Inside the jar, the wasp struggles, confused by its inability to pass through the glass. It was lured in by jam and now, too late, it seems to recognise its own helplessness. Elio (Vidal Arzoni) watches it intently. When his mother comes home she tells him not to torture it. There’s only so much she can do to bring him up right, as she’s also working nightshifts in order to put food on the table. Life is tough for immigrants. Still, she’s confident that things are going well for her bright, lively boy, especially now that he has a tutor taking an interest in him. He seems to be on course for a bright future.

CAAMFest 2024 had its own fair share of student films – and this year, we gathered up five (!) student teams to speak to one another. The roundtable consisted of generous description of “student,” including a PhD and a high schooler, MFAs and recent grads. Harleen Kaur Bal, a PhD student at Uc Davis, told us about “Unpacking Immigration,” a short film about Punjabi workers at meatpacking plants in California. UCLA grad Emory Chao Johnson recalled their graduation film, “默 (To Write from Memory),” an experimental mother-child film about gender transition. UCLA grad Jacqueline Chan's nostalgic short “Chan is Fishing” meditates upon her father, an aging Hong Kong immigrant, searching for a spot to fish in the desert. San Diego State University crew Laura Skokan, Shao Chiu Yen, and Nguyen Ha Uyen Phan recounted their experience behind “The Fanatics,” a true story-inspired tale about slipping into a Taiwanese cult. Finally, NYU-bound Kaiya...

Zendaya seems to have a busy 2024 as her second release in two months recently opened in cinemas. The Dune: Part Two star recently featured in Luca Guadagnino’s sports romance Challengers, which also stars Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor. The film was set to release in 2023 but was postponed when the SAG-AFTRA strikes began.
Zendaya’s film has been in the news due to its eroticism and romance. The film follows the actress as a former tennis player who is caught in a battle between her husband and a former lover, who will be facing each other on the court. One scene in particular seems to have caught the attention of fans as it bears resemblance to a popular scene in Timothée Chalamet’s Call Me By Your Name.

7 Fois
7 Fois. Seven times. That’s how often, according to research, an abused child has to ask for help before anyone intervenes. How does it happen that people turn away, or fail to pay attention, so often? Christine Wiederkehr’s intense 16 minute film tells the story of one boy, Elio (Vidal Arzoni), who is persuaded to share his secrets with a young woman (Luna Wedler) whom he meets whilst waiting for his tutor – but will she take him seriously?
The film begins when Elio is at home, chasing a wasp around the kitchen, waiting for his mother to return from her night shift. I asked Christine why she chose to start there and to take her time establishing the characters before the main arc of the story gets going.
“I thought the context is quite important, because abuse is always happening in a power relationship,” she says. “And I thought.

While signs are pointing to the SAG-AFTRA strike potentially coming to a close in the near future, the fallout is still pushing the release dates of many projects. Universal and Dreamworks Animations live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon had been set for a March 14, 2025 release, but it was announced today that it has been pushed back to June 13, 2025.
Production on the live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie was expected to begin this summer but obviously wasn’t able to get started due to the strike, so it’s no surprise that the release was pushed. Dean DeBlois, who wrote and directed all three of the animated movies, will return to write, direct, and produce the live-action movie. It was announced earlier this year that Mason Thames (The Black Phone) would star as Hiccup alongside Nico Parker (The Last of Us) as Astrid. Jay Baruchel voiced Hiccup in the animated movie,...

Hot on the heels of Warner Bros. moving Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom to Friday, December 22, 2023, and Robert De Niro’s Alto Knights to later in 2024, Disney is doing its version of the release date shuffle for two of its upcoming releases. Additionally, Searchlight is no longer opening Magazine Dreams, starring Jonathan Majors, on December 8. Majors faces a trial date on November 29, 2023, for a domestic violence case involving his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari.
Meanwhile, Disney will push its live-action adaptation of Snow White from March 22, 2024, to March 21, 2025, with Disney/Pixar’s Elio going from March 1, 2024, to June 13, 2025. The shuffle stems from uncertainty about the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.
Other projects jumping ship include an untitled Disney feature moving from February 14, 2024, to April 5, 2024. Disney is also pulling The Bikeriders from its December 1 theatrical release because Queen B, Beyonce, is dropping a concert film in theaters, and, of course, the actors’ strike.

