Marvel and Disney have released the official character description from the highly anticipated Joss Whedon directed movie The Avengers. For us movie and comic geeks it's no real surprise to us who these characters are and where they came from. But, some of the descriptions contain what may be considered minor spoilers for the story. I'm excited as hell to see this movie, I have a feeling it's going to blow peoples expectations away.
Read through the descriptions below and hit us up with any thoughts you might have.
Captain America (Steve Rogers)
After a top secret Super-Soldier program transformed frail Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) into the powerful and heroic Captain America, his amazing WWII exploits made him a living legend. Steve saved New York City and turned the tide of the war, but crashed into the Arctic during his final mission. Awakening in the modern day, Steve learned that...

Jules Winnfield's wallet -- the one that says "Bad Mother…" -- is more temping than ever now that the Guinness Book of World Records has named Samuel L. Jackson the highest-grossing actor ever.
Jackson's been working steadily since the 1970s and has well over 100 TV and movie credits to his name, but his breakthrough performance was in Spike Lee's movie "Jungle Fever." (He'd had small parts in previous Spike Lee joints before that, including "School Daze" and "Do the Right Thing.")
Over the years, the movies he's been in have grossed over $7.4 billion dollars. Can you imagine how many snake-filled planes that could buy you?
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the movies that made the biggest bang for Jackson's buck were "Jurassic Park," the "Star Wars" flicks and "Pulp Fiction." The infinitely quotable "Pulp Fiction" is arguably what vaulted him into the official bad ass hall of fame, besides...

Marvel Studios has pulled it off again with its fifth superhero to muscle his way onto the big screen in "Captain America: The First Avenger." Director Joe Johnston's fast-paced origin story about the World War II-era superhero was a critical and financial success and heightens the anticipation for seeing Cap team up with Iron Man, Hulk and Thor next year in "The Avengers."
Leading man Chris Evans -- who has always had the sick build of a superhero, and has played one before in two "Fantastic Four" movies as Human Torch -- is introduced in "Captain America" as scrawny Steve Rogers thanks to some digital downsizing. The asthmatic little guy desperately wants to enlist in the army to serve during World War II, but keeps getting declined owing to a laundry list of health problems. He is eventually recruited into a secret super-soldier program and, after taking a muscle-building serum,...

Two days have passed since the first trailer for "Marvel's The Avengers" burst its way online, and we still can't get enough. From our own analysis of the trailer to commentary from assorted movie and comic book experts, we here at MTV News remain insatiable in our appetite for all things "Avengers."
It's a good thing we're not alone. Writer Robert Kirkman, creator of the "Walking Dead" comic books and executive producer of the AMC television series, is just as enamored with Earth's Mightiest Heroes as we are — though he does have a few bones to pick with the first trailer.

Expectations have always been high for "The Avengers," but the surprisingly little footage we've seen from the actual film has put interest on a whole new level. Fans of comic book movies everywhere have been waiting a long time to get their hands on another scrap of official "Avengers" info, so for the trailer to not miss the mark, there are some specific things we need to see:

Production began on Marvel Studios' biggest, most ambitious comic book adaptation to date, The Avengers, back in April, but "The Road to The Avengers" actually began in 2008 in Iron Man, with a cameo appearance by Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. According to director Jon Favreau, Fury's "Avenger Initiative" reference in Iron Man was "just a joke," but it became a "self-fulfilling prophecy." When he began rolling on Iron Man 2, Favreau said that a "big part" of Marvel's "agenda" for the movie was "to set up The Avengers" movie. Subsequent movies Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger have also served that agenda, with references to the other movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe woven throughout.

An interesting rumor has popped up. A VFX artist is claiming he’s working on a CG creature for Joss Whedon’s The Avengers called The Leviathan, a creature of Atlanteanian origin. So could Namor and his people be featured?
There’s been plenty of hints throughout Iron Man 2, especially in the end sequence that showcased “activity” Sgt. Fury (Sam Jackson) was monitoring. Also, the big dome in which Iron Man, War Machine and Whiplash battle at was called Oracle after Oracle Corporation, a comic nod to the environmental company Namor uses.
So we have all thought that those stunt men in mo-cap suits were Skrulls. Now they just might be Namor and the Atanteans. Thoughts?

