Kevin Spacey has directed his first feature film in more than 20 years.

Variety understands that the two-time Oscar winning actor — who fell from grace in Hollywood following multiple accusations of sexual misconduct — has directed a supernatural action-thriller in which he stars alongside Dolph Lundgren, Tyrese Gibson, Brianna Hildebrand, Disha Patani and Eric Roberts.

The indie film, which has the working title of “Holiguards,” is planned to be the first in a franchise known as “Statiguards vs. Holiguards” and also stars Harry Goodwins (“The Gentlemen”), Swen Temmel (“The Clean Up Crew”) and Sonia Pim Couling (“Operation Bloodhunt”). It also marks the first feature to be produced by Elledgy Media, owned by Portugal-based Ukrainian entrepreneur Elvira Gavrilova Paterson.

As per the description, “Holiguards” is set against the backdrop of a near-future world fractured by hidden supernatural forces, where two ancient warrior factions — the Holiguards and the Statiguards — wage a secret war for control of humanity’s fate.

Meanwhile, revenues from television, which has been the biggest sector for 20 years, declined 4.5% to $7.9Bn (INR679BN). Linear TV revenues fell for the second consecutive year with a 6% drop in advertising revenue and a 3% decline in subscription revenue. Pay-tv homes decreased by six million, although free TV and connected TV homes increased.

Film was another contracting sector with domestic box office down 5% from $1.4Bn (INR120BN) in 2023 to $1.3Bn (INR114BN) last year, according to Ficci-ey figures. India’s media and entertainment sector hit INR2.5 trillion ($29.4 billion) in 2024, according to the annual Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci)-Ey report.

Titled ‘Shape the Future: Indian Media and Entertainment is Scripting a New Story,’ the report reveals that digital media overtook television for the first time, becoming the industry’s largest segment and accounting for 32% of total revenue, ending a two-decade reign by TV.

Advertising revenues grew 8.1%, reaching an all-time high of $14.9 billion. Digital platforms led the charge, with ad spends on e-commerce, short video, and social media driving digital advertising to $8.18 billion, now comprising 55% of the total ad market. Print and radio held ground with stable ad revenue, while digital Out-of-Home advertising jumped 78%, contributing 12% of the Ooh segment.

India’s filmed entertainment sector released 1,823 films in 2024, an increase of 64 over the previous year. Around 500 titles premiered on streaming platforms, though only 60 were direct-to-digital releases.

Variety reported this week that Sony Yay!, the Indian pay television channel operated by Sony Pictures Networks India (Spni), is developing a new mythological anime series, tentatively titled Project K. Spni exec Ambesh Tiwari described Project K as "possibly India's first anime series." While declining to mention which mythological character the series will depict, he added, "This is a very anime story with a little guy who has some kind of powers, then a full physical transformation happens." Project K will be developed in collaboration with Japanese partners, who will help 'build the series with authentic anime storytelling elements,' per Variety's report.
