Hulu has to be pretty pleased with its list of new releases for June 2024. That’s because it’s about to be the summer of The Bear once again.
The Bear season 3 premieres all of its episodes on June 27 on Hulu. This FX dramedy has proven to be one of the most successful shows of its era. Jeremy Allen White stars as Carmy Berzatto, a world-famous chef who returns home to Chicago to help his floundering family restaurant after the death of his brother. Season 2 saw The Original Beef of Chicagoland crew transform the spot into fine dining establishment The Bear. It ruled. So will season 3 probably.
FX is responsible for the other major TV release on Hulu this month. Clipped premieres on June 4 and is about the scandalous real life story of Donald Sterling, the awful owner of the basketball team the Los Angeles Clippers. Another intriguing TV option...

No one could top the sensational ending to “The Jinx” — not even “The Jinx.” In 2015, the HBO true crime docuseries profiling New York real estate heir and alleged serial murderer Robert Durst shocked the world by catching Durst on a hot microphone making an apparent confession. “Killed them all, of course” was hardly a smoking gun from a legal point of view, but as television, those five words were the kind of stunning revelation that decades-old cold cases rarely provide. That Durst himself delivered the line in his distinctive, croaking rasp lent the whole saga the air of Greek tragedy, epitomizing the millionaire’s bizarre compulsion to unburden himself to filmmaker Andrew Jarecki in defiance of his own good luck.
“The Jinx: Part Two” concludes on a more anticlimactic note. Despite Durst’s 2021 conviction for the murder of his former friend Susan Berman and, in 2022, his death in prison, the...

When the first season of “The Jinx” concluded in 2015, it did so with a bang. That March, Robert Durst’s mumbled confession — “Killed them all, of course” — became the catchphrase of news broadcasts, late night shows and everyday conversations. It also sparked a trend in the larger television landscape. After years of being sidelined as a niche interest or confined to low-budget endeavors, true crime documentaries were at the forefront of pop culture.
“The Jinx” was followed by other buzzy, critically-acclaimed installments in the genre such as “Making a Murderer,” “Amanda Knox” and “The Keepers” on Netflix and “Mommy Dead and Dearest,” “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark” and “The Vow” on HBO. But the man who unintentionally sparked this boom doesn’t necessarily see it as a good thing.

If The Rookie Season 6 Episode 6 wasn't anything else, it was utterly brutal for those viewers who love the fan-favorite 'ship as we watched a multi-season-long slow-burn relationship that appeared rock solid get pulled from beneath our feet in the blink of an eye.
The hour also presented us with another notorious Rookie villain who may unsurprisingly pop up again and have Bailey and Nolan reach an underwhelming decision about parenthood.
We also saw that rookies Celina and Thorsen still have much to learn.
On the topic of Celina, will we ever delve deeper into an actual storyline that addresses the series of errors she makes and the consequences of her actions hitting her full force?
It's hard to know if Celina's more recent and ongoing pattern of fumbling something up reflects her and something deeper that we've yet to explore or speaks to...

The week of the Super Bowl was a relatively light one for streaming in the United States — but that allowed a couple of shows to score solid positions in the top 10 despite relatively modest viewing times.
Netflix’s romance One Day, which premiered Feb. 8, was one of them — finishing fifth among original shows despite only gathering 296 million minutes of viewing in the U.S. for the week of Feb. 5-11. In the previous five weeks, the show in that slot had averaged 555 million minutes of watch time. Paramount+’s Halo also made its first appearance in the top 10, finishing fourth among originals with 354 million minutes as it opened its second season.
Only two shows, acquired stalwarts Young Sheldon (1.35 billion minutes on Netflix and Max) and Bluey (1.14 billion minutes on Disney+), eclipsed a billion minutes for the week. Mr. and Mrs. Smith moved into first place among originals with 765 million minutes of watch time.

Of all the characters introduced in the "Star Wars" original trilogy, it's hard to think of two who were, for a long time, done a greater disservice than Owen Lars and Beru Whitesun Lars. As the adoptive parents of Luke Skywalker, they're pivotal to the narrative; unfortunately, the stories that were being told post "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope" didn't require more than a brief drop-in on the Tatooine farmers.
Their best bet at extended screen time came during the prequel trilogy, but, even then, they're just humble desert folk eking out a living while the galaxy succumbs to the fascist tyranny of the Sith. So while it was nice to see a little more of the couple (portrayed in the prequels by Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse), knowing what we thought we knew of Obi-Wan Kenobi's exploits between the prequels and the Ot, it seemed like...

