Acclaimed Indian actor Adil Hussain will headline director Bauddhayan Mukherji’s “Marichjhapi,” one of the new projects introduced this week at the Busan International Film Festival’s Asian Project Market.
Written by Abhinandan Banerjee and Mukherji, the film will follow the real events of January 1979, where refugees on Marichjhapi island, located in the Sundarbans delta located between India and Bangladesh, wake up to find police boats surrounding their island.
Over the next three months, the refugees are tear-gassed, their huts and fisheries destroyed, women raped, houses burnt, and they are fired upon in the middle of the night. And through all of this, relationships flourish and love blossoms.
Monalisa Mukherji will produce via her and Bauddhayan Mukherji’s outfit Little Lamb Films. “Marichjhapi” is budgeted at $800,000, too big to be self-financed. “For this one I will need co-producers,” Monalisa Mukherji told Variety. “People and countries not just supporting financially, but...

Music has the power to change our life; this is the theme of Bauddhayan Mukherji’s second movie “The Violin Player”. After getting mixed reviews from viewers and critics for his debut film “Teenkahon” (The Three Obsessions), he collaborates with Ritwik Chakraborty and Adil Hussain for his Hindi feature film, and he doesn’t disappoint.
The film revolves around the life of a struggling violinist, played by Ritwik Chakraborty, who is enduring a tough time finding jobs in the music industry in Mumbai. So, he spends most of his time at his house reading newspapers and killing cockroaches, while his wife leaves for work. Even in the sessions where he gets to play at, he looks fatigued and disinterested among the other musicians, lost in the sea of struggling violinists. One such day, while returning home, a mysterious man, played by Adil Hussain, approaches him to play violin for him.

“Teenkahon” is one of the smartest and most sophisticated Bengali films of recent times. This sophistication lies in the story-telling approach which is rare in Bengali films. The three stories of love of different kinds – Nabalok, Post Mortem and Telephone, set in three different periods are brilliantly handled by the director Bauddhayan Mukherji, who paces the movie in such a timely way that it gives the feeling of a single story with three different phases of love in life where the climax reaches and unfolds in an unexpected way in the last story, which is scripted brilliantly by the director himself.
The movie deals with the difficult subject of extramarital affair which starts through the adolescence of “Nabalok” – the protagonist of the first story. The lovely visuals exploit the narration beautiful and kick start the amazing journey of Teenkahon. The second story “Post Mortem” deals with the...

Director Imtiaz Ali is known to appreciate quality cinema and recently got associated with Bauddhayan Mukherji’s Bengali film ‘Teenkahon’. Releasing 11th September in West Bengal, the film impressed the Bollywood director who decided to be its presenter, to ensure a wider reach.
Confirming the news, Imtiaz Ali said, “It’s a fascinating film. I saw Teenkahon at Mami (Mumbai Film Festival). It’s reminiscent of the great films of the ’60s from Bengal. I could relate to the characters from the three different stories, even though I am not like any of them. And the film could transport me to the Bengal of three different eras. I spoke to Bauddhayan (Mukherji, director) about it. And two days later, he asked me whether I would like to present it. I said if I can do anything to take the film to more people, it would be great.”
