Eugene Mirman
‘It Started as a Joke’ Review: A Sweet Little Doc About Finding Catharsis Through Comedy — SXSW
Eugene Mirman
Eugene Mirman — a fixture of the comedy world, but known to general audiences as the voice of Gene Belcher on “Bob’s Burgers” — has always had a very particular vision of what comedy can be. A warm and whimsical sort whose jokes (and prop-heavy stand-up) tend to poke fun at the insistent seriousness of being alive, Mirman is the kind of guy who can find humor in just about anything.

In anything, that is, except for stuffy comedy festivals that function as gatekeepers, and strangle their comics into serving up laughs on an assembly line. So, after laughing with his friends about launching a festival of their own, Mirman decided to produce his own punchline. And lo, in 2008, the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival was born at the Bell House in Gowanus.

Interview, Audio: Actress Jenny Slate Answers the Call in ‘Landline’
Chicago – Jenny Slate keeps getting more high profile, both in voiceover work (“The Secret Life of Pets”) and as an actress. Her latest film is “Landline,” her second with director Gillian Robespierre. In the film, Slate portrays an engaged-to-be-married “adult” who is having trouble coming to terms with her life.

“Landline” is set in 1990s New York City, just before the tech/mobile phone boom and the loss of grit in the Big Apple. Based on the growing-up experiences of Gillian Robespierre and co-writer Elisabeth Holm, the story is about transitions… Slate’s character to adulthood, the last days of being a teenager for her sister Ali (Abby Quinn) and the dissolution of their parent’s marriage (as portrayed by Edie Falco and John Turturro). It has a bit of a “slamming doors” edge to it, as misunderstandings and family connections blend into a very human story. Slate and Robespierre...

Entertainment News: ‘Mr. Warmth’ Don Rickles Dies at 90
Los Angeles – With the flourish of trumpets in “The Bullfighter’s Song,” a pugnacious man would strut on stage and launch a volley of hilarious insults on some unsuspecting targets. That act was Don Rickles, whose show business nicknames included “The King of Zing,” “The Merchant of Venom” and the magnificently ironic “Mr. Warmth.” Rickles died in Los Angeles on April 6th, 2017. He was 90.

In his early career, Rickles was a throwback to the cocktail and burlesque joints of the 1950s and ‘60s, where a burgeoning stand up comic would do anything to engage the audience and keep a gig. With a quick wit and rat-a-tat delivery, Rickles developed a persona that would keep him working virtually all the way to the end. He went from the “Rat Pack” era, through comedy roasts of the 1970s, to the voice of Mr. Potato Head in the “Toy Story” series, and never...

Entertainment News: ‘La La Land’ Sweeps 7 Categories at 2017 Golden Globe Awards
Chicago – It was a musical-oriented, high octane night at the 74th Golden Globe Awards on January 8th, 2017. Hosted by Jimmy Fallon of NBC-tv’s “The Tonight Show,” the Globes celebrated the best in TV and film in 2016, and selected Best Pictures “La La Land” (Comedy/Musical) and “Moonlight” (Drama), and honored the Best TV Shows with “Atlanta” (Comedy, FX) and “The Crown” (Drama, Netflix). “La La Land” broke the record for the most Golden Globes in one night, sweeping all seven of the categories the musical film was nominated in.

In the film actor and actress categories, the two big surprises were in the Best Actress Drama category, as Isabelle Huppert took home the Globe for “Elle” (a critically acclaimed but little seen French film) over the favored Natalie Portman for “Jackie,” and Aaron Taylor-Johnson won Best Supporting Actor for “Nocturnal Animals,” besting four higher profile performances. In the Comedy/Musical Best Actress category,...

Interview: Dave Franco is Making Magic in ‘Now You See Me 2’
Chicago – Comedy is what makes Dave Franco tick, and recently he’s taken on some prime funny roles in “Neighbors” and “Unfinished Business.” He also was in the very successful “Now You See Me” in 2013, playing a rogue street magician. The sequel was inevitable, and Franco will reprise his role in “Now You See Me 2.”

The sequel reunites the all-star cast, including Mark Ruffalo, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine. Adding to that mix is Daniel “Harry Potter” Radcliffe – portraying a bit of a villain – and Lizzy Caplan, who replaces Isla Fisher from the first film as a female magician. This time the act known as the “Four Horseman” are underground, and it takes a direct challenge to their reputation to get them to emerge again, with China and London among the exotic locations.

