Director and documentarian Mark Hartley scores both a film history and comedy success with this ‘wild, untold’ account of the 1980s film studio that was both revered and despised by everyone who had contact with it. The ‘cast list’ of interviewees is encyclopedic, everybody has a strong opinion, and some of them don’t need four-letter words to describe their experience!

Orange Is the New Black returns June 17. The show has rightly earned praise for its nuanced, moving portrayals of female inmates of all stripes, and serves as a reminder of how far things have come in terms of images of incarcerated women on screen. In appreciation of series creator Jenji Kohan and the cast and crew's elevated take on the subject matter, we're looking back at the bleak and often exploitative history of the strange "women's prison drama" film genre. The portrayal of women in prison can be split - as most of Hollywood can - into two periods: Pre- and Post-Code.

A couple of weeks ago we had a badass giveaway for a pair of Sho Kosugi gems from Arrow Video. This week we are continuing the trend with another opportunity to win some badass flicks from the baddest woman in town, Pam Grier. Arrow Video have kindly given us a prize pack of Sheba, Baby and Black Mama, White Mama to give away to TwitchFilm readers. I reviewed these discs upon their release and they are definitely ones to own. Here a taste of what I had to say back then: Sheba, Baby Arrow Video’s Blu-ray of Sheba, Baby is excellent, in following along with their releases for both Foxy Brown and Coffy. The image quality is surprisingly good, but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised anymore given the quality level of these discs...

Stars: Pam Grier, Margaret Markov, Sid Haig, Lynn Borden, Zaldy Zshornack, Laurie Burton, Eddie Garcia, Alona Alegre, Dindo Fernando | Written by H.R. Christian | Directed by Eddie Romero
It’s obvious with a title like Black Mama, White Mama you know the type of film you are going to be getting…. A prison women exploitation flick, its known for Pam Grier, Margaret Markov and Sid Haig and fits into the “Grindhouse” style quite well. Arrow Video have brought the film to Blu-ray in the UK and as usual provides plenty of special features; but is it worth your time?
When Lee (Grier), a tough prostitute and Karen (Markov) a revolutionary are sent to a tough women’s prison they immediately clash with a hatred of each other. When they are packed off to a maximum security prison they are chained together, but soon find themselves on the run during an ambush of their transport.

Lee (Pam Grier), a tough prostitute and Karen (Margaret Markov), a revolutionary, are admitted to a tough women’s prison where almost immediately (after some playful showering that prefigures Porky’s) they clash. You may not have seen "Black Mama, White Mama," but it's likely you've heard it. Quentin Tarantino used "Police Check Point" from the score by Harry Betts in "Kill Bill," but if you want to see the movie that first sparked the director's interest, it's now hitting Blu-ray and we've got an exclusive clip from the release. Starring Pam Grier, and with a story credit belonging to Jonathan Demme, this grindhouse take on "The Defiant Ones" follows Lee (Grier), a tough prostitute and Karen (Margaret Markov), a revolutionary, inmates at a tough women's prison where they almost immediately clash. Packed off to a maximum security facility, their transport is ambushed by Karen's guerrilla friends and the two escape into the Filipino jungle. Chained together and with differing escape plans, their clash intensifies as Lee wants to retrieve a stash of stolen cash to get her off the island and Karen...

Strangely enough, Pam Grier’s last Blaxploitation feature, 1975’s Sheba, Baby, would be the title to introduce her to a much wider audience thanks to its PG rating. Though undoubtedly adult in theme, it’s a kittenish exercise compared to the violence, gratuitous sex, and shameless taken-for-granted racist and misogynistic antics of earlier efforts. Its classification as the final chapter of Grier’s Blaxploitation days is also sort of a misnomer, since this refers to the last time she’d don her famous persona as an action star in pursuit of a more serious career, heading into Drum (a sequel to the infamous Mandingo), starring opposite Richard Pryor in Greased Lightning, and even a Ray Bradbury adaptation in Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983). But 1975 was one of several sterling years for Grier, headlining three films, though none of them would eventually reach the same iconicity as the prior year’s...

With the revelation that Ryan Murphy once had the rights to Orange Is the New Black, one can't help but wonder what that would look like: a elevision take on the blaxploitation prison film Black Mama, White Mama, or a musical version of the "Angels in Chains" episode of Charlie's Angels is more likely. But apart from how dramatically different the show would be, let's imagine which of Murphy's prized actors he'd cast in the role of Litchfield's favorite inmates. Emma Roberts as Piper Chapman Never mind the age difference; there's no way Emma Roberts wouldn't be Murphy's leading lady. She'd play a fresh-out-of-college Piper, somehow with a marriage and an arrest under her belt. She'd be bitchy and ruder than the current Piper, so really everyone would hate her. Lea Michele as Alex Vause Michele has already shown that she can be a sexy bad girl on Scream Queens,...

