It's been 26 years since John Singleton shook up Hollywood with Boyz n the Hood, his feature film debut and a semi-autobiographical story about a Crenshaw teenager trying to live an ordinary life during the height of the Crips/Bloods gang war. Now, the first African-American ever nominated for a Best Director Oscar revisits the crime-ridden Los Angeles he once observed first-hand – and offers a larger, much-needed historical context that helped shape those mean streets.
Singleton's new FX show Snowfall (which debuts on July 5th) follows Franklin Saint (Damson Idris), an ambitious L.

Ten years is a lifetime in the film industry.
To put that into perspective, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was viewed as little more than wishful thinking back in 2007, when Jon Favreau and the Powers That Be quietly began plotting an Iron Man post-credits scene involving a certain Nick Fury. Twelve months later, Favreau’s standalone pic launched Robert Downey Jr.’s career into the stratosphere and the rest is history. But 2008 also witnessed the release of a lesser-known horror pic. Its name? The Strangers.
Headed up by Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, the home invasion thriller became something of a cult hit nine years ago and now, after enduring a prolonged spell in pre-production, The Strangers 2 is officially on the cards. It’s found its leading trio, too, now that former Mad Men star Christina Hendricks, Bailee Madison, and Lewis Pullman have all climbed aboard to anchor the horror sequel.

A nightstand harbors a real-life nightmare in a new clip from The Bye Bye Man, and Stx Entertainment is giving horror fans in select cities the chance to get their own Bye Bye Man nightstand on Craigslist... and potentially see the film in Los Angeles with the makers of the movie.
"The clip reveals a way in which ten (un)lucky people will have the chance to invite The Bye Bye Man into their life…
In the film, a group of college students move into an old house and bring the furniture out of the basement, including a nightstand which Elliot (Douglas Smith) places next to his bed. The inside drawer has "don't say it, don't think it" scrawled all over the liner paper, hiding the carved words "The Bye Bye Man" underneath.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday morning. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best horror film of the 21st century?
Charles Bramesco (@intothecrevasse), Freelancer for Rolling Stone, The Verge, Vulture
Everyone knows that the greatest Halloween film of all time is the 1962 nudie-cutie “House on Bare Mountain,” and my slavish devotion to giallo means that personal favorite horror movie of the new century is “Berberian Sound Studio”, but those are both answers to questions nobody asked. The finest horror film of the new millennium is “Cabin in the Woods”, both a dissertation on the history of the American scary movie and a chilling piece of work in its own right. The gang romance set in Brussels’ most notorious neighbourhood has earned comparisons to the 1995 French classic – and opened Hollywood’s doors for its Moroccan-Belgian directors
When Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah first read Dirk Bracke’s novel Black, they sarcastically joked that it would be their “ticket to Hollywood”, never imagining that such a thing was possible. As second-generation Moroccan-Belgians, they found that Black and its sequel – a sort of West Side Story set in the immigrant suburbs of Brussels – spoke to them. But as Arab teenagers seeking to break into Belgium’s tiny, overwhelmingly white film industry, the odds were stacked against them. Especially as it turned out someone else was already making a film of the book. Added to which, at the time, El Arbi and Fallah were in their first year at film school, which they duly flunked.

Today brings new images from a batch of films likely arriving this fall, the majority coming from A24. First up, perhaps our most-anticipated of the group is John Cameron Mitchell‘s adaptation of the Neil Gaman short story How To Talk To Girls At Parties. Led by Elle Fanning and Alex Sharp (seen in the first still above), the cast also includes Nicole Kidman, Ruth Wilson, and Matt Lucas.
One can see the synopsis below, followed by the first image from the Zoe Kazan-led horror feature There Are Monsters, from The Strangers director Bryan Bertino, as well as Ben Wheatley‘s star-studded actioner Free Fire, executive produced by Martin Scorsese. The only one not in the hands of A24 is James Franco‘s adaptation of Steve Erickson‘s Zeroville, which features the cast of Seth Rogen, Jacki Weaver, Megan Fox, Will Ferrell and Danny McBride.

Not much to speak of in the pre-amble this week except that From Dusk Till Dawn episode 2 on Netflix continued in fine form and presented an interesting and somewhat unique version of a vampire which was actually quite scary. If you have written this off because it sounds cheap and forced (admittedly on paper it does) I urge you to give it a watch, the dialogue alone is better than most TV shows, “Got your balls on?” is a great line I will repeat ad nauseam henceforth.