Disney held back from entering into the fray at San Diego’s Comic-Con last month to showcase their upcoming features at their D23 Expo this past weekend. Their presentation was highlighted by The Avengers, which began with a montage recap of all the elements from the Iron Man movies, The Incredible Hulk, Thor and Captain America. Then Samuel L. The Avengers might have failed to assemble for Comic con this year, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to leave 2011 without showing off something, somewhere. That “something” turned out to be two scenes and that “somewhere” ended up being Disney’s shindig spectacular D23. Potential Spoilers Below. According to EW, the first scene shown to the masses involved a testy exchange between Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and an imprisoned Loki (Tom Hiddleston) on the Shield Heli-carrier. Loki, we are told, is being contained in a super cage meant to hold the strongest of prisoners, namely the Hulk, who happens to be watching on (in the form of Mark Ruffalo) from a monitor in another room with Shield agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders). The exchange between Fury and Loki goes something like this: Loki: “How desperate are you, to call on such lost creatures to defend you?” Fury: “How desperate am I?...

In its inaugural appearance at D23, Marvel Studios ended the Walt Disney Pictures presentation with a bang. “We’re on production on ‘The Avengers’ movie,” said Marvel president Kevin Feige. “It’s incredible.” Feige also told the audience of over 4,000 attendees in the room the film is currently in production in Ohio with only two weeks left of production. Possible spoiler alert. Marvel Studios showed a clip of a scene from the film that involved Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston) and Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson). Fury led Loki into a high-tech cglass ell and warned Loki of escaping the prison. Loki mocked Fury about the uncontrollable power he intended to seek at that The Avengers will fail to stop him. One of the reasons I assume most people waited hours in line at todays Walt Disney Studios panel was to see “The Avengers.” Once we sat down in the D23 Arena, they made us wait for 2 ½ hours before giving us anything. Let me tell you, it was worth the wait.
Kevin Feige came out to talk a little bit about the production and how Disney fits into the Marvel universe. There are two weeks left of filming but the studio gave us a nice little treat to keep us occupied.
The clip opens with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in the custody of S.H.I.E.L.D. He is locked in a futuristic looking cell onboard the helicarrier. Nick Fury (Sam Jackson) enters the room and quickly sets the tone of the scene. Fury informs Loki that if he attempted to escape or even scratch the glass in his cell, he would pay price. Fury...

Having shunned last month’s Comic Con which surprised many given the success of last year’s complete cast reveal, Marvel brought their superhero ensemble extravaganza The Avengers to Disney’s D23 Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center over the weekend but those hoping the announcement of which two Marvel secret film projects that were announced a few weeks back are on the horizon, were left dissapointed.
No such announcement was made and your guess is still as good as ours over whether it could be Doctor Strange, Captain America 2, Ant-Man or whatever else we previously mused. Instead Marvel used their time on stage to discuss and show clips from the previous Marvel films, wisely selecting not to show much of The Incredible Hulk given they have changed the actor playing Bruce Banner for the ensemble picture (Mark Ruffalo replacing Edward Norton) and basically waxing lyrical about how satisfied...

Thanks to io9, we have an even more detailed description of The Avengers footage shown at D23 earlier today. The footage began with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in prison on board the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) addresses Loki through the clear panels of the cage: "In case it's unclear, if you try to escape, you so much as tap on the glass..." Fury then flicks a switch and the floor of the cage almost completely drops away, revealing a 30,000 foot drop to certain doom (or as certain as doom can be with someone like Loki). Loki simply observes, "It's an impressive cage", and he notes that it was clearly built for someone else. Fury says that it was - it was built for someone even stronger than him. Loki knows they're talking about the Hulk, calling him a mindless beast and wondering how desperate Fury must be to...

When "The Avengers" hits theaters next year, it will provide be the culmination of several years of exhaustive planning by the Marvel Studios team, and bring all of the characters introduced in their recent blockbuster films together for the first time. In short, it's an ambitious goal -- and not just because they're putting Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, and Hulk on the same screen, but also because they'll be expected to answer all of the questions they seeded throughout the five films leading up to this monumental team-up.
From Nick Fury's back story to Iron Man's alternate armor, there's been no shortage of speculation fodder left behind by the studio over the last few years of Marvel movies. With that in mind, here are the ten questions we're hoping to see answered when "The Avengers" premieres in 2012.

