A Minecraft Movie continues its march to $1 billion as it has officially crossed two major milestones in one weekend. The movie thrilled audiences in its opening weekend, sparking a strong response online. New Line Cinema announced the release date for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, opening in theaters on December 17, 2027. The Hunt for Gollum is one of two new films set in Tolkien’s Middle-earth, destined for theaters from the producing group.

Andy Serkis is getting behind the camera for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum and reprising his iconic role as the goblin-like scene-stealer for Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Serkis will not only direct, but star as Gollum as he did in the original Lord Of The Rings trilogy. First off, a new entry in the “Evil Dead” franchise will arrive on July 24, 2026, from Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema. Andy Serkis has lined up a leading role in an upcoming animated TV movie. The Lord of the Rings star is the latest cast member added to the upcoming children's special A Lamb’s Stew.

However, it was an animated, faith-based movie starring Oscar Isaac that came out on top of the rest of the weekend's newcomers.

Angel Studios' "The King of Kings," an animated retelling of the story of Jesus based loosely on Charles Dickens' "The Life of Our Lord," opened to a bigger-than-expected $19.3 million domestically. That came very close to challenging "Sound of Freedom" ($19.6 million) for Angel's biggest opening weekend to date. The 85-year-old actor said in a new interview that gay performers should help fight against discrimination in the entertainment industry by being open about who they are.

“I have never met anybody who came out who regretted it. I feel sorry for any famous person who feels they can’t come out,” Ian told The Times of London.

Despite The Lord of the Rings trilogy's Peter Jackson producing, Kenji Kamiyama directing, and an intriguing untold story-style premise about Helm Hammerhand and his daughter Héra defending what would become Helm's Deep, War of the Rohirrim's buzz didn't convert into ticket sales. The anime experiment earned $4.6 million at the box office -- an objective disappointment, considering its wide release and $30 million budget. However, recent streaming data shows War of the Rohirrim ranking among the top positions across various international markets since its debut on streaming platform Max.

Don't make a "Lord of the Rings" anime, they said. Look, it bombed at the box office, they said. There's no doubt that Warner Bros.' animated experiment with "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim" looked dead on arrival — or, at least, shortly afterward. Indeed, after a relatively decent amount of buzz in the lead up to its premiere, the movie landed with a thud in theaters back in mid-December.

According to The Numbers, the movie had a production budget of around $30 million. It proceeded to bring in less than $5 million during its opening weekend. When the Rohirric prequel closed up shop less than a month later, it had just cracked the $20 million mark when adding up both domestic and international ticket sales. Remember, theaters take a significant portion of that, too. No matter what way you slice it, or what ancient sword you use to do so,...

In any form of storytelling, there are bound to be clichés or tropes to ground the narrative within the realm of believability. The Lord of the Rings, based on J. R. R. Tolkien's eponymous novels, is no exception. That said, many fans have chosen to overlook Lord of the Ring's clichés, which include numerous well-known character archetypes in addition to countless other tropes related to worldbuilding.

Considering that the original story is now over seventy years old, it makes sense to suggest that Lord of the Rings was one of the first major novel series to popularize certain archetypes. Character clichés seen in Tolkien's universe have influenced much of the fantasy genre, most notably Dungeons & Dragons and video games like World of Warcraft. While Peter Jackson's film trilogy does inevitably omit some information from the novels, the main characters largely remain faithful to the source material.

There are a lot of crossovers and connections within Middle-earth media. Even with completely separate projects, like Prime Video's "The Rings of Power" series and Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" trilogies, you can see the throughlines. Some are obvious, like the similarities in Balrog design between Jackson's movies and Prime Video's show. Others are more subtle, like the ways "The Rings of Power" tries to recapture the magic of Jackson's Middle-earth movies. And then there is the human link.

On Sunday, the Motion Picture Sound Editors announced the winners of the Mpse Golden Reel Awards, and four of the five Oscar nominees for Best Sound came away victorious: Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, Wicked, and The Wild Robot. The fifth Oscar nominee, A Complete Unknown, had two Golden Reel nominations, but didn't win.

Dune claimed top honors for effects/foley. Wicked was awarded for music editing. The Wild Robot had the best sound editing for animation. And Emilia Pérez won the award for international features. Surprisingly, the dialogue/Adr prize went to Saturday Night, which ranked fifth in Gold Derby's odds, with only one user predicting that result.

Animations and New Line Cinema have announced that the story of Helm's Deep will premiere on Max a week from now, on February 28 followed by an HBO linear debut on March 1. The first film in the Lord of the Rings franchise since The Hobbit trilogy ended in 2014 has been available digitally since December and will now look to find an audience with subscribers alongside Peter Jackson's original films. Lord of the Rings fans who are sick of checking to see if their favorite movies are on one of the many streaming services they may or may not be subscribed to can now own all six Peter Jackson films in one box set. Per IGN, the new 4K Middle-earth 6-film Collection is now available for preorder on Amazon.

The set includes the extended and theatrical versions of all three Hobbit and Lord of the Rings films on 4K Uhd Blu-ray and digital. The set will be released on March 18 and is priced at $209.99. Fans of physical media will need to have a 4K Uhd TV with Hdr, an Ultra HD Blu-ray player, and a high-speed Hdmi cable to get the full experience of the 4K Uhd Blu-rays.
