Any chance of a new Friday the 13th movie going into production is on the distant horizon, but there are other things going on with the Friday the 13th franchise now that the copyright lawsuit between the original film’s producer / director Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller has ended with Miller gaining the copyright to the first movie in the United States. Miller and his lawyer Marc Toberoff have teamed up with Horror Inc., which is headed up by Robert Barsamian and holds the rights to the overall franchise, to develop a TV series called Crystal Lake for A24 and the Peacock streaming service, and last month it was announced that they’re launching the Jason Universe, which will involve “new Friday the 13th activations spanning a wide range of platforms from entertainment, games, immersive experiences, merchandise and more to be announced throughout 2024.” @JasonUniverse13 accounts were set up...

Last Friday (not the 13th) on our Horror Live Stream, Friday Night Frights (watch it embedded above), our host Tyler Nichols, inspired by the recent release of the indie horror flick, In A Violent Nature, opted to open up a discussion with viewers about what the best Friday the 13th movies are. We also ran a poll on the weekend (The Final Chapter and Jason Lives were nearly neck-in-neck). Keeping with the theme, we decided to take a deep, long-form dive into the franchise rankings ourselves.
While this list is all in good fun, I have to admit that I found it to be surprisingly difficult to put together. That’s because the Friday the 13th franchise is my favorite of all franchises and I love every one of these films. Ranking them was like trying to rank my major internal organs. Some may work better than others, but I need them all!

Earlier this week, we learned that iconic slasher Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th franchise will be a playable character in Warner Bros. and Player First Games’ upcoming video game MultiVersus, a free-to-play platform fighter game that will be making its way out into the world on May 28th as “a free download for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One consoles, and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), with full cross-play and cross-progression support.” Now Jason has gotten his own gameplay trailer, which can be seen in the embed above.
As a press release notes, this trailer show us that “Jason towers over the competition as a Tank class character with a scary moveset that incorporates his axe and machete weapons, teleporting ability to show up right behind opponents and stuff them into a sleeping bag, fatally folding a bed in half to launch enemies off the map,...

The copyright lawsuit between original Friday the 13th director / producer Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller, a case that dragged on for years, finally ended with Miller being awarded the copyright to the first movie within the United States. Fans were hoping that meant the path was clear for a new Friday the 13th film to go into production soon – but that’s not happening. During an appearance at the Texas Frightmare Weekend convention, Cunningham told fans we shouldn’t expect to see a new Friday the 13th movie for at least three more years.
Back in the glory days, a.k.a. the ’80s, we were getting new Friday the 13th movie from Paramount on a yearly basis, with 1983 and 1987 being the only years without a new F13 arriving on the screen. But things changed when the ’90s arrived. We only got one new movie, from New Line Cinema,...

We've got some not-great news for fans of Friday the 13th, particularly those who are eager to see Jason Voorhees return to the big screen. According to Sean S. Cunningham, who directed the original 1980 film, another movie is still a few years off, at the earliest.
Cunningham was in attendance at the recent Texas Frightmare Weekend, where he reunited with special effects icon Tom Savini and Friday the 13th final girl Adrienne King. Per Creepy Catalog, the group got to talking about the franchise as a whole and Cunningham provided his input on the current state of the Friday the 13th movies.
Interestingly, Cunningham doesn't necessarily think the messy battle over the franchise's legal rights is the issue at hand. He believes that the current problem preventing a new Friday the 13th movie from coming to fruition comes down to budgetary restraints. It sounds like New Line Cinema, the current...

On Halloween of 2022, it was announced that Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller would be developing a Friday the 13th series called Crystal Lake for A24 and the Peacock streaming service. The lengthy writers strike slowed down the progress of the show – but now that the strike is over, Crystal Lake is probably getting back on track, and since Friday the 13th has come back around on the calendar, we thought this would be a good time for us to share Everything We Know About Crystal Lake!
May 2024 Update: Well, we’re back to the drawing board, because A24 has decided to “go a different way” with the material, moving ahead with Crystal Lake without the involvement of Bryan Fuller. The search for a new showrunner is underway. So for right now, it could be said that we don’t know anything about what Crystal Lake will be. We only have an...

