Neil Young is an artist forever looking in two directions. He's currently focused on the future with his new band Promise of the Real, and also surveying his legacy as musician and filmmaker. It was the latter that brought Young to the Regal Theater in downtown Los Angeles for Monday's screening of Human Highway and Rust Never Sleeps, digitally restored and set for first-time DVD release.

A Neil Young and Crazy Horse concert is not for everybody, but Wednesday’s blowout at the Hollywood Bowl was high-grade catnip for the converted. Put quite simply, if this music didn’t move you, you might want to get your pulse checked. On a warm, windless night, Young and his 43-year on-again/off-again compatriots played their first local gig since the well-intentioned but often wince-worthy Greendale tour of 2003-04. And the show recalled their late-’70s and early-’90s peaks, with gloriously fuzzy and extended songs that put the “jam” back in jam band. And

Walk with him: Neil Young makes Canada shake in Demme’s concert film
On R.E.M.’s farewell masterpiece ‘Collapse Into Now,’ Michael Stipe channels the deep need of human beings to make sense of their lives through the music they listen to when he petitions, “please ask Neil, I need to pow-wow now.” The great Jonathan Demme (‘Something Wild,’ ‘Philadelphia,’ and the often misconstrued ‘Rachel Getting Married’) does his part in fulfilling this request in ‘Neil Young Journeys,’ a live concert doc featuring Young’s electrifying, electrified 2011 solo performance at Toronto’s Massey Hall, coming a full 40 years after ‘Live at Massey Hall,’ a quiet acoustic show from Young’s early folk period, was recorded.
On stage, Neil’s guitar growls and groans, quakes the tectonic plates, and imperils the planet’s orbit. Interspersed with the brilliantly sound-mixed concert footage, Demme unobtrusively inserts casual scenes of Young revisiting his hometown (yes,...

Neil Young has teamed up with Crazy Horse for a new album. The collaborative project - titled Americana - will be released on June 5 and will contain 11 new versions of classic American folk songs. It was recorded at the Audio Casa Blanca studios in January and is the first album from the collaborators since 2003's Greendale. Speaking about his choice of songs to cover for the album, Young said: "They represent an America that may no longer exist. "The emotions and scenarios behind these songs still resonate with what's going on in the country today with equal, if not greater impact nearly 200 years later." He continued: "The lyrics reflect the same concerns and are still remarkably meaningful to a society going through economic and cultural upheaval, especially during an election year. "They (more)...

Chicago – Russ Tamblyn has seen it all. In a show business career that is now over 60 years old, he has gone from child star (”Father of the Bride”) to Oscar nominee (”Peyton Place”) to classic role (”West Side Story”) and cult hero (”Twin Peaks”). With a span like that, he has collected a few stories.
Tamblyn made an appearance in Chicago in 2010 at the Hollywood Palms in Naperville, Illinois, and did an interview with HollywoodChicago.com regarding the 50th Anniversary of the film “West Side Story.” After talking about that experience, he began to reminisce about his other career exploits. In a talk that lasted close to an hour, he spoke about the transition from child to adult star, encounters with Elvis Presley and adventures with rocker Neil Young, director David Lynch and actor Glenn Ford.

Neil Young is reuniting with his famed backing band Crazy Horse for what we hope will be the first in a number of new live dates. The group will take part in the Grammy Foundation’s MusiCares Person of the Year Gala in honor of Paul McCartney in L.A. later this month. Young hasn't toured with Crazy Horse since the "Greendale" jaunt in 2004, so keep your fingers crossed for the news of a full-blown tour as opposed to a one-off L.A. date. Together, Young and Crazy Horse have released a number of legendary speaker-shredding guitar rock records, including "After the Gold...

Neil Young has reportedly recorded a brand new album with long-time collaborators Crazy Horse. The 'Old Man' singer revealed that the group have recorded their first new LP since 2003's Greendale, and that they are already working on a further collection, reports Young fansite Thrasher's Wheat. Young is said to have told the news to a group assembled at a master class at the Slamdance Festival where he spoke with director Jonathan Demme about their joint project Journeys. Neil Young has released a host of albums with Crazy Horse from 1969 including (more)...

On the heels of their announcement to reboot the universe, DC Comics announced the first batch of creative teams and books that will be a part of the latest DC mulligan Thursday afternoon. Also unveiled is their price structure for their day-and-date digital comics.
Basically both print and digital will be the same initial price for the first four weeks of release. $2.99 for the average comic, and $3.99 for oversized issues like Justice League #1. Then after four weeks, the digital version will drop down $1 to either $2.99 or $1.99 based on the page count. If some special cases, like Justice League #1, a consumer can buy both at an escalated price of $4.99 for a combo pack that will be polybagged with a code to download the comic. In other words, if you’re looking to go with digital comics as a cost-cutting method, expect to be behind on all of your comics by at least one month.

Neil Young’s bulletproof status as the other ’60s rock icon you can still depend on—take a bow, Bob Dylan—has become increasingly reliant on albums boasting catchier concepts than songwriting. It’s easy to praise Young for getting fired up about the environment (Greendale), the war in Iraq (Living With War), and electric cars (Fork In The Road), but when it comes to songs, he’s been penning iffy lyrics and recycling the same by-the-numbers guitar-rumble for years. Young’s cultural engagement makes him impervious to charges of coasting, but with Le Noise, he’s once again made ...

