When it was released in January of 2001, Richard Kelly's bleak time-travel psychological drama "Donnie Darko" caused a notable stir. The title character, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, is a teen struggling with schizophrenia in 1988, a time when Reagan's great Conservative revolution was drawing to a close and adults clung to suburban conformity as it crumbled under them. Donnie is obsessed with time-travel and regularly hallucinates a vicious, strange anthropomorphic rabbit monster named Frank (all while attempting to socialize at school and foster a romance with a classmate played by Jena Malone). Patrick Swayze appears as a cheesy self-self guru, Drew Barrymore plays one of Donnie's teachers, and Maggie Gyllenhaal plays Donnie's sister.
By turns psychedelic and weirdly moving (in a Goth sort of way), "Donnie Darko" quickly became a cult hit and rotated directly into the local midnight movie circuit, attracting a wide swath of misfits and night people.

Joe Flaherty, a writer and performer on the influential and beloved sketch comedy series Sctv and a series regular on Freaks and Geeks, died Monday following a brief illness. He was 82.
His death was announced by his daughter Gudrun Flaherty, who said in a press statement, “After a brief illness, he left us yesterday, and since then, I’ve been struggling to come to terms with this immense loss. Dad was an extraordinary man, known for his boundless heart and an unwavering passion for movies from the ’40s and ’50s. His insights into the golden age of cinema didn’t just shape his professional life; they were also a source of endless fascination for me. In these last few months, as he faced his health challenges, we had the precious opportunity to watch many of those classic movies together — moments I will forever hold dear.”

Exclusive: Academy Award winner Jim Rash (Bros) has signed on to star alongside Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum in Project Artemis — the high-profile Apple Original, to be directed by Greg Berlanti.
Specifics as to the film’s plot have thus far been kept under wraps, though we hear that it will be set against the space race of the 1960s.
While unconfirmed, sources say that Rash will play Lance, a fashionable, chic commercial director. Flamboyant and determined to create art, Lance is known for constantly going over budget on set, being incredibly opinionated and is perpetually un-hirable.
Apple acquired the hot package for upwards of 100M when it hit the market this past spring, as we told you first. Jason Bateman had at that point been set as director, with Johansson’s Avengers co-star Chris Evans tapped for Tatum’s role, though both have since departed — Bateman, due to creative differences,...

In the 1990s, a group of young, creative filmmakers supplied audiences with a fresh style of filmmaking. While Quentin Tarantino's violent and gory "Reservoir Dogs" helped usher in the indie movement of the '90s, a large portion of the decade's indie films were introspective, conversational films centered around relatable characters and slices of life stories, including Richard Linklater's movies.
The young filmmaker gained mainstream attention with the release of his 1991 super-indie film "Slackers." The movie refuses to choose a protagonist or plot and instead bounces around, offering audiences a smorgasbord of what the streets of Austin, Texas, have to offer. Conspiracy theorists, arguing couples, street musicians, and a handful of other characters momentarily fill the screen before the camera loses interest and focuses on someone else. Linklater's earliest films reveal his fascination with ordinary people and how their lives interact with others.

Chhalaang (on Amazon Prime); Cast: Rajkummar Rao, Nushrat Bharucha, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Saurabh Shukla, Ila Arun, Satish Kaushik; Direction: Hansal Mehta; Rating: * * * (three stars)
By Vinayak Chakravorty
Sports films can no longer be just about sporting themes and students coming of age, we have crossed that generic phase a while back. So Hansal Mehta, in the most mainstream film he has made in a while, throws in a love triangle and a whole lot of goofy humour into the narrative of his new film. The story is set in heartland Haryana, and that gives him a passable scope to talk patriarchy without getting too heavy about it.
Mehta's new film is far from the class of Aligarh, Shahid or his recent web series Scam 1992 -- directorial efforts that draw automatic recall when you think of the filmmaker. That's not to say Chhalaang lacks quality. It's just that Mehta has made an easier film this time,...

ReviewDirected by Hansal Mehta, the 10-part web series now streaming on Sony Liv stars Pratik Gandhi, a relatively unknown Gujarati actor, as Harshad Mehta.Saraswati DatarScreenshot: Sony LivIt wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Harshad Mehta’s story is one of a man who indulged an addiction and then fell prey to it. It proves that perhaps the greatest addiction of all, more dangerous than drugs or alcohol, is the addiction to wealth. As Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story, now streaming on Sony Liv, tells us, you can never have enough money or the materialism it facilitates. Yet unlike any other addiction, this compulsive need to make money can create much larger ramifications on a nation where poverty and disparity keep birthing a restless child, ambition. Ambition, aspiration, greed – call it what you will, but when Harshad Shantilal Mehta (Pratik Gandhi), who shares a one-bedroom home with four family members,...

After a series of hit shows that streamed on their platform, Sony Liv is now gearing up for their next big one, Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story. Expected to arrive in early October, the web series is special since it is based on the true story of stock broker Harshad Mehta, who had made headlines back in 1992 when the big stock market scam ranging in thousands of crores was unveiled.
There was good intrigue created around mid-August itself when the teaser of the web series was revealed. With director Hansal Mehta at the helm of affairs, one was rest assured that there would be quite some content coupled with style that would be the hallmark of Scam 1992. Moreover, to bring in good realism in this fact meets fiction tale, Gujarati actor Pratik Gandhi is the chosen one to enact the part of Harshad Mehta.

Last week, I got to interview Devon Sawa about his role in the film Escape Plan: The Extractors. We delved into the role and his experiences, his upcoming films, and I got to gush a bit about my childhood crush on him. It was a great time. Check out the interview below:
Jessica Fisher: Hi, I’m Jessica Fisher from GeekTyrant, and I just have to say that twelve year old me is beside herself right now. I’m a big fan from way back., especially Now and Then.
Devon Sawa: Thank you so much. And you know what? That’s exactly how twelve year old me felt filming this movie with Sylvester Stallone. Not that I’m anything like Stallone. What I’m trying to say is thank you.
Jf: Of course! Do you still get a lot of women approach you who were young fans of yours.