After confirming the actor behind 'Nick Fury' in the highly-anticipated film would be the only cast member filming at Nasa Plum Brook Center's Space Power Facility, in Sandusky, Oh, Sandusky Register has recieved confirmation of the facility's role in Marvel Studios' The Avengers. Though not surprising, check it out below. The Space Power Facility is being used to portray a research facility that's a joint project of S.H.I.E.L.D., the spy agency in the Marvel Comics universe run by "Nick" Fury, and Nasa, a film producer explained Thursday. Fury is portrayed by actor Samuel L. Jackson, who got a personal tour of the Spf on Wednesday from a Nasa official. Producer Jeremy Latcham said he expects the Plum Brook sequences to wind up in "several minutes" of the final film. He said Nasa logos will likely appear in the film, and the Spf should be recognizable to area moviegoers.

Though he’s appeared in both “Iron Man” movies, “Thor” and even “Captain America: The First Avenger,” Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury has been mostly relegated to small scenes and the movies’ signature post-credit “stingers.” In next summer’s “Avengers,” however, the actor will be playing a much larger role.
Speaking with BBC Newsbeat, Jackson spoke about how his heavily-guarded script for the movie was stolen and also about Fury’s increased screen presence this time around.
“I’m actually doing more than I’ve done in any of the other films,” the actor admitted. “You don’t have to wait until the end of the movie to see me. I’m actually around the whole movie and I do a lot more. I have action scenes and I actually do things to people in this movie.”

Samuel L. Jackson has already gotten to share screen time with Marvel titans — Robert Downey, Jr. in Iron Man and Iron Man 2, and Chris Evans in First Avenger: Captain America — in his four appearances as Nick Fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division). But, in The Avengers, he will be one of the titans, as Fury is upgraded from mysterious, behind-the-scenes superhero recruiter to tactical leader of a small army of superheroes facing a global threat. In a recent interview with the BBC, Jackson discussed what it is like to share the stage with so many actors playing iconic characters and revealed he will "do things to people" in The Avengers, rather than simply watching from the sidelines.

The movie trailer for Arena’, starring Twilight’s Kellan Lutz and Vampire Diaries actress Nina Dobrev has been rolled out the web, and so far the first look isn’t receiving positive reception. Many are calling the Jonah Loop directed fight movie and unoriginal rip off of the much loved 2000 movie Gladiator that featured Russell Crowe. The straight to DVD movie, set for release October 11th, doesn’t look promising. “David Lord finds himself forced into the savage world of a modern gladiatorial arena, where men fight to the death for the entertainment of the online masses.” Synopsis: ‘Arena’ its newest title, after being coined both ‘Deathgames’ and ‘The Killing Game, chronicles...

Here’s your first look at the trailer for “Arena” (formerly “Deathgames” before it was changed to “The Killing Game”), a new tournament fighting movie starring Samuel L. Jackson as the evil mastermind pitting the fighters against each other in front of some really bad green screen work and Kellen Lutz from “Twilight” and Tarsem Singh’s upcoming “Immortals”. It’s nothing you haven’t seen before; in fact, the film looks so generic that it’s downright painful. Really, it doesn’t look like they even tried to hatch a slightly original plot with this one. Hope you bought something nice with that paycheck, Sam. David Lord finds himself forced into the savage world of a modern gladiatorial arena, where men fight to the death for the entertainment of the online masses. Also starring Daniel Dae Kim (“Lost” and the new “Hawaii Five-o”) and Nina Dobrev (“The Vampire Diaries...

Last year Kellan Lutz was busy filming the movie “Deathgames”, about a man who is kidnapped and forced into gladiator games. Now the movie is known as Arena, and the trailer is available to watch!
Back in April of 2010 — the same day Paramount started looking for a writer to reboot Mighty Mouse (true) — it was announced that Samuel L. Jackson and Kellan Lutz would co-star in Deathgames, about a “young man (Lutz) who is kidnapped and forced into the savage world of a modern gladiator arena, where men fight to the death for entertainment of the online masses. Jackson orchestrates the games, overseeing them from his computer lair with the help of twin ladies who see to his every desire.”

If you happen to be a fan of trashy and ridiculous b-movies that involve some form of gladiatorial combat, welcome to your new favourite film. Arena is a movie that was first announced last April under the name "Deathgames", and at the time it sounded like it was going to be a theatrical release. A year and a half later, it is now apparently going direct-to-dvd. The movie stars Kellan Lutz (Twilight) as a man who is forced into a modern gladiator arena where combatants must battle to the death for the entertainment of online viewers. Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) also plays one of the gladiators, while Samuel L. Jackson plays the mastermind behind the whole operation. It kinda looks like Gamer and Death Race, but with even lower production values and even worse acting. The action scenes themselves also look uninspired, although with any luck there is some serious...

