A24 has a reputation as one of the coolest indie movie “brands” today.
Through dozens of films, they have established themselves as arbiters of extremely good taste, maintaining relationships with their favorite filmmakers while taking big swings on new talent. They have also shown themselves to be crack marketers of their own product (how many boutique film studios inspire young fans to sweat sweatshirts emblazoned with their logo?)
This brand awareness is quite powerful. Younger filmgoers know an A24 movie when they see them; and they go see movies because the studio is behind them. This knowingness, a contract between the studio and the audience, extends to A24’s horror output, which is even more easily identifiable. “It’s an A24 horror movie,” you’ll say. And whoever you’re talking to will know exactly what you mean. Maybe it’s a little folksy, maybe it’s a little techy,...

A24 is having a moment right now. For starters, the indie studio and 21st century tastemaker is actually able to produce movies during the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes due to its separation from the major Hollywood studios. So bring on that movie where Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega are responsible for killing a unicorn! More impressive though, A24 just picked up its second Best Picture Oscar in six years, and for a movie that walked away with a staggering seven Oscar wins overall in March.

Tom Schwartz seemed to exclusively hint towards the drama occurring behind the scenes between himself and his co-stars, Tom Sandoval and Raquel Leviss, during Et Canada’s interview at the “Vanderpump Rules” season 10 premiere.
“I’m guilty by association,” Schwartz said about his on-camera kiss with Leviss. “Oh my God. [Sandoval] made me do it. I didn’t want to do it. He’s like, ‘If you don’t do it, you’re a wussy… He steamrolled me.”
Though Schwartz did share his version of the truth to Et Canada in a joking manner — weeks before headlines revealed Leviss and Sandoval’s affair — Sandoval was quick to chime in and demand that Schwartz stop blaming him because it was a “fun” scene for the new season.

"Episode 3" was slower, but the plot added more layers to the grander mystery at large. Let's jump into the rewatch to discover the new twists.
Andy choosing Alan as the next Lifeguard wasn't surprising in the least. I called it during the rewatch for Murder in Small Town X Season 1 Episode 2 that he had a close bond with Jeff and Alan.
Plus, add in Brian for a complete majority voting bloc built in the war room.
Luckily, Alan had a clearer head in his position as he treated everyone evenly and fairly.

Welcome to this weeks review of Aew: Dark, which is the 99th episode of Aew’s first YouTube show. Apparently next week is going to be a special 100th episode but for now lets get to this weeks show – which is a mere 45 minutes like last weeks episode!
Match #1: Red Velvet def. Alejandra Lion
My Thoughts: The debuting Alejandra Lion had an interesting look and a hard-hitting style, as Excalibur said on commentary, which resemble an old Taz gimmick. In terms of wrestling, Lion brought it to Red Velvet hitting a nasty looking nail rake down Velvet’s back at one point. This one didn’t go on too long, with Red Velvet hitting her Final Slice finisher for the win.
My Score: 2 out of 5 Match #2: Abadon def. Killa Kate

Everything about the United States’ gig economy sucks but “Stranger Things” star Joe Keery has the perfect solution: Just broadcast yourself murdering all of your passengers until you become a social media celebrity.
That’s the gist of “Spree,” an upcoming Keery-led indie horror film that is slated to premiere in theaters and on demand on August 14. Dreamcrew Entertainment has unveiled the trailer for the upcoming feature, which boasts “the ride of your life” that will satirize influencer culture, social media madness, and America’s violent society.
Keery, who portrays Steve Harrington in Netflix’s wildly popular “Stranger Things,” stars in “Spree” as Kurt Kunkle, a rideshare driver and wannabe social media influencer whose goofy name is only matched by his ridiculous haircut. Keery will star alongside Sasheer Zamata, Mischa Barton, John DeLuca, Josh Ovalle, Lala Kent, Frankie Grande, Kyle Mooney, and David Arquette. The film is directed by Eugene Kotlyarenko,...

Bangkok- and Beijing-based Artop Media arrives at FilMart pitching rights to two successful TV series: “Fleet of Time” and “In Time With You.” Both are part of the company’s recent drive into in-house production.
The company was founded by Zhang Dong, who studied law and Thai at Peking University and took his first tentative steps into the entertainment business as the Asian Financial Crisis was raging in the late 1990s. He was involved in importing Chinese-made Vcd players into Thailand and figured that he could add value by including the content. After a stint with China’s Han Media, Zhang found financial backers and struck out on his own in 2009.
The company positions itself as a local producer in both countries. But it is focused on the kinds of content that can travel easily between the two. That means Thai TV series that can be exported and dubbed or remade in China.