Jason Universe: Larry Zerner shares assessment of what’s going on with the Friday the 13th franchise
Back on Halloween of 2022, it was announced that original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller – fresh off winning the U.S. copyright to the 1980 film after a lawsuit that stretched on for years – was teaming up with his lawyer Marc Toberoff, franchise rights holder Rob Barsamian of Horror Inc., production company A24, the Peacock streaming service, and showrunner Bryan Fuller (whose credits include Hannibal and Pushing Daisies) to develop a new Friday the 13th streaming series called Crystal Lake. The project seemed to be on track to start filming this summer… but then, earlier this month, we learned that Fuller was booted from the project because A24 wanted to go in a “different direction.” While we wait to see what’s going to happen with Crystal Lake, Horror Inc. announced they’re launching the Jason Universe, which will consist of “new Friday the 13th activations that will span a wide range of platforms from entertainment,...

A24 and Peacock may be taking some time to figure out a new direction for their Friday the 13th series Crystal Lake, which recently lost showrunner Bryan Fuller, but the franchise rights holders at Horror Inc. have let it be known that Friday the 13th fans have a lot to look forward to as the rest of 2024 plays out. Through an exclusive report on IGN, Horror Inc. has announced that they’re launching Jason Universe. As for what exactly that is, IGN explains, “New Friday the 13th activations will span a wide range of platforms from entertainment, games, immersive experiences, merchandise and more to be announced throughout 2024 via @JasonUniverse13 on social media or by visiting the official Jason Universe website.”
As fans know, the Friday the 13th franchise was recently bogged down for several years due to a copyright lawsuit involving the original film’s director / producer Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller.

While we wait to see what happens with A24 and Peacock’s planned Friday the 13th TV series “Crystal Lake,” currently undergoing a showrunner change, Horror Inc. has announced Jason Universe via an exclusive report from IGN this afternoon, which is said to be the dawning of a “new era from the original owners of the Friday the 13th franchise.”
What does that mean, you ask? IGN details in their surprising report today, “New Friday the 13th activations will span a wide range of platforms from entertainment, games, immersive experiences, merchandise and more to be announced throughout 2024.”

Death, taxes, and longtime television showrunner Bryan Fuller parting ways with a project he was once involved in. There are only a few constants in life and, well, tax season is over and we're still here talking ... so feel free to take a wild guess about what just happened!
Horror fans are painfully aware of just how much trouble the "Friday the 13th" franchise has had in recent years. Mired for years in a complicated lawsuit between original screenwriter Victor Miller and director Sean Cunningham, the legal proceedings effectively put an end to any thought of continuing the beloved slasher series for the last decade and a half. Still, one glimmer of hope for Jason Voorhees appreciators -- not that any of us would ever condone the serial killer's actions, of course -- has been the development of a new prequel series titled "Crystal Lake," with Fuller attached as the...

Peacock and A24 will be proceeding with a new showrunner for the Friday the 13th prequel series.
Bryan Fuller confirmed today on social media that he is exiting the series.
“For reasons beyond our control, A24 has elected to go a different way with the material,” Fuller wrote. “We hope the final product will be something Friday the 13th fans all over the world will enjoy.”
You can see Fuller’s entire message below.
As we previously reported, Fuller’s prequel series, titled Crystal Lake, had scored a straight-to-series order at Peacock in 2022, with A24 as the studio. Fuller was to serve as writer, executive producer and showrunner, with Victor Miller, who wrote the original screenplay of the 1980 movie, Marc Toberoff, Miller’s copyright attorney, and Rob Barsamian, who produced the original movie, also exec producing.

Shudder and IFC Film are on a roll. Their release, Late Night With the Devil, wracked up a truly impressive $10 million gross at the domestic box office this winter, despite only being in limited release and only playing during a short window before its streaming debut. They’re also getting a lot of fresh critical attention for Caitlin Cronenberg’s debut, Humane (check out our interview with the director here). Horror fans love Shudder (including us), and sure enough, it looks like they might have another big winner on their hands with the violent slasher flick In a Violent Nature.

