Exclusive: Republic Pictures has snapped up rights to The Image of You, a recently wrapped thriller starring Sasha Pieterse (Pretty Little Liars) in dual roles. Pic is set for release via Paramount Global Content Distribution at a date that hasn’t been disclosed.
Parker Young (United States of Al), Nestor Carbonell (The Morning Show), Michele Nordin (Justified) and Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino (Shining Vale) also star in the film from Mpca — an adaptation of the same-name novel from UK-based bestseller Adele Parks MBE, which Jeff Fisher (Killer Movie) directs from a script by Chris Sivertson (Monstrous).
The first project to emerge from a multi-picture deal between Mpca and Parks, The Image of You has Pieterse playing identical twins Anna and Zoe, who share a bond so close that nothing — and no one — can tear them apart. While Anna is romantic and trusting, her sister Zoe is daring and dangerous.

“Ivy and Bean” director Elissa Down gushed over working with “Modern Family” star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, describing him as her “spirit animal,” at the film’s premiere in Los Angeles on Monday.
“We were shooting [during] a heat wave in Canada. The set was hot, but [Jesse] wasn’t waiting in his trailer — he came straight in and he goes, ‘I’ve got a joke to pitch,'” Down told Variety on the red carpet at Harmony Gold. “He just loves improvisation and he was such a generous actor.”
Based on the children’s book series by Annie Barrows, the upcoming film trilogy follows the adventures of unlikely best friends Ivy (Keslee Blalock) and Bean (Madison Skye Validum), from hunting down ghosts to enrolling in dance lessons. Ferguson plays ballet teacher Monsieur Joy in the third installment, “Ivy and Bean: Doomed to Dance.”

It's adapted from the beloved, best-selling book series of the same name by Annie Barrows and Sophie Blackall. Two unlikely friends, the loud and fearless Bean, and the thoughtful and quiet Ivy – they discover that an adventure can reveal that even seemingly different people can become the best of friends. "Each girl thinks the other one is weird. Each girl thinks she could never be friends with the other. But sometimes opposites can become the best of friends… because they're opposites!" All three movies will be released on the same day and feature back-to-back stories, based on the first three books in the series. Mike Newell is a director I bring up far more than one might imagine given how widely underappreciated he seems to be. Though he may always be best known for his films that – made a dent in the overall cultural awareness (Four Weddings and a Funeral), managed a certain cult following (Into the West), involve young wizards (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), or capitalize on their cast (Donnie Brasco), much of his best work remains virtually unseen. Whether it’s The Good Father, Enchanted April,, or An Awfully Big Adventure, to name only a few, much of his best work is all but unknown outside the circles of the most devout cinephiles. Even some of the more recognizable efforts that are perhaps avoided with good reason – Pushing Tin, Mona Lisa Smile, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time – are difficult to fault in terms of their direction, and...

Lily James leads a cosy tale about a writer visiting a book club in the Channel Islands
This film’s semi-masticated mouthful of a title is a useful flag. Some will find the chintzy fussiness of it insufferable. To those people I say, trust your instincts. This film is not for you. Others, evidently individuals blessed with a higher tolerance of whimsy than I could ever dream of, will forgive the unwieldy word soup. But even fans of the source novel, by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows, might struggle with this photogenic but laboured adaptation.
The acting style is in large print; the plodding storytelling relies on large chunks of exposition. And while the Guernsey tourist board couldn’t hope for a better advertisement (the fact that it was largely shot in Cornwall and Devon notwithstanding), the growing passion between writer Juliet Ashton (Lily James) and Guernsey pig farmer...

While many readers from around the world feel a certain affinity to The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society, nervous about seeing how it’s been adapted for the big screen – nobody will feel that more than the novel’s co-author Annie Barrows, who we had the pleasure of meeting to celebrate the release of this production.
We ask Barrows about the importance in delving into the wartime setting from a female perspective, while also lingering on the notion of hope, and not death. She also tells us how she can’t help but be precious over the material she co-penned with her aunt Mary Ann Shaffer, and just how involved she was, if at all, during the film’s shoot.
She goes on to discuss her own passions in life, the last good book she read, and how she can struggle to view other pieces of literature without having her author’s hat on.

