Celine Dion, Himesh Patel and Hannah Waddingham will lead the voice cast of “High in the Clouds,” Paul McCartney’s anticipated 3D animated film which Gaumont (“Ballerina”) is producing and repping internationally.

Inspired by the children’s adventure book by Paul McCartney, Geoff Dunbar and Philip Ardagh, “High in the Clouds” will also bring together Idris Elba, Lionel Richie, Ringo Starr, Jimmy Fallon, Clémence Poésy, Pom Klementieff and Alain Chabat.

Celebrated independent animation filmmaker Toby Genkel (“The Amazing Maurice”) is directing the feature, from a script by Jon Crocker (“Paddington 2”), and production design by Patrick Hanenberger.

Released in 2022, DreamWorks Animation’s animated heist comedy The Bad Guys, based on the books by Aaron Blabey, pulled in over $250 million worldwide, launching a franchise that has included two Netflix streaming specials (The Bad Guys: A Very Bad Holiday and The Bad Guys: Haunted Heist) and will see a sequel, The Bad Guys 2, reaching theatres on August 1, 2025. After raking in $250M, it’s no shock Mr. Wolf and his crew are ready for more shenanigans. Mr. Wolf and the Gang are Back

Oscar-winner Sam Rockwell returns as the slick pickpocket Mr. Wolf. Marc Maron’s sarcastic safe-cracker Mr. Snake, Craig Robinson’s shape-shifting Mr. Shark, and Anthony Ramos’ short-tempered Mr. Piranha are all set to join the ride. DreamWorks is starting off the spooky season with an all-new direct-to-streaming special, The Bad Guys: Haunted Heist, on Netflix. The special is based on the 2022 animated feature film The Bad Guys, a group of criminals framed for a crime they didn’t commit and set out to clear their name and eventually switch sides.

The special takes place before the film’s events when they were still pulling off treasure-stealing heists. This is their second Netflix special, the first being the 2023 Christmas special The Bad Guys: A Very Bad Holiday.

DreamWorks Animation is best known for its hit series of Shrek movies based on a 1990 children's picture book of the same name by author William Steig. In 2022, the studio took a page from its past success and dove back into children's literature for its next great idea. The Bad Guys was a moderate boon at the box office and received favorable reviews from both critics and audiences, but it hasn't garnered nearly as much attention as DreamWorks' most titular ogre. When Netflix released its latest major data set on Thursday — its second under the name of What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report — animated features continued to demonstrate a major impact for the streamer. Of the top 100 most viewed titles in the period of review, from July to December 2023, 33 were animated, bringing in a total of 1,087,600,000 views.

That being said, titles licensed from other studios continued to heavily overshadow Netflix originals, in terms of impact. Of the 33 animated titles in the Top 100, five were produced by Netflix; the Adam Sandler starrer Leo ranked the highest at #3 overall, coming in with 96 million views. Others that made the cut included The Monkey King, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the Oscar-nominated Nimona, The Sea Beast and Back to the Outback.

The Bad Guys: A Very Bad Holiday is set before the events of 2022's The Bad Guys, and it revolves around the original gang of animal criminals trying to save Christmas after accidentally causing a giant fire involving the Santa Claus balloon. 

Interestingly, none of the original voice cast returned to voice their characters.

The Bad Guys: A Very Bad Holiday is a prequel to The Bad Guys movie, featuring the same characters and a new voice cast. The destruction of the city's Santa balloon leads to Christmas being temporarily canceled and threatens The Bad Guys' bank heist plans. Exclusive: The Super Mario Bros. Movie has set its Netflix premiere date for the U.S., Deadline has learned, which is the same day the film is set to leave Peacock: December 3rd. At Netflix, the record-breaker from Uni/Illumination joins a slate of titles with which the whole family can engage.

With the holidays on the horizon, it’s the time of year when locking down titles of this sort is critical, given the promise of a huge surge in viewership. In 2022, family-friendly series and films were in the Top 10 TV or Film lists in 59 countries every week from Thanksgiving to Christmas. Throughout the same period, family-friendly films also made up at least three of the global Top 10 English Films each week.

Netflix’s slate for November 2023 has much to offer as the transition from Halloween to Thanksgiving and eventually Christmas begins. Many favorite movies such as Jennifer Garner’s “13 Going on 30” and “The Big Lebowski” arrive Nov. 1, while Garner’s new movie “The Family Switch” rounds out the month when it arrives on the streamer Nov. 30. Other can’t-miss film arrivals on November first include “Whiplash,” “Sixteen Candles,” “The Social Network” and “Pitch Perfect.”
