‘I never would’ve guessed that was him’: Disney Isn’t Beating Woke Allegations as ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ Makes Another Polarizing Change
Image
Disney has been receiving huge backlash for their alleged race-swapping of multiple legacy characters in their latest offerings. The studio has made multiple controversial decisions about the casting of some of its classic characters, trying to make them more, for lack of a better term, “woke-friendly”. However, this has not gone down well with a section of its fans.

The latest controversy is the look of Harry Osborn in the upcoming Disney+ series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. The animated series sees Peter Parker in his high school days trying to manage his academics and vigilantism. Fans have taken issue with Harry’s look, who seems to be race-swapped and is voiced by Zeno Robinson.

Image
Exclusive: The L.A.-based Screamfest Horror Film Festival has unveiled the first wave lineup for its 24th edition, taking place at the Tcl Chinese Theatre in Hollywood from October 8-17.

Among the films to look out for at this year’s festival are two produced for Hulu by WorthenBrooks (formerly 20th Digital Studio), on which we were first to report: Screamfest alum Brandon Espy’s Mr. Crocket and Justin Harding’s Carved, both of which will premiere on Hulu later this year.

A supernatural horror film starring Jerrika Hinton and Elvis Nolasco, Mr. Crocket follows Summer Beverly (Hinton) as she embarks on a chilling journey to rescue her son from a sinister children’s show host with otherworldly powers. Starring Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Carved is a fun romp centered on a group of survivors trapped in a Halloween village battle with a sentient, vengeful pumpkin.

My Wife And Kids Cast: Where They Are Now
Image
My Wife and Kids was an immensely popular sitcom in the early 2000s, but what has the cast been doing since the show went off the air? Debuting in 2001, My Wife and Kids told the story of the Kyle family, and the hilarious chaos surrounding their day-to-day suburban lives. The cast was headed up by co-creator Damon Wayans, and throughout its five seasons, My Wife and Kids was a consistent hit. Even if most of the main cast members weren't household names at the time, many of them went on to bigger and better things after the series went off the air.

Besides Wayans, veteran actor Tisha Campbell-Martin brought her years of experience to the project and helped to elevate it above the endless number of other sitcoms that clogged the airwaves at the time. As is the case with most sitcoms, the cast was a strong mix of youth and experience,...

Image
Image Source: Getty / Alberto E. Rodriguez

The Wayans family might be taking over our TV screens again, this time in a new potential series at CBS. On Oct. 10, Deadline exclusively reported that dream duo Damon Wayans, 62, and his son Damon Wayans Jr., 40, are set to star in an untitled father-son comedy at the network, which now has an official pilot order, per a Feb. 8 update.

According to the outlet, the multicamera sitcom "revolves around legendary talk radio host and happily divorced 'Poppa' (Wayans), who has to drag his grown son (Wayans Jr.), who has all his charm and none of his drive, kicking and screaming into adulthood before he turns 40." It'll be executive produced by the comedy pair, along with former "Last Man Standing" executive producer Kevin Hench, and cowritten by Wayans.

The yet-to-be-titled series marks Wayans's return to network comedy following his wildly successful sitcom "My Wife and Kids.

TV Review: ‘Happy Endings,’ ‘Don't Trust the B---- in Apt. 23’ Return to Crowded Night
Chicago – Two comedies that were on the bubble of cancellation just a few months ago are being thrown into the deep end on Tuesday nights by ABC, starting tonight. “Happy Endings” and “Don’t Trust the B—— in Apt. 23” return at 8pm Cst and face off with similarly skewing comedies on NBC (“Go On” & “The New Normal”) and Fox (“New Girl” & “The Mindy Project”).All of these shows are also reaching a point where they’re being watched more on Hulu or other On Demand services than live. So how will their success be determined?

Television Rating: 3.5/5.0

Perhaps there’s a better question — which ones are worth your time? I think the reason I lead with the pile-up of similar programming is because the quality level is also similar across the board. “New Girl” is probably the best of the six comedies but ABC may have the best overall hour...

Tricia O'Kelley
'Old Christine's' Tricia O'Kelley joins Roseanne Barr pilot at NBC
Tricia O'Kelley
TV's pilot season is starting to wind down, but a few final pieces of casting are taking place, including a changeup in Roseanne Barr's NBC comedy and CBS finding the the final lead for its comedy "Super Fun Night."

- Tricia O'Kelley, who played mean mom Marly Eckhardt on "The New Adventures of Old Christine," has joined the cast of "Downwardly Mobile," Barr's comedy pilot set at mobile home park. She replaces Salli Richardson ("Eureka"), who according to Deadline "could not sync up" with the other actors when the pilot had a run-through last week.

O'Kelley's character, Mrs. Denby, is the wife of a hedge-fund manager who has just lost all his money and hates being in the mobile park. She will clash with Barr's character, Rose, who manages the park. O'Kelley's credits also include recurring parts on "Secret Life of the American Teenager" and "Gilmore Girls."