Quick: Name five stars who got their start in horror movies. This is such an easy question, even for much of today’s modern crop of Gen-z talent. So posing it in the 1980s is hardly fair. And yet, that is what Mia Goth’s eternally striving dreamer does at the top of the new MaXXXine trailer from A24.
“Jamie Lee Curtis, John Travolta, Demi Moore, and—” Maxine’s video store clerk buddy rattles off. She cuts him off before what surely must have been Kevin Bacon. At least it’s easy to presume this, because the trailer almost immediately cuts to a shot of a slightly older Bacon, who’s transitioned from big screen heartthrob to cinema statesman, stating, “My employer is a very powerful man.” Once upon a time, Bacon might’ve said the same thing about Sean S. Cunningham. After all, Bacon got his start in Cunningham’s ‘80s schlock classic,...

Jason Blum and James Wan have carved out a nice little partnership with some successful mid-budget horror movies. Recently, it was revealed that Blum’s dream project is to revive the Friday the 13th franchise. The classic slasher series hasn’t released a film since the 2009 Platinum Dunes reboot.

French production company, Indeprod, and Lisbon-based Luckymatrix have inked an innovative co-production deal for simultaneous filming of two €1million ($1.1 million) budget feature films in Portugal, in a 20-day shoot planned for the third quarter of 2024.
Both films are auteur-driven, French language genre films – slasher horror pic, “Mr. Morgan,” and paranormal thriller, “Behind.”
The co-producers are seeking funding from the Cnc and French broadcasters and plan to present both projects to Portugal’s cash rebate scheme – which offers up to a 30% rebate – when the call opens this spring.
They believe that the twin shoot will generate economies of scale, lowering the cost per pic by 30%.
The creative team, crew, and equipment will stay in the same location, while shooting in two nearby locations – a lighthouse and a period building. They are currently scouting locations along the coast of Portugal.

Sean S. Cunningham will always be primarily remembered for directing the original Friday the 13th, but he has taken the helm of some other movies that are worth checking out, like 1985’s The New Kids and the subject of the latest entry in our Black Sheep video series, DeepStar Six (get it Here).

After the success of Ridley Scott’s Alien, the world saw a surge in sci-fi movies centered around blue-collar workers finding themselves up against terrifying creatures, usually in a dark, dank, remote setting. Some of these rip-offs were studio affairs, but a majority of them were made for the home video and late-night cable markets, where the cheap sets and shoddy effects weren’t such big deals. Who among us hasn’t enjoyed a low-budget monster flick that was clearly made for the price of a six-pack? 1989 brought us not one but three sci-fi movies that had at least partial inspiration from Alien and its sequel, Aliens. The latter film’s director, James Cameron, brought us his underwater epic The Abyss, which isn’t a horror film but certainly takes some cues from those earlier movies. Deepstar Six was Sean S. Cunningham’s attempt to bring the slasher movie underwater,...

For the entirety of my twenties and a chunk of my thirties, I knew the inebriated pleasure of debating the most trivial subjects known to humankind via what we used to call the "bar argument." Oh sure, people still knock back beers and fiercely debate the Hegelian messaging of the "Airport" franchise, but there was a time, a glorious time, when an elbow-tipping blowhard could loudly assert as fact that "The White Shadow" was an "All in the Family" spinoff, and no one could pull a rectangular device out of their pocket to authoritatively prove they're utterly full of horse pucky. Short of pulling Norman Jewison out from behind the jukebox for a McLuhan-esque correction, this dolt could double and triple down, and all you could do was yell at them. We've lost so much.
The best bar arguments tended to revolve around song lyrics, but movie quotes ran a very close second.