Netflix’s Griselda spent a second week as the top streaming title in the United States, according to Nielsen. It was one of three shows to snag more than a billion minutes of watch time for the week of Jan. 29-Feb. 4.

Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love easily maintained its lead over Sony’s troubled superhero pic Madame Web at the Thursday box office after opening the previous day at $14 million from 3,536 theaters, the top midweek opener ever for Valentine’s Day, the studio says. The honor previously belonged to 2012’s The Vow ($11.5 million). Better yet — and despite “meh” reviews — audiences seem to dig One Love and gave it an A CinemaScore.
The Bob Marley biopic earned another $3.9 million Thursday for a two-day domestic tally of $17.9 million. It is also a force overseas, including opening Wednesday to $2.3 million in the U.K., a record for a music biopic.
In North America, One Love is doing more than double the business of Madame Web, which grossed $6 million on Valentine’s Day after getting ravaged by critics and a C+ CinemaScore from audiences. It added $2.2 million Wednesday for a two-day total of $8.2 million.

Paramount Pictures’ music biopic Bob Marley: One Love has made a strong start at the North American box office, grossing $14m on Wednesday (February 14) to become, according to Paramount, the biggest mid-week Valentine’s Day opener ever.
The record was previously held by Sony’s romantic drama The Vow, which had an $11.5m North American opening in February 2012.
One Love opened in 3,536 domestic locations ahead of the Friday-to-Monday US Presidents’ Day holiday weekend.

Valentine's Day gave the box office the shot in the arm it sorely needed as both Paramount's "Bob Marley: One Love" and Sony's "Madame Web" opened in theaters. They will both have a nice, long initial stretch as they not only got the mid-week holiday opening, but they will benefit from this Monday's President's Day holiday as well. As far as the head-to-head battle goes? It's not going to be remotely close, as the Bob Marley biopic is crushing Sony's latest Marvel Comics adaptation in the early going.
"One Love" pulled in $14 million on Wednesday, which marks a new record for a mid-week Valentine's Day opening. While that's nowhere near the record "Deadpool" ($42.5 million) set on the holiday back in 2016, which fell on a Sunday that year, it's now a high watermark for a non-weekend V Day debut. The previous record holder was 2012's "The Vow" ($11.6 million). Given...

You don’t have to be clairvoyant to know that Madame Web has been receiving some pretty savage reviews, and it turns out that the box office is equally unimpressive. The Marvel movie opened in theaters today, but it’s already getting destroyed by Bob Marley: One Love, the biopic of the iconic reggae musician.
Bob Marley: One Love is looking to pull in $12 million today, which is the best showing for a Valentine’s Day midweek release since Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams’ The Vow in 2012. As for Madame Web, the film is lagging way behind with only $5-$5.5 million. The six-day projections aren’t much better, with Bob Marley: One Love looking at $30 million and Madame Web looking at $20 million.

Anonymous Content and Spain’s Morena Films, behind box office breakouts “Cell 211” and Champions, have named former Studiocanal executive Beatriz Campos as the managing director of their Spain-based film-tv production venture Anonymous Content España.
Campos will oversee the company’s day-to-day operations working closely with David Davoli, Anonymous Content’s president of international, and Morena Films CEO Pilar Benito, Anonymous Content and Morena Films announced Monday. Launched in May 2023, Anonymous Content España aims to develop and produce premium Spanish projects for a global market.
That is easily said, but several factors work in its favor and will be aided now by Campos’ appointment. As film and TV producers still battle a hugely competitive market and spiralling production costs, companies are reaching out for partners beyond national markets, a structure embodied in Anonymous Content España. Anonymous can also help Morena access U.S.-stars, which may allow their productions to stand out in the crowd.

