  • Going into a movie called Poseidon Rex you'll have naturally low expectations, and right here I assure you they're met!

It tells the story of a series of explosions that have awakened a dormant dinosaur, a "Poseidon Rex". Essentially it's a t-rex that can swim, and may I just begin by saying it looks ruddy awful.

Starring terrible movie veteran Brian Krause we see our big ugly cgi beasty going on a rampage and a rag tag of people forced to stop it right up until an incredibly bad cliched finale.

This is the kind of film that is constantly repeated on the Scyfy channel and why nobody takes that channel even remotely seriously anymore.

The acting is terrible, the sfx are cringe inducing and the plot is about as original a the average slasher movie.

    True dire stuff.

    The Good:

    Meh

    The Bad:

    Awful cgi

    Some laughable acting

Characters are stupidly unrealistic in their behaviour

    Creatures size isn't consistent

Things I Learnt From This Movie:

Seeing a dinosaur footprint in 2013 won't shock a person in the slightest

If you find an egg of an unknown large creature, maybe leave it there?!

Scientists are notorious for having beer in their labs fridge and drinking during experiments

The creators clearly could only get the license for one single song!
  • Poseidon Rex is one of those movies where you can tell that you shouldn't be expecting much from it. Even when that was taken into account, from a personal perspective it was still a load of rubbish that only has some nice scenery and underwater shots going for it. The creature, who is basically a half-dinosaur and half sea-monster, is another entry in the long line of terrible-looking SyFy creatures. There is a complete lack of fluidity in movement, texture or anything convincing in the design, and the it isn't menacing either with its "towering" presence most likely made possible by stilts. The scenes in which it appears in suffer from being hurriedly edited(in fact the whole movie looks rushed and murky-looking) and from having too much unintentional humour rather than genuine tension. The dialogue is at best trite and stilted, with the "snappy" banter marred by excessive cheesiness and wooden line delivery(the worst of them are absolute howlers). The story is very unexciting- with a fair amount of filler than could have been trimmed down or cut- and predictable stuff, anybody can smell the ending a mile off and any action comes across as heavy-handed and with overuse of fire-power. The characters are poorly developed and cardboard, they are just there and you don't know why, and some of them do some stupid things that make them even less easy to root for. The acting is very poor, with Brian Krause's lead performance lacking any kind of charisma(reading of a very last-minute replacement, Corin Nemec would have been a much better choice if it weren't for his terrible accident) while on the other side of the spectrum the obligatory stereotypical villain is played in a "hamming-it-up" style that's pretty embarrassing at times to watch. In conclusion, not the worst there is but it did come across personally as a rubbish movie- regardless of how low my expectations were- that should should be left uncovered. 2/10 Bethany Cox
  • I have a bad addiction to SyFy original films, and I unfortunately see almost all of them. This one actually had a decent plot and could have been done VERY well if it had a Hollywood (really anything but TV) budget. Out of all of the SyFy movies I have seen, it followed the same basic plot, a giant monster of some kind comes out of the ocean and attacks crappy actors, who were written by crappy writers and directed by a crappy director. But this one wanted SO BADLY to be GOOD! The T-Rex was actually ALMOST really cool looking. It ALMOST didn't look like a teenager in a computer class made him. All in all, it was a decent film, almost like a tribute to Godzilla, not a rip off mind you, because this actually was worth a watch. Three stars out of ten is fair for this, and it should be kept in mind before watching this. Any fan, or not fan, of SyFy, should check this one out!

As a big fan of B Movies, I've seen my fair share of films about marine based dinosaurs, normally their shoehorned into being about the Loch Ness Monster, but the crew of Poseidon Rex blew most of their budget on a more exotic location, so this time we're off to Belize for our prehistoric nonsense.

The plot, following a thoroughly uncharismatic swashbuckling rogue of a treasure hunter (played by Brian Krause. I've no idea what I've seen Brian Krause in before, but his appearance prompted me to blurt out "oh **** off not him again") who manages to accidentally free a hitherto unknown prehistoric predator while searching for Mayan gold. He finds himself teaming up with the Coast Guard, a busty marine biologist, 2 holidaymakers and their diving instructor to put an end to the menace before it destroys Belize.