The drive-in/grindhouse scene has lost a true legend as Filipino filmmaker Eddie Romero, creator of some of the most infamous films to ever shine on the sliver screen, passed away yesterday at the ripe old age of 88.
The man's career spanned over 60 years, and in that time he turned out several vintage horror and exploitation flicks including The Mad Doctor of Blood Island in 1968, along with Beast of Blood and Brides of Blood. He also spent a great deal of time working with the legendary B-movie icon Roger Corman on other projects such as Black Mama, White Mama and The Twilight People.
We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to offer our sincerest of condolences to Eddie's friends, family, and constituents. God bless you, brother, and thank you for always flying that glorious freak flag which in turn has brought a huge smile to so many faces over the years.

We're sad to report that celebrated Filipino filmmaker Eddie Romero, best known among horror & exploitation fans for the “Blood Island” horror film series and his work with Roger Corman on several Philippines-based movies, passed away yesterday at 88. According to his son, Romero had been hospitalized for much of this month and lapsed into a coma shortly before his death. Romero was a highly honored filmmaker in the Philippines, and was awarded the title of National Artist for Cinema and Broadcast Arts in 2003. Over a sixty-year career, he has directed many acclaimed films in his native country, but fans of vintage horror and exploitation cinema remember him most fondly for the gory “Blood Island” series, which began with the surprise hit Mad Doctor of Blood Island in 1968, and included the sequels Beast of Blood and Brides of Blood; he's also noted for his '70s film collaborations with B-movie icon Roger Corman,...

Eddie Romero dies: Filipino filmmaker best known for his exploitation horror and action movies Eddie Romero, one of most best-known Filipino filmmakers, died of prostate cancer on Tuesday, May 28. Romero was 88. Named a National Artist of the Philippines in 2003, Romero (born on July 7, 1924, in Dumaguete City) began his film career in the late ’40s, when The Philippines were still recovering from the devastation of World War II. His international reputation rests chiefly on his low-budget horror and action movies; usually Filipino / American co-productions made in collaboration with actor-producer John Ashley. Among those are the the horror sci-fier Brides of Blood (1968), featuring veteran Kent Taylor, Beverly Powers, tropical-island natives, and radioactively mutated human-eating plants; Beast of Blood (1971), featuring John Ashley and a headless monster; The Twilight People (1972), which has no connection to either Stephenie Meyer or the Cullen Clan — in the film, reminiscent of Erle C. Kenton’s Island of Lost Souls...

Never Fear, Pam Grier Is Here! Pam Grier started her career in a number of women-in-prison films which lead to a fruitful stint of starring roles in Blaxploitation cinema. Grier created an intelligent, sensual, and tough on-screen persona with her starring roles, the likes to which few actresses are comparable. She has since gone from Blaxploitation to a forty-year career spanning film and television. She has worked with such great filmmakers as John Carpenter, Tim Burton, Jack Hill, and Quentin Tarantino – whose own film Jackie Brown is a love letter to both Grier and Blaxploitation cinema. Here is a look at the top five films of Grier’s early seventies work:
# 5 Black Mama, White Mama 1973
Written by H.R. Christian, Joe Viola, and Jonathan Demme
Directed by Eddie Romero
“A terrorist and a hooker…you two should have a lot to talk about.”
This is a women-in-prison film (Wip) aimed at a racially diverse audience.

Foxy: My Life In Three Acts, Pam Grier bio, to hit theaters
Actress Pam Grier (Foxy Brown, Coffy, The Big Bird Cage, Scream Blacula Scream, The Arena, Jackie Brown, Black Mama, White Mama) has an autobiography out. I had no idea, and I’m quite the Grier fan. Guess I’m also an idiot. The full title is Foxy: My Life In Three Acts, and it apparently deals with her life and career in quite an unvarnished fashion (the word “sensual” has been thrown around, so I’m guessing it might get a bit lurid. Not that there’s anything wrong with that). Well, the word is that the book has been optioned, and hopefully it might end up being a nice companion piece to Mario Van Peebles’ 2003 film about his filmmaker father Mario, Baadasssss!
Apparently to cover her “formative years,” the biopic (can we all just assume it will be called Foxy?...

