By all accounts, Christopher Reeve was one of the kindest and most giving men in the business, something that so many of his co-stars and friends gave back. For those lucky enough to work alongside him on screens both big and small – even just once – it will always be a special moment. This holds true even in far lesser fare, as Superman III co-star Annette O’Toole remembers just how giving Reeve was even off the set.
Speaking with MovieWeb, Annette O’Toole – who played Clark Kent’s childhood friend Lana Lang – remembered the time that Christopher Reeve took her to a Simon & Garfunkel concert at Wembley Stadium while she was still trying to get acclimated to the environment. “[They] just kind of introduced me to the world as being part of this huge movie. And it was just a wonderful night, and he was so sweet all the time. He couldn...

"The Godfather Part III," "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," "Jaws 3-D," "Superman III" ... there are tons of examples of film trilogies that feature a dramatic drop in quality in their third entries. "Beverly Hills Cop III" definitely belongs on that list; the 1994 stinker, directed by John Landis, plopped Eddie Murphy's beloved fish-out-of-water Detroit cop character Axel Foley back in Beverly Hills, but this time, it takes place largely in a ... theme park. Thanks to scripting issues and scheduling problems, the film also broke up the beloved trio of Murphy, John Ashton, and Judge Reinhold, the latter of whom play Taggart and Rosewood, the Beverly Hills police officers who go from being Axel's pesky babysitters in the first movie to lifelong pals and de facto partners in the second. Ashton dodged a bullet by not appearing in the third film at all, and that movie's lousy script didn't do...

"Paralyzed by his fear of dying, Miles Grissom (Clark Freeman) offers a cash reward to the first person who can show him a ghost, an angel, a demon, or anything to prove the existence of an afterlife. Man of Steel was the movie that propelled Henry Cavill to global popularity, but even though he nailed the role of Superman/Clark Kent, he could not have done some of the emotional scenes without the help of his costars. The actor credits veteran stars Diane Lane and Kevin Costner for helping him out.
Henry Cavill in Man of Steel
The pair portrayed Jonathan and Martha Kent, the adoptive parents of Superman. As someone who has been in the industry longer than Cavill, they understand the difficulty of delivering tricky scenes, so they were both ready to assist the younger star.

Fans have always talked about Henry Cavill’s relationships, but nothing was more controversial than when he dated a teenage university student. He was 32 when he first met Tara King, then a 19-year-old freshman at Bristol University in England.

At the time, Cavill was already known as Superman and had a steady footing in Hollywood. He met the art history student at a London nightclub in 2015. They were also spotted hanging out at a rugby match at Twickenham. It wasn’t until February 2016 when they publicly appeared as a couple at Vanity Fair’s Oscars party.

Superman’s future looks considerably brighter as James Gunn prepares the new version of the DC Universe. Further, even Jack Quaid’s 2023 animated TV series My Adventures With Superman, featured the superhero as a heartfelt and charming one. To be specific, ever since the end of Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel era, the fan-favorite character has witnessed bright and positive days.
Jack Quaid as Hughie Campbell in The Boys
The grim and gritty Superman is now considered a thing of the past. With James Gunn promising to bring a more hopeful Kryptonian, Henry Cavill’s gritty version is now history. However, despite starring as the Last Son of Krypton in the PG-rated 2023 animated TV series, Jack Quaid offered his rare support to Cavill’s grim version of Kal-El. Although he preferred starring as the positive and proactive version, he has nothing against the darker versions of Superman.

We’ve seen a few actors portray Perry White on the big screen, including Jackie Cooper, who played the role in Superman: The Movie, Superman II, Superman III, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. I was a kid just as the drive-in craze was coming to a close. I can recall packing into our giant boat of a Chrysler station wagon and trekking out to see some first-run movies with my family back in the early 80s. I vividly remember seeing The Muppets Take Manhattan, Superman III (which terrified young me to no end), and Return of the Jedi on the massive screens of the Starlight Drive-In that stood for decades after the projectors were shut down and the lot converted into a gigantic swap-meet. Unfortunately, I was far too young to take in the legendary exploitation fare of the period. Sometimes I wish I had been born fifteen or twenty years earlier so I could have experienced the heyday of Aip, New World, and their ilk firsthand, but living through the dawn of the home video boom wasn’t a bad trade off.