It's largely by the numbers stuff, with the only real surprise being how brutal it is with some of the main cast's mortality. We've got a villainous human more concerned by chasing Jax for his gold than the fact there's a bloody great man eating dinosaur tramping about behind him, the race against time as the military threaten overly aggressive action and the stock 'shock' ending that anyone with an ounce of self-awareness will see coming, but it's really not all that bad. I mean it's stupid (the P-Rex apparently has a mean pair of stilts to let it stand at full height over a boat in the MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN) the CGI is pants and the acting is average at best, but it has a certain honest charm to it. It knows what it is and doesn't try to do anything smart.

I'd be lying if I said I ever wanted to see Poseidon Rex again, or will even really think about it the minute after I hit 'Submit' on this, but the fact it knows its place as a film about a bloody great dinosaur attacking a secluded community, yet doesn't degenerate into a horrible semi-parody that winks at the audience in a "we know this sucks, but isn't it funny?" way like the 300 Shark-variation films on the market right now really endears it to me. If you like B Movie nonsense, there are worse ways to spend a night, but at the same time you probably would be better off digging out Godzilla or The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms.

Sure, the movie is terrible, but I'm even more confounded by the description:

"Forced to pay off his debt to the murderous Caribbean crime lord, Tariq, instead, the American scuba-diver and treasure hunter, Jackson Slate, wakes up from its deep hibernation a massive, T-Rex-like sauroid off the coast of Belize."

I dare anyone to diagram that sentence.
  • You know that this movie is going to be one of those bad movies. And right you are, this is exactly that bad. But still, there is something morbidly fascinating about watching these horribly bad movies.

The storyline in "Poseidon Rex" is only outdone by the special effects (or what is supposed to pass as special effects) and the fact that this movie is one big cliché.

First of all, how would a prehistoric creature like this be able to sustain itself trapped in a crust of the of earth and trapped under the ocean for millions of years? It just doesn't make sense.

What also didn't make sense was the creature itself. It was just embarrassing to look at the CGI use in the movie. Most of the time it was quite bad, but every now and then, the creature effects were adequate to behold.

When they were diving, how could they be talking with those mouth pieces? It just didn't make sense.

The storyline had so many plot holes that it was hilarious to watch.

"Poseidon Rex" is a B-movie in every possible meaning of the word. Questionable effects, questionable story, questionable acting and questionable entertainment.
  • I can enjoy even the worst of any "the Asylum" movies and they usually give me a chuckle or two. Thos one however have no quality whatsoever, you might possibly enjoy the nice weather and great waters of Belize, but story, acting or action is something you have to seek somewhere else. I can understand if the lead actor "phone it in" with a movie like this, but how do you manage to make everybody involved to not care at all ? If you are thinking of watching this, try and find some of the old monster movies that they made 60 years ago, equally crappy monster, but they had better story and better actors. You can watch both "It came from outer space" and "Invaders from mars" for free on Youtube... much better spent time.
  • I found it a really fun dinosaur movie and I'm a fan of films like Sharknado 1, 2, 3, this film fits into the category of So bad it's good. I've seen worst dinosaur movies than this but I thought Poseidon Rex delivered plus I've seen worst CGI monsters in films but come on guys, its just a low budget dinosaur movie
  • Warning: Spoilers
OK its not like I expected a lot. I mean its a giant monster movie so my expectations were low. But as others have said outside of the tropical location for most of the movie it didn't have a lot of pluses.

Let's see here: 1. Although the movie characters constantly shoot at the monster with automatic weapons the CGI monster never shows a speck of blood or sign of a single wound until the end. They even hit the monster with a harpoon then have to untie the rope from the boat to keep the monster from pulling them under. Yet later the harpoon and rope are gone. Once again no blood or wound.

    2. They blaze away forever with said automatic weapons and the clips NEVER run out of ammo. Which is a good thing because they almost never even HAVE any extra ammo except on the coast guard boat.

    3. When they dive they find a wooden boat that is supposed to date back to the days when the Spanish looted the Mayans. Said boat had absolutely no coral growing on it. Now even if the explosion uncovered the boat it wouldn't have blown ALL the coral off it.

