You know John Mulaney’s six-part comedy special is gonna be really star-studded when Netflix’s PR team writes, “There will be more guests as well but we are tired of listing them. We have given you enough information already,” in their pitch email.
On Tuesday, the streaming service announced a new cohort of celebrity guests — including musical ones such as Weezer, Los Lobos, St. Vincent, Flea, and Beck — that will join Mulaney during his Everyody’s in L.A. run of live shows early next month. Also making appearances...

The People's Joker. In The People’s Joker (2022), Vera Drew makes her feverish entrance into the cluttered morass of the DC Comics cinematic multiverse by bursting through a trapdoor. Having garnered recognition as an Emmy-nominated television editor for outré comedians such as Tim Heidecker, Eric André, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Tim Robinson, Drew serves as director, co-writer, editor, lead actress, and cosmic prankster for her cinematic debut. The anarchic DIY spectacle, recently released theatrically after two years in intellectual-property limbo, mines the contradictory supervillain mythologies of the Joker to narrate Drew’s journey of self-discovery as a trans woman in the fractious world of alternative comedy. After Warner Bros. sent a cryptic letter of disapproval regarding the film’s flagrant recontextualization of the Batman franchise a day before its debut at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, it was pulled from the program. Drew and her battalion of masked vigilantes have commandeered...

"I would say 90% of our text chain with Dan Stevens is just 'I Think You Should Leave' references and memes," estimates Tyler Gillett, co-director (with Matt Bettinelli-Olpin) of the upcoming ballerina vampire movie "Abigail." And it didn't just stay in the text chain. Stevens himself says that on set, "When we weren't shooting gory scenes, we were just generally quoting 'I Think You Should Leave.'"
The obsession with the bizarre, mind-warping Netflix comedy series was so deeply ingrained that even the look for Stevens' character, Frank, was formed around a certain sketch from "I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson." Frank is tasked with overseeing a heist crew who have been hired to kidnap the daughter of a very wealthy man and hold her to ransom. He's not there to make friends, and he's not a very nice person. He is, you might say, a piece of s**t.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains minor spoilers of Tim Robinson’s “I Think You Should Leave” live show, including general descriptions of unaired sketches.
“I Think You Should Leave” went live Tuesday, April 2, when creators Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin brought their beloved Netflix sketch comedy series to the stage at New York’s Beacon Theatre.
Nearly 3,000 fans showed up for the mysterious, sold-out show, many of them revealing their allegiance to the comedy cult with Dan Flashes button-downs and Corncob TV tees — if you know, you know — and yelling out lines from “I Think You Should Leave” that have been immortalized in gifs and memes.
It was a scene inside the Upper West Side venue, as the line to buy new merchandise snaked through the foyer of the Beacon and created a traffic jam that delayed the start of the program. Among the merchandise on sale were a white...

The creative force behind the American sketch comedy series I Think You Should Leave, Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin, are getting the band back together after landing a pilot at HBO for their new project, The Chair Company. Robinson and Kanin wrote the half-hour comedy pilot, with production courtesy of Adam McKay and Todd Schulman for Hyperobject Industries.
Written and executive-produced by Robinson and Kanin, The Chair Company focuses on a man (Robinson) investigating a far-reaching conspiracy after an embarrassing workplace incident. The Chair Company arrives at HBO just as the network has sunsetted Bill Hader’s Barry and Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm in the past several months.
Robinson and Kanin met while working as writers on Saturday Night Live. They’ve collaborated on other projects, such as Comedy Central‘s Detroiters and the sketch comedy series I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson for Netflix. The...

