Kit Zauhar’s sophomore feature “This Closeness” follows the promise of her 2021 debut “Actual People,” which demonstrated she could tell an immersive story with few resources. Her microbudget feature “This Closeness,” a Narrative Spotlight premiere of SXSW 2023, is now about to open from Factory 25 on June 7, followed by a Mubi streaming premiere on July 3. Watch the trailer, an IndieWire exclusive, below.
Per IndieWire’s 2023 SXSW preview, “This Closeness” “wields its lo-fi constraints with tremendous sophistication and insight. The entire story takes place within the constraints of a Philadelphia apartment, booked by a young couple (Zauhar and Zane Pais) for a high school reunion weekend; once there, they find themselves dealing with the awkward loner (Ian Edlund) who lives there. As tensions mount, the movie dances an elegant line between cringe-comedy and erotic thriller, with Zauhar’s character, an Asmr YouTuber, developing an enigmatic bond with their temporary roommate while...

[Editor’s note: This list was originally published in 2017. It has since been updated many times.]
With everything going the way it is in the world right now, we’re laughing to keep less cheery emotions at bay. At least this bizarre, still-very-much-in-progress century has already produced a slew of spectacular, silly, snarky, and cynical comedies: ready to fire up whenever you need a serotonin burst or distraction thanks to the ever-growing cadre of streaming services.
The pandemic may be in the rearview for the U.S. federal government, but the specter of war, a tortured economy, and human rights issues across the globe have occupied the minds of many instead. So, in desperate need of some humor, we thought it was more important than ever to give our Greatest Comedies of the 21st Century list, originally published in 2017, yet another rethink. Since the list was originally published, we’ve expanded it to 90 entries, including titles released since then that deserved including and other titles we somehow overlooked the first time.

Its ungainly final twist and unreal violence sequences dim a film with a brilliant premise and rage that still stings
Twenty-five years ago, the ultimate bro film came out; it is now rereleased for the anniversary. David Fincher’s bone-splintering, soft-tissue-pulping Fight Club is the ultraviolent hipster-fantasy about a depressed white collar nerd befriended by a supercool alpha male and inducted into a secret bare-knuckle combat cult whose purpose is to restore real masculinity. It was adapted by screenwriter Jim Uhls from the uncompromisingly pessimistic novel by Chuck Palahniuk and, after a slow commercial start, became the movie that launched a million gags about all other clubs whose first rule was that you couldn’t talk about them. It is a comic meme which survived into Emma Seligman’s recent comedy Bottoms.

Another big award show took place this weekend (in addition to the SAG Awards), the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie film and TV. One thing about this awards show is that their idea of independent sometimes makes me scratch my head a bit, with HBO’s big-budget The Last of Us nominated a whole bunch in the TV category, along with Netflix’s Beef and several other streaming shows, which I’m not sure one could call independent. For films, there’s a $30 million budget cap. For TV, I’m honestly not sure what the benchmark is because Last of Us was notoriously an expensive show to shoot, costing at least $100 million.
Indeed, The Last of Us won some key awards on the TV side, winning Best Supporting Performance (for Nick Offerman) and Best Breakthrough Performance (for Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Over on the film side, American Fiction and...

Jason Reitman and a coalition of 35 other filmmakers have together acquired one of Los Angeles’ most historic and iconic movie palaces.
The group together are the new owners and caretakers of the Village Theater in LA’s Westwood neighborhood. The 93-year-old theater, which is a block from the UCLA campus and continues to host many studio premieres weekly or monthly, is distinctive for its soaring tower, neon marquee, and massive screen. The Village Theater has been hosting premieres since the 1930s; in 2023 alone, 50 movies premiered there.
The new owners will work to preserve the theater and upgrade it to show both first-run films and repertory programming, equipping it with 35mm, 70mm, and digital projection. The group will also influence the lobby galleries, the theater’s programming, its picture and sound capabilities, and will even showcase memorabilia from their personal collections, such as props, costumes, and film prints.

Authorship is a major point of contention in queer cinema, so let’s get one thing straight: Ethan Coen’s solo directorial debut is co-written and edited by Tricia Cooke, a lesbian who is also his spouse. Yes, that’s a present tense use of “spouse.” If Cooke and Coen’s unique personal arrangement shocks you, then good luck enjoying a single frame of the married filmmakers’ wildly endearing, decidedly shaggy, and gay as fuck comedy caper. It’s steeped in mismatched genre styles and dark red blood; not to mention, it’s chockful of dildo jokes sure to put a lovable new spin on contemporary audiences’ evolving definitions of found family… member.
Cooked up more than two decades ago with the title “Drive-Away Dykes” in mind, “Drive-Away Dolls” puts an overdue spotlight on Cooke’s indelible impact on the Coen brothers’ filmography. This misadventure in girl-on-girl odd coupling was...

