Could an upset be brewing on Season 21 of “American Idol”? All year fans have been forecasting Iam Tongi would take home the top prize, but he may not be the sure bet we’ve assumed. This season closely resembles a similar lineup up finalists from Season 17 when 18-year old country crooner Laine Hardy took down fan favorite Alejandro Aranda, who, like Iam, had become a viral sensation since his first audition.
This time around it’s 18-year old Mississippi native Colin Stough who has progressively grown his fanbase each week, delivering honky-tonk renditions of some of music’s most popular tunes. Like Laine, he was barely a blip on viewers’ radar in early rounds, but as judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie have pointed out, his star continues to rise.

(Christopher Willard/ABC) Adam Lambert Because of all the success he’s achieved, there are thousands of people who believe Adam Lambert was an American Idol champion. In reality, he was runner-up to Kris Allen in the show’s eighth season. But, even without the win, the show acted as a huge springboard for Lambert’s musical aspirations. In the 15 years since then, he’s released five solo albums and gone out on the road several times as the vocalist for the legendary band Queen.. All in all, he’s had a great run in the music business so far, and Lambert says that Idol was a great crash course in all of the things he needed to know to succeed. When people think of American Idol, they often think of names like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Adam Lambert, Katharine McPhee, and others. Interestingly, not all of these well-known contestants actually won the competition. For some, the exposure from Idol was enough to skyrocket their careers even higher than those of the people who took home the grand prize. Here are eight American Idol contestants who became more successful than the winners of their seasons.

Hudson is among the most famous American Idol contestants, and she wasn’t even a Top 3 finalist. She was eliminated from the Top 7 during season 3. Fantasia Burrino later won the season.

Last year, a gaming live-streamer named Normandy Vamos auditioned for American Idol Season 20. She left an impression on judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan with her unique fashion sense and high-pitched speaking voice that changed into a deep, soulful sound as she sang. Fourteen years ago during the eighth season of Fox’s “American Idol,” Simon Cowell was one of the people who judged aspiring singer Adam Lambert on a weekly basis. Even though Simon critiqued Adam early on for being too theatrical, Simon soon became one of his biggest supporters. “Over the entire season, you’ve been one of the best, most original contestants we’ve ever had on the show,” the British judge declared during that show’s 2009 finale. “The hope and whole idea of a show like this is to find a worldwide star, and I truly believe we’ve found that in you.”
Flash-forward to 2023, and the two popular personalities reunited during the season finale of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent: All-Stars.” Simon was seated at the judges’ desk (next to Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel), while Adam was up on the big stage performing his version of “Chandelier...

Adam Lambert made headlines recently for slamming a casting rumor that “The White Lotus” star Theo James was circling the role of George Michael in a biopic about the pop music icon. Not so fast. Speaking at the Variety Studio presented by Audible at Sundance, Lambert said he was mostly being sarcastic and that it would be “ridiculous” to claim that gay characters can only be played by gay actors.
“My actual comment was a straight actor playing a gay icon. I by no means think that gay characters can only be played by gay actors,” Lambert said. “That would be ridiculous. Case in point: Scoot’s brilliant performance in this film.”
Lambert is at Sundance with the drama “Fairyland,” starring Scoot McNairy as a bohemian father living in 1970s San Francisco. McNairy plays a gay man in the film, and Lambert says his performance is proof that gay characters...

It took a while, but Derek Hough finally has some company and it’s fitting that it’s from his Bff. Thanks to his win on Monday’s Season 31 finale with Charli D’Amelio, Mark Ballas has joined Hough as the only pros with at least three Mirrorball trophies on “Dancing with the Stars.”
Hough, of course, holds the record at six wins, so Ballas still has some ways to go, but this was a big hump to get over as a third win has been elusive for the pros. Before Monday, six pros had been stuck at two victories: Ballas, Cheryl Burke (who retired on the finale), Julianne Hough, Kym Johnson, Peta Murgatroyd and Val Chmerkovskiy. Julianne Hough and Johnson have long left the show, but Ballas, Burke and Chmerkovskiy have frequently made finals over the years only to come up short in the quest for three. Chermkovskiy and his...