Get ready for the dominoes to start falling in earnest as studios race to rearrange their 2024 theatrical release calendars amid the ongoing actors’ strike.
Disney on Friday announced it is delaying the release of its live-action Snow White movie starring Rachel Zegler by a year from March 22, 2024 to March 21, 2025. The film, which is officially titled Disney’s Snow White, is among the studio’s biggest offerings of the year, and is one of the anchors of its spring slate.
The other spring anchor is Pixar’s March animated tentpole Elio, which is being pushed back by more than a year, from March 1, 2024 to June 13, 2025.
In a move unrelated to the strike, Disney and Searchlight have removed Magazine Dreams starring Jonathan Majors from the December 2023 calendar. The decision was widely expected due to Majors’ legal troubles. He is due to stand trial Nov. 29 in New York for misdemeanor harassment and assault charges.

As visions of various 21st-century promises and perils alike converge upon us at once — from space travel to possible extraterrestrial contact to artificial intelligence to the looming societal threat posed by climate change — the science fiction genre finds itself at arguably its most urgent and crucial point in history. In recent years, the movies, in particular, have seen a kind of artistic renaissance for the genre, with various first-rate auteurs contemplating our technological future in works ranging from the moving to the thought-provoking to the brilliantly satirical.
In 2024, that renaissance will continue at full steam. The next year in film will bring us an incredibly vast and diverse range of new sci-fi flicks, whether coming from old savants like Bong Joon-ho, Denis Villeneuve, and Alex Garland, or genre debutants like Joshua Oppenheimer, Bruno Dumont, and even Francis Ford Coppola. Here, we've compiled a list of 19 upcoming science fiction films to...

Emma Stone is a woman who gets to start from scratch in Yorgos Lanthimos’ unbound and astonishing new feature, “Poor Things.” For most of us, life is comprised of knowledge and circumstance that take decades to accumulate until we die. For Stone’s Bella Baxter, that process happens in very fast motion, thanks to a reanimating procedure that finds her, once a dead woman floating in a river, now alive again with her unborn child’s brain inside her head.
Bella, née Victoria, is a living breathing tabula rasa unfettered by societal pressures, propriety, or niceties. And Stone, in her most brazenly weird performance to date, plays her like a toddler taking its first steps and saying its first words — until by the end of “Poor Things...

For adults, the life of a modern teenager can seem profoundly unfathomable. Part of this is due to the rapidly accumulating cognitive fog that, for the grown-up brain, tends to obscure any true experiential memory of youth—a phenomenon constant throughout generations. But! An even bigger part of said profound unfathomability is, of course, the technology so closely interwoven with kids’ lives in the 21st century. Tech that can be used to a variety of ends good and bad, but most importantly to create.
Contained within each smartphone is a pre-production office, film crew, post house, advertising agency and multinational distributor. All this, in the hands of a generation that understands screens and the language visual digital expression as a rich and fully integrated part of daily life. Combine that intuition with a young person’s energy, imagination and earnest need for self-expression and you have the perfect alchemical formula for a natural-born filmmaker.

Episode nine, “I Must Go in Now For the Fog is Rising,” begins with Bottles (Alex Barone) and Guero (Andrew Jacobs) silent as they ride back to town in the back of a stranger’s pickup truck. Pixar’s first teaser trailer for Elio finds the titular character mistakenly abducted by aliens looking for the leader of Earth. Elio’s just a kid, but now he’s got to step it up and represent all humans in front of the weird assortment of beings who make up the Communiverse.
Yonas Kibreab voices Elio and America Ferrera is Elio’s mom, Olga. Jameela Jamil and Brad Garrett have just been added to the cast as Ambassador Questa and Ambassador Grigon, respectively.
The two-minute teaser arrived along with a poster and two stills from the family-friendly, alien-friendly adventure.
Directed by Adrian Molina (screenwriter / co-director of Coco), the 28th film from Pixar Animation Studios will open in theaters on March 1, 2024.

The team behind “Coco” has a new coming-of-age tearjerker in the works for Pixar. “Elio,” the 28th animated feature from the legendary studio, is directed by Adrian Molina who wrote and co-helmed 2018 Oscar-winning film.
“Elio” is centered around the titular 11-year-old underdog (voiced by Yonas Kibreab), who has an active imagination and is beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from various galaxies. The official synopsis reads: Mistakenly identified as Earth’s ambassador to the rest of the universe, and completely unprepared for that kind of pressure, Elio must form new bonds with eccentric alien lifeforms, survive a series of formidable trials and somehow discover who he is truly meant to be.
America Ferrera voices Elio’s mother Olga, with Jameela Jamil and Brad Garrett cast as intergalactic ambassadors.
In addition to Molina, “Coco” associate producer Mary Alice Drumm also produces “Elio.”

