Late A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Last House on the Left and Scream director Wes Craven was responsible for some of the most iconic movies, characters and moments in horror cinema, but he was also behind his share of duds, and one of 'em is getting a (very) loose remake.

Craven didn't actually direct 2006's The Breed, but he was a producer on the film, and recruited his A New Nightmare assistant director Nick Mastandrea to helm. The movie was not well-received (to say the least), so it was generally assumed that a remake could only be an improvement.

The original movie focused on two brothers and their friends travelling to an island cabin they inherited from their recently deceased uncle for a relaxing weekend getaway. The group is then besieged by genetically enhanced dogs bred to kill via an abandoned training facility on the Island. A Breed Apart...

“A Breed Apart” is a new live-action thriller, written and directed by Griff and Nathan Furst, starring Grace Caroline Currey, Virginia Gardner, Riele Downs, Zak Steiner, Page Kennedy, Joey Bragg, Troy Gentile and Hayden Panettiere, releasing May 16, 2025 in theaters:

It’s been just about 20 years since the release of the Wes Craven-produced horror movie The Breed, and a brand new remake this year is taking an interesting approach to the material.

Watch the official trailer for A Breed Apart below for a taste of the meta twist on the 2006 movie that pits a new group of survivors up against a pack of wild killer canines.

Lionsgate’s A Breed Apart is described as “a hilariously harrowing tale of terror,” with the trailer mostly showcasing humans killing dogs rather than dogs killing humans.

Back in 2006, the late, great Wes Craven produced a killer dog movie called The Breed (watch it Here), which was directed by Nicholas Mastandrea from a screenplay by Robert Conte and Peter Martin Wortmann and starred Michelle Rodriguez, Oliver Hudson, Taryn Manning, Eric Lively, Hill Harper, Nick Boraine, and Lisa-Marie Schneider. Now a remake of The Breed is in the works, going by the title A Breed Apart – and Lionsgate is planning to give the film a theatrical release on May 16th. With that date just one month away, a trailer for A Breed Apart has dropped online, and you can check it out in the embed above.

On the same day as the theatrical release, A Breed Apart will also be available On Demand and On Digital.

Hayden Panettiere (Scream VI) is digging back into her horror roots with Collider’s exclusive first look at Lionsgate’s A Breed Apart. Set for a theatrical, digital, and on-demand release on May 16, the carnage-filled horror comedy is the latest to come from brotherly directorial duo, Griff and Nathan Furst — known collectively as The Furst Brothers. Using social media as a foundation, the movie builds an ominous and thrilling story with the help of its lineup of talent which, along with Panettiere, also includes Grace Caroline Currey (the Shazam! film series), Virginia Gardner (Beautiful Disaster), Riele Downs (Darby and the Dead), Page Kennedy (Blue Mountain State), Zak Steiner (Jessica Jones), Joey Bragg (Liv and Maddie), and Troy Gentile (The Goldbergs).

Giving us a bit of backstory, the opening sequences of today’s official trailer for A Breed Apart turn the clocks back 15 years and unveils the chaos and brutal massacre that befell a Hollywood production.

Hayden Panettiere is making the rounds in a number of intense films. Firstly, she starred in the recent film Amber Alert, with Abbot Elementary‘s Tyler James Williams, and is about a game of cat and mouse with a car suspected to be involved in an Amber Alert. Next, Panettiere joined the killer dog film, A Breed Apart, which is directed by siblings Nathan and Griff Furst and produced through their company, Curmudgeon Films. Deadline now reports that the former Heroes star recently wrapped filming the psychological thriller Sleepwalker.

The new film comes from Verdi Productions and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way Productions. Back in June 2024, we learned that Fall stars Virginia Gardner and Grace Caroline Currey would be starring in an upcoming remake of the natural horror film The Breed. Well, guess who just joined the cast? Scream star Hayden Panettiere! She, along with several others, will be starring alongside Gardner and Currey in the new horror film.

Wait! We need to clear some things up about this movie first. It's not actually a remake. It was initially believed to be one, but instead, it's a sequel to The Breed. It's also been given an official title, A Breed Apart.

While it's still unclear who is writing the script for the film, filmmaking brothers Nathan and Griff Furst (Nightmare Shark) will be directing and producing via their Curmudgeon Films production company. In addition, Daro Film Distribution is signed on to co-produce and will be financing the movie as well.

Exclusive: Hayden Panettiere will star in A Breed Apart. Known for playing Claire Bennet in Heroes, Kirby Reed in slasher franchise Scream and Juliette Barnes in Nashville, Panettiere will take an as yet unspecified role in the film, which uses Wes Craven’s cult 2006 picture The Breed as a jump-off point.

In addition to Panettiere signing on, Deadline can also reveal the film has rounded out its ensemble cast.

Exclusive: Film Independent has named the six filmmakers selected for its third annual Episodic Directing Intensive: John Gutierrez, Lorena Lourenço, Alfonso Morgan-Terrero, Huriyyah Muhammad, Kelsey Taylor and So Young Shelly Yo.

A three-day program, the Intensive welcomes veteran directors, showrunners, actors, cinematographers and executives to share their experiences and knowledge of the episodic directing landscape. Notables set to appear this time around include Kyle Patrick Alvarez, Johnson Cheng, Gloria Fan, Georgina Gonzalez, Liz Kelly, Shari Page, Jeremy Podeswa, Alysia Reiner, Beth Schacter, Nancy Schreiber, ASC, Yira Vilaro, Rina Varughese and Daniel Willis, among others.

“In this ever-changing landscape, we are thrilled to support these talented directors and equip them with the knowledge to launch and sustain careers in episodic directing,” said Dea Vazquez, Associate Director of Fiction Programs.