    4. The monster seems to be of variable size. I guess that could be a matter of point of view but the fact that it swims so well in the ocean but has no flippers and yet walks/runs of land just like its a land creature vice a water creature is unusual. It ALSO seems to walk on the bottom of the ocean and leave footprints.

    5. While the bends are mentioned while they are getting ready to dive later in the movie, at the beginning of the movie they set off explosives that would have certainly killed all the divers from the shock wave or if not the bends would have killed them. One of the first group of divers is found floating on the surface alive. I guess he came up in stages to prevent the bends while unconscious.

    6. So they go to an abandoned military base. In theory its been abandoned for decades. Never mind in the tropics it would be so overgrown it would be unfindable, they not only find it they are able to get an old junk heap of a generator to work so they have electric power to use an ancient radio so they can call for help.

    7. And this abandoned military base had a stocked armory and a working airplane and MOST of this stuff didn't even really look dusty or dirty.

    8. The monster is able to lift the front of its body out of the water far enough to smash down and sink at LEAST 5 boats. You see floating items after-wards but the boats themselves all sink like rocks ie the boats don't shatter and leave parts of the boat on the surface just coolers and such.

So in summary while these type movies require you to suspend belief this one had so many plot holes it was almost unwatchable. Then there was the horrible acting. :o)

Lol the acting was so cringe. At least the women were nice looking. Love the only track they have available is played over and over

I spent all of my lesson trying to find this movie. I watched it when i was ill thought it was really good but its probably rubbish ahaha
  • First of all, I need to clarify - no this is not a masterpiece. But if you are on this page, you have probably seen Sharktopus, Sharknado, maybe Age of Dinosaurs....something of that ilk. If not, welcome stranger to a whole new world! Poseidon Rex is about an aquatic dinosaur that is woken from its slumber to kill people in a not overly gory CGI way, usually by wiping out their boat along with the passengers. Some of the acting is somewhat poor, but this is partly some of the movie's charm. You chuckle at the awfulness. Basically, the storyline is.....who cares? You have an aquatic dinosaur on the loose, coming onto land, killing people whilst a beautiful female scientist and her chums seek to do something about it. The CGI is at times terrible, the acting at times worse than terrible, but the locations are nice, it's a fun and cheap movie for a Friday night when you fancy (and will likely need) an alcoholic beverage. I can't believe the low score it's getting. I love it and have it twice in 7 months. yes really. So, if you want decent characterisation, well, lets face it - it's called Poseidon Rex. If you want a great story...same answer. But it's undeniable fun if you like cheesy cheapfests like the aforementioned Sharknado etc. I loved it. Give it a try, you might too. if you don't, then sorry for your loss of 80mins but if you do enjoy it, it will make your life so much better won't it.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Corin Nemec was originally the lead actor in this movie, but the former Parker Lewis Can't Lose star was critically injured when a Belizean Coast Guard boat ran into a semi-submerged barge while transporting the crew to set. His leg was decimated and it took multiple blood transfusions to save his life.

Instead, we get Brian Krause, who was once Charles Brady in Sleepwalkers.

He plays Jackson Slate, who has been forced by a local crime lord to dive deep for treasure buried beneath the seas of Belize. He ends up freeing a giant dinosaur who is soon snacking on divers and henchmen with equal aplomb.

There's a great puppet scene with a hatched baby dinosaur, as well as the big bad final boss getting blasted with a bazooka. It's schlocky science fiction with bikinis and jetskis, but honestly, as horrible as the real world is today, this is a pretty decent escape that only lasts 79 minutes.

Well, they're getting better at hiding the fact that their movies are being produced by some poor, starving artists in Canada.

Never did I see the M-16s be reloaded. I sure would love to have had a bottomless 20 round magazine on my weapon in Germany. And who would fire a small calibre round at something that big? For me, give me a 40mm quad mount.

Light Anti-tank Weapons (LAW) are disposable -- unless they appear in SyFy movies. Not only do they not have to be reloaded, they don't even have a back-blast! Must be one of those Canadian modifications.

The airplane in the hangar had a Canadian registration. I assume that scene was shot in Vancouver, not Belize.

