Evidence
(2013)

Average, but with a hint of gold
QUICK FIRE REVIEW...GO!:

Evidence is a found footage horror/thriller that doesn't excel in any area, but has a terrific cast that play their roles fantastically. The movie definitely drags in places, but when it gets going it really does pull you along.

If you like found footage movies and/or who-did-it flicks, this is one to check out.

SPOILER WARNING:

I want to quickly list my main gripe: The ending.

I don't buy it AT ALL. These two girls display absolutely NO reason to do what they did. The actress is about to start her career, bringing her friend the director along for the ride. But then out of nowhere, it turns out it's these two girls are the masterminds of the events because they wanted to 'make a movie together'. What?? Why not actually make a damn movie?! It just didn't make ANY sense at all. They displayed absolutely NO inclination towards violence, yet I'm supposed to believe they masterminded a way to get all these people killed? Pfft, yeah right.

Other than that, it was worth a watch.

The Dark Tapes
(2016)

Not great
I'll be honest here, I love indie FF horror/sci-fi movies but even I thought this was bad.

There were some very good ideas on display, but the budget didn't stretch enough to make good on any of them. One segment starts well but, again, as it goes on it becomes apparent that I'm "watching a movie" (if that makes sense).

If this had some serious money behind it, it could've probably been a good film. But as it stands, I just wasn't impressed.

Area 51
(2015)

A solid yet forgettable flick
Straight to the point: it's not great, but it's certainly not bad. Starts rough, but eventually gets better when things start happening.

The characters won't hold this film up. But some cool special effects and clever little twists kept me watching.

Interior
(2014)

A wonderfully creepy micro-budget horror
First things first; the sound design and score of this flick is astounding. Seriously excellent work there.

The film builds tension very well, starting slowly at first but gradually building up as the movie continues. Sam is played well and, even though he seems a bit of a dick, is likeable nonetheless.

There are two 'ghosts'. Alice and Emily. Or maybe three? I'm not too sure who the guy ghost was, so it was a bit confusing there. When in the darkness, these ghosts are very creepy and had my hairs standing on end. However, when the light is on them/it, it looked very cheap. I know this was because of the tiny budget but I would've preferred not seeing it at all to be honest. I will say though that there was one scene when Sam is in the living room and a set of fingers appear around a door frame. That was the scariest moment for me. Just impeccably well shot.

The scene near the end was obviously inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey, but it seemed to go on longer than I would've liked. The ending was a little lacklustre, leaving me a bit disappointed to be honest.

Overall, if you can overlook the budgetary restraints, this is a good little horror film that contains all the right elements.

Just as an added note; on the movies website, there is a prelude short film that expands this 'universe'. Interesting for those who enjoyed it!

(2019)

A thought-provoking horror
I'm not sure why most of the user reviews I've read so far on IMDB have been extremely negative, but this movie deserves your attention.

An interesting start that piqued my attention, it just gets better as it goes on. The acting is absolutely phenomenal, the score is perfect (shout out to the Luniz remix(?) in the final dance/fight) and the cinematography is excellent. The story was a little confusing, but as the movie goes on and things get explained, it starts to make sense. It's a very interesting concept, it's just a shame I was left with a few questions when the credits rolled. Whether that's a bad or good thing is entirely up to you though.

If you like horror or enjoyed Peeles previous movie, this is definitely worth a watch. I was gripped the entire time.

Would definitely recommend. 8/10. :)

Dracula Untold
(2014)

A great dark fantasy movie
Great movie. Would've been a good start to the Dark Universe, had they not had a disastrous follow up with The Mummy.

The acting was great, the visuals were brilliant and the music was epic. The only let down was the fact that a sequel will never happen now. It's a shame really, because they set things up rather well.

February
(2015)

An eerie atmospheric horror/thriller
Terrific acting, an incredible soundtrack with top tier sound design and utterly beautiful cinematography do little to affect my rating, even if the film doesn't quite develop on its ideas as much as I'd like.

Hell House LLC
(2015)

Wonderfully creative found footage horror
This film left me speechless. It's a low budget found footage horror that made my skin crawl. I was gripped from start to finish. It does what it sets out to do so effectively that I almost forgot about the lack of budget.

It starts out interesting, watching a group of friends set up a haunted house attraction. But things soon take a turn for the weird.

If you're a fan of horror and/or found footage films, this is definitely worth a watch. What it lacks in budget, it more than makes up for with its creepiness.

Escape Room
(2017)

Not exactly a great effort
Some okay acting on show here, but it's goals far exceed its means.

If you're going to create tension with character moments, you need to have characters that I'm invested in and care about. Everyone in this movie is basically, for want of a better word, an douchbag. I never actually cared when anyone died.

The ending is also abysmal. The movie doesn't earn the right to have an ambiguous ending like that. The 'bad guy' does a little monologue at the end and it makes absolutely no sense.

I usually like quirky little horrors, but this one is probably best avoided.
