Magnolia Pictures has acquired the U.S. rights to Buffaloed, the Tribeca Film Festival comedy from director Tanya Wexler (Hysteria) and producer-star Zoey Deutch, the scene-stealing co-star of Zombieland: Double Tap.
Magnolia has set Valentines Day as a theatrical and on-demand release date for Buffaloed.
“Buffaloed is a hoot from start to finish,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “Tanya Wexler’s direction is perfectly on point and Zoey Deutch kicks major ass.”
The full synopsis from Magnolia describes Buffaloed as “an engrossing comedy about a natural-born hustler and her descent into the unorthodox world of debt collection as a way out of her seemingly dead-end life in Buffalo, New York. Buffalo is the debt collection capital of America, though Peg Dahl (Zoey Deutch) never saw herself in that world. She’s bet on her sharp mind—and even sharper mouth—to get her out of town and into an Ivy League university.

Exclusive: Vertical Entertainment has acquired rights to Code 8, the crowd-funded sci-fi thriller spearheaded by cousins Stephen and Robbie Amell, who executive produce and star. Vertical is planning a theatrical release for the film, directed by Jeff Chan, day-and-date near the end of this year.
Code 8, written by Chris Pare, is set in a world where 4% of the population is born with some type of supernatural ability, but instead of being superheroes, they are heavily policed and live in poverty. Connor Reed (Robbie Amell) is a powerful young “electric” struggling to pay for his ailing mother’s medical treatment. To earn money, he joins a lucrative criminal world led by Garrett (Stephen Amell), who teaches him how to use his powers to pull off a series of increasingly dangerous crimes. Sung Kang (Fast & Furious) and Greg Bryk (Ad Astra) also star.

Filming to continue in Toronto until mid-July 2017; Elevation targets 2019 Canada release.
Principal photography has commenced on Jeff Chan’s sci-fi thriller Code 8.
Code 8 is set in a world where four percent of the population is born with supernatural powers and face discrimination and a life of privation. The film centres on a young man with abilities who clashes with a militarised police unit after committing a series of crimes.
Robbie Amell and Stephen Amell star alongside Sung Kang, Kari Matchett, Greg Bryk, and Aaron Abrams.
The film is based on Chan’s short film of the same name that inspired an Indiegogo campaign in 2016 that exceeded its initial $200,000 goal by raising more than $1.7m, allowing for production to begin on the feature version.
In addition to the Indiegogo funds raised, Code 8 is financed by Telefilm Canada and the Fyzz Facility.

Exclusive: It’s good that Will Sasso has landed the title role in a movie, but I’m led to wonder why so many film companies press forward with naughty titles knowing full well they will never make it to the screen because newspapers and TV can’t run the advertising. Sasso, most recently seen as Curly in the Farrelly Brothers-directed The Three Stooges, has signed to star opposite David Koechner in director Andrew Currie’s suburban comedy feature My Asshole Neighbor. Sasso will portray Jerry, a loud, rude redneck who moves next door to a professional mediator Paul (Koechner), turning his world upside down. Once his private little patch of peaceful suburbia is invaded, the usually peace-loving Paul finds himself waging war on Jerry — which ultimately begs the questions, who’s really the asshole, and which sphincter will prevail? Produced by Mary Anne Waterhouse, the film will shoot mid-August in Vancouver.