The Beatles‘ “Strawberry Fields Forever” is John Lennon’s masterpiece. The Beatle had a hard time remembering the sequence of events that led him to write it. Fascinatingly, Paul McCartney said the tune came out of his rivalry with John — and that it had a special connection to “Penny Lane.”

The book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono features an interview from 1980. In it, John said he wrote The Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields Forever” while he was filming the comedy film How I Won the War. The film was directed by Richard Lester, who also helmed A Hard Day’s Night and Help!, as well as Superman II and Superman III starring Christopher Reeve. Despite John and Lester’s involvement, How I Won the War is not one of The Beatles’ films.

Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.
Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.

Refresh for chart…On the bright side for Independence Day bomb Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, its first five days at the box office of $82M aren’t as bad as Paramount/Skydance’s Terminator Genisys.
That sequel’s launch just prior to July 4, 2015 left a lot of methane in the air with $42.4M in its Wednesday to Sunday. The attempted Arnold Schwarzenegger comeback movie ended its domestic run at $89.7M, and Dial of Destiny will cross that mark before its first week is up.
Comparing July 4th tentpole hits and bombs can be tricky. Since the holiday skips around, sometimes studios launch on a Wednesday, sometimes a Friday so for the box office fanatics, everything is apples-to-oranges. The last time July 4th fell on a Tuesday was 2017 and 2006. In 2017, over the Friday-Tuesday frame, Illumination/Universal’s Despicable Me 3 led with $99M, followed by Sony/MRC’s Baby Driver with $29.97M.

A good franchise is hard to kill. Bad ones, like the seven-film torture device Police Academy, can be even harder to exterminate. But sometimes doomed series are finally put out of their misery. Up on the shelf they go, doomed to a future of languishing on lists like this one.
The murder weapon is usually money. More specifically, the lack thereof. A big enough failure means a franchise won’t get another chance to pull their act together, and the most spectacular bombs get to live on as warnings to future film students. Even more interesting are the ones that aren’t total flops, the movies that maybe made a profit, but one so small or negligible that their studios decided to put that old franchise to bed, anyway. Here are 15 movies that killed their respective franchises for good.

In 1984, Leonard Nimoy boldly went where he had never gone before – into the director’s chair of a feature film. His being allowed to direct Star Trek III: The Search for Spock was part of his deal to return to the franchise, as if they had not allowed him this opportunity, the search for Spock might be ended with them… ya know… not finding him. While critics were cool on the film, audiences and fans liked it enough to make it a considerable financial success, earning $76.5 million domestically – just below the $78 million The Wrath of Khan had made. However, like the previous film, its success was limited to North America, with it only making about $10 million internationally compared to the $20 million Wrath of Khan made. No matter, like its predecessor, it was a significant hit on home video and cable, and soon plans were in the works for a fourth...

While The Beatles are best known for their music, the band also appeared in two movies: A Hard Day’s Night and Help!. Both films are musical comedies that feature the fab four on an adventure bolstered by an excellent soundtrack. Both movies were directed by Richard Lester, who enjoyed a successful film career after directing The Beatles.

The Beatles starred in their first movie, A Hard Day’s Night, in 1964. The Beatles play themselves in the film, and it centers around the band trying to maneuver around a bunch of hijinks before an important TV performance. "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" is finally in theaters, and it's caught in a curious and unenviable position. On the one hand, the original "Shazam!" was always outside of the core "Snyderverse" films in both plot and tone, so it isn't clearly in the crosshairs of James Gunn and Peter Safran's big DC Studios reset. On the other hand, more "Shazam!" hasn't thus far been announced as part of the initial DC Universe slate. It's an ambiguous state that really makes one wonder what the future might hold for the red-suited, lightning-bolt-adorned, non-Flash hero.
At the same time, since "Shazam!" isn't off the table for the new DC movie universe, "Fury of the Gods" does have a pair of post-credits sequences that could have some impact on Gunn and Safran's DC plans (plus a blink-and-you'll-miss-it extra credit detail). Let's look at what they are, what they mean for "Shazam! Fury of the Gods,...