Have you ever wondered if we’re alone in the universe? Evidence suggests life on other planets could exist. Still, we’ve yet to contact beings capable of communicating on a level similar to our native speech patterns. Chances are there’s intelligent life in the infinite that exists beyond our reach. Elio is about to encounter a federation of outer space creatures as a representative of Earth. It’s a big responsibility for such a young person, and Elio’s lie could land Earth in a compromising position in Disney and Pixar‘s Elio teaser trailer.
In today’s Elio teaser trailer, a case of mistaken identity finds a young boy, Elio, being beamed aboard an alien craft and placed before a gathering of creatures from beyond the stars. The aliens think Elio is the ambassador of Earth, but Elio knows better, or does he? Once his survival instinct kicks in,...

"I am the leader of Earth!" Pixar has revealed the first teaser trailer for the next original movie, titled Elio, arriving in theaters in March 2024 next year. This teaser is playing in front of Pixar's Elemental, which opens this weekend. Elio is from one of the co-directors of Coco, Adrian Molina, a story artist who has been working at Pixar ever since Ratatouille years ago - now making his solo directorial debut. The film is about a young kid named Elio who struggles to fit in until he is transported by aliens and becomes the chosen one to be Earth's Galactic Ambassador. His mother Olga works on a top secret project to decode alien messages. America Ferrera voices Olga Solis and Yonas Kibreab voices Elio. There's tons of footage in this teaser, and a look at many funky alien creatures from this "Communiverse". I'm sold! More Pixar sci-fi? Yes, please.

Series star Jd Pardo makes his directorial debut with FX’s Mayans M.C. season five episode four, “I See the Black Light.”
Ez’s betting the Mayans M.C. Santo Padre’s future on taking over the Lobos New Generation’s drug business in the U.S., and he trades away the 12 crates of stolen guns for supplies to make more heroin. His men are frustrated and upset by the deal, and Ez reminds them that without the pipeline, the war will be lost no matter how many guns they have in their possession.
Hank (Frankie Loyal) informs Ez, Angel (Clayton Cardenas), and Bishop (Michael Irby) – the inner circle – that Creeper told him there’s a rat in the clubhouse. Someone in jail told Creeper, and Creeper believes it. So does Hank.

As news about the 2023 Cannes lineup begins to trickle in, American audiences are finally getting a chance to catch up on some of the films that played at last year’s festival. Felix van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch’s “The Eight Mountains” made waves when it competed for the Palme d’Or and won the Prix Jury prize in 2022, and now the film is just weeks away from premiering at arthouses in New York and Los Angeles.
The film tells the story of a close relationship between two young Italian boys who spent their childhoods together in a mountain village before going in different directions. At Cannes, critics praised the film’s attention to detail and the way it used elements of nature to conjure the feelings of magic that childhood friendships can create.

“Netflix and chill.” Future pop culture historians will likely look back and chuckle at that turn of phrase, which in the 2010s signaled a hefty technological shift from the days of “we can put on records.” It also represents the moment when Netflix dominated the zeitgeist for years. It’s an open question whether that dominance will continue after next month since the most popular streaming service is doing away with its password sharing capabilities. But in the meantime, let’s all “Netflix and chill” one last time, especially with Valentine’s Day around the corner.

Dakota Johnson walked out on a big stage inside Park City’s Basin Recreation Fieldhouse on Thursday evening, immediately surveyed the massive scene with hundreds of seated guests (including Sundance insiders, auteurs and a few movie stars) and feigned shock.

Los Angeles, Jan 20 (Ians) ‘Fifty Shades’ star Dakota Johnson started off the 2023 Sundance Film Festival with a laugh in her role as a presenter at the inaugural ‘A Taste of Sundance’ dinner.
The actress joked that she was offered the role of the peach in Luca Guadagnino’s Oscar-winning indie ‘Call Me by Your Name’, but she had to turn it down due to scheduling conflicts, reports ‘Variety’.
“Thank god, though,” she said. “I would have been another woman that Armie Hammer would have tried to eat.”
Johnson praised Guadagnino as a lover of cinema (and Prada) as she presented him with the international icon award. She starred in his remake of “Suspiria,” but her joke about Hammer made the room gasp and giggle.
As per ‘Variety’, Hammer, who starred alongside Timothee Chalamet in ‘Call Me by Your Name’, has been accused of having cannibalistic fetishes, sexual assault and abusive behaviour by extramarital partners.