Charlie Lyne's documentary Beyond Clueless harks back to the classic teen movies that shaped the '90s.
Featuring narration from The Craft's Fairuza Balk (and with clips of Robin Tunney, Devon Sawa and co), it made us feel a sudden pang of nostalgia and sent us on our own trip down memory lane to find out where they - and the rest of the '90s teen movie crew - are now.
So, here are 11 stars from some of our favourite '90s teen movies, and what they've gone on to do since:
1. Devon Sawa - Idle Hands (1999)
Dreamy Devon Sawa starred as lazy stoner Anton Tobias - who turns mass murderer after his hand becomes possessed - in the horror comedy Idle Hands.
He went on to play teenage prophet of doom Alex Browning in Final Destination (2000), and appeared as similarly unstable Stan in Eminem's controversial music...

As I compiled this list of musical scenes written or improvised by the actors who performed them, I quickly realized that I could never cover everything. The amount of music written by the actors in Christopher Guest films alone would more than double the size of this article. So I tried to limit myself to scenes and movies that I'd be able to give some fun insight on.
I literally got goosebumps rewatching some of these musical scenes. I hope you're inspired to give some of these movies a whirl in the DVD/Blu-ray player afterwards with a new sense of appreciation for the work that went into these musical moments.

It’s time to shed a light on A Resurrection, a suspense horror thriller from first-time writer/director Matt Orlando, coming to theaters and VOD on March 22nd. The film, from Jamie Kennedy Entertainment, stars Mischa Barton (The O.C.), Devon Sawa (Final Destination, Slackers, Idle Hands), Jonathan Michael Trautman, and (pour a sip…) Michael Clarke Duncan in his last film.
The synopsis is simple: “A down to earth school psychologist tries to help a mentally ill student who actually believes his brother is coming back from the grave for revenge on the students who killed him.”
The film introduces a new player in the horror genre, has a good cast playing against type, and plays with audience expectations from the get go. A review and an interview with the director are forthcoming, but, in the meantime, check out the trailer for A Resurrection.

Devon Sawa has been elevated to a series regular on The CW’s Nikita. Sawa (Final Destination, Slackers and Idle Hands) had been recurring as Owen Elliot, a former Division “cleaner” on the show which is headed into its third season. In a similar fashion to Nikita (Maggie Q), Owen became attached and eventually fell in love with a civilian, Emily (Bianca Lawson) who was killed. Owen also killed Nikita’s fiancé, Daniel Monroe (Sebastien Roberts). Sawa’s casting follows recent feature roles in The Philly Kid with Wes Chatham and Neal McDonough and 388 Arletta Avenue opposite Nick Stahl. Sawa is repped by Gersh and Klwgn Entertainment.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (Warner Bros.) An eleven year-old boy (newcomer Thomas Horn, in an incredible debut) discovers a mysterious key amongst the possessions of his late father (Tom Hanks) who perished in 9/11. Determined to find the lock it matches, the boy embarks on a Picaresque odyssey across New York City. Director Stephen Daldry and screenwriter Eric Roth have fashioned a film both grand and intimate, beautifully-adapted from Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel, thought by most who read it to be unfilmable. Fine support from Jeffrey Wright, Sandra Bullock, John Goodman, Viola Davis and the great Max von Sydow. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.
Battle Royale: The Complete Collection (Anchor Bay) Adapted from Koushun Takami’s polarizing novel (compared by champions and detractors alike as a 21st century version of A Clockwork Orange) and set in a futuristic Japan,...

Exclusive: There’s more movement on the Summit Entertainment and Lionsgate film front now that the two companies have become one. I’ve just learned that Summit Entertainment’s President of Worldwide Production and Acquisitions Erik Feig will be named President Of Production of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. Feig has worked at Summit for the past 11 years. Then 2 years ago Walt Disney Studios boss Rich Ross tried to woo the billions-dollar-franchise Twilight Saga guru away from Summit. But Feig stayed loyal and, besides, he was still under contract and has been a partner at Summit since 2007. As for Lionsgate’s Joe Drake and Alli Sheamur, their positions remain the same for now although I hear that Sheamur is talking to Lionsgate about her future role at the company. “She’ll continue to focus on the movies shes working on,” an insider tells me, “and they’re trying very hard to keep her there.

Outside of seeing three films in theaters this week I also took in nine titles at home including films from Akira Kurosawa, Roman Polanski, Claude Lelouch and two from Chan-wook Park. Now, here's the recap of my week in movies... The Machine Girl (2008) Quick Thoughts: I can't remember which one of the Netflix friends I have had this in their queue, but I saw it and noticed it was on Instant Play and just had to give it a watch. I mean, at 96 minutes who wouldn't want to give a movie about a girl with a machine gun on her arm a chance? Well, I gave it a chance and must say,...

James King's Hilarious Sex Scenes
Stunning Pearl Harbor star James King had to hold back the giggles while romping with co-stars in her recent box office bomb Slackers. The model-turned-actress, 22, finds it hilarious to act out sex scenes in the movie, which co-stars Devon Sawa and Jason Schwartzman. The blonde beauty says, "There are about a hundred people sitting there watching you and you're having sex with this guy and he's wearing a thong. You're trying not to laugh your ass off. You're licking his face and he's licking yours, and it's so gross and so nasty, but it's funny too. It's so outrageous, especially when you think 'This is my life; I'm getting paid to have sex with a guy in a thong!'"...