One Christmas Warner Bros. release replaced another this week with “Wonka” taking over as #1 from “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” on all VOD charts. However, other late-year releases including “Migration,” “Wish,” and “The Marvels” aren’t having the same luck. While theatrical is the premium marketing tool for home viewing, we’re seeing that it doesn’t always translate to chart placement.
Universal’s “Migration” is weaker than past animated releases, currently #4 at Vudu (which tallies by revenue). Disney’s “Wish,” also in week two, placed only on two charts. In its third week, “The Marvels” only placed on Vudu and is #20 at Apple TV. “Ferrari” (Neon) and “The Color Purple” (Warner Bros.) are gone after one week. “The Boys in the Boat” (Amazon MGM) managed just one week on the charts.
“The Beekeeper” (Amazon MGM), which is still performing well in theaters (#3 this weekend), is available at home after 18 days.

The title’s no hype. Since “Money Heist” became Netflix’s first true-blue global non-English blockbuster in 2018, Spain has consistently seen its top shows and movies rank high in global streamer charts, or sell worldwide, such as The Mediapro Studio’s “The Head.”
In 2022, in Europe, most fiction titles commissioned by global streamers were produced in Spain (34) and the U.K. (32), according to the European Audiovisual Observatory.

We all know what happened after 2004’s Mean Girls – Regina became a lacrosse champ, Karen used her psychic boobs to present the morning weather announcements, Gretchen co-opted the Cool Asians, and Cady floated in a newly repaired girl world… while keeping a beady eye on any emerging Young Plastics set to reinstate the old hierarchy. Now there’s a film of the musical of the film.

Buoyed with Paco Plaza’s “Sister Death” riding high in Netflix non-English film global rankings for a second week running, Los Angeles, Mexico City and Madrid-based El Estudio has named seasoned Spanish showrunner Tirso Calero, creator and script co-ordinator on “Servir y Proteger,” “Bandolera” and “L’Alqueria Blanca,” as TV contents director in Spain. He is based out of Madrid. His incorporation coincides with the creation of a TV division at El Estudio, which Calero will head up.

Director Cecilia Peck is no stranger to competing docuseries on the same topic. Her last project, Seduced: Inside the Nxivm Cult, came on the heels of The Vow, HBO's own docuseries about the group and its disgraced leader Keith Raniere. At the time, there was much discussion about which project was better, with the general consensus being that Seduced, though less discussed because of its home on Starz and later release (it premiered the night of The Vow's Season 1 finale), offered a more focused look at the cult's insidious practices and a more reliable narrator in victim India Oxenberg.

Channing Tatum is one of the biggest heartthrobs in Hollywood. He's made us swoon by playing the hunky lead in romantic movies like "Dear John" and "The Vow" and also made us laugh with comedies like "21 Jump Street" and "Magic Mike." Still, we can't forget the movie that made us first fall for him: "Step Up," in which Tatum plays a hip-hop dancer named Tyler Gage opposite Jenna Dewan's Nora Clark. The pair's chemistry throughout the film is on fire, so it was no surprise they eventually took their romance off-screen.
Tatum and Dewan dated each other for three years before tying the knot in 2009. After seven years together, the stars welcomed their first child, a daughter named Everly Tatum, in 2013. However, in 2018, Tatum and Dewan announced their separation after nine years of marriage.

Spain’s TV fiction industry is exercising some caution after high-end Spanish-language series lifted off in 2018.
“We all wanted to launch so many projects, so many new platforms arrived that there was no time for analysis,” says Bambú co-founder Ramón Campos.
As streamers scale back on originals and sales cycles slow, the industry has time for larger re-calculation.
“We come from a spectacular moment, in terms of both quality and volume,” says Sonia Martínez, series editorial director at Buendía Estudios.
That groundbreaking moment, championed by series like “Money Heist” and “Elite,” propelled Spanish fiction production to historic heights of global popularity.
“There is a virtuous circle that began in 2018 and has been continuously regenerating. Spain’s talent base already interests international audiences,” says María Valenzuela, Movistar Plus Intl.’s general manager.

With six Oscar nominations (with two wins), well over a dozen Golden Globe nods spanning 40+ years, three Primetime Emmys, and countless other accolades, Jessica Lange has had a fantastic career in Hollywood. But at 74, she thinks it may be time to hang it up – not because she’s older but partly due to comic book movies.
Speaking with The Telegraph, Jessica Lange said that she is concerned at how far creativity has fallen as a priority. And one of the key culprits is the sort of fare that Marvel, DC and more are pushing in theaters multiple times a year. “I’m not interested in these big comic-book franchise films. I think that they’ve sacrificed this art that we’ve been involved in…for the sake of profit.” While Lange didn’t explicitly say that the MCU is to blame for her leaving the business, consider this thought: “I...