MGM has announced that they've partnered up with Fox 2000 Pictures to bring us a new Poltergeist film. They've been trying to get this remake off the ground and into production for years, but it's finally going to happen.
I'm a little apprehensive about the remake because the original is one of my favorite horror movies of all time. But I'm also kind of comforted by the fact that Sam Raimi is producing it, and Monster House director Gil Kenan is directing. I loved Monster House, and Raimi did a great job guiding the remake of Evil Dead in the right direction. If we can get an awesome Evil Dead remake, then I'm sure they can give us a solid Poltergeist remake. We'll just have to wait to see.

We all know, of course, what happened on April 15, 2013, in Boston, Massachusetts; as thousands of people ran a famous marathon through one of America's oldest and most historic cities, multiple explosions went off near the finish line. Many were killed or injured, and fundraisers have sprung up across the globe to help the community and the victims and their families. And one of the philanthropists lending a hand is one of horror's most beloved figures.
Adam Green, the director of Spiral and Frozen and the mastermind behind the popular slasher films in the Hatchet series, was born and raised in the Boston area in a small picturesque town called Holliston. Los Angeles — Characters are frequently urged to "release the beast" in "The Purge," a high-concept home-invasion shocker set in a future where one night a year, all crime is legal. But what should be a clammy exercise in claustrophobic, queasy tension becomes, in the hands of writer/director James DeMonaco, an underpowered compendium of over-familiar scare tactics and sledgehammer-subtle social satire. The intriguingly nightmarish premise may well rustle up a decent opening weekend for a picture that comes with the imprimatur of producer Michael Bay before the lukewarm word of mouth hastens its trip to DVD and VOD.
The hostiles-in-the-house sub-genre is, of course, ideal for small-screen viewing, turning the comforting spaces of the domestic environment into shadowy hiding places for miscreants. Five years ago, Bryan Bertino's "The Strangers" opened one weekend earlier to reap healthy returns, and DeMonaco tips his hat to that predecessor by having his psychopaths...

The talking pet genre has always had a loyal following, from Cats & Dogs to An American Tail: Fievel Goes West to the mecca, Homeward Bound. But it’s almost always been a purely family, kids friendly genre. That is, until now. Last week, Mandalay Vision and Vertigo Entertainment announced plans to produce Marjane Satrapi’s psychological thriller The Voices from a script by Paranormal Activity’s Michael R. Perry. Satrapi’s name will sound familiar to fans of the Oscar nominated animated film Persepolis, a movie she co-directed and wrote from her own comic book.
But that’s enough from me, let me direct you to the press release that details all the goodies:
Los Angeles, CA-August 5, 2012- Mandalay Vision announced today they will produce, along with Vertigo Entertainment, Academy Award-nominated director Marjane Satrapi’s psychological thriller “The Voices,” which she will direct from an original script by Michael R. Perry...

At Texas Frightmare Weekend I came across Grave Tone Productions' booth and had a chat with main man Brian Davis. Grave Tone's horror and metal music combination intrigued me. I learned Davis and his partner in mayhem have a lot of irons in the fire, and we discussed them all.
Mr. Dark: Who the hell are you, and what do you do?
Brian Davis: My name is Brian Davis. I am the primary composer, arranger and drummer for Grave Tone Productions. We make music for the haunt/horror industry.
MD: Grave Tone Productions got started doing custom horror music. How did you get into that business?
Bd: We built a database of haunted attractions and started sending out postcards and some demo CD's to them to try to spread our hybrid sound of traditional horror scores and aggressive music. From there we got involved doing film scores through some...

Not to be confused with "The Munsters" redux "Mockingbird Lane", what we have on tap here is some casting news for director Bryan Bertino's (The Strangers) new found footage flick for Universal.

We first heard of The Strangers director Bryan Bertino‘s Mockingbird back in November, and THR is now reporting on the lead for the Paranormal Activity-esque thriller: Todd Stashwick. Audrey Marie Anderson and Alexa Lydon have also been pegged for roles.
Formerly known as Red Balloons, the found footage picture “tells the story of a couple who are given a camera and a set of instructions. They must carry out what’s on the document or someone will die.” Stashwick will play the husband, with Anderson as his spouse; we’re not really sure who Lydon will play as of yet. I can see the correlation with Activity, but I’m also feeling a little bit of Saw as well.
Stashwick has played several roles on various TV show including House, CSI: Miami, Burn Notice as well as FX’s Justified. He’ll be seen next in Stephen Gyllenhaal‘s Grassroots,...

