Richard Jenkins has been cast in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming series adaptation of the “Criminal” graphic novels, Variety has learned.
The series was originally ordered at Amazon back in January. Jenkins is the first confirmed cast member. The show is described as “an interlocking universe of crime stories” based on the graphic novels by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips.
Jenkins will play Ivan. The character is described as “Leo’s dad’s best friend, and has always been an uncle figure to him. He used to be a robber and criminal, but is now currently suffering from dementia. Leo is trying to care for him but realizes he’s more work than he can handle.”
Jenkins is a highly-respected actor with the rare ability to do comedy and drama in seemingly equal measure. He received Oscar nominations for his performances in the films “The Shape of Water” and “The Visitor...

If you’d have to guess, you would not probably get closer to the movie that terrified George Clooney. Of course, in our heads, Batman & Robin would pop up to be the scariest movie in his career but it was far from it.
George Clooney as Batman
Certainly, Clooney would hate to talk about his disastrous 1997 DC movie playing Batman against Arnold Schwarzenegger’s supervillain Mr. Freeze. However, the decorated Hollywood actor has opened up about the movie that sent shivers down his spine.
George Clooney Was Terrified Of One Coen Brothers Movie George Clooney in O Brother, Where Art Thou?
George Clooney and the Coen Brothers have been long-time collaborators as the actor went on to appear in five movies from the directors duo. As their go-to guy, Clooney appeared in Intolerable Cruelty, Burn After Reading, Hail, Caesar!, and Suburbicon but his appearance in the 2000 movie, O Brother, Where Art Thou?...

Searchlight Pictures gave their darkly comedic psychological thriller The Menu a theatrical release last month (you can read our review Here and watch our interview with stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult Here), and it has been more successful than I would have expected it to be. It has earned more than 59 million at the worldwide box office. And next month, it’s heading into viewers’ homes. The Menu will be receiving a digital release on January 3rd, with a Blu-ray release to follow on January 17th.
Scripted by Will Tracy (Last Week with John Oliver) and Seth Reiss (Late Night with Seth Meyers), The Menu is set
in the world of eccentric culinary culture, centering on a young couple who visit an exclusive restaurant on a remote island where an acclaimed chef has prepared a lavish tasting menu, with some shocking surprises.

Double act have some silly fun as a couple sizzling with mutual irritation who head to Bali to sabotage their daughter’s marriage
George Clooney goes into his goofy comedy routine in this feelmoderate romcom from director and co-writer Ol Parker: an intergenerational tale of Crazy Rich Americans going to a wedding. Clooney brings some serious goof: he does his goofy face and the goof is onstream more or less from the outset. This may be to the unease of those who like him in a more sophisticated low-key style, such as in Ocean’s Eleven or Up in the Air, or those who look to the Coens to rein in and shape his broader comedy tendencies, as in O Brother, Where Art Thou? or Intolerable Cruelty.

Last month, Searchlight Pictures unveiled two posters for their darkly comedic psychological thriller The Menu, which is set to reach theatres on November 18th. One of the posters focused on the character played by Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) and the other focused on the character played by Ralph Fiennes (No Time to Die). Now a new poster for The Menu has arrived online, and this one features both Taylor-Joy and Fiennes, as well as Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road) and several other cast members. You can take a look at it at the bottom of this article.

George Clooney may have won two Oscars, acted in over 80 projects, and reigned as one of the most famous actors on the planet for decades, but he still doesn’t believe he’s mastered the rom-com genre.
Clooney, who stars opposite Julia Roberts in the upcoming comedy “Ticket to Paradise,” in theaters October 21, told The New York Times that it’s been 28 years since he has acted in a rom-com film (apparently not counting “Intolerable Cruelty” in 2003).
“They sent me the script [for ‘Ticket to Paradise’], and it was clearly written for Julia and I,” Clooney said in a joint interview with co-star and fellow executive producer Roberts. “In fact, the characters’ names were originally Georgia and Julian. I hadn’t really done a romantic comedy since ‘One Fine Day’ [in 1996] — I haven’t succeeded like Julia has in that forum — but I read it and thought, ‘Well, if Jules is up for it,...

It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.
Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. If you’ll allow this geriatric millennial to deploy one truly ancient meme: “Yo dawg,...

“Mom” and “A Cinderella Story” actress Mary Pat Gleason died Tuesday after a years-long fight with cancer. She was 70 years old.
“The overwhelming love and response from the community today reminds us of just how much she was loved. She will be missed,” a representative for Gleason said in a statement to TheWrap Wednesday.
“Mary Pat Gleason, one of the dearest and sweetest people I have ever had the pleasure to know, passed away last night at age seventy,” actor Ron Fassler wrote in a post shared on Gleason’s official Facebook page Wednesday. “She has 174 credits on her IMDb page (with one unreleased film still to come), but she was so much more than a wonderful actress: she was one of a kind. So caring, so funny, and so delicious to be around, that I find it hard to imagine a world without her shining presence and smiling face.