If your first instinct upon seeing the title “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” is to say, “Well, that’s a mouthful,” rest assured that Mike Newell’s film has you covered, for a secondary character does the very same. Indeed, pretty much everyone in this crumbly oatmeal biscuit of a movie does and says exactly what you’d expect of them: based not on the logic of real life, of course, but the cozy conventions of umpteen twee heritage Britpics before it. For Sunday-afternoon comfort-viewing purposes, it’s no problem that “Guernsey” — which follows the post-wwii escapades of a winsome London writer (Lily James) on the eponymous isle — doesn’t stray from its inevitable course as a town-versus-country love triangle. That it offers no surprises as a nominal wartime mystery, however, is rather more bothersome, particularly as what should be a perky trifle trudges past the two-hour mark.

Mike Newell made his name with a story of lovable English eccentrics in Four Weddings and a Funeral, and his latest mines a familiar seam of hot-toddy Britannia. With a commission from The Times to write about reading, Juliet decides to visit Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands invaded by the Germans during the war, after receiving a letter from a dishy pig...

Few would argue that Rosamund Pike stole the show in David Fincher’s psychological thriller Gone Girl, portraying an unhinged sociopath that still sends shivers down our spines to this day. Imagine our disappointment, then, when the Oscar-nominated actress followed up Fincher’s opus with middling thriller Return To Sender.

Actress Kate Winslet will have to wait another year to reunite with her Hamlet co-star Kenneth Branagh - their forthcoming war tale has been postponed until next year.
The Titanic beauty was due to begin shooting actor/director Branagh's next film, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, this spring, but the project has been delayed due to "continued casting and timing issues", according to a representative for Guernsey's Commerce and Employment Department.
And the movie's creative producer Paula Mazur is convinced the postponed schedule will work in the crew's favour.
She says, "It really is important to get the right cast on board... It (the delay) will also allow for the shoot to take place when the wild flowers and vegetation are at their best in Guernsey, which personally was my ultimate goal."
The movie is based on Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows' bestselling 2008 book, about a group of Guernsey islanders who outsmarted their German occupiers during World War Two.
Winslet will play a modern-day magazine columnist who uncovers evidence of the book club the locals set up amid the chaos of war.

It doesn’t get much more British than this: Kate Winslet and Kenneth Branagh are making a movie called The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. (At least that’s the title until somebody renames it Taters!: A Love Story) A rep for Fox 2000 confirms that Branagh will direct the whimsical drama —based on the 2008 best-selling novel by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows — about a British writer (Winslet) who travels to the remote island of Guernsey after WWII to learn about how a book club helped the islanders weather the war. Don Roos (Marley & Me, Bounce) is...

After successfully tackling new terrain by helming the big budget superhero adventure Thor, actor/writer/director Kenneth Branagh will return to his comfort zone of period-piece adaptations with the romantic drama The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, based on the New Yorks Times Bestselling novel by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. Set in 1946, amidst the aftermath of the final bloody battles of World War II, the story centers on ambitious journalist Juliet Ashton, who finds the inspiration for her next book in a curious letter from a stranger who lives on the small island of Guernsey. He tells her of his simple village off the coast of Normandy, and how he and his neighbors survived.and even thrived.in spite of Nazi-German Occupation. Soon, more letters from Guernsey arrive, and Ashton becomes enchanted with their tales of Guernsey's Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, an awkward alibi...

What makes Kenneth Branagh so unique in Hollywood is that he doubles as a actor and a director. He’s one of the few that can do well in both. Now the actor and sometimes director will reunite with one of his Hamlet co-stars for World War II drama. According to Variety, Branagh will reunite with Kate Winslet for an adaptation of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, a 2008 novel written by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. The trade adds that the filmmaker was attached to direct the project last August. The movie will follow an author swarmed by letters from her once-German-occupied British island in the aftermath of World War II.
Winslet will play as a magazine columnist who exchanges letters with a man from Guernesy and learns how islanders used a book during the war as a cover to get the better off the Nazi Occupiers.