Where have you gone, American Idol? A nation turns its lonely eyes to … wait, seriously? You’re still on?
Believe it or not, it’s true. Idol has survived long enough to see its 20th birthday. When it debuted on June 11, 2002, the TV singing contest was the blockbuster that promised to define the new pop-culture era. Like the country it’s named after, American Idol is still technically on the map, but it’s staggering in a punch-drunk haze of crushed dreams and betrayed hopes, and the nagging sense that...

As host Ryan Seacrest noted, William Hung went viral as an “American Idol” contestant long before viral videos were a thing, and so it was fitting Hung returned for the show’s 20th anniversary celebration Monday night.
Hung performed the very song he auditioned with back in Season 3, way back in 2004 — “She Bangs” by Ricky Martin — looking much the same as he did almost two decades ago.
Turns out, Hung is now a motivational speaker. So, Seacrest asked what he tells those who attend his talks.
“I tell people I believe everyone has a right to try something new without being judged or ridiculed,” Hung said to cheers. (You can watch his performance and interview below.)
Hung wasn’t the only face from the “Idol” archives who visited Monday night’s broadcast.

“American Idol” marked its 20th birthday on Monday night with “The Great Idol Reunion,” a one-hour special featuring past “Idol” contestants and judges and celebrating the show’s history, both during its years on Fox and its current home on ABC.
“Tonight we are opening the Idol yearbook,” said host Ryan Seacrest as he revealed the “Idol” VIP area, which included such familiar faces as Tamyra Gray, Pia Toscano, Anthony Federov, Brooke White, Justin Guarini, William Hung, and Seacrest’s unforgettable frosted hair.
Wasting no time getting to Hung, whose name is “synonymous with ‘American Idol,'” noted Seacrest, he returned to the stage to reprise his epic Ricky Martin performance of “She Bangs” as former judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson felt right at home alongside the current panel of Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.
In classic Abdul form, she kicked into Paula-speak, which fans surely fondly remember.

Finishing a distant second place in our poll with 8% of the vote was Season 2’s Clay Aiken, who lost to Ruben Studdard in the closest finale vote in “American Idol” history. Last year’s finalist Alejandro Aranda snagged 6% after losing to country singer Laine Hardy. Katharine McPhee finished in fourth place with 4% of voters who thought she should have defeated Taylor Hicks in Season 5.

“American Idol” may be off the air until early 2020, but that’s not stopping our crack team of reality TV aficionados from discussing the show’s future. In our recent finale video recap, we offer up some constructive criticism for judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. Should this trio return to the judging panel next year for Season 18, there are some things that absolutely, positively need to change. Watch the video below.
See Alejandro Aranda announces post-‘American Idol’ tour schedule and Katy Perry is already begging to ‘be a roadie’
“I do want all three judges to come back, I just feel like they really need to get more constructive and less positive,” I state at the 12:55 minute mark. “I think they’re just so worried about hurting people’s feelings. They just need to get over that. They’re judges. They’re getting paid millions of dollars to do this.

Adam Lambert returned to the American Idol stage to perform Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” alongside Season 18 contestant Dimitrius Graham Sunday.
Though they performed a truncated version of the classic track, Lambert and Graham did not skimp on any of the bombast. The pair traded verses early on while Graham did an excellent job anchoring the famous opera section while receiving an assist from a small choir of back-up singers. With digital fireworks blazing in the background, Lambert and Graham roared through the song’s ending before bringing it to a close with the poignant refrain,...

Season 17 of “American Idol” ended on May 19. Will the new winner enjoy more success than the 2018 champion, Maddie Poppe? After all, she didn’t even get a chance to perform on this year’s finale despite releasing her first album, “Whirlwind,” just two days prior. What a contrast to the early days of the show, when the previous season’s winner was always showcased on the episode that unveiled the new winner of the franchise.
This Emmy-winning reality competition series began in 2002, For more than a decade, it was a ratings powerhouse with many of those winners enjoying some success. The first-ever champ, Kelly Clarkson, has won three Grammys and turned her fame into a string of hit records and an ongoing gig as a judge on the competition, NBC’s’ “The Voice.” And season 4 winner Carrie Underwood has done even better, having sold upwards of records and won a shelf load of music awards.

With Season 17 of “American Idol” coming to a close on May 19 with Alejandro Aranda, Laine Hardy and Madison VanDenburg as the final three, it has a good chance of being considered to be among one of the best seasons ever. But is it The best? That is yet to be determined. Certainly all three contestants have grown as vocalists and entertainers each and every week, especially on Sunday’s second-to-last show. But it is a little too early to see how No. 17 stacks ups with these four stellar seasons from the past.