Mary Pat Gleason, whose extensive list of film and television credits includes “A Cinderella Story” and more recently the CBS sitcom “Mom,” died of cancer on June 2. She was 70.
Gleason’s manager confirmed the news, telling Variety that “she was a fighter to the end.”
The actress began her career in 1982, with her first on-screen role being in an episode of the NBC soap opera “Texas.” Four years later, Gleason won a daytime Emmy as part of the writing team on “Guiding Light,” the long-running radio and soap opera which ran for a whopping 72 seasons across both mediums, before being canceled by CBS in 2009. Gleason also starred in the series as Jane Horgan.

Mubi's series Screwball Now & Then is showing November 21–December 21, 2019 in the United Kingdom.Preston Sturges was a writer and director who could pass muster as a percussionist; his deliciously black-hearted screwball comedies of the forties moved at a clip that would tongue-tie most screen performers today. Rhythm is integral to Sturges’ comedies and his characters move and speak so quickly they can get away with all kinds of things. In his beloved series of films of that decade—The Lady Eve (1941), The Palm Beach Story (1942), The Miracle of Morgan’s Creek and Hail the Conquering Hero (both 1944), among others—Sturges would help to perfect a very particular form of romantic comedy. That venerated form, known as screwball, reached its apotheosis in the late 1930s and early ‘40s, characterized by sharp verbal sparring, chaotic plot twists, and snappy pacing that veered from witticism to pratfalling as it pleased. In The Palm Beach Story,...

Pop music star Tommy James and film producer Barbara DeFina are developing the biopic “Me, the Mob and the Music,” based on James’ autobiography.
DeFina, whose credits include Martin Scorsese’s “Casino” and “GoodFellas,” and James have tapped three-time Tony Award winner Kathleen Marshall to helm the film adaptation from a screenplay by Matthew Stone (“Intolerable Cruelty”).
James was the leader of Tommy James and the Shondells with No. 1 singles for “Hanky Panky” and “Crimson and Clover” along with a dozen other Top 40 hits, including “I Think We’re Alone Now”, “Mirage”, “Mony Mony”, “Sweet Cherry Wine”, and “Crystal Blue Persuasion.” He has sold an estimated 100 million records.
The book, co-written with Martin Fitzpatrick and published in 2011, centers on James’ years at Roulette Records and his complex and sometimes terrifying relationship with mobster Morris Levy, also known as the “Godfather of the Music Business.” Levy operated through payola and strong-arm tactics.

Carrie Fisher is a bona fide screen legend. Obviously, she’s most famous for appearing as Leia Organa across the internationally adored multi-billion dollar Star Wars franchise, but she also lit up theaters in innumerable smaller performances (my favorite being her turn in The Blues Brothers), not to mention being a script doctor for films like Sister Act, Intolerable Cruelty, Hook and The Wedding Singer. So, why on earth hasn’t she been honored with a star on Hollywood’s iconic Walk of Fame?
This omission has been widely noted online and has now resulted in a campaign to get her the recognition she deserves. After all, if Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill both get one, it stands to reason that Fisher should as well. Plus, Donald Trump’s star (presumably awarded for his absolutely unforgettable appearance in Home Alone 2) is about to be removed because it’s been repeatedly vandalized.

When I first saw that the Coen brothers had a new Western in the works, my ears perked up like a cowboy’s at the sound of a dinner bell. Something nourishing was on the grill and it was called “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.”
It wasn’t because Joel and Ethan Coen are great balladeers of the Old West. They’d only written one previous Western, “True Grit.” But they have put their unique voice as writers to good use across a range of genres from black comedy (“Fargo”) to crime drama (their Oscar-winning “No Country for Old Men”), to period comedy, to wry romance (“Intolerable Cruelty”).
For people who appreciate the art form that is the screenplay, a coming Coen brothers movie is like the next book from a favorite author.
Yes, they have also been credited for directing most of their screenplays, but their scripts came first...

Ranking the Coen Brothers’ movies is nothing new, but using emoji to do it is. Actor Paul Rust has done just that on Twitter, and it’s a testament to both the cinematic siblings’ singular body of work and Rust’s emoji-choosing abilities that it’s surprisingly easy to decipher his choices. When #1 is signified by a pregnant woman and a female cop, for instance, it’s clear he’s chosen “Fargo” as his top choice; a bowling ball and pins can only mean that “The Big Lebowski” has come in at #5.

