What do we want from a spinoff? More time with a favorite supporting character, as with Frasier or Better Call Saul? An expansion of a compelling mythos, as with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine or House of the Dragon? Or perhaps a deeper exploration of some potent themes, as with Rugrats offshoot All Grown Up?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff Angel fulfilled all of those criteria and more.
Premiering in 1999, with its first four seasons running concurrently with Buffy, Angel’s eponymous hero was a reformed vampire, the ex-lover of his parent show’s titular Slayer. The spinoff imported several other characters from Buffy, transplanting them from the small town milieu of Sunnydale to the sinister sprawl of Los Angeles, a darker, more complex setting where demons and vampires rubbed shoulders with high powered lawyers and politicians. It occupied an interesting position in the cultural landscape, airing alongside shows like...

Don't let the title fool you: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" isn't the only one of her kind. The "Slayer" line goes back millennia, and when one falls, another young girl is called on by destiny. In the season 1 finale, "Prophecy Girl," Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) briefly dies but is revived. The writers took advantage of that technicality in season 2 to introduce another slayer, Kendra (Bianca Lawson) — but she met a swift end.
Enter Faith Lehane (no relation to Dennis) in season 3, played by Eliza Dushku and sharing her actress' Boston origins. Her name is a virtue, but Faith is a rebel — so much so, she bounces from ally to enemy and then back again. In an interview with "Buffy" writers and producers, they discussed how, from the beginning, Faith was meant to be a "psycho" Slayer who would be a foil for Buffy. Marti Noxon called her Buffy's "shadow self,...

A dance tribute to the late Len Goodman left his fellow judges in tears on Tuesday night’s episode of “Dancing With the Stars.”
After a heartfelt clips package remembering the beloved but often critical scorer, pro dancers took the floor in black tuxes and flowing white ball gowns for a Waltz set to Henry Mancini’s “Moon River.” The Oscar-winning song was a favorite of Goodman’s.
The number was choreographed by Val Chmerkovskiy and Jenna Johnson and performed by past pro dancers Kym Herjavec, Anna Trebunskaya, Karina Smirnoff, Edyta Sliwinska, Tony Dovolani, Louis van Amstel, Maks Chmerkovskiy and Mark Ballas.

At the end of the routine, a spotlight shined on the seat left empty by Goodman’s death as the dancers held out a hand in a graceful homage.

On Tuesday night’s episode of “Dancing With the Stars,” Mira Sorvino and her daughter recreated the trio dance from “Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion” and the first 10 scores were handed out.
Sorvino’s 18-year-0ld daughter Mattea, who is part of a dance company, joined her mom and her partner Gleb Savchenko for a far less goofy version of the much-gif-ed routine from the 1997 comedy. Bruno Tonioli said the routine, which was set to “Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper was “beautiful,” and Carrie Ann Inaba said it “tugged on her heartstrings.” It earned the actress, who currently costars on “Shining Vale,” a 22/40 and her first “8” score of the season.

Alyson Hannigan, who’s been in the bottom two more than once this season on “Dancing With the Stars,” is realistic about her chances of winning the dance competition.
“I know I’m not the best dancer. I’m never going to be the best dancer,” she told TheWrap ahead of Tuesday night’s episode. ” The fact that I’m still here, I’m so grateful.”
Hannigan said she’s not letting scores in the 4, 5 and 6 range get her down. “I’m not really putting my energy and focus on that,” she said. “I listen to the judges’ advice, and I try to bring that to the next dance and I really work my hardest, but it certainly doesn’t come naturally to me. I can’t be in it for the scores. I’m never going to see a 10. I’m Ok, I’ve accepted that.”