A couple years ago, Marvel received copyright termination notices from comic book artist / writer Larry Lieber and the estates of fellow artists / writers Gene Colan, Steve Ditko, Don Heck and Don Rico that would have caused them to lose the sole copyrights to such characters as Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and others, as well as titles like Amazing Fantasy, The Avengers, Captain America, Daredevil, Iron Man, Journey Into Mystery, Marvel Super-Heroes, Strange Tales, Tales to Astonish, Tales of Suspense, and Tomb of Dracula. As reported in 2021, Marvel filed a series of lawsuits in response to those copyright termination notices. Now The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that all of those lawsuits have been settled.

The mythology for the long-running "Friday the 13th" film series has been notoriously shabby and amorphous. At the end of Sean Cunningham's 1980 original slasher, it was revealed that Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) had witnessed her developmentally disabled son Jason drown in Crystal Lake years earlier, largely thanks to the neglect of the boy's randy, sex-distracted counselors. Pamela set about getting madness-inspired spiritual revenge by murdering any new counselors who deigned to have sex at Camp Crystal Lake. Luckily, Pamela was killed before she could commit any more murders than she already did.
In Steve Miner's "Friday the 13th Part 2," however, it was revealed that Jason (Steve Daskewisz and Warrington Gillette) was still alive, living in the woods for decades, presumably unbeknownst to his mother. But Jason, it is revealed, knew his mother was killing people and witnessed the events of the first "Friday." Why, one will immediately ask,...

Both 1978’s Halloween (watch it Here), directed by John Carpenter and 1980’s Friday the 13th (watch it Here), directed by Sean S. Cunningham both stand out as those proverbial slashers that stood the test of time and have spawned countless sequels throughout its franchise run. It’s without a doubt that both Halloween and Friday the 13th share distinct similarities throughout their first iterations. Both movies are...

The slasher boom of the 1980s was a wild time, where filmmakers were attempting to capitalize off of the popularity of films like John Carpenter's "Halloween" and Sean S. Cunningham's "Friday the 13th," while also trying not to appear like a cheap rip-off of either title. This led to success stories like the "Child's Play/Chucky" franchise, or colossal failures like "Boggy Creek II: And the Legend Continues." And then there are films like 1983's "Sleepaway Camp," a slasher film viewed as a classic by some and unforgivable schlock by others. There are five (you read that right) films in the series, but none have been able to capture the magic or reputation of the first one. Introducing scream queen Felissa Rose in her very first feature, "Sleepaway Camp" is a notorious bit of '80s camp (literal and metaphorical) known for casting actual teenagers to play the campers.

Stand-up comedian / actor Bill Burr just made his feature directorial debut with the Netflix-released comedy Old Dads (you can read the JoBlo review at This Link), which is cool and all… but here on Arrow in the Head, the horror side of the JoBlo Network, we’re more interested in hearing Burr’s opinions on horror films. That’s why it caught our attention when YouTuber James Whale Bake Sale made a video to go with a clip from Burr’s podcast Monday Morning Podcast in which the comedian discusses the horror classic Friday the 13th – and goes on to explain why he stopped watching horror movies.
The video can be seen at the bottom of this article, and over the course of its five minutes he admits that the final jump scare in Friday the 13th really did scare the hell out of him, says that the franchise...

Counting Ronny Yu's 2003 mash-up film "Freddy vs. Jason" and a remake in 2009, there have been twelve "Friday the 13th" movies to date. There would likely have been more by now -- poetically speaking, shouldn't there be at least 13 of them? -- but production on further sequels has been stymied by some complex litigation; Victor Miller, the original screenwriter of 1980's "Friday the 13th," has argued in court that a labyrinthine series of business transfers put the rights to the original movie back in his name, while producer/director Sean S. Cunningham asserts that his company owns the rights due to a 40-year-old work-for-hire contract. Until that dispute is settled, no further "Friday the 13th" movies are likely to be made.
That hasn't stopped ideas from being floated. Rumors have circulated for years about potential "Friday" sequels. The screenwriters of the 2009 remake wrote a direct sequel to their movie that was never made.