On to the girls. Not that I'm not a fan of pulchritude, quite the opposite. But these girls boggle the mind. Are they artificially enhanced? Are they real or are they pneumatic? Bellies that could be used for a lye soap washboard, tight waists, long legs --- time for a reality check.
  • **No spoilers ahead**

Let's be honest, nobody in their right mind would actually look at a title such as POSEIDON REX and expect a well developed movie with a good plot. Instead, what it so gracefully presents is a watchable laughfest.

I'm not gonna talk about character development or worldbuilding because there is none. Everyone is completely superficial with a single trait defining them, maybe 2 if you are generous with what you consider a trait.

What I am going to talk about is the massive swimming dinosaur, which makes my inner child extremely happy. The idea of having the most famous dinosaur swim is every 10 year old child's dream, probably because the plot came from the mind of such a child. There are two main problems with the large reptile. First, while the model is very cool, it's terribly inserted into every scene, almost looking like it was cut and pasted with no light adjustment or anything. The second problem is... it honestly doesn't have enough screen time. It appears to kill people, but we don't see how it lives and how it interacts with the world, the latter being agregious since there's only one scene of it actually destroying a wall (the boats are never really destroyed on screen, you have to know they are).

Overall, only watch when you need to relax and watch something you'll talk to your friends about how bad it is. The 5 stars are just because it made me laugh like I haven't in a long time.
  • Just right into it! Not even four minutes in and the plot has already begun as we meet the person who will become our protagonist, and we get our first glimpse of the titular beast. Add in many women wearing only bikinis or little more, the introduction of some forgettable characters who are only meant to die off, and an immediate plot point that raises skepticism, all within the first ten minutes, and we are guaranteed a wild ride of one sort or another. Exposition, plot development, and the introduction of all these characters are as brisk and brusque as Mark L. Lester's direction, Daniel Duncan's editing, and the acting - politely declining any especial tact or nuance in any regard. None of this is inherently bad, not even the most meager instances of the acting. I don't even mind the plainly ingenuine CGI monster that doesn't blend well with its background, the carelessness and inauthenticity with which action sequences are executed, or curt, questionable dialogue and delivery. And why don't I mind? Because it's readily evident that 'Poseidon rex' doesn't care. It just wants to have a silly good time with the nonsense that writer Rafael Jordan cooked up, one part adventure and one part comedy, and if other folks want to come along for the ride, good for them.

Good on Lester and his cast and crew for filming on location in Belize; it's nice to know that at least not all the underwater footage we get is stock. The CGI looks better at some points more than others, though mostly it's definitely on the low end of the spectrum in various ways. The scene writing, and Lester's direction to realize it, are distinctly unbothered, sometimes giving the impression of not even trying and at others being weirdly inconsistent within a single scene. I'm not sure if it's just fine for criminal Tariq and his gang to be walking stereotypes, considering the comedic edge (whether it's successful or not), or just inappropriate regardless. Christopher Cano's score is mostly unexceptional, but still well done and enjoyable; on the other hand, it's hard to miss the repetition of one specific song in the soundtrack three times within the first thirty minutes. Oh, and of course a romantic element is introduced that, like many movie romances, is totally contrived. And so on, and so on; to break this down piece by tiny piece would take far longer than I care to entertain.

It's a good thing that 'Poseidon rex' is geared for a cheeky, unserious romp instead of an earnest action-adventure creature feature, because it certainly couldn't be acceptable under any other circumstances. With all this having been said: every last aspect of the picture is approached with emphatic carefree heedlessness - truly, everyone involved just wanted to have fun, and did so, regardless of how it all looked in the final cut. And there's nothing wrong with that! But still, the absolute indifference of how this or that looked does wear thin after a while. If that ethos weren't so solidly pervasive, if anyone had at any point decided to inject even a tinge of sincerity into their contribution, this probably would have had a better chance at favorable reception. Although, on the other hand, had anyone tried, the effort would surely have come off as overzealous just by comparison. Anyway, it seems like the feature leans especially hard into its humor within the last twenty minutes or so, and thus it at least has a (relatively) strong finish.

