Warner Bros. has slated some very high-profile new movies. Time to mark your calendars.

This entry hails from director Sébastien Vaniček, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Florent Bernard. Original “Evil Dead” masterminds Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi are on board as producers, with Souheila Yacoub listed as the only cast member (so far).
Additionally, “Remain,” the latest from M. Night Shyamalan, will hit theaters on Oct. 23, 2026, just in time for Halloween. This project is really interesting, because it was created alongside novelist Nicholas Sparks. The novel version of “Remain,” co-authored by Shyamalan, hits bookstores this October, with the movie a full year from then. The Middle Earth is about to expand again. In a surprising reveal during today's investor call, Warner Bros. executives decided to announce the release date of the highly anticipated The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt For Gollum. Details of the project are kept under lock and key, but we do know that, as the title hints, it will center on the fan-favorite character played by Andy Serkis — who also directs the adventure — and takes place during a very specific section within The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. The movie is set to premiere on December 17, 2027.
The announcement is aligned to Warner Bros.' investment in its own IPs in order to see their revenue numbers rise again. This year, the production company is at a turning point in its history: it has a ten-year plan led by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy) to resuscitate the DC cinematic universe,...

Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema have set a Dec. 17, 2027 theatrical release for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
Currently Disney has an untitled Star Wars movie in Comscore on that that 2027 date, but that probably just hasn’t been scrubbed from the system yet. Gollum will officially return to the big screen for Christmas 2027. Warner Bros. has announced that Andy Serkis’ “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” will open in theaters Dec. 17, 2027. The studio has also dated the next “Evil Dead” movie, starring Souheila Yacoub, for July 24, 2026, and M. Night Shyamalan’s “Remain” for Oct. 23, 2026. Jake Gyllenhaal, Phoebe Dynevor and Ashley Walters star in Shyamalan’s latest.
The release date for “The Hunt for Gollum” is hardly a surprise given all six movies in Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” film trilogies opened in December ahead of the Christmas holiday. Each trilogy powered to $2.9 billion at the worldwide box office.
Warner Bros. first announced “The Hunt for Gollum” last summer and said it would be ready for theaters in 2026. The film has been delayed a year. Serkis is directing the tentpole and once again starring in the title role,...

It was a surprisingly packed weekend at the box office, despite the fact that the previous weekend's champion, "A Minecraft Movie," managed to repeat atop the charts with another $80 million under its belt. At the same time, we had a handful of new movies opening this weekend including A24's war drama "Warfare," Rami Malek's action-thriller "The Amateur," and Blumhouse's new horror/thriller "Drop." However, it was an animated, faith-based movie starring Oscar Isaac that came out on top of the rest of the weekend's newcomers.
Angel Studios' "The King of Kings," an animated retelling of the story of Jesus based loosely on Charles Dickens' "The Life of Our Lord," opened to a bigger-than-expected $19.3 million domestically. That came very close to challenging "Sound of Freedom" ($19.6 million) for Angel's biggest opening weekend to date. That movie went on to become a word-of-mouth sensation, pulling in nearly $185 million domestically and more than $250 million globally.

Before Andy Serkis’ turn as Gollum/Smeagol in The Lord of the Ringstrilogy, motion capture had not been very widely used. It’s been nearly a quarter of a century since The Fellowship of the Ring was released, and now Serkis is synonymous with motion capture, but that wasn’t the case when he was making the Lord of the Rings film trilogy with director Peter Jackson.
Serkis, per PopVerse, appeared on a Lord of the Rings reunion panel at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) and talked about the reaction Jackson and the rest of the Lotr crew had to their first encounter with Serkis’ Gollum/Smeagol on set.
The actor/director recalled looking pretty silly in his motion capture suit at first. “These guys had been filming for about four or five months before I got out to New Zealand. I was going through the preparations for becoming Gollum,...

