A Story Of David: The Hunted has been little seen since it made it's television broadcast debut in 1961, the year its star died. Jeff Chandler was in real life Ira Grossel, a Jewish kid from the Canarsie section of Brooklyn and very proud of his heritage. A very committed Zionist he grabbed at the opportunity to make a film in Israel. Would that it have been a better one. Even Chandler's most distinguishing feature, his prematurely gray hair was dyed black for the film.

The story of David centers in his years before he became king and involves the growing jealousy of King Saul played here by Basil Sydney. I've a feeling that Sydney might have been cast because he had played King Claudius in the Laurence Olivier production of Hamlet and the similarities are there. There are even more similarities between Saul and Shakespeare's other brooding and jealous monarch Othello. And Saul has an Iago in his court, an Edomite named Doeg played in proper serpentine fashion by Peter Arne. Arne pushes all of Sydney's buttons concerning Chandler and Sydney reacts with several acts of barbarity.

Which Chandler refuses to avenge because he's pledged in loyalty to Saul. It leads to a very confusing situation for the viewer.

The film is all biblically correct, but that master of biblical spectacle Cecil B. DeMille always used the Bible as base to start and then set his writers to work at making dramatic coherent sense of stories like Samson And Delilah and The Ten Commandments. The Bible is not a book of drama, it's a religious text.

The ending should have been what actually happened to Saul at the battle of Gilboa with Saul going the night before to the witch of Endor, breaking his own law doing so. I got the feeling that the producers ran out of money and just ended the film midway without a climax the audience was expected. Chandler just takes his army and parts from friends each going to their ordained fate. Even Doeg is not dealt with, he's one of those peripheral Bible characters and the Bible doesn't say what happened to him. He should have met Iago's fate.

The film I saw wasn't bad, all the players gave a good account of themselves, but I wanted so much more from this. Jeff Chandler must have been disappointed and Ira Grossel more so.
  • Great casting using Jeff Chandler as David and great casting overall. One of Chandler's last movies as he passed away at the young age of 42 the following year due to blood poisoning after surgery. Screen play, acting, directing all very good which makes for a very good movie.

Great entertainment but more important, fairly true depiction of Biblical record of David's life before he was made King of Israel.

Made in 1960 in the good old days of Hollywood when Biblical history, which it is and not fairly tales, was given the respect it deserves.

Highly recommended for family and church viewing. Parents and pastors alike can feel confident that though Hollywood, respect for the integrity and dignity of scripture is maintained throughout.
  • I for one am tired of people making these boring inaccurate biblical epics. This like most movies about David messes up the story. I've yet to see one David movie that gets the story right. Some would argue that you have to change some things to make it an entertaining movie, however if this is the case why isn't this movie entertaining? I think that the Bible's story of David is very interesting, but no movies get it right. This movie is at the bottom of the barrel. The story is twisted around and the movie is boring. The director seemed more concerned with trying to showcase big battle scenes (which are very unimpressive) than telling a great story. If you want to see a decent biblical epic than stay away from this. If you are trying to cure insomnia, this is the best sleeping pill I know of.
  • Below average British/American Biblical movie about two great kings and shot in Israel . A low-budget biopic about two first Israel Kings : Saul (Basil Sydney's final film , he died at the age of 73 and here he gives overacting) and David (Jeff Chandler) , including drama , love and hatred , being some moments proceeded in slow-moving . The flick focuses their epic lives , and particularly the relentless pursuit of King Saul , as the film narrates the merciless chase when King of Israel goes after David ; retelling their complicated relationship , rebellion , struggles and the intricacies in taking over the kingdom of Israel . Saul and David are very human figures who are recorded in the Bible : Samuel , Books 1 , 2 . The continued threat and domination of the invader countries : Amalacitas , Amonitas , Moabitas and Philistines forced the Jewish tribes uniting under a strong king , Saul . As prophet Samuel under divine inspiration appoints Saul as king . Later on , David claimed his rights for his marriage to Saul's daughter , Michal (Angela Browne) . King Saul is jealous of the adoration and fame of David , who vanquished Goliath and defeated Philistines . As Saul is egged on by his Edomite counselor Doeg (Peter Arne) , who is conspiring to attempt the David's killing . After that , David flees from Israel and suffering famine , enemies and himself from his many sins . But Jonathan (David Knight) , Saul's son , and David's best friend , helps him . David is reluctant to fight back against his own people , the Israelites . Shortly after , Saul and his son and heir Jonathan were vanquished by Philistines ; as Saul was murdered by a blade slashed himself . As David became king of the Jewish . David must discover his faith in God in order to save his kingdom from drought , starvation and tyranny . Along the journey of his life we see his accomplishments , his fights , betrayals and his sins . Also , how he repented and how his humility brought him to peace with his sins and his conscience . The harpist David , conquers Jerusalem and being author of the Psalms and whose heir was the infamous Salomon who built the temple of Jerusalem . David was the chosen king who loved God but also committed the acts of sin , though he , subsequently , regretted himself .