On the set of “Call Me by Your Name,” director Luca Guadagnino gave his star Timothée Chalamet a suggestion. He wanted Chalamet to use his nose to convey the obsession his character, Elio, has with the older grad student, Oliver (Armie Hammer), who’s staying with Elio’s parents in Italy for the summer. “For Elio to try to smell what the scent of Oliver was in his clothing was a way to possess him, to own him, to really imprint Oliver on himself, the way in which you do when you are obsessed with someone and you really want to seduce that person,” Guadagnino said during a recent interview with IndieWire.
The decision of how to play this moment of solitude and abandon was left to Chalamet. “We did [the scene] four different ways that were all radically different and all on scales of physical expression — and everything felt gravy, I...

Unless you've been living off the grid for the last couple of years, you've no doubt heard of Timothée Chalamet. The young actor who skyrocketed to fangirl levels of fame after starring in director Luca Guadagnino's "Call Me by Your Name" is definitely on his way to becoming a household name. He is one of the youngest people to ever be nominated in the Best Actor category at the Academy Awards — an honor he received for his portrayal of the precocious Elio in the aforementioned "Call Me by Your Name" — and he's since taken on roles in some of the biggest films to come out in the last few years.
Next year, Chalamet is set to reprise his role as Paul Atreides in "Dune: Part 2," as well as take on the role of a young Willy Wonka in Paul King's aptly titled "Wonka." This year sees only...

Luca Guadagnino is still hoping for a “Call Me By Your Name” sequel with the original cast of characters — and possibly the original cast as well.
Director Guadagnino has voiced his desire for a follow-up film about the affair between Oliver (Hammer) and Elio (Timothée Chalamet). “Call Me By Your Name” premiered at 2017 Sundance and went on to land four Oscar nominations, including a Best Adapted Screenplay win.
“I would love to make a second and third and fourth chapter of all my movies,” Guadagnino said in a Variety cover story. “Why? Because I truly love the actors I work with, so I want to repeat the joy of doing what we did together.”
Yet a possible sequel was shelved after a series of abuse allegations against Hammer went public in 2021.

Timothée Chalamet has been on a wilder world tour than most rock stars.
Between shooting “Dune: Part Two” in Budapest and “Wonka” in London and the cannibal romance “Bones and All” in Ohio, he’s hardly had time to sleep in his own bed. “We did the ‘French Dispatch’ premiere in Cannes,” he says about the debut of the Wes Anderson comedy in the south of France two summers ago, where he walked the red carpet in a silver suit. “And then I was immediately doing the vocal and dance training at Leavesden” — to take on the role of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka — “which was wonderful, because I went from playing a disenfranchised cannibal on the outskirts of American society in the ’80s to a gifted young chocolatier and now a space prophet.”

The clouds of worry seem to be hovering over everything related to ‘Game of Thrones’. After fans complained of dimly-lit scenes in episode seven of the prequel series, ‘House of the Dragon’, they are now boycotting the bestselling fantasy author and ‘House of the Dragon’ executive producer George R.R. Martin’s upcoming book, reports Variety.
Martin is caught in the crossfire of the heated battle over inclusive casting and some of his fans are calling for a boycott of his upcoming book due to comments by its co-authors.
According to Variety, ‘The Rise of the Dragon: An Illustrated History of the Targaryen Dynasty, Volume One’ is being touted as a “deluxe reference book” for those itching to learn more about Westeros’ most powerful family.
When Martin publicised it on social media last week, thousands of fans responded in outrage, many calling out the problematic behaviour and “history of racism” of his coauthors,...

Five years on, it's easy to take for granted what an immediate tectonic shift "Call Me by Your Name" represented for queer, romantic, and contemporary cinema. It's one thing for a film to tell a love story between two men as sensitively and perceptively as it did, capturing every one of its microscopic inner movements and honoring their cumulative enormity, with both parties allowed to come alive so thoroughly as characters. In countless different ways, "Call Me by Your Name" is a wholly unique film, and — as its rabid fans know well — the most reliable way to recapture its magic is to watch it again and again. Existing as it does as...

This article contains light spoilers for House of the Dragon episode 6 and George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.
Midway through House of the Dragon episode 6 “The Princess and the Queen,” King Viserys I (Paddy Considine) gathers his Small Council together to talk about the important political issues of the day. On the docket, as it always seems to be, is a bit of drama in the Riverlands. House Bracken and House Blackwood are at each other’s throats again and the dominant house in the region, House Tully, has requested the Iron Throne’s help in settling the matter.
This scene serves as an important development in Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and Queen Alicent Hightower’s (Olivia Cooke) evolving hostilities. For the first time viewers get to see how both rivals have differing opinions on how to best govern the realm. Beyond just that, however, the scene also serves...