Tim Robinson's unmistakable brand of cringe-comedy humor is setting its sights on its next victim(s), but rest assured -- we're all trying to find the guy who did this. That "guy" would probably be all of us who gleefully devoured Netflix's sketch series "I Think You Should Leave" and vaulted the comedian and former "Saturday Night Live" actor to the cream of the crop, turning the worst fictional societal monster this side of Larry David in "Curb Your Enthusiasm" into a ratings juggernaut. We have absolutely no regrets whatsoever.
In one of the wisest comedy decisions made in recent memory, HBO has now decided that it wants in on the Tim Robinson business. You'll undoubtedly want to put his latest production on your radar, titled "The Chair Company." Both Robinson and Kanin serve as writers and executive producers on the pilot, with Robinson also set to star. Adam McKay and Todd Schulman will also executive produce via Hyperobject Industries, which is under an overall deal at HBO.
The logline for the series states, “After an embarrassing incident at work, a man (Robinson) finds himself investigating a far-reaching conspiracy.”
Kanin and Robinson are frequent collaborators, beginning with their time together on the writing staff of “Saturday Night Live.” They then went on to co-create the popular Comedy Central series “Detroiters” with Sam Richardson and Joe Kelly (with Robinson and Richardson starring) and the Netflix sketch comedy series “I Think You Should Leave” (with Robinson also starring). To surprise of basically no one, Robert Downey Jr. has just won his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor as Lewis Strauss in "Oppenheimer." The movie was one of the biggest hits of 2023, both critically and financially, and Downey was a huge part of it. He brought the scheming, insecure Strauss to life on the big screen, and helped take a storyline that could've felt like a bunch of complicated legal clutter and turn it into an emotional, high-stakes battle of wills.
Downey's win is heartwarming for a whole host of reasons. One is the actor's well-known struggles with addiction in the late '90s and early 2000s, and the other is Downey Jr.'s long history of starring in exciting, varied, interesting films. From "Tropic Thunder" to "Zodiac" to his many appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this man has definitely put in the work to reach this career milestone.

Vera Drew is cementing her status as “The People’s Joker.”
The former “I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson” editor directed, co-wrote, edited, and stars in the superhero-parody film that made waves at TIFF 2022 (where IndieWire saw it) before being acquired by Los Angeles-based distributor Altered Innocence in December 2023. Now, thanks in part to social media hashtag-campaign #FreethePeoplesJoker, “The People’s Joker” is indeed free for a North-American theatrical release.
Drew portrays the title character in the queer coming-of-age origin story that reimagines “Batman” villain The Joker as a trans comedian. Joker the Harlequin (Drew) grapples with her gender identity while unsuccessfully attempting to join the ranks of Gotham City’s Ucb (United Clown Bureau) Live, the one government-sanctioned late-night sketch show that is the only platform for rising comedians since Gotham City otherwise outlawed comedy. (Get it? Ucb like Upright Citizens Brigade?)

Typically, saying you're more excited about something other than the new Lady Gaga project is fair grounds for having your queer card taken away, but an exception can be made in the case of "The People's Joker." Indeed, as intrigued as I am to watch Gaga's Harley Quinn sing and dance her way through a toxic romance with Joaquin Phoenix's Clown Prince of Crime in Todd Phillips' "Joker: Folie à Deux" (a sentence I couldn't have imagined writing after watching Phillips' original Scorsesean DC drama for the first time back in 2019), it's Vera Drew's trans-coming-of-age DC Comics superhero parody that has my current attention.
Drew, similar to her fellow trans comedienne Harper Steele (the subject of Will Ferrell's acclaimed upcoming Netflix documentary "Will & Harper"), has quietly worked on some of the more memorable and daring comedic offerings of the past decade. In addition to editing Scott Aukerman...

Tim Robinson (I Think You Should Leave), Paul Rudd (Only Murders in the Building) and Kate Mara (Class of ’09) have been set to star in Friendship, a new comedy from Fifth Season and BoulderLight Pictures.
Pic centers on Craig Waterman (Robinson), who enjoys his life. He likes New Balance shoes, Subway sandwiches, and Marvel movies. He lives in the suburbs with his wife, Tami, and son, Steven. He’s happy to work at Universal Digital, a company that helps brands make their products more habit-forming. Craig sees no reason to change anything or make new friends… until weatherman Brian moves into the neighborhood. Mysterious yet friendly, macho but vulnerable, Brian (Rudd) transforms everything for Craig, but Craig’s obsessive and childlike nature threatens to ruin the friendship, and possibly everything else in his life.
Friendship is the first feature from director Andrew DeYoung, who also penned the script and is exec producing alongside Tracy Rosenblum.

Carol Burnett’s 90 Years of Laughter and Still: A Michael J. You guys, we did it. It’s the end of the year, and if you’re reading this right now, it means you still have an appetite for television. And not just any television, mind you, but the best new TV shows on the market. After the year we’ve had, that’s an accomplishment. It means you made it through “Ahsoka” and “Secret Invasion,” “Citadel” and “The Continental.” Heck, you survived “The Idol,” — aka the greatest threat to HBO’s sterling reputation since David Zaslav — and you still want to watch Hollywood’s attempts at serialized TV. I salute you.
Try not to read too much into the fact that none of the aforementioned titles were Netflix originals. The de facto winner of the streaming wars still had a pretty rough year when it came to creating quality TV — or, to use the company’s preferred analogy, its “gourmet cheeseburgers” were pretty damn dry.