Chance the Rapper is adding to his already lengthy list of side projects by developing a new movie musical called Hope for MGM. The story is close to Chance’s heart as, according to the studio, it follows a group of teenagers who turn “art into [community] action.” Since Chance’s rise to prominence, he’s also turned his attention from music to politics and activism. Most recently, he teased a bid for the Chicago Mayor’s office before ultimately endorsing Amara Enyia. ““Very narcissistically,” he said, “if I back you,...

MGM announced on Tuesday that it has acquired the rights to develop a movie musical called “Hope” with musician and actor Chance the Rapper.
Told through original music to be created by Grammy-winning songwriter and producer Nico Segal and his collaborators, “Hope” will follow a group of Chicago teenagers that band together to turn art into action within their community.
Chance, a three time Grammy-winning hip-hop artist and producer has also made a name for himself as a prominent social activist, especially in his home city of Chicago, launching #SaveChicago with his father to combat gun violence; donating $1 million to local schools; and creating Social Works, an organization aimed at empowering youth through arts, education and civic engagement within the city.

Austin Vesely has some serious balls. In his feature film directorial debut, “Slice,” the young writer-director casts one of the biggest musical artists in the world, Chance Bennett, aka Chance the Rapper, joined by one of Hollywood’s brightest rising stars, and a handful of veteran comedians. The filmmaker then crafted a “Thriller“-esque story —yes, that Michael Jackson music video — that features heavy amounts of special effects work, including practical makeup and CGI, and climaxes with a witch fighting a ghost, who is saved by a werewolf, as they battle over the gate to Hell.

Chance the Rapper might have made his feature length acting debut in “Slice,” but don’t expect him to leave the music industry behind any time soon. The rapper admitted during the “Slice” world premiere in Chicago that he didn’t have a great time acting and would much rather work on the creative side of filmmaking in the future.
“Slice” is the brainchild of Chance’s longtime collaborator Austin Vesely, best known for directing the rapper’s music videos for “Juice,” “Everybody’s Something,” and “Angels.” The A24-backed horror-comedy centers on a strange town, Kingfisher, where pizza delivery boys are being murdered and a werewolf is on the loose. The town’s residents band together to try and solve the murders before any more take place.

Chance the Rapper will make his feature film debut in A24’s “Slice,” and the distributor is taking a page out of Queen Bey’s book, dropping the film online without much warning.
The distributor will bypass the traditional release methods and instead drop the film on iTunes, digital and on-demand at midnight on Sep. 11.
But the film will still play in theaters — A24 hosted a premiere for “Slice” in Chance’s hometown of Chicago, along with simulcast screenings in 20 additional cities across the country. Alas, as of right now, that’s all the big screen time the movie will see. A24 has no plans to release “Slice” in additional theaters.

Comedy Central has greenlit the new digital series “Unsend,” which will look at social media’s sublime and bizarre reactions to everything happening in the world each week.
Paul Scheer will produce the series, which is hosted by Joel Kim-Booster (“Conan”) and Patti Harrison (“Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon”) and created by Deanna Cheng (“Heathers”) and Matt McConkey (“Heathers” and the Homophilia podcast).
The show examines the week’s events through social media, focusing not so much on what happened as on how people reacted online — from Reddit to “ill-informed tweets and Tmi Instagram stories,” according to a release. The hosts will cover everything from entertainment to sports, spotting trends and interviewing celebrities about online regrets. “Daily Show”-style correspondents will do deep dives into memes and baffling feuds.

Zazie Beetz embarks on a wolf hunt in this first trailer for the fun-looking supernatural thriller Slice. The movie also involves the murder of some pizza delivery boys, a ghost, and a pizza place that serves as the gateway to hell! This is one of those genre films with a retro flair that just looks like it will be a good time.
The movie also stars Chance Bennett a.k.a. Chance the Rapper, Paul Scheer, Joe Keery, and Rae Gray. Here's the synopsis:

Yeah, the joint’s owner, Paul Scheer, can’t believe it either — though apparently he’s been told before.

