Could Another Streaming Service Be the Answer to Having Too Many Choices? This New Platform Hopes So
We’ve all been there: Endlessly scrolling through the hundreds of movies served to you by the Netflix algorithm — only to come to the conclusion that there’s just nothing to watch. Then on to Hulu, or Amazon Prime Video, or any one of the other major streaming services, only to be faced with the same problem.
What if the solution to the paradoxical problem of too many choices but nothing to watch lies in yes, another streaming service? The team behind a newly launched streamer, Curia, hopes that could be the case.
Rather than hundreds of options served up by technology, Curia wants to deliver “only the good stuff” by programming around 80 features a month in a rotating selection of collections like this month’s New York Stories, featuring “King of New York,” “Light Sleeper,” and eight other films that take viewers across the boroughs and through decades. For just $3.99 a month,...

Exclusive: One week after we brought you news of his app Erupt, today we can reveal that film and Broadway producer Edward Walson (Blue Jasmine) is launching Curia, a curated film streaming SVOD platform.
The idea behind the platform — which is initially only available in the U.S. — is to offer rotating monthly programming organized into niche sub-genres. Organizers say the service will be a fixture on the film festival circuit — including the upcoming Cannes Film Festival and market — with an appetite for new, exclusive acquisitions, including shorts.
The lineup will include auteur-driven cinema, movie classics and some commercially-minded fare. The first month’s programming in June will include sections such as Lol (comedies), Growing Pains (coming-of-age), Les Provocateurs and LGBTQ Pride.
Movies at launch will include Some Like It Hot, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, In The Loop, Capote, Birdman Of Alcatraz, Paths Of Glory, A Ciambra, Boyhood, The Selfish Giant,...

Pretty Woman: The Musical will end its Broadway run on August 18, when the show will have played 27 preview and 421 regular performances at the Nederlander Theatre since its debut last August.
Producers revealed the news Wednesday, saying the musical will begin performances in Hamburg, Germany in late September. A U.S. national tour will kick off in October 2020.
The musical, which was shut out of Tony nominations this year, was the highest-grossing and longest-running new musical of the 2018-2019 Broadway season. It has broken the Nederlander’s eight-performance weekly box office record four times during its run.
Based on the 1990 blockbuster movie starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, Pretty Woman: The Musical opened on August 13, 2018 with Samantha Barks and Andy Karl in the lead roles. John Gotti Jr. thinks the story of his father’s life should at least be playing on a few more screens on the Gambino family’s home turf. The son of the notorious mobster is distressed that “Gotti” is only playing a few theaters in Brooklyn.
“It’s not being shown in areas where the story happened and that’s a shame,” he said. “I don’t get it.”
Gotti Jr. has been working on getting the film off the ground for nearly a decade, and the biopic starring John Travolta finally arrives at 503 theaters this weekend. But the low-budget drama could get whacked at the box office.
The long-gestating project, which was directed by “Entourage” star Kevin Connolly, is now saddled with a 0% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on six reviews from the Cannes Film Festival, where it premiered on May 15 and Travolta made headlines boogieing onstage with 50 Cent at the after-party.

Three-time Tony Award nominee Andy Karl, last seen on Broadway in Groundhog Day, has been cast as the male lead in the upcoming Pretty Woman: The Musical. He’ll play Edward Lewis (Richard Gere in the 1990 movie) opposite Samantha Barks’ Vivian (the role that made a superstar of Julia Roberts).
Karl, who won an Olivier Award for the London production of Groundhog Day and also starred in Broadway’s Saturday Night Fever, replaces Steve Kazee, who left the Pretty Woman production for family reasons, according to producers.
The new musical, which begins performances July 20 at the Nederlander Theatre, also stars Karl’s real-life wife Orfeh, a Tony nominee for Legally Blonde. Karl had seen the show in pre-Broadway workshops and the Chicago run.

John Travolta was honored with Variety’s first Cinema Icon Award at a party on Tuesday night at the Hotel du Cap in Cap d’Antibes in Southern France, following the world premiere in Cannes of his new mob biopic “Gotti.”
Arriving alongside wife and co-star Kelly Preston, daughter and “Gotti” actress Ella Bleu Travolta, director Kevin Connolly, producer Edward Walson, and members of the “Gotti” cast, Travolta said it was a “humbling moment” to be honored by Variety 40 years after his first appearance in Cannes.
The star said the reception to the new film, which will be released June 15 by MoviePass, in conjunction with Vertical Entertainment, “blew me away.”
“There’s nothing like the Cannes Film Festival” to premiere a new film, he said.