The one-hour series, which has received a 10-episode straight-to-series-order, is described as a dark comedy set in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It revolves around Vicki Ellis (Zeta-Jones), the most renowned and ruthless pageant coach in the state, and the hapless Samantha Stone, who hopes Vicki can mold her into worthwhile contender for the title of Miss America. But when she gets paired with the beautiful but unpolished Samantha, Vicki’s entire reputation might be at stake.

Smile because it’s that time again – the time to go to the theater and (hopefully) have a good time. Let me ask you – do you have any plans for March 9 this year? In any case scenario, you might want to consider checking out the promising new action-comedy ‘Gringo’, courtesy of Amazon. In fact, this will be the first mixture of action and comedy that we are about to witness on the big screen this year.
During the last twelve months, we were lucky enough to see a decent number of good (and not so good) movies in quite possibly the most lucrative genre in Hollywood. We laughed at some funny actioners such as ‘Baby Driver’, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2’, ‘Baywatch’, ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’, and more recently – the hilarious ‘Jumanji: Welcome to The Jungle’. So let’s see what to expect from ‘Gringo’ which opens up on March 9 in the USA.

This scattershot satire of the dark underbelly of 1950s suburbia feels like a movie the Coen brothers forgot to make. It is their script, which means the laughs still have bite. And the director is George Clooney, who's previously worked as an actor with the Coens, sometimes smashingly (O Brother Where Are Thou, Burn After Reading), sometimes not (Intolerable Cruelty). But the star, staying behind the camera here, lacks the instinct to go for the jugular the way the material demands. Clooney and his producing partner Grant Heslov updated the...

Goodbye Christopher Robin is directed by Simon Curtis (My Week with Marilyn, Woman in Gold) and will be released in Us theaters by Fox Searchlight Pictures on October 13, 2017.
Carter Burwell said about the score:
“One of the riskier decisions Simon Curtis and I made with the score was to withhold the main theme until the middle of the film, when A. A. Their affinity for the western being evident enough by now, it was only a matter of time before Joel and Ethan Coen returned to that territory they’ve covered so well — rather clearly, at least, in True Grit and No Country for Old Men, and somewhat more abstractly in the likes of Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, and perhaps another picture or two. (Who wants to write the piece that argues for Intolerable Cruelty‘s place within the genre?) But not quite this way: per Variety, the young and ambitious Annapurna Television (Megan Ellison yet again) are partnering with American cinema’s best-respected brother-brother duo for a western miniseries entitled The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.
Particulars, as you might have guessed, are non-existent, leaving us with general notices: the project will “intertwine six different story lines,” thus explaining why its scope “seemed too challenging to be covered in one feature film.

In their seventeen feature-length films over the last three-plus decades, there are perhaps no more consistent, distinctive American filmmakers working today than Joel and Ethan Coen. After finishing up similarly comprehensive series on David Fincher, Stanley Kubrick, and Paul Thomas Anderson, Cameron Beyl has returned with another multi-part documentary, this time dedicated to the work of the Coen brothers.
“They no doubt would be quick to dismiss this very video series as a frivolous waste of time — an ill-advised attempt to define a filmography that actively defies interpretation,” begins Beyl. Indeed, much of the fascination with the Coens has to do with the seemingly effortless way they are able to layer their films; virtually all of them able to work as a piece of entertainment on first viewing, only to reveal themselves as much deeper on many deserved repeating watches.

Will Smith ends the year with a real stinker. Here's our look at Collateral Beauty...
“What is the why?”, asks Will Smith's high-flying advertising executive Howard at the start of Collateral Beauty, a kind of modernised spin on the supernatural redemption story of A Christmas Carol. The dialogue is not great, but you do find yourself asking 'why?' a lot during the film that follows. Sadly, it's not something that anyone involved in making the film seems able to answer.
The film opens with this character establishing moment before skipping forward three years in time to find Howard considerably more withdrawn from the world. His six-year-old daughter has tragically passed away and his company is suffering as a result of his days spent building elaborate domino set-ups in his office instead of engaging with clients.

George Clooney and the Coen brothers look to have wrapped up their unofficial American Idiot trilogy with the release of Burn After Reading in 2008, but low and behold, when Joel and Ethan Coen came knocking seven years later, Clooney answered the call to headline Hail, Caesar! as dim-witted Hollywood superstar, Baird Whitlock.

There were many conversations surrounding Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, most of them bad, and among the more interesting concerned its star, Ellar Coltrane — one of the “what now?” variety. (This interested me so much, in fact, that I asked him about it during an interview in the summer of 2014.) It didn’t take long to get an answer: in September of last year, he signed for James Ponsoldt’s The Circle, putting him in a co-starring position with Tom Hanks, Emma Watson, and John Boyega. And now there’s an update from Variety: the actor’s joined Barry, an Obama biopic-of-sorts concerning the future President’s time at Columbia University in 1981.