Burbank, CA – One of the Man of Steel’s most personal tales in DC history – from the mind of comics icon Grant Morrison, and produced under the expert oversight of animation legends Bruce Timm and Dwayne McDuffie – All-Star Superman will be available to own on 4K Ultra HD for the very first time on April 18, 2023 from Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment.
Grant Morrison’s beloved, Eisner Award-winning vision of Superman’s heroic final days on Earth is brought to exquisite, animated life in All-Star Superman. The film begins as the Man of Steel rescues an ill-fated mission to the Sun (sabotaged by Lex Luthor) but, in the process, is oversaturated by radiation – which accelerates his cell degeneration. Not too many series make it to five seasons and those that do often feel like they've run out of gas by the time they get there. It's incredibly rare for a show's final season to be its best and yet, that's somehow the case with "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" spinoff, "Angel." After a strong, but largely episodic freshman outing, the series evolved into a truly great show in its 2nd and 3rd seasons, expanding on Angel's own mythology and exploring the complexities of what it means to fight an unwinnable battle. Things fell apart with season 4, which, despite having its moments, was far too serialized for its own good and also suffered from creatives whose focus was majorly split.
"Angel" is all about redemption, so what better season could there be than the one in which the show redeems itself? Thanks to a major paradigm shift, the spinoff returned revitalized for its fifth season,...

Much like its parent show "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel" relied heavily on metaphor. However, while "Buffy" dealt with the high school experience, only truly going dark in its later seasons, "Angel" always sought to tell more adult-oriented stories. The spin-off never quite reached the same heights of the original, but it came pretty damn close, and there are certain aspects of the series that were even stronger. For one, just about every character who made the jump from "Buffy" to "Angel" was the better for it. Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter), Wesley (Alexis Denisof), Faith (Eliza Dushku), and Darla (Julie Benz) all went from being relatively one-dimensional, to becoming some of the best characters in the entire Buffyverse. Even Harmony (Mercedes McNab) was vastly improved.
Perhaps the biggest revelation was Angel (David Boreanaz) himself. A broody hunk who was far more interesting when he actually went evil, Buffy's former beau was...

Hilary and Anna Shakespeare’s first film, coming of age comedy Soundtrack to Sixteen, struck a chord with me. Of course it did; it was set right around the time I was a teenager, with characters who felt very much like myself and my friends at the time. Unfortunately, the cinema release coincided with the start of the first Covid lockdowns, and it still hasn’t been as widely seen as it should be. Two years later, the Shakespeare Sisters have returned to coming of age rom-com, this time with a modern set adaptation of a play by an illustrious namesake.

A new trailer has arrived for ‘Under My Skin’, an independent feature starring four non-binary actors in its ensemble cast.
The story follows Denny (they/them), a free-spirited artist falls for Ryan, a strait-laced lawyer climbing the corporate ladder. Young love ensues, but when Denny begins to explore gender, Ryan’s ingrained values are challenged. As Denny finds they can no longer ignore their true self, pressures and tensions mount with Ryan, and the couple seek to negotiate the shifting sands.
The feature debut of Australian writer-director David O’Donnell, the lead character, Denny, is played by four different actors who identify as non-binary, or trans non-binary: Hewson, Bobbi Salvor Menuez and newcomers Lex Ryan, Chloe Freeman. Alex Russell and Alexis Denisof also star.

"I don't fit in this body!" A festival promo trailer has debuted for an indie romantic drama titled Under My Skin, marking the feature directorial debut of Australian filmmaker David O'Donnell. It is premiering at the Raindance Film Festival in London this week - hence the trailer to go along with the premiere. One of the first ever films to deal with non-binary gender as a part of the plot. Denny, a free spirit and artist falls for Ryan, a straight laced lawyer. But when Denny questions gender their love is tested. The lead character, Denny, is played by four different actors who identify as non-binary, or trans non-binary: Liv Hewson, Bobbi Salvör Menuez, and newcomers Lex Ryan and Chloe Freeman. The cast includes Alex Russell and Alexis Denisof. I'm very curious to see how this film handles sexual identity as a key part of the story. Here's the official...

In a big win for non-binary representation in entertainment, the dramatic independent film “Under My Skin” will make its world premiere at London’s Raindance Film Festival on Oct. 29.
Liv Hewson stars as Denny, a free-spirited artist, who falls for a straight-laced, corporate lawyer named Ryan, played by Alex Russell; but the young romance is tested when Denny begins to explore their gender identity. Though the film has yet to debut, Hewson is nominated for Best Performance at the fest for their role.
Alexis Denisof also stars in the movie, which marks the feature debut of Australian writer-director David O’Donnell. The film is produced by Raynen O’Keefe and Russell. Executive producers are Paul Nelson, Paul Bernard, Tim Larson and Mary Larson.