Unsolicited Network Notes for "Happy Endings"
It’s back! Happy Endings, the sitcom starring six attractive young Chicagoans, returns this week with its fizzy brand of hip comedy. It stars some familiar faces--such as Casey Wilson from SNL, who was criminally axed after one season. And Elisha Cuthbert, who was criminally kidnapped quite often on 24. They’re joined by Eliza Coupe (Scrubs), Zachary Knighton (FlashForward), Damon Wayans Jr. (writer and actor on The Underground), and Adam Pally (Taking Woodstock).

Happy Endings’ first season was hit and miss--often within the same episode. It made for frustrating viewing because it clearly has the potential to be a big hit (which is why ABC has given it the time slot right after Modern Family on Wednesday nights). The cast is solid and the writing was frequently almost there.

Because we at AfterElton like to be helpful, here are a few unsolicited suggestions for the show’s writers and producers...

When San Francisco Police Department Det. Rebecca Madsen (Sarah Jones, “Sons of Anarchy”) is assigned to a grisly homicide case, a fingerprint leads her to a shocking suspect: Jack Sylvane (guest star Jeffrey Pierce, “The Nine”), a former Alcatraz inmate who died decades ago. Given her family history – both her grandfather and surrogate uncle, Ray Archer (Robert Forster, “Jackie Brown”), were guards at the prison – Madsen’s interest is immediately piqued, and once the enigmatic, knows-everything-but-tells-nothing government agent Emerson Hauser (Sam Neill, “Jurassic Park”) tries to impede her investigation, she’s doggedly committed. Damon Wayans on Working With His Son on 'Happy Endings' ... and Why They Went Clubbing Together
Damon Wayans
Filed under: Reality-Free, Features, Celebrity Interviews

If you've been watching the new ABC relationship comedy 'Happy Endings' and noticed that one of the actors looks and acts a lot like Damon Wayans, you're right. That actor is Damon Wayans, just not the one you usually think of. It's Damon Wayans Jr., son of the 'In Living Color' and 'My Wife and Kids' star. And if you ask Damon Wayans Sr., he's pretty proud of his son.

"Everybody says the same thing about him, that he's just a great guy, they just love him," Damon Sr. told me last week. "I call him Pancakes, because everybody loves pancakes."

Tonight, Damon Sr. will appear on 'Happy Endings' as -- what else? -- the uptight father of Damon Jr.'s character Brad, who lets loose after a health scare. The two have worked together before; Damon Jr. was a...

Elisha Cuthbert stars in ‘Happy Endings’

Interview by Michael Aaron Gallagher of StayFamous.Net

Elisha Cuthbert

Photo courtesy of ABC/Craig SjodinActress Elisha Cuthbert, who is best known for her role as Kim Bauer on the Fox drama “24” (starring Keifer Sutherland), and such films as “The Girl Next Door” (2004), “House of Wax” (2005), and the heart-pounding thriller “Captivity” (2007), returns to television in the new ABC comedy series “Happy Endings.” Although she is known for her dramatic on-screen performances, Cuthbert is taking on a new challenge – the television sitcom.

In the modern romantic comedy, “Happy Endings,” which recently premiered on ABC, she plays Alex, a runaway bride who leaves her fiancé at the altar. But her tightly knit group of friends is still bound together by their determination to negotiate the breakup, while still remaining friends with both Alex and her fiancé Dave.

TV Review: ABC’s Comedy ‘Happy Endings’ Breaks Streak of Awful ‘Friends’ Rip-Offs
Chicago – ABC’s new sitcom “Happy Endings” is undeniably yet another “Friends” rip-off, an attempt to make a pal-com about relationships, misunderstandings, and good buddies. I’ve seen enough of these things that I automatically get a bit defensive when they appear on my desk. If you sat through junk like “Traffic Light” and “Perfect Couples,” you would too. So no one is more surprised than me to report that “Happy Endings” works. It isn’t perfect but it’s much closer to the quality level of its inspiration than anything we’ve seen in the last few years.

TV Rating: 3.5/5.0

Remember how “Friends” opened with Ross being left at the altar by his wife? Guess what happens in the opening scene of “Happy Endings”? As if the 3-guys-3-girls parallel and general style of the show didn’t make its inspiration clear enough, “Happy Endings” opens with the same conceit,...

Happy Endings TV Review
ABC's Happy Endings is yet another in a growing list of recent premieres with titles that don't make a lot of sense to me (Don't get me started on Fox's Traffic Light, which at one point had the perfectly sensible working title Mixed Signals). A sort of next-gen Friends, Happy Endings kicks things up a notch by opening with the wedding of two of the six... friends. Alex (Elisha Cuthbert) and Dave (Zachary Knighton) are at the altar when Alex suddenly bolts, and that puts the entire group in a very sticky situation.

The remaining members of this particular social network - Alex's sister, Jane (Eliza Coupe) and husband Brad (Damon Wayans, Jr.), Max (Adam Pally) and Penny (Casey Wilson) - find out that life can get complicated when the people you spend all of your time with are struck by life-altering events.

Alex takes off on the Honeymoon, and the group,...