It’s a busy weekend for nominees and wannabes alike. A handful of Oscar darlings are newly available on streaming platforms, and a few worthwhile also-rans are out there for the taking, too.
What to watch this week: “Oppenheimer“
The Best Picture front-runner gets another boost thanks to its long-awaited streaming debut. Christopher Nolan recently nabbed the Directors Guild of America award, making his colossal biopic about the creation of the atomic bomb almost unbeatable. The movie first hit VOD in November, but “Oppenheimer” is now available on Peacock, which is owned by Universal, the movie’s distributor. Now it become death, destroyer of Oscar competition.
Other contenders:
“The Color Purple“: The newest adaptation of Alice Walker‘s Pulitzer-winning novel didn’t fare as well with the Oscars as Warner Bros. hoped it would, but Danielle Brooks still made off with a nomination for the same role that earned...

Bottoms, Emma Seligman’s high school comedy already destined to become a cult classic, has just landed on Amazon Prime Video. But a physical release remains up in the air.
Fans of Emma Seligman, Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri rejoice – last year’s brilliant high school comedy, Bottoms, has just landed on Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
Fans of physical media, though? Stop your rejoicing. Because while the film, distributed by MGM, is now available to stream for free with a Prime membership, that’s the only place you’ll find it for now unless you can track down the shady looking man who used to sell discs down the pub.

Growing up, my father used to lament that he had two daughters, not because he wanted to play catch with a miniature version of himself or some other Beaver Cleaver nonsense, but because in his words, "Women are unpredictable." As much as I'd like to reprimand my old man's archaic line of thinking, I know what he's getting at, and I'm tickled to know that this Midwestern Italian patriarch is rightfully intimidated by women. As he should be.
Generally speaking (and when approaching gender identity through a binary lens), there's a stereotype that men solve conflict through physicality. At the same time, women are often portrayed as committing acts of mental warfare that destroy a person from the inside out. Granted, I grew up in a high school environment where watching girls throw hands was weekly lunchtime entertainment, but I recognize that by and large, most people's lived experiences paint...

If there’s one takeaway from the LGBTQ narrative films that came into the world and across our screens this year, it’s the sheer variety of the stories there are to tell.
From real-world historical biopics and inspirational sports dramas, to tender love stories and raunchy comedies, there really was something for everyone this year. Captivating characters, fearless performances and narrative tapestries that defy convention and troublesome tropes all reigned supreme. As such, here are some of the best we got.

Where have all the comedies gone? Think about that and sing it to yourself to the tune of Paula Cole's "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" We used to be a proper country, inundated with the works of filmmakers like Judd Apatow, Adam McKay, and Paul Feig, starring big name talent like Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Melissa McCarthy, and Jason Segel, just to name a few of the actors who led big studio comedies that were hitting the big screen left and right. Sadly, times have changed, and it's hard to find a successor to "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," the next "Superbad" or "Bridesmaids," or even another "Forgetting Sarah Marshall."
This year alone, you'd be hard-pressed to find movies that are just straight up comedies. Sure, "Barbie" is incredibly funny, but it's not your average straight-up comedy. "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves...

Five years after "The Favourite" became a box office hit and an Oscar-winning smash, director Yorgos Lanthimos is back with another awards season hopeful in the form of "Poor Things." Featuring an A-list cast that reunited him with Emma Stone, this is the kind of project that would have seemed like a surefire winner in pre-pandemic times. But can this movie manage to turn praise from critics into actual box office dollars? That is, indeed, the big question for Disney right now, with "Poor Things" being released through the company's Searchlight Pictures banner.
"The Favourite" made a hair shy of $96 million worldwide against a budget of $15 million. It also earned a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars; Lanthimos was nominated for Best Director, and Olivia Colman won Best Actress in a legitimate surprise. It was a huge, well-rounded hit. As a result, Lanthimos was cut a much larger check for "Poor Things,...

Beyond Utopia (Madeleine Gavin)
The name Pastor Kim comes up early in Madeleine Gavin’s Beyond Utopia. A gentle, aching man, Pastor Kim tells Gavin he has ensured the escape of over 1,000 people from North Korea in the last 10 years. He’s one of the leaders of this Underground Railroad in the area, leading defectors through rivers, mountains, and forests with rods in his neck, rolled ankles, and multiple surgeries plaguing his physical health over the years. Kim becomes the doc’s lynchpin, the character who provides light to the defectors and audience. In short: he’s a hero. – Michael F. (full review)
Where to Stream: VOD
Bottoms (Emma Seligman)
It’s beginning to feel like South By Southwest is the Rachel Sennott Festival.

Fresh off the strike and newly back to work, American writer-director Dee Rees has set her sights on her next feature – a stylized dark comedy meant to visualize a central character’s frantic stream of consciousness.
“It’s a weird, experimental thing,” says Rees, who’s currently serving on the jury of this year’s Marrakech Film Festival. “[I’ve explored] comedic elements in my films, but this is the first time where it’s a kind of a dark, sad satire.”
While the “Pariah” and “Mudbound” filmmaker had toyed with this latest project for years, she picked up her pen anew once the writers strike concluded and then committed full-on following an opportune encounter in Marrakech.
“People will come to you with what they think you should do, or what they think you’d be good at,” she tells Variety. “So I try to still listen to that kind of voice. I...