Legacies is doing the unthinkable.
It is keeping The Vampire Diaries franchise alive without the dreaded sophomore slump in its second season.
From Legacies Season 2 Episode 1, it was clear the show had hit its stride, and it only continued to do so throughout the first half of Legacies Season 2.
Hope's pain as the world she knew and loved forgot about her, Lizzie coming into her own, dark magic invading the walls of the Salvatore School are just some of the solid storylines that came out to play throughout the first eight episodes.
We've put together our thoughts on how the series is progressing, as well as our thoughts on what the show could be doing better. Check out the full rundown below.
Best New Storyline: Clarke Posing as Professor Vardemus
Clarke is a crafty individual. It's never immediately clear where his loyalty lies, and that's part of the beauty of such a character.

There's a new headmaster at the Salvatore School, and he runs things a little differently than the previous one.
Alexis Denisof debuted as Professor Vardemus on Legacies Season 2 Episode 2, and there's bound to be some drama between him and Alaric Saltzman.
Denisof recently spoke to TV Line about his role on the successor to The Vampire Diaries and The Originals.
"While (Vardemus) has a modicum of respect for the efforts that Alaric made in holding the school together and fighting the various monsters off, that's a small part of how he feels," he told the outlet.
"There's more conflict there than there is agreement about style, content, and curriculum.

Alexis Denisof (Angel) made his long-awaited debut as Headmaster Vardemus on this week’s Legacies, and while we won’t deny the sorcerer’s ability to rally a crowd, we’re not ready to trust him just yet.
Our suspicions about the Salvatore School’s shady new leader intensified in the final moments of Thursday’s episode when he invited Josie to participate in a brand-new curriculum designed for advanced students — a reward after catching her giving one of her classmates a magical bloody nose.

Josie Saltzman is flirting with darkness.
On Legacies Season 2 Episode 3, the Salvatore School and Mystic Falls High compete in the annual football tournament.
Now that Hope is a full-fledged member of the latter school, she will find herself in a tough position.
She will be forced to witness Josie and Landon's mounting chemistry and try to keep her cool.

But Josie is clearly worried about the way Landon looks at Hope. In one scene of the promo, the Gemini twin says the following:

This also means Josie knows about Landon's heart-to-heart with Hope that played out on Legacies Season 2 Episode 2.

As announced this summer at San Diego Comic-Con, Descendants actor Thomas Doherty is joining the show’s second season as Sebastian, “a very old vampire with old ideas about the way things work.” And Lizzie Saltzman is more than happy to welcome him to town — even if the mere sight of him does cause her to trip over her words a bit.

Legacies is taking a slightly different approach to vampires in Season 2. Matt Donovan will not be the sheriff of Mystic Falls when Legacies Season 2 launches later this year.
TV Line is reporting that Bianca Kajlich (Rules of Engagement) will take on the role of Sheriff Mac, the lady in charge of the town we've loved since The Vampire Diaries debuted almost ten years ago.

Here is a wrap-up of all the news you need to know from Wednesday, August 21, 2019.
Legacies is adding another new addition to its ranks for Season 2.
Deadline is reporting that The Fosters veteran Bianca Santos has been added in a recurring capacity.
She will play a "sharp-tongued and flirtatious” Mystic Falls High School student named Maya.
She will be the daughter of the new Sheriff in town, who goes by the name of Mac. There's no telling what became of Matt Donovan, but given that he's survived every deadly scenario in Mystic Falls, he may be off taking some much-needed respite.
Related: Legacies Adds Thomas Doherty
Maya also has a brother named Ethan, so there's that.
The good news here is that it sounds like we'll be spending more time in the town as opposed to just the high school setting.
Alexis Denisof and Thomas Doherty were previously added to the Season 2 cast.