This is a Biblical story , fact-based tale about the second and ideal king of Israel , packing intense drama , family confrontations , and a strong battle of wills between Saul and David . Shot for television , in Elstree studios , but released theatrically instead , it was a flop at box office . Highlights of the movie are the bloody execution of a stubborn priest and the military parades . It contains evocative set decoration , interior filmed in UK studios , poor art direction , faded cinematography , and some scenes seem to be a little bit tiring that it makes stately pace . Furthermore , the yarn turns out to be unfinished . Duo protagonist is acceptable ; both , Basil Sidney and Jeff Chandler . The best acting is given by Jeff Chandler who provides stature to the role , delivering sincerity and bravura . Chandler was known , until his early death , for playing Indian chief Cochise , a dignified portrait well shown in : ¨Broken arrow¨ (50) by Delmer Daves , that was the first time the Red Indian was depicted as a human being rather than a brute savage merely to bite the dust at the hands of the US cavalry , as well as ¨Battle of Apache Pass¨ (1952) and ¨Taza , son of Cochise¨ (1954) by Douglas Sirk , this latter Jeff/Cochise is briefly glimpsed as a dying man at the beginning and handing over the reins of power to Rock Hudson as Taza . Although Chandler also played all kinds of genres , such as : ¨Return to Peyton Place¨(drama) , ¨Flame of Araby¨ (adventure) , ¨Merrill's marauders¨ (wartime , in his last film) , until his sad death at 42-year-old . In addition , support cast is frankly excellent , such as : Peter Arne , David Knight , the Hammer queen Barbara Shelley , Donald Pleasence , Robert Brown of James Bond , and a very young Richard O'Sullivan of Robin's nest.

Other movies concerning about these Biblic kings are the followings : ¨David and Bathsheba¨(51) by Henry King with Susan Hayward , Gregory Peck , Kieron Moore ; ¨Saul and David¨ (1964) by Marcello Baldi with Gianni Garco , Norman Wooland , Carlos Casaravilla , Aldo Sambrell , Pilar Clemens ; ¨David and Goliath¨ by Ferdinando Baldi with Orson Welles , Ivo Garrani , Ivo Payer , ¨A story of David¨ (76) by David Lowell Rich with Timothy Bottoms , Anthony Quayle , Norman Rodway , Yehuda Efroni , Jane Seymour as Bathsheba ; ¨King David¨ (1985) by Bruce Beresford with Richard Gere , Cherie Lunghi , Edward Woodward , Alice Krige and ¨David¨(1997) by Robert Markowitz with Nathaliel Parker , Jonathan Pryce , Sheryl Lee , Leonard Nimoy , Ben Daniels .

I am a seminary student and I thought the movie was biblical.

It is not intended to follow the scripture like a bible-on-VHS like the Gospel of Matthew or The Book of Acts.

But I was impressed with the way the movie deviates or adds things only to assist understanding.

I can't wait to show this movie to my child.

David is a great role-model in the way the movie presents him.

I saw this on TV late at night, and it fixated my attention.

It is shown on TBN occasionally.

I can't find it for sale, unfortunately.
  • Fragments from the story of David. Not impressive but far to be the worst version of familiar story of persecution of future king of Israel by Saul. Maybe too long, maybe too slow, maybe too naif but acceptable for fair explore of enthusiasm of youth and desire of revenge, for few, not so many, performances, for the hard try to propose a coherent story , for simple sketches and awful fight scenes.

A boy losing his family under the angry of king Saul becomes the felow of David. In some measure, exactly the option of director for Jeff Chandler as David is , for me, one of not so inspired ideas , the noble intentions, the deep honesty being better served by a David Knight , Jonathan in this film.

But, sure , only fragments from a so familiar story.
