Aaron Eckhart has landed the leading role in a new biopic about tragic Beach Boys star Dennis Wilson.

The Dark Knight actor will embark on drumming lessons to perfect his transformation as Wilson in Randall Miller's new film The Drummer, which charts the last six years of the rocker's life.

Eckhart, who bears an uncanny resemblance to the Beach Boy, will also sing and play piano in the film, which will start shooting in California early in 2012.

Wilson drowned in Marina del Rey, California in 1983, shortly after he completed work on what was to become his masterpiece album, Pacific Ocean Blue.

Director Miller insists his leading man is the perfect choice to play Wilson, telling WENN, "Aaron is such a finely nuanced actor who is supremely dedicated to getting at the essence of who this rock star was. It is going to be an exciting and emotional journey."

Wilson's children Carl and Jennifer have signed on as co-producers and the film is being made with the family's blessing.

It's not the first time Wilson has been portrayed by an actor on screen - Chris Jacobs played him in Helter Skelter and Bruce Greenwood was Wilson in TV movie Summer Dreams: The Story of the Beach Boys.

More casting details will be announced in the coming weeks, including who will play former Fleetwood Mac star Christine McVie, Wilson's one-time lover.

John Gray announced today that he has acquired the film rights to Bryan Gruley’s mystery thriller The Hanging Tree. Through his production shingle, Ovington Avenue Productions, Gray will write and direct the film, as well as produce it with his producing partner Melissa Jo Peltier. The pair just came off the festival circuit with audience favorite, “White Irish Drinkers,” which was released in 25 cities this past spring by Screen Media.

The Hanging Tree is the second novel in the best-selling Starvation Lake mystery series. The book is nominated for 2011’s The Barry Award and The Anthony Award, awards of the mystery/crime genre. The first book of the series, Starvation Lake, won The Barry Award, The Anthony Award and the Strand Critics Award the year it was released. The third novel, The Skeleton Box, will be released in Summer 2012.

White Irish Drinkers writer-director John Gray has acquired the Bryan Gruley mystery thriller The Hanging Tree, and he'll write the script to direct. Gray will also produce it under his Ovington Avenue Productions along with partner Melissa Jo Peltier. They worked together on White Irish Drinkers, the coming-of-age drama that was released by Screen Media. The Hanging Tree is the second novel in Gruley's Starvation Lake mystery series. Gus Carpenter, a former Detroit Times reporter-turned-detective, tries to solve the mystery of how a former resident of the Michigan resort town winds up hanging from a tree after she returns home. Another worthy independent film that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival has found distribution. Screen Media Films has acquired North American rights to White Irish Drinkers, a hard-edged coming of age story  set in 1975 Brooklyn. written and directed by John Gray. A spring 2011 theatrical release is planned. Two teenage brothers try to figure out what to do with their lives, each badly bruised from being raised to be terrified by the drunken rages of their father. That role is played by Avatar's Stephen Lang who plays a hard-drinking Irish blue collar worker handing down the lessons of becoming a man that he learned from his father: repress emotion, and rule with an iron fist. Burbank, CA’s horror store Dark Delicacies has announced a strong lineup of genre signings for January. It kicks off this Saturday, Jan. 10 at 2 p.m. with director Tony Randel, scripter Peter Atkins and composer Christopher Young autographing Anchor Bay’s 20th Anniversary Edition of Hellbound: Hellraiser II (see our review here).

The same day and time, Splatterpunk author John Skipp and new writing partner Cody Goodfellow put their pens to copies of their novel Jake’S Wake. Then at 3 p.m. on the 10th, comics faves Steve Niles and Bernie Wrightson sign their graphic novel, Dead, She Said.

Friday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. will see a special After Dark Films event, with Autopsy writer/director Adam Gierasch and writer Jace Anderson signing Autopsy posters and more guests from the other movies to be announced. Another one-sheet event, for My Bloody Valentine 3D, follows on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 2 p.m.

HBO Films and Playtone have acquired Vincent Bugliosi's Reclaiming History: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy and will develop it into a 10-part miniseries. Playtone's Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman will executive produce along with Big Love star Bill Paxton.

"The successful creative partnership we have enjoyed with Tom, Gary and Bill over the years imbues us with a confidence... that Bugliosi's riveting book will make a very powerful transition to the screen," HBO Films president Colin Callender said.

Playtone has produced such projects for HBO as minies From the Earth to the Moon, Band of Brothers and the upcoming John Adams and The Pacific as well as the series Big Love.

In his New York Times best-seller, Bugliosi, who prosecuted Charles Manson and penned Helter Skelter, disclaims many conspiracy theories and contends that Lee Harvey Oswald was the sole party behind the 1963 Kennedy assassination.

"75% of the American public believes in the falsehood that there was a conspiracy in the assassination of President Kennedy, and only 19% accept the findings of the Warren Commission that Oswald acted alone," Bugliosi said.

3 Wolves Prods. has optioned the rights to the warrior tale Nomads from actor-screenwriter George Tasudis. The action-adventure epic revolves around Suvar, the leader of a fierce barbarian tribe of robbers, who faces a series of obstacles and challenges that make a hero out of him. The project is out to directors. Tasudis also will appear in the film. His acting credits include the recent CBS TV movie Helter Skelter and the lead role in Whore House. Tasudis also played opposite Michelle Pfeiffer in White Oleander and had a role in Lifetime's original movie What Should We Do? 3 Wolves is a new production company with several features in the works, including Find Me Guilty and Chasing Diner. Tasudis is represented by Laura Walsh and Jean-Marc Carre at Central Artists Inc.

The series finale of The Practice and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition led ABC to a narrow win on what was a ho-hum May sweep Sunday all around for the Big Four networks. CBS did respectable 18-49 demographic business from 8-11 p.m. with its original Manson family telefilm Helter Skelter, which averaged a 4.1 rating/11 share, peaking in the last hour at 10.2 million viewers and a 4.6/12 in 18-49, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. ABC was buoyed by 8 p.m.'s Extreme Makeover (10.7 million, 4.3/12) and the 10 p.m. closer of David E. Kelley's Emmy-winning legal drama The Practice (10.8 million, 3.5/9). At 9 p.m., a return visit from Regis Philbin with a Super Millionaire special (11.6 million, 3.5/9) took a big dive from its Makeover lead-in in the demo but rebounded somewhat in the second half-hour.

Despite high-profile series finales on NBC and ABC, CBS and Fox divided the primetime spoils in the week ended May 16. CBS got a boost from its Wednesday Carol Burnett reunion special Let's Bump up the Lights and from its three-hour Sunday telepic Helter Skelter. For the most part, the eye network's win in total viewers (11.8 million) was fueled by regular programs including dramas CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: Miami and Without a Trace as well as comedies Everybody Loves Raymond and Two and a Half Men. Fox nosed past NBC for the weekly crown in adults 18-49 (Fox's 4.1/12 to NBC's 4.0/12) on the strength of American Idol. That '70s Show on Wednesday also posted its highest adults 18-49 demo score in a year.