It’s All in the Cards: Dave Franco in ‘Now You See Me 2...

Entertainment News: Film, TV Star & Oscar Winner Patty Duke Dies at 69
Coeur D’Alene, Idaho – She was a lesson in duality. One of her most famous roles was as “identical cousins” on “The Patty Duke Show,” and Anna Marie “Patty” Duke also made public her fight with bipolar disorder. She was also a talented actress, winning an Oscar as teenager for “The Miracle Worker.” Ms. Duke passed away on March 29th, 2016, at the age of 69, at her home in Idaho.

Anna Marie Duke (her friends call her “Anna”) became Patty Duke when she was only eight years old. She went on to fame in the role of Helen Keller in the original 1959-61 Broadway run of “The Miracle Worker,” co-starring Anne Bancroft as Annie Sullivan. The film version (1962) garnered Duke the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, the youngest to ever win at the time at age 16. The next year she starred in “The Patty Duke Show,” with its familiar theme song beginning...

Nominations For The 68th Annual Writers Guild Of America Awards
The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.

Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

Best of Late Night TV: Taraji P. Henson's 'Fast Family Feud,' Kelly Clarkson Sings Tinder Profiles
If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

On Monday night, Josh Groban sang Donald Trump tweets. Tuesday night, Kelly Clarkson sang real Tinder profiles on "Jimmy Kimmel Live." The original "American Idol" winner can sing the heck out of anything, and she really Sold those wacky profiles. (Go for the girl who loves her hairless cat, baking cookies, and smoking blunts!) Over on "The Tonight Show," Taraji P. Henson and Jimmy Fallon played a crazy game of "Fast Family Feud." The "Empire" star got a little buzzer-happy -- she was happy in general and very energetic. Love her answers. And remember, hide the drugs when guests come over! (Someone tell that Tinder girl who loves smoking blunts.

Exclusive Portraits: Brad Garrett of ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’
Chicago – The six foot, eight inch Brad Garrett is used to towering over the competition, but it is his comedic chops that got him the part of Robert Barone in the popular sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond.” Garrett was at Hollywood Palms Cinema, on behalf of Anderson’s Bookshop, both in Naperville, Ill., to promote his new book, “When the Balls Drop.”

Garrett was born Brad H. Gerstenfeld in Woodland Hills, California. He attended UCLA, but dropped out to pursue a comedy career. West End (2013)
Bradley Cooper & ‘The Elephant Man’ Are London-Bound
West End (2013)
Exclusive: Bradley Cooper may have been snubbed by the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild, but Broadway and the West End love him. When his lauded performance as John Merrick, Aka the Elephant Man, completes its limited run at the Booth Theatre on February 22, Cooper and the rest of the show’s accomplished cast will get a few weeks off before reuniting for a 12-week run in London that will begin, two production sources tell me, in April.

The producers—including both the Shubert and Nederlander theater-owning organizations, along with (take a deep breath) Terry Allen Kramer, Catherine Adler, Roger Berlind, Caiola Productions, Patrick Catullo, Larry Hirschhorn, Jeffrey Finn Productions, Van Kaplan, Edward M. Kaufmann, Hal Luftig, Arielle Tepper Madover, Peter May, Stephanie P. McClelland, Douglas Smith, Jonathan M. Tisch and Scott & Brian Zeilinger—haven’t closed a deal on a West End house as yet, but they’re about to.

New York City – There are legends, and then there is Joan Rivers. The comedian and show business survivor had a life journey as an influential star from the 1960s all the way to the end of her life. Joan Rivers died on September 4th, 2014, in New York City after suffering respiratory failure last weekend.

Joan Alexandra Molinsky was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate from Barnard College. As she developed her comic act, her agent at the time – Tony Rivers – suggested a name change, so Joan took his last name as hers. She was fired by Rivers as a result. Her training in comedy included a seven-month stint at The Second City in Chicago, but she got her feet wet in the comedy clubs in New York City in the 1960s, which included fellow comedy performers like George Carlin,...

This Should Make Fans Of 'The Wire' Happy
Jimmy Fallon in Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (2009)
"Night News Now" returned to "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" on Monday and it didn't fail to delight. From "Late Night" writer Patrick Borelli's weatherman to the "Poehler" of the day, it was rapid fire perfection as always. But Isiah Whitlock Jr., Senator Clay Davis from "The Wire", stole the show as a lying sports anchor.

This is the way want to get all of our Ncaa news from now on.