Science fiction TV shows have a shorter shelf life than cryptocurrencies and social media influencers. What gives? It's not that complicated: big budgets + low ratings = cancellation. Hey, those space-age sets and costumes, alien makeup, and CGI aren't cheap. Meanwhile, passionate fans may sign petitions by the thousands, but ratings are what matters, and those fanbases are too small to impress execs trying to court advertisers.
Given the economics of television, it's not shocking TV studios routinely dump pricey sci-fi shows in favor of the newest "Big City Cop Show" procedural. To be honest, it's surprising sci-fi shows get made at all. Yep, it sucks, but that's show business. While it's easy to explain why most sci-fi TV shows get canceled, the reasons for some cancellations are downright baffling. These include sci-fi shows that were dropped despite decent ratings, canned with fully completed seasons, or even dumped after inspiring hunger strikes!

Ryan Reynolds redeemed his superhero credibility with Deadpool, but Green Lantern, in which he starred just five years prior, was a catastrophic flop on both the critical and commercial fronts. Now, its star is pinning its disastrous production down to “too much time, too much money.”
Appearing at the Just for Laughs comedy festival in London, Ryan Reynolds was asked about Green Lantern, a movie that is certainly easy to laugh at. “There was just too many people spending too much money and when there was a problem rather than say, ‘Okay, let’s stop spending on special effects and let’s think about character. How do we replace this big spectacle thing – that isn’t working at all – with something that’s character based?’ and that just never – the thinking was never there to do that…And to their credit, it’s a very old school way of looking at things.

Look, up in the sky! It's not a bird or a plane, but it's definitely one heck of a treat for fans of the big blue boy scout superhero. Superman may have experienced a bit of a rocky road in recent DC history on the big screen, despite an actor as capable and charismatic as Henry Cavill leading the action and even with James Gunn's promise that the immensely popular hero will be a "huge priority" moving forward. But even the biggest DC fans would have to admit that there's a certain ineffable charm to the original movies that first made audiences believe that a man could truly fly.

In many successful film franchises, there may be said to be an unspoken "rule of threequels." This rule dictates that the third film in a series is where things begin to unravel. The thinking goes as follows: A film is a hit, establishing a new character or world into cinema. The sequel, banking on the success of the first, will be larger, more exciting, and is often more ambitious. By the third film, however, the filmmakers -- in an effort to outdo film #2 -- either have to ratchet the action up to a near-intolerable levels, or take the action in a "new direction," often with disastrous results. One can see this dynamic at play in "Alien³," "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," "Return of the Jedi," "Death Wish 3," "X-Men: The Last Stand," "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift," "Spider-Man 3," "RoboCop 3," and "Halloween III: Season of the Witch.

1978's "Superman" has always been revered, but over successive sequels, the franchise slowly made a joke out of its source material. And even though star Christopher Reeve wasn't too happy with the way the saga developed, his one and only "Saturday Night Live" appearance in 1985 proved he not only had a sense of humor but that he remained a star even as his career-making franchise deteriorated.
Richard Donner's original Superman film feels just as relevant today as it did back in the late '70s. James Gunn is currently working on his upcoming Superman movie, which, in the post-Snyderverse era, will hopefully re-establish the character as an upstanding paragon of morality, just as Donner's movie did back in the '70s. Back when the director was first contacted by producer Alexander Salkind, he would have to salvage a truly disastrous first script before coming on board. Forty-five years later,...

In January 2011, Warner Bros. announced (via Deadline) that British actor Henry Cavill had been chosen to star in the studio's latest Superman reboot. At the time, the then-untitled project's director, Zack Snyder, described Cavill as "the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield." Two years later, "Man of Steel" soared into theaters, bringing Kal-El back to the big screen after a seven-year absence and — in the words of Warner Bros. Picture Group president Jeff Robinov — taking a "first step" into a greater DC universe.
In December 2022, Cavill took to Instagram to announce that he would be stepping down as Superman. "My turn to wear the cape has passed," he wrote, "but what Superman stands for never will. It's been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards." This optimism belied the true story behind Cavill's Man of Steel, however, who left behind a tarnished legacy of behind-the-scenes drama,...