The Ultimate Universe’s next Spider-Man will be a half-black, half-Hispanic teen named Miles Morales. As revealed in today’s USA Today, the new Ultimate Spider-Man #1 will be the most radical next step in differentiating the imprint from the core Marvel Universe.
Brian Michael Bendis, one of the Ultimate Universe’s chief architects, will write the new series, debuting in September, with art from Sara Pichelli. But first, Morales will be introduced in this week’s Ultimate Fallout #4. The miniseries’ title refers to the repercussions felt in the superhero community over recent events including the death of Peter Parker.
“The theme is the same: With great power comes great responsibility,” Bendis told the newspaper. “He’s going to learn that. Then he has to figure out what that means.”

A trailer for fantasy fight-flick Arena, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Twilight: Breaking Dawn's Kellan Lutz, has been released online. Last week, I appeared on the BBC's "Talking Movies" for a review of "Captain America: The First Avenger" with Tom Brook. As our conversation wound down, Brook looked forward to next summer's "The Avengers," the superhero movie to end all superhero movies (and if it's is a flop, it very well could). He voiced an opinion I'm hearing with increasing frequency: that all of Marvel Studios' recent movies -- from "Iron Man 2" to "Thor" and now "Captain America" -- feel like "one gigantic promotional trailer, a big tease for that film."
There are moments in all those movies that make it hard not to think he's right. "Iron Man 2"'s story essentially pauses at the end of Act 2 so that Samuel L. Jackson can pop in and deliver the cameo equivalent of a commercial for "The Avengers." Over what could literally and figuratively be described as a narrative coffee break,...

By now, we know that at the end of every Marvel Studios superhero movie there is a teaser clip featuring the next Marvel movie. Often Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury appears to recruit our latest hero into the spy and law-enforcement agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Collegehumor took that concept and went a step further, parodying the idea of Fury appearing in other movies including The Social Network, Black Swan, Toy Story, yes, even Twilight: Eclipse. Take a look at the clip below and tell us what other movies would be even more awesome if they featured a Fury cameo? Warning, there is a quick S-bomb during the Paranormal Activity segment.

Joe Johnston knows how to direct adventure films but watching his growth as a director has been a pleasure. His first offering, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids was a visual effects feast, thanks to his training at Industrial Light & Magic. He followed up in 1991 with his first comic book adaptation, Dave Stevens’ Rocketeer and while the movie is far better than the critical reaction or box office would indicate, it still lacked that certain spark of delight for a summer blockbuster. Over the intervening years, Joe has continued to direct films that has shown steady growth as he has more subtly integrated effects with characterization with the family friendly Jumanji and the heart-warming October Sky. It was all good training as he took on what has become his highest profile project yet, Captain America: The First Avenger.
Clearly, he has learned his lessons as the critics – both mainstream and geek...

"Captain America: The First Avenger" made its star-spangled debut in theaters this past weekend, completing the introduction of the characters who will form the core of next year’s "Avengers." Like Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor before him, Captain America hails from a long comic tradition, but in his case, that history stretches back a full seven decades to the early years of the Second World War, giving those working on the film an even deeper well of stories to draw upon.
As a service to you, our readers, we’re delving into that rich history to show you just where the movie folks came up with the elements that went into this latest Marvel blockbuster. If you haven't seen the film yet, consider this your Spoiler Warning!

Marvel continues to roll out promo posters for its upcoming superhero team-up extravaganza, "The Avengers," throughout this year's Comic-Con in San Diego. This time around, they've offered up a pair of images that focus on the Asgardian god-heroes Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Odin (Anthony Hopkins), as well as the S.H.I.E.L.D. team of Nick Fury (Sam Jackson), Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), and Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg).
It's interesting to note that the Thor poster also features a shot of the thunder god battling his half-brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), who's expected to play a significant role in "The Avengers" after causing Thor all sorts of trouble in their solo film.
The other poster released during Comic-Con offers our first look at how Smulders will look as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill. The "How I Met Your Mother" actress is one of the prominent new additions to the Marvel movie universe in "Avengers," having...