I don't know if it's just because they're the stars, but Brian Krause and Anne McDaniels sure seem to be having the biggest blast of all. Coming in at a close second are those who in the last act portray military personnel. And me? What can I say, sometimes one just wants a title that's totally frivolous. For what it's worth, this is actually better than I expected, thanks simply to the unremitting abandon of all sense of restraint, and for that it's also significantly more enjoyable, too. Yes, of course this will actually appeal to only a very select type of viewer, they who are open to all the wide possibilities of what cinema has to offer no matter how ludicrous in concept or execution. But to my surprise I actually had a good time watching, and that's something that even some major studio fare can't claim. Even if you think you know what you're getting into you're likely still in for an eye-opener, yet if you're prepared to engage with the film on its level, 'Poseidon rex' is a wonderfully insipid way to whittle away eighty minutes.
  • Poseidon Rex is a horror film directed by Mark L. Lester.

While searching for lost treasure, deep sea divers unleash a monster that causes havoc and destruction not only in sea but also on land.

Before writing about the film i would like to warn the viewers to avoid this film as this film seems to be a very cheap copy of Jurassic Park and Piranha.

The plot of the film is bad and execution is equally disappointing. The acting is just poor and VFX are utterly disappointing.

    Please avoid the film.
  • While working off the coast of Belize, a deep-sea diver unearths a giant prehistoric dinosaur and must team up with several locals to help put an end to the creature's rampage through the area.Frankly this one turned out a lot better than expected and had a lot going for it. One of the main aspects here is the fact that this one goes for a much-more involved action-packed storyline than expected which is quite fun here with that generating a drive throughout here to really get this one going. There's a lot of fun in the early attacks on the patrol-boats and the gangster's attack that are quite fun due to the lack of survivors for each that keeps the creature's initial appearance a shock from the heroes. That then makes the creature's appearance at the party-boat in front of the hordes of locals all that much fun by showing it in full- view and ready to attack the party-goers stuck there makes for a rather fun scene as it sets the stage for the film's two big highlights. The first encounter in the ocean which is the battle with the armed forces who attack it with patrol boats and guns is pretty exciting as the resulting carnage attracts it to land where it attacks the series of sea-side attractions and establishments while the second is a lengthy car-chase to try to get away from the creature while there's plenty of gunfire to keep it at bay, several attacks on the car itself to get at them and finally leads into the chase through the dense woodlands which has some chilling moments to try to prevent the creature from getting to them. These are all quite fun and manage to make for a rather enjoyable time here as this allows the film a nearly non-stop relentless pace to keep on going forward. Surprisingly, this also helps the fact that the creature itself, which is clearly modeled after a true dinosaur but endowed with features and characteristics that none known dinosaurs actually possessed, to look far better than expected here when the beast isn't running around like crazy as some of these shots are far better than expected and manage to let it look pretty convincing. Still, there's the ever-present flaw in many of these movies where the creature doesn't really mesh all that well with the CGI being glaring and apparent for the most part. There's very little true interaction with the surrounding elements when it's on land and comes off rather obvious during these segments. Likewise, the fact that this one seems to be a dinosaur that features sea-monster characteristics, from the tail- webbing and spiked hands that were never a part of any dinosaurs' anatomy does make it odd about what the creature actually is or how it survived since there's nothing given about that aspect, but overall this one was quite a bit of fun.

Rated R: Graphic Violence and Language.
  • Gratuitous boob shots. Terrible acting. A Jamaican bad guy who we know is particularly mean because he has a dodgy eye. Special effects made on a Commodore Amiga. Second grade actors with bad teeth. There is a dog that walks past the camera in an early scene...he or she is the best actor in the film. Hilarious!!!!
  • I have never seen this movie but don't let that be a reason to invalidate this review.

As a valid movie watcher i can already tel the potential this movie holds, a cinematic masterpiece just waiting to be watched by the right multi-millionaire to make a second equally vivid movie.

As i can already tell the cgi is beyond believable and the acting could not be better executed. All in all this gift from god is more than worthy of an Oscar.

    Thank you for your time

Maybe not use flash light flickers for gun shooting then get some cgi help. Also The Godzilla movies from 1950s is better than this trash.