Steve Miner's "Halloween H20: 20 Years Later" was the seventh "Halloween" film, but it came during a slasher revival that was sparked by the success of Wes Craven's "Scream" two years earlier. "H20" ignored the mythology laid out in "Halloween III: Season of the Witch," "Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers," "Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers," and "Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers."
The film caught up with Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), still overcoming the trauma of Halloween night back in 1978 (covered in "Halloween" and "Halloween II"), and learning to live with the fact that Michael Myers is her brother. Moreso, "H20" focuses on Laurie's son John (Josh Hartnett) and his hip-talking teen peers. The teen cast contained a few notable stars-to-be, including Michelle Williams and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. In Sean S. Cunningham's 1980 slasher flick "Friday the 13th," Kevin Bacon plays a camp counselor named Jack who meets a memorable end. Jack and his girlfriend Marcie (Jeannine Taylor) enjoy a zesty round of marijuana and coitus while, unbeknownst to them, the corpse of their friend Ned (Mark Nelson) is stored in the ceiling above them. Marcie leaves to take a shower, and Jack lays back on the bed to relax and have a toke. A drop of blood lands on his brow. Jack is momentarily confused. His confusion doesn't last long, however, as the hand of a mysterious killer -- possibly the presumed-dead Jason Voorhees -- pops up from under the bed and grabs him by the forehead. An arrow pushes up from underneath the bed, puncturing Jack's neck from behind. The arrowhead emerges from his throat, and blood spurts up onto his face. Jack dies wearing a startled expression.

Halloween approaches and with it the desire to revisit some of your favorite horror movie franchise, in order, from start to finish. What better franchise to binge than “Friday the 13th,” the celebrated slasher film series that started with Sean S. Cunningham’s 1980 original before spawning sequels that would introduce iconic killer Jason Voorhees before sending him to Manhattan, outer space and back in time (Ok we made that last one up).
Ostensibly the cornerstone of the 1980s slasher film craze, “Friday the 13th” is one of the more inventive franchises, particularly when the concept was given a little more elasticity. For more than a decade, though, the franchise has been fully dormant – the last movie was 2009’s Michael Bay-produced reboot/remake “Friday the 13th.” A24 did recently announce a “Crystal Lake” series to be overseen by “Hannibal”/”Pushing Daisies” mastermind Bryan Fuller, so at least we have that to look forward to!

As of this writing, there have been 12 films in the long-running "Friday the 13th" series. Initially produced by Sean Cunningham, and featuring an undead, mute, masked killer named Jason Voorhees, the "Friday the 13th" movies once used to be as ubiquitous as the "Saw" films were in the early 2000s. From 1980 to 1989, audiences enjoyed pretty much one "Friday" every year ('83 and '87 went without). In the glut of hastily made sequels, one might forget how simple and perfect the original "Friday the 13th" concept was. The first movie was, by Cunninham's own admission, a mere knock-off of John Carpenter's 1978 film "Halloween," but the sequels soon became legitimate peers to their forebears, and came to define the slasher era in earnest (for better and for worse). Cunningham's admiration of "Halloween" can be found in David Grove's 2005 book "Making Friday the 13th: The Legend of Camp Blood."

"Friday the 13th" wasn't originally intended to go on to manifest multiple murderous sequels featuring Jason Voorhees as a machete-wielding madman. The famed hockey mask didn't even make it into the films until "Friday the 13th Part III." No, the initial killing spree at Camp Crystal Lake was carried out by Jason's mother, Mrs. Pamela Voorhees, played by the illustrious Betsy Palmer.
Rather famously, Palmer wasn't exactly thrilled initially to be participating in a fairly low-rent horror film surrounded by young, up-and-coming starlets whose acting experience paled in comparison to her rather impressive filmography dating back to the Golden Age of television during the early '50s. The budget for the first "Friday the 13th" didn't really allow for a big marquee name, and Palmer wasn't even the first choice to play the role. The film that kicked off the franchise sees swimsuit-clad young adults picked off one by one in gruesome fashion at the site of an unsolved double murder
Sean S Cunningham’s teen horror classic from 1980 is now rereleased: this is the original movie, the ancestral prequel or origin myth machine-tooled to create a franchise, that readies the noisome and mostly offscreen figure of Jason Voorhees as an almost supernatural surviving villain of the future series – although this went against the idea of his supposed death in this film as the premise for a more rational psychological thriller. This franchise clearly arose from the wild popularity of John Carpenter’s Halloween, although Friday the 13th openly borrows from a much more venerable model, Hitchcock’s Psycho, in the screeching Herrmannesque strings and the oedipal complex behind the horror – although this one being rather ingeniously showed from the point of view of the mother,...