Directors’ trademarks is a series of articles that examines the “signatures” that filmmakers leave behind in their work. This month, with the release of Hail, Caesar!, we’re examining the trademark style and calling signs of Joel and Ethan Coen as director.
Joel and Ethan Coen, known collectively as the Coen brothers, are a filmmaking duo who have been active making feature films since the 1980’s. Together they share many production-related roles on their films, including writing, directing, editing, and producing. Although they are typically both equal contributors in many of these roles, they often trade off as lead billing. For editor, they typically use the pseudonym “Roderick Jaynes”, and for director Joel was listed on all films up until The Ladykillers even though both of them shared directing responsibilities. On later films, they are both listed as director.
Their first feature film was Blood Simple (1984) which was not a...

It's President's Day weekend, and last year it was the R-rated Fifty Shades of Grey dominating all things box office with a record-smashing $85.1 million opening that bumped up to $93 million for the four-day. This weekend brings a different kind of R-rated heat to the box office in the form of the superhero feature Deadpool, which won't likely top Fifty Shades' record, but that doesn't mean it isn't looking to perform in a big way. Additional new releases include the romantic comedy How to be Single and the fifteen-years later sequel, Zoolander 2, both of which will battle for a distant second. Arriving in a big way this weekend, Fox's Deadpool will hit 3,558 theaters with its sights set on settling among the top ranks of R-rated comic book adaptation opening weekends. The list is currently topped by 2007's 300 with $70.8 million, followed by 2009's Watchmen with $55.2 million. The film is looking at...

Acclaimed follow-up to Inside Llewyn Davis takes just $11.4m on opening – the Coen brothers’ lowest ever debut for a film on wide release
Its cast includes George Clooney, Josh Brolin, Ralph Fiennes, Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Frances McDormand and Tilda Swinton. Critics have called it a brilliant paean to Hollywood’s golden age. But the Coen brothers’ new period comedy, Hail, Caesar!, has bombed at the Us box office, with the lowest opening haul of any major release in the Oscar-winning duo’s career.
Up against the continuing might of animated sequel Kung Fu Panda 3, as well as fellow debutants including romantic drama The Choice and horror-comedy Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, the 50s-set tale of a major film star gone missing scored just $11.4m (£7.9m) to open in second place. The Coen brothers’ previous lowest bow for a film in wide release – usually estimated at around 2,000 cinemas – was...

This weekend, a new movie from the Coen Brothers, another Nicholas Sparks adaptation, and a high concept zombie movie all arrived but none of them could knock out an animated panda from the top spot at the box office. "Kung Fu Panda 3" stayed at the top of the box office for the second straight week, with 20th Century Fox's sequel adding $21 million to the balance sheet, keeping it ahead of the competition which didn't have much of a fighting chance. The film coming in with arguably the biggest push behind it was the Coens' "Hail, Caesar!" and yet, despite a huge ensemble of A-list talent, the picture only earned $11.4 million. The directors have only had six films in their career open in wide release, but this ranks near the bottom with 2003's "Intolerable Cruelty" besting it. With a $22 million price-tag, the film will likely wind up perhaps turning a small profit,...

As we began talking about editorial content we could publish to celebrate the release of Hail, Caesar!, the latest film from Joel and Ethan Coen, we realized that none of us had the same top five lists, and that it seems unusual for that to be the case. The Coens have had such a rich and varied career that it is impossible to pin them down to one style or one theme or one type of storytelling. Some people love their comedies. Some people love it when they get dark. Some people love the underdogs, the least-liked of their films. But what's clear is that every film they've made has its fans, and even their worst films are beloved by someone. There are few artists like the Coen Brothers, and we were delighted to get lists from each of our special guest contributors this time. The diversity of the replies...

With Hail, Caesar! arriving in theaters this week the Internet (at least the section that talks about movies) will be alight with bits and bobs concerning the films of Joel and Ethan Coen. We’ll avoid stoking any flames with something such as a “definitive” ranking — such is the nature of their oeuvre that numerous people will tell you Intolerable Cruelty is one of their best and Fargo deserves a spot near the bottom, or literally any number of possible combinations — and instead share a number of materials relating to the new film (of which we’re great admirers), the older titles, and the Coen brothers in general.
First up, the brothers have told Variety that they aren’t planning any sequel to The Big Lebowski, but could see a Barton Fink follow-up. “We’re going to do a Barton Fink sequel at some point,” Ethan says, noting they haven’t written it yet.
