enter the Dragon or Fist of Fury but the story is good, the fight scenes are OK but look silly, we all know that it's old fashion.

I never buy video or DVD to watch this film but I recorded it on channel 4 in early 1997 and I still got the video tape. I think the Chinese language is mandarin, not cantonese, I might be wrong but it doesn't sound like cantonese. And the fight scene, Bruce killed the 'Big boss' with his bare hands and another scene, Bruce went to hotel to find out where the big boss is, both did actually show on TV, there might be more but I can't remember. While I copied the video to a new tape, I cut up the TV adverts and some unnecessary scenes because it was too long. I believe that some scenes were still exists that no-one have seen it before, I didn't realise and I should keep the whole version.

Sholay
(1975)

Brilliant Movie! Unmissable, unforgettable and enjoyable!
I watched this film probably more than 50 times since I bought DVD in early 2005. No-one can forget the story, dialogues and even the famous scenes after you watch the film once. Ramesh Sippy did really good job, all the actors and actresses are excellent.

You probably know about the original scenes - Gabbar Death and Sachin as well, I still got these scenes on my DVD. I remember when I watched it on video in early 1988 and again in 1996, it has English and arabic subtitles, the ending scene which Gabbar got arrest. Interesting, no-one know and never seen that one scene is still missing, when Basanti went to see Jai & Veeru and talked about their friendship, approx 1 mins. I remember some lines, Hema said 'You two seem very close friends', Dharamendra said 'We became very close friend when we were child and we never separate since then', this scene is not available on DVD or streaming online except the old video if it's still out there.

Buy DVD right now and watch it, you won't be disappointed. Enjoy.

Hum
(1991)

Three Superstars - Amitabh, Govinda and Rajnikant
Excellent comedy/drama/action film. I have seen this film so many times since I was young. I like the three songs - Ek Doosre Se Karte Hain Pyaar Hum, Jumma Chumma De De and Batdance, it's so funny.

I watched it again on freesat channel and youtube as well but there're some scenes are missing. I remember very well, I watched it on an original video (Apollo) and I also recorded it on channel 4 in 15 years ago, these scenes still there but sadly I lost it.

Deleted Scenes

1. Govinda's fake trophy. 2. Amitabh went to college to see Govinda's headteacher. 3. Extra song before ending credit - 'Ek Doosre Se Karte Hain Pyaar Hum'.