Below you will find a list of movie that Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright has never seen. Not long ago Wright went out and asked his friends and fans to recommend some movies they thought he may have missed over the last thirty years of his life. He got recommendations from Quentin Tarantino, Daniel Waters, Bill Hader, John Landis, Guillermo Del Toro, Joe Dante, Judd Apatow, Joss Whedon, Greg Mottola, Schwartzman, Doug Benson, Rian Johnson, Larry Karaszeski, Josh Olson, Harry Knowles and hundreds of fans on this blog.
From these recommendations, Wright created a master list of recommended films that were frequently mentioned. The director now wants the fans to choose which of the films on the list he should watch on the big screen.
Wright is holding a film event at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles called Films Edgar Has Never Seen.

Edgar Wright's latest epic project [1] has him partnering with Quentin Tarantino, Judd Apatow, Joss Whedon, Bill Hader, Guillermo Del Toro, Joe Dante, Greg Mottola, Harry Knowles, Rian Johnson and, probably, several of you. Like all of us, Wright has a bunch of classic and cult films he's never seen. Unlike all of us, he has the means to see them for the first time on the big screen and will do just that in December [2] at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles during Films Edgar Has Never Seen. The director of Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World asked both his famous friends (some of which are listed above) and fans to send in their personal must see lists and, from those titles, Wright came up with one mega list from which he'll pick a few movies to watch December 9-16. After the jump check...

Quentin Tarantino has said that Pam Grier may have been cinema's first female action star, and for much of the '70s she kicked butt as iconic characters in "Coffy," "Foxy Brown," "Sheba Baby," "Friday Foster" and many other genre classics.
It was only natural that Tarantino rewrote the lead character in Elmore Leonard's "Rum Punch" for Grier in the 1997 adaptation "Jackie Brown." In Tarantino's homage to '70s blaxploitation cinema, Grier plays an airline stewardess conflicted by the demands of the law, her gun-running boss and her new love. The role fit Grier like Jackie's fine suit and introduced the actress to a whole new generation of fans.
To mark the release of "Jackie Brown" on Blu-ray, we sat down with the hard-working film goddess as she reflected on the legacy of "Jackie Brown," why she thinks blaxploitation equals empowerment, and her own survival instinct.

Since the earliest days of American cinema there has been a shadowy counterpart to the commercial mainstream: exploitation movies — pictures whose appeal lies in their sensational treatment and leering promotion of often lurid and prurient material. Pre-1960, when mainstream Hollywood worked within severe restrictions on content, exploitation movies offered audiences titillating glimpses of the deliciously taboo, usually under the guise of being some sort of instructional cautionary against the very subject matter being exploited i.e. sex in “hygiene” movies like The Road to Ruin (1934), drugs in anti-drug movies like Tell Your Children (1936, re-released in the 1960s/70s as camp classic Reefer Madness), and gambling in the anti-vice Gambling with Souls (1936).
By the 1950s, as the studios entered their long post-war decline, downscale producers launched a new vein of exploitation moviemaking, churning out low-budget thrillers (mostly sci fi and horror) aimed squarely at the burgeoning youth audience. Again, the movies were cheap,...

"I had no interest in doing another documentary after 'Not Quite Hollywood,'" says Australian director Mark Hartley. It's kind of a weird statement, since I'm talking to Hartley specifically because he made another documentary, a thoroughly entertaining chronicle of American exploitation filmmaking in the Philippines called "Machete Maidens Unleashed" ("Not Quite Hollywood" focused on exploitation films from Hartley's homeland). Packed with great interviews and movie clips, edited with panache and wit, and featuring some incredible anecdotes about Roger Corman's B-movie factory of the 1970s, New World Pictures, "Machete Maidens" certainly doesn't feel like the work of a disinterested filmmaker. So how'd we get here, chatting about his film the day after a gala screening at Fantastic Fest? I asked Hartley what changed his mind, whether he thinks there are feminist messages in Women in Prison movies, and the morality of enjoying stuntwork that could have cost someone their life.

"I know when most people go to see documentaries, they expect to learn something," said "Machete Maidens Unleashed" director Mark Hartley before the film's Fantastic Fest premiere. "If you expect to learn something, you should go outside and read a book for the next 85 minutes."
But a funny thing happened on the way to the Paramount - you do learn quite a bit about the Filipino exploitation films of the 1960s and '70s from Hartley's follow-up to his wildly entertaining history of the Australian exploitation film, "Not Quite Hollywood," even if it's not what you'd quite expect. Like that film, "Machete Maidens Unleashed" is often more fun than the films it tells the behind-the-scenes stories of since it freely uses the money shots and arrives bursting with energy to spare. At once, the film is a tribute to native Filipino directors Cirio Santiago, Bobby Suarez and Gerardo de Leon,...