I approach The Promise: The Making of the Darkness on the Edge of Town with the preconception no documentary can capture the passion and brilliance of Bruce Springsteen lyrics – delivered with his iconic, gritty, working class voice. Springsteen is a storyteller, an ethnographer of the working class capturing something I fail to put into words – and luckily this documentary has helped me understand why I respond so deeply to The Darkness on the Edge of Town: Springsteen composed and assembled his albums with an emotional rawness that adds an immediacy that makes his music still fresh. He has continued to inspire, spewing a Jersey Shore sound that is carried forth today by such artists as Pete Yorn and The Gaslight Anthem. In the interest of full disclosure I’m from New Jersey.

According to Us transmedia expert Jeff Gomez, Australians are more ready to embrace ethnic and culturally diverse projects than many Americans, but the media must first eradicate the sense of “otherness” they attribute to certain groups.
“The properties that we choose to work with tend to have international casts and universal themes, but it seems to my highly untrained eye that the Australian media’s default is to seal ethnics and natives in an envelope of otherness,” Gomez told Encore.
Gomez is the CEO of Starlight Runner Entertainment, an animation and live-action film company. He’s transformed intellectual properties (Pirates of the Caribbean, Prince of Persia, Tron, Halo, Avatar, Transformers, Hot Wheels, etc) into successful transmedia franchises, extending toys, animation or videogame titles across multiple platforms, evolving them into narratives and therefore, multiple revenue streams.

Yesterday we got a look at the San Diego Comic-Con 2010 schedule for Wednesday and Thursday of the show, and today the Friday schedule has landed online.
You can read the whole Friday lineup at the Comic-Con website, but heed this warning: It's intimidating, to say the least.
I've sifted through it to find some of the events you might be particularly interested from the worlds of comics, movies, television, games, and anything else that seemed appropriately awesome. Feel free to chime in via the comment section with the panels, events, and other fun stuff you want to check out Friday.
We're big fans of "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" animated series here at Splash Page HQ, and the added bonus of a "Young Justice" premiere has this one underlined on our Comic-Con schedule:
10:30-11:30 Batman: The Brave and the Bold Screening and Q&A— The Caped Crusader...

Neil Young has spent the better part of five decades becoming a living legend in the world of music and during all of that time he's never been a stranger to shining a light on political causes and exploring new mediums. He's directed films, put on benefits like Farm Aid, and established non-profit organizations. Next week, with the help of DC Comics, he will broach the world of comic books with the new release Greendale. Vertigo, the more literary imprint of DC Comics, tapped Joshua Dysart to work with Young to adapt the story. Dysart is an old hand at mixing the entertaining memes of comics with the conceits of political undertones that leave you feeling good about the book and not as though you've been preached to. He was the mastermind responsible for Vertigo's relaunch of...

This week's Comic Pull List is packed with several excellent graphic novel and comic selections from Dark Horse Comics, DC, Idw Publishing, Marvel, and Vertigo Comics. Idw Publishing releases the 30 Days of Night graphic novel, while Dark Horse brings fans Hellboy Volume 10: The Crooked Man and Others and the Blacksad graphic novels. Over at Marvel, we've got the new release of Rawhide #1. The Rawhide Kid is back, and this time he's got a posse! The Daredevil series continues to delight, and issue #507 concludes the "Left Hand Path" story arc. Over at DC Comics, we're all about Batman #700 and Grant Morrison. One of the best (and often most confusing) DC writers is back where he belongs for this milestone issue. Gail Simone continues her exciting run on Secret Six with issue #22 and the conclusion of the "Cat in the Cradle" story. Vertigo Comics releases Neil Young's Greendale. ...

DC Comics subsidiary Vertigo has revealed details of its upcoming graphic novel Greendale. According to editor Karen Berger, the book was inspired by the 2003 Neil Young album of the same name. It centres on a character named The Man in the Red, based on the singer himself. If you were guessing the locale of a leading regional American theater known for championing new, experimental work, you might first suggest San Francisco, Minneapolis, or Seattle. If someone prompted, "Think Texas," your mind would likely leap to Austin. Unless you were in the know about such things, you wouldn't name the Undermain Theatre, in Dallas."The Undermain is an unsung American treasure, and more people should know about it," says Len Jenkin, the Obie Award–winning, New York–based playwright whose "Port Twilight, or A History of Science" is currently enjoying its world premiere on the Undermain stage. "The Undermain is able to do a really extraordinary thing," Jenkin notes, "in that in a much more conservative town than some others in the United States, they're able to do the most adventurous kind of theater work, to do it really well, to do it imaginatively, and to keep doing it.

Although details are still under wraps, singer/songwriter Neil Young will be the subject of a concert film to be taped in August at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry, Billboard.com has learned. The as-yet-untitled project will be directed by Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia). As previously reported, Young has been recording a new album in Nashville with such collaborators as keyboardist Spooner Oldham, pedal steel guitarist Ben Keith and drummer Carl Himmel. A release date for the set is unconfirmed. The album is the follow-up to Young's 2003 effort Greendale, which was augmented by a feature-length film bringing to life the characters in the songs. As for Demme, he previously dabbled in the concert movie medium with the 1984 Talking Heads project Stop Making Sense, which spawned a hit accompanying album.