"Paranormal Activity 3" rocked the box office last weekend, and it looks like next October we may be able to find out what happened to Katie and Hunter — a fourth installment in the supernatural chiller is possibly heading our way. (Duh!)
With record-breaking numbers like "PA3's" it's no shocker that Paramount's Don Harris told The Wrap, "I can't imagine that we wouldn't make a number four, and I imagine [Paramount Film Group president] Adam Goodman this morning is thinking about the challenge. I'm sure he's thinking, 'Now what do I do?'" Where do you think they'll take the storyline from here?
Ponder that while you hit the jump to read the rest of this week's horror news.

This week’s episode of American Horror Story had less of a focus on the supernatural and more on the terror that can be inflicted by regular ol’ humans who wish to do you harm. There was nary a sign of the Rubber Man or the Giant Monster Baby with Teeth and Claws (Gmbtc, or Gumbtec as I like to call it). They are instead replaced by a trio of ne’er-do-wells intent on roving the Los Angeles area and recreating famous murders.
Although said killer probably could have picked from a long laundry list of murders to recreate considering the history of the Harmon house, they decide to replicate one featured in an extended prologue. In said prologue, a man pretends to be injured so that he can break in and kill the occupants in gruesome fashion. One is drowned, another is hogtied and stabbed.

Grindstone Entertainment and Lionsgate have acquired North American distribution rights to director Jack Heller’s horror flick “Enter Nowhere”, which will be making its premiere next month at ScreamFest in Los Angeles. The film stars “Shark Night’s” Sara Paxton, along with Scott Eastwood, Shaun Sipos, and Kathryn Waterston, and “tells of four strangers who find themselves stranded in a mysterious forest. The strangers seek shelter in an abandoned cabin and must learn to trust one another and work together to find a way out of the woods.” Here’s hoping it’s not all in their minds or that they’re actually trapped in purgatory or something stupid like that. Heller, who is making his feature film directorial debut on “Enter Nowhere”, directed the film from a script by Shawn Christensen and Jason Dolan...

It's no secret that a lot of NBA players invest in movies. I know of a few former and recent Indiana Pacers that do so, not to mention Baron Davis has his own company here in Los Angeles. The list goes on and on, but one to note is New York Knick Amare Stoudemire who may be dabbling in a little trailer park violence. According to the NY Post, the Knicks star, who's also a fashion designer and actor, is now in discussions with Relativity Media mogul Ryan Kavanaugh to executive-produce the long delayed The Strangers 2, a sequel to the 2008 chiller The Strangers. The original flick starred Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as a couple staying in an isolated summer house who are terrorized by masked assailants. It was produced by Relativity's Rogue division with a mere $9 million budget and grossed more than $80 million worldwide.

Straw Dogs, Sam Peckinpah's masterpiece of white male ownership of women's sexuality, has now been remade as a common torture-porn movie starring hot, untalented people.
Straw Dogs, which once starred Dustin Hoffman and was a film that made every person who saw it uncomfortable on so many different levels, is now part of the Screen Gems remake machine and stars James Marsden and - get this - Kate Bosworth as a newly married couple who go back to her small hometown, where her high-school hick boyfriend tries to rape her and kill her husband.
In the original, set in Wales, Hoffman portrays a regular guy forced to go to extreme measures to protect his home and wife from other aggressive males. In This new version, super-ripped, tall, gorgeous James Marsden plays a Los Angeles screenwriter, and the hicks are all "from the South", because the South is where you...

Damon doesn't get to have all the fun around here.
Zap2it caught up with "The Vampire Diaries" star Paul Wesley at a recent promotional shoot in Los Angeles, and before he had to hop on a plane back to Atlanta for production, he filled us in on a whole new side of Stefan.
In an upcoming episode, we'll flash back to 1864 again -- but this time, we'll see just how Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan first adjusted to their new vampire instincts after they turned.
"I'm so excited," Wesley tells us, his eyes lighting up. "We have a flashback, and Stefan is very Damon-esque. He's lost; he doesn't know what to do with himself. He's living in guilt, so he's just sinful, and lustful, and very Damon-like -- times ten. It's kind of fantastic."
In the present, Stefan has found a temporary fix for his blood addiction, as Elena...