The post-credits teaser for The Avengers has leaked online.
Running after the conclusion of Captain America: The First Avenger (which comes out in theaters this Friday), this sort of teaser is now an expected easter egg running at the end of every movie produced by Marvel Studios. But as quickly as the teaser goes up on video hosting sites, the lawyers issue a cease and desist, removing it from play.
Spoiler warning ahead: if you don't want to know what happens in the Captain America teaser, stop here!

"Captain America: The First Avenger" will hit theaters on Friday, July 22nd and while it will have a surprise for fans after the credits, it won't be just another scene. It will be a teaser trailer for "The Avengers." Spoilers Ahead: According to many people who have seen the film, the scene that Chris Evans and Samuel L. Jackson shot in Times Square is actually the last scene of the movie. Below is a description of it and "The Avengers" teaser. Final Scene: Captain America wakes up on a bed in a white room and hears a 1941 Mets baseball game and a girl similar-looking to Peggy Carter. He asks her "Where am I?" Two guards walk into the room and Captain America pushes them through a wall. He then runs out of the room and out of the warehouse where he was held. Suddenly, he finds himself in Times Square.

Having followed the production of Iron Man 2 closely, I had thought Jon Favreau’s immediate relationship with Marvel was over and he would have nothing to do with the superhero character for the near future, but it turns out I was wrong.

Kellan Lutz turned heads as he went for a beachside jog in Santa Monica yesterday. The actor worked on his fabulous frame after a night of celebrating some MTV Movie Award wins with the Twilight cast. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart took home their third best kiss honor, and Eclipse also racked up popcorn statuettes for best movie, best fight, and best male and female performances. Kellan, whose off-and-on relationship with AnnaLynne McCord seems to be back on, nonetheless arrived solo to the show. The ab-tastic actor recently told Chelsea Handler that he loves being in relationships, and he used his romantic experience when playing Mandy Moore's husband in the movie Love, Wedding, Marriage. The not-so-great Love, Wedding, Marriage reviews didn't stop the movie from opening in limited release last Friday, but Kellan is already getting excited about his next big-screen effort, The Killing Game, which features Nina Dobrev as his costar.

Jeff Danna has taken over scoring duties on the crime drama The Convincer. He is replacing Alex Wurman who had completed a score for the film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January. The movie is directed by Jill Sprecher (Thirteen Conversations on One Thing) and stars Greg Kinnear, Alan Arkin, Billy Crudup and Lea Thompson. The film follows a desperate insurance salesman whose scheme to get a hold of a rare violin leads to unforeseen consequences. Deadline reported in March that Ato Pictures is a wrapping up a domestic distribution deal for the drama, but no announcement has been made since and The Convincer is still awaiting a release date.

I just assumed that the director of Thor, Kenneth Branagh directed the post credit easter egg scene in Thor with Samuel L. Jackson and Stellan Skarsgard. Turns out that's not the case, in a recent interview with Skarsgard he revealed that The Avengers director Joss Whedon actually directed it, which makes sense because it is a lead-in to The Avengers. It's not really a big deal that Whedon directed this end scene, but it's something maybe some of you hardcore geeks might want to know.
For those of you who may have missed the end credit here's a little description of what went down. You are now entering Spoiler territory.

Hint: It wasn't Kenneth Branagh. Thor is still playing in theaters across the world and, if you're reading this site, chances are you saw it and stayed until after the credits to see what Easter egg Marvel had in store for us. I won't spoil what happens here, we'll do that after the jump, but according to one of the actors in the scene, it was not directed by Thor director Kenneth Branagh, but rather by The Avengers director Joss Whedon. After the jump, read how we found out about this but beware of Thor and Avenger spoilers in the context. Empire Online had [1] a chance to sit down with Thor co-star Stellan Skarsgard at the Cannes Film Festival (where he was promoting Lars Von Trier's Melancholia [2]) and asked him about his post-credits scene with Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Ever since Samuel L. Jackson first appeared as Nick Fury in a hidden scene at the end of Iron Man, we’ve all become trained to sit through the credits of a Marvel superhero film. Last year, the post-credits scene of Iron Man 2 featured a first glimpse of Thor’s fun-to-spell-but-hard-to-pronounce hammer Mjolnir. Thor continued the tradition this weekend, ending with a quick scene that simultaneously pointed toward this summer’s Captain America and next year’s superhero mega-team-up The Avengers. But I’m guessing that, if you’re not a comics fan, you probably left the theater with...