With the success of long-format cult-exposé documentaries such as Hulu’s “Stolen Youth,” HBO’s “The Vow” and Netflix’s “Wild Wild Country,” it’s not surprising that both Amazon and Netflix greenlit competing docuseries about Twin Flames Universe – an alleged online love cult run by YouTube influencers Jeff and Shaleia Divine.
Amazon’s “Desperately Seeking Soulmate: Escaping Twin Flames Universe” is being released on Oct. 6, a month before Netflix’s “Escaping Twin Flames.”
“Desperately Seeking Soulmate” is based on journalist Alice Hines’ 2020 Vanity Fair article about the “always online, all-consuming world of Twin Flames Universe.” The article and subsequent docuseries, which Hines leads, takes a deep dive into the alleged online love cult, which is still active. Created by Jeff and Shaleia, Twin Flames Universe sells online classes that guarantee to match each member with their “soulmate.” The three-part Amazon docuseries examines how Jeff and Shaleia met and formed...

HBO's 2020 documentary, "The Vow," is a true-crime project at its core, taking on the chilling scandals of the Nxivm organization. Because the group recruited wealthy women, the sex cult and pyramid scheme underlying the self-help dogma of Nxivm also intersected with celebrity culture. Yes, cofounder Keith Raniere was at the center of it all, and he had a reputation for coercing women into sex and free labor for the organization. But Raniere's second hand was none other than Allison Mack, who's best known for her decade-long run in "Smallville" as Chloe Sullivan.
On July 5, The New York Times reported that Mack was released early from prison, serving two years of her three-year sentence. Meanwhile, Raniere is still serving his 120-year prison sentence. But Mack certainly wasn't the only Hollywood star tied to Nxivm. Ahead, we've compiled a list of celebrities with links to the infamous cult.

When Nxivm was exposed as a cult dealing in sex trafficking in 2017 by The New York Times, its top members and their shady dealings were also exposed - including "Smallville" actor Allison Mack. In HBO's docuseries "The Vow," which premiered in 2020, viewers saw how leader Keith Raniere convinced people to join and how Mack helped draw women in. The organization, which claimed it was for empowerment and finding control in your life, turned out to be something much darker. Mack and Raniere eventually went to prison for their roles in the cult. On July 5, news broke that Mack had been released from prison early. Here's a rundown on what Mack's role was and how she ended up behind bars.
What Was Allison Mack's Role in Nxivm?

Allison Mack has been released from prison.
The Smallville alum had been serving a three-year sentence in prison after pleading guilty to manipulating women into becoming sex slaves via the Nxivm cult.
She was charged with sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy, and forced labor conspiracy and handed a three-year sentence.
News of her release was first shared by Albany Times-Union, which revealed the actress was released Monday, July 3, from a federal prison in Dublin, California, near San Francisco.
The news means that Mack served two of the three years.
Allison Mack was initially facing up to 17 years in prison, but cooperating with prosecutors pursuing a case against ringleader Keith Raniere helped her secure a shorter sentence.
Before her sentencing, Mack wrote a statement to the judge expressing "remorse and guilt" for her actions.

Allison Mack, a former actor on “Smallville” who was a key member in leader Keith Raniere’s Nxivm cult, was released from prison on Monday after serving two years of her three-year sentence. She pleaded guilty to racketeering and racketeering conspiracy charges in 2021.
Raniere was sentenced to 120 years in prison in October 2020 on charges of sex trafficking, forced labor conspiracy and racketeering. Mack recruited and groomed women to the Nxivm cult, and Raniere took them as sexual partners. Some of the women were branded with Raniere’s initials and were sexually abused by him while they were members of the group.
In Mack’s sentencing in June 2021, a federal judge called her an “essential accomplice” to Raniere.

Toledo, Spain — The tide has changed. Just one year after Disney+ dazzled with “Santa Evita,” a banner title from its extraordinary swathe of Latin American originals, the 7th Conecta Fiction & Entertainment caught the mood of a larger international market with panelists in its conference strand focusing often on market challenges, when a feeding fever for premium content dominated conversations in recent editions. That said, running June 26-29 in Toledo, in market attendance and insight and shows brought to market, Cf&e fairly rocked.
10 takeaways from this year’s edition:
Conecta Fiction Booms