"Superman Returns" might not be considered the best Superman movie, but in hindsight it really wasn't bad. Its reverence for Richard Donner's 1978 "Superman" film gave it some real charm, which, after two decades of the gritty reboot trend, seems like a much more welcome prospect now than perhaps it did back in 2006. But while it made a decent 391 million, it wasn't enough for Warner Bros. to push ahead with any sequels.
Director Bryan Singer did admit years later that his movie was perhaps overly "nostalgic and romantic." These days Singer's reputation has been pretty much decimated after some truly horrific allegations of sexual assault came to light, but back in the early-aughts he was riding high, having scored hits with "X-Men" and "X2: X-Men United." And when he wasn't churning out popular superhero blockbusters, he was also helping out with the acclaimed TV series "House," on which he served...

"Kneel before Zod!" With these memorable words, Terrence Stamp established his "Superman II" character, the imperious General Zod, as one of the great comic book movie villains of all time. Zod made his first appearance in "Superman: The Movie" as one of three criminals on the planet Krypton who are banished to the Phantom Zone. The film was shot at the same time as "Superman II," and it was meant to set up the sequel and lead directly into it with the same director, Richard Donner, at the helm. Yet "Superman II" had a notoriously troubled production, and to hear Stamp tell it, his heart wasn't in it after Donner was unceremoniously fired and director Richard Lester was brought in to reshoot scenes and finish the film.

Director Richard Lester, prior to his work on "Superman II" (1980) and "Superman III" (1983), was better known as a director of musical films. His first feature, 1962's "It's Trad, Dad!" was a youthsploitation picture about hip British teens getting into the underground Dixieland jazz scene and featured 27 songs. He followed that with a sequel to the Peter Sellers comedy "The Mouse That Roared" (about the world's smallest nation unwittingly conquering the United States in war), a space race farce called "The Mouse on the Moon." This led directly to two film collaborations with The Beatles, including "A Hard Day's Night," one of the best films ever made, and "Help!," which is quite silly but rather enjoyable. Lester also directed the utterly hilarious film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" with Zero Mostel, before moving into a series of frothy swashbuckling blockbusters like...

It is not a surprise to learn that Quentin Tarantino is a lifelong admirer of Richard Lester’s The Three Musketeers (1973) and The Four Musketeers (1974). Filmed as one movie but released in two volumes during the early ‘70s—a concept Tarantino popularized further some decades later with Kill Bill—the Musketeer movie(s) stood among the most popular action and comedy films of their day, and featured the type of swaggering bravado performances from the likes of Oliver Reed and Faye Dunaway that have long appealed to Tarantino’s sensibilities.
Nonetheless, it was still a surprise that when discussing those movies on a recent podcast, Tarantino revealed his love for Lester’s Musketeer duology is also responsible for one of his few fears in cinema: watching the belated sequel to that sprawling effort, 1989’s The Return of the Musketeers. While appearing on the Unspooled podcast alongside Roger Avary to promote their own podcast,...

Kim Kardashian just missed out on another Marilyn Monroe collectible.
After the “Kardashians” mogul donned two Monroe gowns for the 2022 Met Gala festivities, select costumes from Monroe’s film legacy were auctioned during a four-day “Hollywood Legends” event hosted by Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles.
A sheer white gown worn by Monroe in the 1954 musical comedy “There’s No Business Like Show Business” marked the highest purchase out of the 1,700 items, fetching a bid of 218,750. A sequin leotard worn by Monroe in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” sold for 102,400 alongside Jane Russell’s matching costume from the 1953 movie.
The auction was hosted in collaboration with Turner Classic Movies on June 1, which would have been Monroe’s 96th birthday. Monroe’s ensembles were among more than 100 items used by or belonging to the screen icon that were sold at auction. The “Some Like It Hot” actress died at age 36 in 1962 under unknown circumstances.