Vertical Entertainment has come aboard for U.S. theatrical distribution rights to Gotti, the pic about the famed mob boss that stars John Travolta and is directed by Kevin Connolly. The distributor will now team with Sunrider Productions to give the film a wide release June 15.
That’s the date Connolly pegged last month after its original December release date was scrapped, and the filmmakers exercised a buy-back clause with Lionsgate Premiere, which was giving the film a day-and-date VOD/theatrical release. The plan was to secure a new distributor that would do a wide release.
Sunrider’s Edward Walson who had purchased the film rights at the time, negotiated the new deal with Vertical along with Phillip Glasser.
“I have always been fascinated by the John Gotti story,” Walson said. “When I first saw the film, I knew it had a tremendous amount of potential, especially due to the terrific performance by John Travolta.

John Travolta is voicing his disappointment after Lionsgate pulled his upcoming film, Gotti, from its release. The mafia flick was pulled 10 days before it was scheduled to hit theaters, which Travolta believes was due to "fake news" and speculation that the film would sink. "Unfortunately, the reports were speculation bordering on fake news," Travolta told Deadline. "Lionsgate was planning on a minimal release, and I did an investigation into people who might have the interest and financial wherewithal to better release it." Travolta believes Gotti is worthy of a bigger release than was originally planned, and thus, he ended up seeking Edward Walson to help buy out Lionsgate for the...

Few people know Woody Allen as well as his younger sister and longtime producing partner Letty Aronson. During the past 22 years, Aronson has produced or executive produced 24 of Allen’s films, including his latest, “Café Society,” which hits theaters Friday. Set in the 1930s, the bittersweet romance stars Jessie Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart as young lovers pulled in different directions by nightclub life, Hollywood celebrity culture and New York City gangsters.
Though Allen is known for being a “final cut” filmmaker who gets the final say on every detail of his movies according to his singular vision, his process of writing and directing is much more collaborative than his reputation might lead some to believe, according to Aronson. “We can say ‘I don’t love this part of the script,’ or ‘I think these clothes look terrible,'” Aronson told IndieWire. “He’s very open to that.”

As is his wont, no plot details have shaken from Woody Allen's next picture. But, as usual, his "Irrational Man" followup will be produced by Letty Arsonson, Stephen Tenenbaum and Edward Walson. And the full cast list has dropped. Jeannie Berlin, Corey Stoll and Ken Stott now join previously announced players Parker Posey (who shines as an amorous professor in "Irrational Man"), Jesse Eisenberg, Blake Lively, Kristen Stewart and Bruce Willis. Co-stars are Anna Camp, Stephen Kunken, Sari Lennick and Paul Schneider. Casting Parker Posey again was a no-brainer. She has said she always wanted to work with the prolific director. Character actress Jeannie Berlin (of Elaine May's "The Heartbreak Kid") has never been in an Allen picture, surprisingly. Also a storied stage actress, she's fabulous in Kenneth Lonergan's film "Margaret." The film reportedly begins filming this month on location in New York and Los Angeles. Read More: The 9 Women You.

Along with Quentin Tarantino, New York filmmaker Woody Allen is responsible for reigniting the careers of many actors with his quirky, neurotic brand of dramedy. The prolific writer-director has churned out one feature a year for decades, each honing in on a particular aspect of the human condition brought to life through his talent-packed ensembles. While at times his output veers wildly from critical smash to critical flop, that hasn’t stopped him from continuing to attract a wealth of Hollywood big hitters.
Now, his stellar track record for A-listers looks to continues with his next flick, which will boast Bruce Willis, Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart as part of its starry line-up. Specific details of the movie are being kept strictly under wraps, with only producer credits being revealed. American Ultra stars Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg will be reunited later this year in another project: Woody Allen's next as yet untitled feature. Bruce Willis is the third cast member whose name has been publicly announced. The source for this information is an "exclusive" report via Deadline.com's Mike Fleming Jr. So far, as Fleming explains in his brief piece, Woody Allen and "his people" haven't confirmed the casting. In other words, things could change in the not-too-distant future. See also: Kristen Stewart Joins Kelly Reichardt Movie Project, also featuring Laura Dern and Michelle Williams. Unsurprisingly, no plot details about the upcoming Woody Allen project have been forthcoming. Allen's latest collaborators – Letty Aronson, Stephen Tenenbaum and Edward Walson – will be producing the film.