After a so-so revival last year when ABC took over “American Idol,” most fans are in agreement that the talent on display on Season 17 is a giant leap for singing kind. The show overall seems to be more entertaining. Yes, judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan are never going to be as scathingly funny as Simon Cowell in his snide heyday. But their personalities and musical knowledge complement each other and all three seem quite genuine in their quest to help the contestants to up their games.
Very early in this current edition of the show, the words “best season ever” were uttered. It is all subjective, of course, but with just one more episode and the three-hour finale left, No. 17 could go down in “Idol’ ‘history talent-wise once a winner is crowned. Of course, factoring into that assessment will be the winner’s post-show success as well.

Thanks to the “American Idol” judges using their save, two women still remain in the Top 5 of Season 17: Laci Kaye Booth and Madison VanDenburg. Laci failed to earn enough votes during Sunday’s live Top 6 episode (along with Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon), but Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan opted to save her from elimination at the last moment. Can either Laci or Madison now go on to join the “American Idol” winners list over their three male counterparts Laine Hardy, Alejandro Aranda and Wade Cota? Sound off down in the comments section.

In honor of Adam Lambert‘s return to “American Idol” this Sunday as he coaches the Top 8 contestants on how to properly attack a Queen anthem, here is the performance that would lead to him eventually filling in for the band’s late singer, Freddie Mercury. Yes, the eventual winner Kris Allen gets to warble the first verse of “We Are the Champions,” but the minute that Lambert opens his mouth, he commands the song as his voice takes flight into the heavens.
The curtain then raises and Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor are revealed in a cloud of smoke. The season’s other contestants seem to be hanging about onstage while acting as a chorus of sorts as the audience and judges leap to their feet. But only Lambert seems to feel right at home next to these British rock legends.

Adam Lambert may have lost “American Idol” back in 2009, but he is one of the most successful alumni of the reality TV competition. Along with his solo efforts, he is the frontman for Queen. Kris Allen who?
Ever since I learned that “American Idol” was recruiting Adam Lambert to coach the Top 8 contestants on the art of performing Queen songs on April 28, I’ve been hungry to hear the Season 8 runner-up perform live himself on the show. Yes, he is expected to do so on the finale on May 19. But that is too long to wait.

Ten years ago Adam Lambert took the stage during Top 8 week of “American Idol” and gave a haunting performance of “Mad World” that’s still making fans cry to this day. Adam’s stripped-down rendition of the Tears for Fears song from the April 7, 2009 episode is considered by many to be one of the best in the history of the reality TV show. It helped propel the wide-eyed 27-year-old all the way to second place, where he ultimately lost to Kris Allen. Watch the “American Idol” flashback video above.

Adam Lambert, the only “American Idol” contestant to ever receive a standing ovation from grumpy judge Simon Cowell, will return to the show on April 28 to mentor the Top 8 contestants. If you haven’t guessed already, the runner-up on Season 8 will tutor the hopefuls when they tackle Queen‘s catalog.

This news came straight from Rudi Dolezal, a director behind many of the band’s videos and a close friend of Freddie Mercury. To be very clear: we have no idea whether or not this is true. And even if it is being discussed it doesn’t mean anything will ever happen. But that doesn’t mean we can’t try to imagine what a Bohemian Rhapsody sequel might look like.

Queen drummer Roger Taylor vividly remembers the first time he watched Adam Lambert sing. After weeks and weeks of auditions, live performances, and Katy Perry wardrobe malfunctions, the first winner of the American Idol reboot has been announced. So, who won the reality singing competition in 2018? It was none other than Maddie Poppe! Ryan Seacrest crowned Maddie as judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Katy Perry — and her boyfriend Caleb Lee Hutchinson, who came in second — cheered on. Gabby Barrett came in third in an incredibly close vote. In a twist of fate, Maddie auditioned for The Voice back in 2015, but none of the judges turned their chairs for her during the blind audition. "I was a terrible singer at that song — it was not good," Maddie told local newspaper The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier at the time. "I’m not making excuses, I just wasn’t ready. I’ve changed so much in three years that I’m glad it didn’t work out (on The Voice)." Wig!