Over a decade ago, before director Kenneth Branagh took on the blockbuster comic book film Thor, he was at the helm of an adaptation of Hamlet in which he also played the titular Shakespearean character. Now the director will reunite with another star from the tragedy as Variety reports Kate Winslet has joined the adaptation of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, a 2008 novel written by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows which Branagh was attached to direct last August. It follows an author swarmed by letters from her once-German-occupied British island in the aftermath of World War II. Winslet is playing a magazine columnist who enters into a correspondence with a man from Guernsey, and learns how the islanders used a book group during the war as cover to outwit their German occupiers. Captivated by their stories of the occupation, and how the books came to influence...

Save for a few exceptions here or there, I don’t normally pay a lot of attention to what roles an actor ends up taking — unless they’re crashing and burning, a la Matthew McConaughey a couple of years ago. But Kate Winslet — thanks to, of course, being a terrific actress who almost never makes a bad choice — is one of those exceptions.
Hence my interest in Variety‘s story, which tells us that she’ll star for Kenneth Branagh in Fox 2000′s romance, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. The story, based on the novel by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows — and adapted for the screen by Don Roos — is set in post-wwii London and centers on “a magazine columnist who enters into a correspondence with a man from Guernsey, and learns how the islanders used a book group during the war as cover to outwit their German occupiers.

After Kenneth Branagh walked away from the chance to helm Thor 2 for Marvel Studios, most speculated that he.d gravitate toward something smaller, more intimate, and character driven in an effort to cleanse his palette of Norse mythology and celestial special effects. Those people were right. Variety reports that Branagh is contemplating The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, a romance that takes place immediately after WWII and is set both in London and on the island of Guernsey. Don Roos (Bounce, Marley & Me) is writing the adaptation of a New York Times bestseller that was penned by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer. The film has been set up at Fox 2000. Branagh has previosuly proven to be comfortable shifting between larger-budgeted productions (usually Shakespeare) and smaller-scale ensemble pieces, such as when he went from Henry V to the excellent mystery Dead Again, or from the self-contained Sleuth...

Now that he’s decided to skip the chance to direct the Thor follow-up, Kenneth Branagh is a man looking for a new helming assignment. And if Fox 2000 has its way, he’ll take up the megaphone for The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society. It sounds about as far away from the adventures of Asgard as you can get (we wonder if the rainbow bridge can reach Guernsey), but it should be a change of pace for Branagh after tackling the superhero saga.Dan Roos wrote the script, adapted from Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer’s bestseller, which follows a blossoming postal relationship between a writer in London and a resident of the island who relates the tale of the titular society, one used as a cover to help its members undermine the German occupation during World War Two.But switching back to Branagh’s previous gig for a moment…...

Kenneth Branagh shocked superhero fans - as well as actor Chris Hemsworth - when he walked away from Marvel after directing its first Thor film.
It appears the thought of another long period at the helm of an FX-heavy blockbuster was too much and so Branagh amicably declined to be involved in the planned sequel.
We've all been wondering what he will do next, and it turns out that he is considering directing another film but this time on a smaller and more grounded scale.
Although I enjoyed Thor, I felt Branagh's influence was often lost beneath the need for visual spectacle and the overriding Marvel formula, where the demand for Avengers links often came at the expense of heart and soul.
But his next project may allow him more substance and leeway. Variety is reporting that the filmmaker has his eye on 20th Century Fox's adaptation of the New...

Kenneth Branagh may have found his first directing gig since Thor. Variety reports that 20th Century Fox is circling the director to helm The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Dan Roos penned the script for the film, which will be produced by Paula Mazur and Mitchell Kaplan.
The film is based on the Publishers Weekly and New York Times bestseller by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer. Tale has been described "as a love story set in London and on the island of Guernsey shortly after WWII." Branagh is great with directing historical period films, so this is a great news. He will next be seen on the big screen as Sir Laurence Olivier in My Week With Marilyn.
I would've loved to see him direct the Thor sequel, but am content known that he will be directing a project like this. What are your thoughts?
