Spiderhead
(2022)

Jeez I guess I misread the vibe
I thought it was great, good production design, cool story. The acting was pretty solid. Great music. Original concept for a sci fi prison film. People seem to be dissing on this film a bit, but check it out for yourself if you like Black Mirror or that kind of thing, or 80s pop music.

Fresh
(2022)

Decent
Similar vibe to Promising Young Woman with a dash of Hannibal and a sprinkle of American Psycho. Excellent acting all round, beautifully shot, and cool music choices. This could be Rick Springfield's comeback moment.

I Care a Lot
(2020)

Pretty good!
This film has really good pace, it never gets boring. Good acting, particularly from Dianne Wiest who could have done with more scenes. I'm blown away by the bad reviews for this film. I think it sits somewhere between a 6 and an 8 depending on how much you liked it, but there's no way it's a 1. The third act isn't as tight as the rest of it, but it still ends well enough. I think people are missing that this is essentially a comedy, and perhaps people sensed it would go in a different direction and were disappointed that it didn't focus more on a war between Pike and Wiest (which would have rocked). If you liked The Informer, Drive, and Gone Girl, check this one out.

Wrong Turn
(2021)

A solid horror/thriller
Ignore the haters who can't handle a movie that has some gay characters in it, and where not everyone cast is white. This isn't PC gone mad, it's just a slightly more realistic representation of what the world actually looks like that what we've been served up in the past. It's better than B grade, but not big budget hollywood. Production values pretty close to a movie like Cabin Fever. Good acting, sound, and cinematography. The story isn't super scary, it's more of a thriller, but the gore is more graphic than Midsommar. Well paced and quite a lot of story to get through in the run time. Reminded me a bit of The Wicker Man and No Escape. Perfect for a rainy Friday night.

Horse Girl
(2020)

Bit of a classic
Right from the opening titles and dreamy blue colour palate the film feels pretty classy. Alison Brie is always good but her performance here is perfect. Maybe because the story is somewhat based on the experiences of her own mother and grandmother there's a little something extra special in the acting. Worth checking out for her acting alone but I enjoyed the intriguing story, and exploration of mental health.

I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson
(2019)

Comedic genius
The whoopsie cushion sketch is one of the funniest and coolest things I've ever seen, showed it to the team at work and they were horrrifed. Must have watched that scene 10 times so far. The TC Huggers dancing scene that follows it is awesome, the song that goes with the commercial is cool, it's got great rewatchability. I guess conservative types might not be amused, but hell, this show is mind blowing, great acting, we'll shot, cleverly written and probably some improv in there too. I want to see more!

Skyscraper
(2018)

I'll give it a 5 for the ending
I don't want to spoil the ending so I won't and also I'm a massive fan of Dwane Johnson. This movie was a major let down, and the ending was also a bit unbecoming of a true Hollywood hero, but the ending also had a clever saving grace that can only really ever be done once, and skyscraper was the first film to pull it off, so even though the movie was a bit too light for my tastes, it's got a clever ending that I'll never forget.

The Predator
(2018)

Really enjoyable, witty, well paced film
After reading the reviews here I nearly didn't go see this. It's worth checking on the big screen. If you saw the trailer and thought it looks good, then I'd say you'll enjoy it. Likeable characters, great old school wise cracking dialogue, and we'll paced. It's got a 90s action comedy vibe. It's not PC but that's kinda refreshing too. Don't listen to the haters, I don't know what they're on about, it's a great movie. I remember people slagging off The Nice Guys and that rocked too.

Madeline's Madeline
(2018)

Pretty good
I disagree with the 1 Star review who says this movie has no reason to exist. Everyone is different right? I'd say mental illness is one of the more worthy themes to explore in a film. It's really well edited and shot. It's got some laughs. It's a bit erratic and dark and anxious, like the main character. The music and sound design is great. I'd say the 3 principal characters (Madeleine, her mum, the director) all give performances worthy of an Oscar nom. Yep, it's got an experimental vibe, it's kinda weird, but it's not eraserhead weird. Enjoy.

The Informers
(2008)

Worth checking out
Interesting film, well edited, well acted, well shot. Maybe the score was a bit basic, but the soundtrack was ironic and captured the superficial spirit of the period. Amazing performances from all the actors. I thought Tim Price was very good, and Basinger when she was shaking with rage was brill. Billy Bob is always cool, and the new id on the block, playing Graham was excellent in a subdued introspective difficult role. The film could have been fleshed out a little more, I felt particularly that Winona's character wasn't developed enough. After seeing it, the film has a lingering quality, I was thinking about it the next day. At the end I was thinking about all the characters who were impacted by the virus The horror was just beginning when the movie ends. In some ways this means the film doesn't end, but lives on in our imaginations. Well, depending on how much time you've got on your hands I guess. Anyway, it's a pretty cool movie but it could have been longer. I'd like to see, or particularly, help edit an alternate cut. I also want to meet the people who make sour cream and chive pretzels and shake their hand. And this is an aside, but it sounds like the moon is probably a space station. Check this movie out. It is pretty cool.

The Hero Cop: Yesterday and Today
(1973)

Short behind the scenes look at magnum force.
I have this on Super 8, it runs for 10 minutes and it's fascinating, and funny. It looks at the history of vigilante justice in America, and then absurdly links this in with "the new breed of police officer" that Dirty Harry is portraying in Magnum Force. Whoever's doing the voice-over sounds dead serious, but the story is baloney. It's just a good excuse to get behind the scenes of a 70's film, see how some scenes were directed, and see crazy car stunts with camera crews sitting in the trunk filming as the car does some pretty radical corner skids. It's got great old newsreel samples of a politician who looks likes he's been body snatched by aliens, as well as rare behind the scenes shots of Clint talking to director. It's very 70's and very cool if you're into that era . Well worth grabbing on super 8 or watching on DVD.