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim has the distinction of being the first Middle-earth-set anime, but it's also the franchise's biggest box office flop. However, in a surprise reversal of its box office misfortune, the film is enjoying major success via streaming.
Despite The Lord of the Rings trilogy's Peter Jackson producing, Kenji Kamiyama directing, and an intriguing untold story-style premise about Helm Hammerhand and his daughter Héra defending what would become Helm's Deep, War of the Rohirrim's buzz didn't convert into ticket sales. The anime experiment earned $4.6 million at the box office -- an objective disappointment, considering its wide release and $30 million budget. However, recent streaming data shows War of the Rohirrim ranking among the top positions across various international markets since its debut on streaming platform Max.

Don't make a "Lord of the Rings" anime, they said. Look, it bombed at the box office, they said. There's no doubt that Warner Bros.' animated experiment with "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim" looked dead on arrival — or, at least, shortly afterward. Indeed, after a relatively decent amount of buzz in the lead up to its premiere, the movie landed with a thud in theaters back in mid-December.
According to The Numbers, the movie had a production budget of around $30 million. It proceeded to bring in less than $5 million during its opening weekend. When the Rohirric prequel closed up shop less than a month later, it had just cracked the $20 million mark when adding up both domestic and international ticket sales. Remember, theaters take a significant portion of that, too. No matter what way you slice it, or what ancient sword you use to do so,...

In any form of storytelling, there are bound to be clichés or tropes to ground the narrative within the realm of believability. The Lord of the Rings, based on J. R. R. Tolkien's eponymous novels, is no exception. That said, many fans have chosen to overlook Lord of the Ring's clichés, which include numerous well-known character archetypes in addition to countless other tropes related to worldbuilding.
Considering that the original story is now over seventy years old, it makes sense to suggest that Lord of the Rings was one of the first major novel series to popularize certain archetypes. Character clichés seen in Tolkien's universe have influenced much of the fantasy genre, most notably Dungeons & Dragons and video games like World of Warcraft. While Peter Jackson's film trilogy does inevitably omit some information from the novels, the main characters largely remain faithful to the source material.

There are a lot of crossovers and connections within Middle-earth media. Even with completely separate projects, like Prime Video's "The Rings of Power" series and Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" trilogies, you can see the throughlines. Some are obvious, like the similarities in Balrog design between Jackson's movies and Prime Video's show. Others are more subtle, like the ways "The Rings of Power" tries to recapture the magic of Jackson's Middle-earth movies. And then there is the human link.
Overall, there isn't too much personnel crossover between the Warner Bros. and Prime Video Middle-earth universes. However, there is one actor who has managed to pop up in both of them: Jed Brophy. Even more impressive? He managed to land full-blown character roles in all six of Jackson Middle-earth films and has since shown up on "The Rings of Power." He's even developed a...

The most divisive Lord of the Rings film has made a comeback on its streaming debut on Max. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, which massively underperformed at the box office in 2024 and received some very mixed critical reviews, has debuted at the top of Max’s streaming chart. Following in the footsteps of many other theatrical flops, the animated movie has finally found an audience several months after its December release in cinemas.
When The War of the Rohirrim was first announced, fans seemed to be on board with the addition to the Tolkien franchise, but the film’s biggest initial stumbling block became its anime animation format. The story of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan from long before the events of The Lord of the Rings, was an untouched chapter of the fantasy saga’s screen adaptations. Lisa Kudrow and Brian Cox face a fate even worse than time with their families in the trailer for the horror-comedy movie The Parenting.
The poltergeist feature from director Craig Johnson (The Skeleton Twins) is set to begin streaming via Max on March 13. Edie Falco, Dean Norris, Nik Dodani, Brandon Flynn, Vivian Bang and Parker Posey round out the ensemble cast.
The Parenting centers on Rohan (Dodani) and Josh (Flynn), a young gay couple who plan a weekend getaway with their families at a country home before realizing that the abode appears to be inhabited by a demon.
“There is something really bad happening in this house,” Flynn declares in the trailer. “I’m stuck in a haunted house with my fucking parents.”
The trailer shows the characters finding an unusual method of subduing a possessed dog. Additionally, Cox is seen strolling naked through the house for reasons that remain unclear.