Friday the 13th: The Game was held back from reaching its full potential due to the copyright lawsuit between the original Friday the 13th‘s producer/director Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller, and now it’s in the final days of its licensing deal. Since the lawsuit is over and the writers strike has ended, Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller will be able to get back to the work on the Friday the 13th TV series (called Crystal Lake) that he’s developing for rights holders Miller and Rob Barsamian (plus Miller’s lawyer Marc Toberoff), A24, and the Peacock streaming service. But while we wait to see how Crystal Lake is going to turn out and sadly watch Friday the 13th: The Game reach its end, G Fuel is providing us with something to drink. They have a Friday the 13th-inspired energy drink called Hack ‘N’ Slash Citrus Fruit Punch – and on Friday,...

It was heartbreaking when the copyright dispute between original Friday the 13th producer/director Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller came up and brought any further development of the extremely cool Friday the 13th video game to a screeching halt. Now here’s another franchise video game heartbreaker: the folks at Saber Interactive have announced that they won’t be developing any new content for Evil Dead: The Game, and plans to bring the game to Nintendo Switch have been abandoned.
Here’s the announcement:

No information was given on exactly why Saber had decided to set aside any further development of the game. It would be odd if there are licensing issues, because the rights to the overall Evil Dead franchise seem to be rather clear cut: they’re owned by franchise creator Sam Raimi, producer Rob Tapert, and star Bruce Campbell.

Nielsen is putting a new media yardstick out of arm’s reach, for the time being.
Nielsen backed off a plan to incorporate first-party data from Amazon in its study of the audience for the company’s streamcast of “Thursday Night Football.” a move that was opposed by TV networks, putting to rest — at least for the moment — the idea that the measurement giant might utilize inputs from the companies it examines in its national viewership methodology.
“Our aim is to ensure the process with which we introduce new ways of measuring audiences is inclusive of client feedback and held to the highest standards,” Nielsen said in a statement Thursday. “For now, Nielsen’s panel-only National TV service will remain the currency of record. First-party data will be included in Big Data in National measurement figures, which are available to all customers separately.”

Nielsen and an industry trade group are at odds over the former’s plan to fold in Amazon viewer data to ratings for the coming season of Thursday Night Football.
The ratings service is planning to incorporate some first-party data from Amazon into its national panel ratings for the 2023 season. Last year, Amazon and Nielsen signed a first-of-its-kind deal for Nielsen to provide ratings for Tnf games, putting the streaming telecasts on equal footing with NFL games on broadcast and cable. Amazon also put out its own numbers, however, which were frequently a good bit higher than the Nielsen ratings.
Earlier this year, Nielsen invited sports broadcasters join a working group about integrating first-party streaming data into national averages for live sports. Here’s an act of counting that isn’t going to be as easy as 1-2-3.
Representatives of 80 different parties will at some point on Wednesday hear the latest about technology that will help tabulate the number of people who watch a streaming presentation of “Thursday Night Football.” Such a task is typically left to Nielsen. But Amazon Prime Video, which streams the NFL showcase each week during the season, wants to add its own audience measures into the mix. And the Media Rating Council, an independent body backed by the media and advertising industries that examines companies that provide audience-measurement service, is considering the ramifications of doing so.
In the past, such a prospect might seem abhorrent (it might seem so to some parties in the present as well). Why, after all, would Nielsen, an independent arbiter of video viewership, incorporate data from a company that stands to...