Over the past three decades, the beats and expectations of the modern Batman movie — and, thanks to the rapid expansion of the DC universe, even the modern Batman-adjacent movie — have remained relatively static. And yet, the man behind the cape and cowl has changed, on average, twice a decade.
When Tim Burton relaunched the popular superhero as a marquee name in 1989, the tangled webs of both the DC Extended Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe were a distant glimmer in Hollywood’s eye, and the last time a superhero film had topped the box office had been way back in 1981. Burton’s “Batman” eventually spawned four films…and three stars, with original star Michael Keaton only sticking around for two entries, followed by single showings for both Val Kilmer and George Clooney.

James Cameron’s Spider-Man. Kind of has a nice ring to it, don’t you think? Well, unlike the fictional James Cameron’s Aquaman–of which only a few fleeting seconds exist in the universe of the long-defunct HBO series Entourage–a Spider-Man movie written and directed by the legendary filmmaker almost came to pass in the early 1990s.
But like so many superhero and comics-based projects during that time–a relative Dark Ages for the genre–Cameron’s vision for the webslinging high school student never swung into theaters.
Almost all of it was down to legal issues surrounding the rights to Spider-Man, which kept him off the screen for years. But a glance through the “scriptment” that Cameron worked up–a detailed treatment outlining the story, characters, and even passages of dialogue–indicates that Cameron’s conception of the character and his mythos was very faithful in its own way.

Christopher Reeve is often referred to as the best on-screen Superman, and for good reason. The actor effortlessly conveyed the greatness within Kal-El, and maintained a perfect balance between the socially awkward Clark Kent and Superman, who radiated confidence and courage. Reeve played the Man of Steel in four films -- "Superman," "Superman II," "Superman III," and "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace" -- defining the character for a generation. Henry Cavill is a fantastic Superman, but as a young kid, Reeve charmed me unlike no other superhero had before.

Gavan O’Herlihy, best known for playing Richie and Joanie Cunningham’s disappearing brother Chuck on “Happy Days,” has died. He was 70.
O’Herlihy died in Bath, England on Sept. 15, his brother, Cormac O’Herlihy, confirmed to Variety. A cause of death was not disclosed, but his brother confirmed that it was not Covid-19.
After making an appearance on an episode of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” in 1973, O’Herlihy broke out on “Happy Days” as Chuck, the eldest Cunningham sibling. Chuck was a high school jock and was almost always seen carrying a basketball. He was played by three different actors — Ric Carrott in the show’s pilot, O’Herlihy for the first two seasons and Randolph Roberts for two episodes in Season 2 — giving way to the pejorative “Chuck Cunningham syndrome” to describe TV characters who disappeared from shows and were later written off as if they never existed.

Hollywood has spent the last three decades trying to reinvent Superman. After the Christopher Reeve franchise fizzled with 1983’s awkward Superman III and 1987’s truly dreadful Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, there seemed to be a prevailing impression that the character was broken, and that audiences just wouldn’t respond to a traditional interpretation of the hero. Hence nearly two decades of development hell as increasingly unrecognizable Superman screenplays failed to get made, 2006’s uneven Superman Returns, and 2013’s moody and violent Man of Steel and its unfortunate sequel.
Even on TV, at least in live action, it seemed like telling a “Superman story” wasn’t enough. 1993’s Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman fancied itself a high concept take on the legend, leaning heavily into newsroom drama (at least in its first season) and romantic comedy. Even the wildly successful Smallville proudly touted a “no tights,...

Wonder Woman 1984 has brought its message on the importance of truth onto screens worldwide. With retro stylings and a Hans Zimmer score, the second installment in Diana Prince’s story shows a more mature Amazonian who has adapted to man’s world and her solitary life, developing her skills as a superhero and her ability to keep out of the limelight.
Wonder Woman 1984 takes place well before the introduction of the other heroes of the Dceu and largely exists as a standalone film. However, there are still plenty of references to Diana Prince’s own history across the comics, small screen, and previous films.
We’ve used all the wisdom of Athena to chronicle as many Easter eggs as we can spot, but as always, if we’ve missed anything, do let us know in the comments.

Born Annabelle Allan Short in 1930, in Surrey, England, Ross moved to the U.S. with her Vaudeville actor parents, John and Mary Short, when she was four. She would grow...