On Sunday, the Motion Picture Sound Editors announced the winners of the Mpse Golden Reel Awards, and four of the five Oscar nominees for Best Sound came away victorious: Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, Wicked, and The Wild Robot. The fifth Oscar nominee, A Complete Unknown, had two Golden Reel nominations, but didn't win.
Dune claimed top honors for effects/foley. Wicked was awarded for music editing. The Wild Robot had the best sound editing for animation. And Emilia Pérez won the award for international features. March won't be a great month for Dragon Ball fans subscribed to Cartoon Network. The animation channel's Toonami block will experience a significant loss in content related to Dragon Ball Z Kai.
According to the Cn News/Schedules account on X (formerly Twitter), the Toonami airings of Dragon Ball Z Kai will loop back to the anime's first episode on March 8, 2025, instead of continuing with the "Frieza" saga. This is a serious blow because the next episode is the iconic introduction of Super Saiyan Goku. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is the most recent movie in the popular Lord of the Rings franchise. Many fans have accused The War of the Rohirrim of misusing its titular characters, like Fréaláf. Although Fréaláf plays a vital role in the movie's climax, he remains absent from most of the adaption. His disagreement with King Helm of the Rohirrim sees him sent away extremely early on in the film. Yet, this decision is a significant disservice to his most iconic and final moment in the adaption.
Fréaláf's entrance is supposed to reference Gandalf's fantastical entrance from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, but there's a disconnect between these two moments. While Gandalf is one of the most popular and important characters in the franchise, Fréaláf is only a minor character in The War of the Rohirrim. He may have many notable feats,...

Few franchises and characters can stand the test of time in the annals of pop culture. Star Wars is one such property. Many Marvel and DC characters are striving to become just that — entities that will be talked about for decades to come. For literature enthusiasts, The Lord of the Rings stands tall as the gold standard. That's why J.R.R. Well, Lord of the Rings is expanding, as seen with Kenji Kamiyama's The War of the Rohirrim exploring the anime medium. Granted, much like The Rings of Power,...

The Lord of the Rings is undoubtedly one of the most iconic movie trilogies of all time, not just limited to its fantasy genre. When looking for movies or television shows that bear a resemblance to the franchise, fast-paced and frantic action will get you close, with grand battles for territory in medieval worlds getting even closer to matching the winning formula of The Lord of the Rings. Although the franchise continues to drop exciting content occasionally — with the spin-off series The Rings of Power and the recently released animated movie The War of the Rohirrim — fans might feel inclined to look for a new innovative fantasy story.
Expectations will be high when looking for something on par with The Lord of the Rings films. Fortunately, there are a few great television shows that manage to rival, and even surpass, the incredible and classic trilogy. From historical TV shows to grim fantasy tales,...

"The Lord of the Rings" is a franchise that is beloved by critics and fans alike. Films set in Middle-earth tend to do well at the box office, gather streaming steam without trouble, and are considered top rewatching material by many. However, a recent addition to the cinematic Tolkienian canon has officially ranked on Rotten Tomatoes as a blight on the otherwise impressive "Lord of the Rings" track record.
"The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim" has set a new "Lord of the Rings" franchise record low with a 48% on the Tomatometer. This is the critical consensus, and it has a lot to say for a Warner Bros. project that had the makings of greatness but couldn't quite stick the landing.

The first thing that fans do after watching an epic movie is to fire up the internet and search for similar films. That's the kind of experience that only a great piece of visually stunning, well-written, and executed film can offer – like The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien's genius adaptation gave the audience one of the greatest fantasy stories of the century. There can hardly be something as superb as Lotr ever again, but that doesn't mean the viewers can't relive the feeling through other great fantasies.
Thanks to the existence and success of the Lotr trilogy, several other iconic movies tried their luck at ruling the genre. And even though none can come close to the enormity of Peter Jackson's masterpiece, several great fantasy films have been inspired by Lotr's magic. Several of these movies were somewhat successful in stimulating fans' imaginations as the iconic franchise did.