"It all started when the werewolf came back to town..." A24 has delivered a new full-length red bad trailer for their funky new horror film Slice, directed by Austin Vesely, and starring Chance The Rapper (aka Chance Bennett) as a pizza delivery guy who gets into some serious shit. As they reveal in this trailer, the more specific plot involves murders: "When a pizza delivery driver is murdered on the job, the city searches for someone to blame: ghosts? drug dealers? a disgraced werewolf?" The cast includes Zazie Beetz, Rae Gray, Katherine Cunningham, Marilyn Dodds Frank, Will Brill, Y'lan Noel, Hannibal Buress, and Paul Scheer. This looks way more bloody and violent and crazy and cool and wicked fun than I was expecting, which is good because it has been such a long wait to finally see more. For artists and creative types, despite all the year’s dark elements, there was reason for hope in 2017. Comedian Paul Scheer noted that although it was a tough year for many different reasons, there was plenty of amazing work to celebrate coming out of entertainment. He believes this historical moment will, at the very least, “breed good art.”
“Would I have preferred none of this to happen? Sure. But we’re in it, we’re dealing with it, and I feel there’s a passion coming out,” said Scheer, who noted that he is checking into this from the perspective of a straight, white male in this world. “This year, more than most, I’ve been so creatively excited by what I’ve seen — whether it’s Taika doing ‘Thor’ or the March on Washington.”

In 2003, Tommy Wiseau released “The Room,” one of the most notorious American indie films of all time, which Wiseau himself starred in, wrote, directed and produced. “The Room” quickly became a cult-classic due to its absurd and non-sensical plot, and was often referred to as the “Citizen Kane” of bad movies.
“The Room” also inspired “The Disaster Artist,” a 2013 non-fiction account of the disastrous film’s production, which in turn inspired the 2017 film out this December, starring James Franco, Seth Rogen and Dave Franco. “The Disaster Artist” took SXSW by storm earlier this year, gaining rave reviews and significant Oscar buzz for the film’s writer, producer and director, James Franco.

Every Oscar season needs at least one unpredictable dark horse, and this year “I, Tonya” fits the bill. The movie has earned rave reviews since premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, and while the Best Actress race is more jam-packed than usual, you can’t count out Margot Robbie’s career-best work just yet.

“I, Tonya” retells the true story of disgraced ice skater Tonya Harding and her ex-spouse Jeff Gilooly, who infamously hired a man to break the legs of Harding’s biggest competitor, Nancy Kerrigan, at the 1994 National Figure Skating Championship. The act killed Harding’s future in ice skating. Sebastian Stan stars as Gilooly, while Allison Janney plays Harding’s overbearing and cruel mother.
According to IndieWire’s David Ehrlich: “Robbie, for her part, has never been better.

Ryan Reynolds just hopped on Twitter to announce that Atlanta star Zazie Beetz, who plays Vanessa on Donald Glover’s critically beloved FX show, will play luck-twisting mercenary Domino in the upcoming Deadpool 2. Always happy to blur the line between himself and his beloved Merc With The Mouth, Reynolds made the announcement in a typically offbeat way, photoshopping Beetz’s head into an old Deadpool comic and spelling her name out with dominoes.

Today the distributor A24—which has put out the likes of The A.V. Club favorites like Moonlight and Green Room—put out a trailer. What is it for? That’s anyone’s guess. The footage shows glimpses into a sleek but eerie world, while phrases like “realize feeling” and “witness change” flash across the screen. The final one reads, “Live beyond.” Beyond what’s contained within the trailer itself, there’s no information about the project aside from the YouTube description: “In our near future.”
On top of that, the trailer doesn’t seem to correspond to any of the films on A24’s 2017 slate, which include John Cameron Mitchell’s How To Talk To Girls At Parties and Slice, the pizza delivery thriller starring Chance The Rapper. We’d tell you when this is supposed to come out, but we honestly don’t know.

After highlighting 50 films that we can guarantee are worth seeing this year, it’s time we venture into the unknown. Rather than regurgitating a list of dated-years-in-advance studio releases, we’ve set out to focus on 100 films we’re genuinely looking forward to, regardless of their marketing budgets. While some might not have a set release — let alone any confirmed festival premiere — most have wrapped production and will likely debut at some point in 2017, so make sure to check back for updates over the next twelve months and beyond. Be sure to keep the following one-hundred films on your radar (with release dates, where applicable). If you want to see how we did with our picks last year (potentially to shame us), head on over here.
