Known for crafting the stories behind his signature twist-filled films, M. Night Shyamalan is doing the unprecedented by teaming, for the first time, with another creative, and he couldn't have chosen a better co-creator. The horror maven is collaborating with New York Times best-selling author Nicholas Sparks to craft the story for a yet untitled project. It’s an unlikely pairing, but given their respective track records, it might just be a match made in movie heaven. The untitled film is described as a supernatural romantic thriller, a genre mashup that plays to the strengths of both Shyamalan and Sparks. Aside from a few casting announcements, the project has largely been shrouded in mystery, but as it begins to gather steam, the plot and character details have been made public.
Shyamalan and Sparks first developed the story into a novel, with the former concurrently crafting the screenplay. According to a new report via People,...

Directing the best American film of 2024 that’s also the uber-rare piece of experimental art to screen in multiplexes and––you know where this is headed––massive box-office bomb would typically spell the end of a director’s career. It’s to his fortune and ours alike that Robert Zemeckis’ well never quite runs dry, ergo: Deadline reports he’s set to direct Jennifer Lopez in the Netflix thriller The Last Mrs. Parrish, an adaptation of Liv Constantine’s novel that’ll be scripted by John Gatins (Flight) and Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton).

M Night Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks are collaborating on a movie and novel, both called Remain, it’s been announced.
In January, it was announced that writer-director M Night Shyamalan and novelist Nicholas Sparks are to collaborate on a somewhat unusual cross-media project. Shyamalan, the story went, will write the screenplay while Sparks will write the novel; little was announced about the venture at the time, though it was reported that Jake Gyllenhaal is to star in Shyamalan’s movie and that both the book and the film would be based on the same ‘original love story.’
A few new details have now emerged about the Shyamalan-Sparks happening, including a title: Remain. The reveal was published by People (coming to us via World of Reel) and also includes a synopsis, which we’ll get to shortly. By the sounds of things, the plan will be to release the book first,...

Auteur M. Night Shyamalan has a unique and distinctive directorial style, with a focus on sci-fi or supernatural stories like The Sixth Sense, Split, and Unbreakable, or thrillers like 2024's Trap. His upcoming project will feature a very unlikely team-up.

M. Night Shyamalan's upcoming film, based on a book he is collaborating on with Nicholas Sparks, just got a major update that reveals what the secretive thriller is about. A surprising collaboration between Nicholas Sparks and M. Night Shyamalan has taken a new twist. Two weeks ago, we learned that Alicia Vikander would join Jake Gyllenhaal in the film, but she has now exited the project. According to Deadline, Bridgerton's Phoebe Dynevor is now in negotiations to replace Vikander. Described as a "supernatural romantic thriller," the project will be adapted into a film helmed by Shyamalan and a novel written by Sparks.
Vikander is an Academy Award-winning actress who rose to prominence with roles in 2012's Anna Karenina and A Royal Affair. She went on to appear in movies including Ex Machina and The Danish Girl, with the latter earning her an Oscar in the Best Supporting Actress category. Dynevor, meanwhile, is one of Hollywood's rising stars, best known for her portrayal of Daphne Bridgerton in Netflix's hit Bridgerton, which gained her international recognition. Tom Cruise's bloody scene in Interview with the Vampire earns a glowing review from VFX artists. Released in 1994, director Neil Jordan's gothic horror adaptation of Anne Rice's 1976 novel follows vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac (Brad Pitt) as he recounts his life to journalist Daniel Molloy (Christian Slater). Cruise stars as Lestat de Lioncount in Interview with the Vampire, the vampire who is responsible for turning Louis into a vampire himself in 1791. One particularly notable sequence in the movie features Lestat morphing into a more monstrous form after getting his throat slit.
The VFX artists at Corridor Crew, including Sam Gorski, Wren Weichman, and Jordan Allen, now take a look at Cruise's bloody throat-slitting scene in Interview with the Vampire, praising the sequence for its inventive visuals. Sam praises the sequence as being "more subtle than I thought it would be," with Wren then going on to...

VFX artists recently examined Ridley Scott's Prometheus film and discussed Scott's decision to go for a more realistic approach in a pivotal scene. The film originally saw one character mutating into a CGI-heavy monster.
Set in the Alien franchise, 2012's Prometheus starred Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green and Charlize Theron as the crew of the film's titular spaceship as they search for the origins of humanity and arrive on a distant world. In a recent episode of Corridor Crew's VFX Artists React to Bad & Great CGi on YouTube, Prometheus was examined alongside some of Scott's other Alien films. A version of the scene where Fifield (Sean Harris) returns to the Prometheus in a monstrous and mutated form was originally made with much more CGI, which Scott removed in post-production.

While some reality shows show glitz and glam, others show the grit and dirt of living off the land. Sure, people still wonder if these shows are heavily produced and edited. There are questions if the survival reality show Alone is real, because even when a show is filmed in the woods instead of in a city or town, viewers are still skeptical.

The following contains spoilers for Alien: Romulus, out now in cinemas worldwide.
The best way to experience the phrase "common sense is not common" is through horror films. Either by design or character flaw, almost everyone in these movies makes the worst decisions and plays right into the hands of the one stalking them. It leads to entertaining outcomes, no doubt, but also hands out the characters their worst fates.
People often forget that the Alien franchise is, first and foremost, a horror film series. Throughout its history, characters have made one blunder after another, either out of fear or because of the necessity of the plot. But whatever the reason, fans of the series have embraced the idiocy of its characters, leading to discourses on the possible routes the stories could have taken if everyone was smart for once.

VFX artists explain why the original stampede scene from Jumanji still holds up 29 years after its release. The 1995 movie, directed by Joe Johnston, revolves around the eponymous board game and chaos that ensues when Judy (Kirsten Dunst) and Peter Shepherd (Bradley Pierce) discover its magic. Along with Dunst and Pierce, the film stars Robin Williams as Alan Parrish, a man stuck in Jumanji for over two decades. It’s New York City, 1989. Susan Seidelman is in the delivery room, in labor with her son. “Siskel and Ebert” plays on the TV, and in between contractions, the two critics are tearing apart her new movie “She-Devil.” “Watching them review my film literally with the doctor’s hand inside of me telling me to push was very strange,” Seidelman recalls.
That surreal scene is just one of the memorable moments the trailblazing director recounts in “Desperately Seeking Something: A Memoir About Movies, Mothers, and Material Girls.” By turns reflective and celebratory, the book covers the surprises and setbacks of a career carved out at a time when women filmmakers were a rarity.
When Seidelman first realized she could aspire to become a movie director, she could barely find a role model. Outside of Elaine May, there was only a small handful of women directing. But Seidelman kept at it,...

When Susan Seidelman first decided she wanted to become a filmmaker, she didn’t have any guidebooks to help the Philadelphia native on her chosen journey. With her new autobiography, “Desperately Seeking Something,” she hopes to change that.
“When I would read books about what it was like directing, it was John Ford or John Houston or Alfred Hitchcock, these guys writing from a very male perspective,” she told IndieWire during a recent interview. “I had to kind of figure stuff out for myself, so I thought it might be nice to write a memoir about what my experience was like, but also with advice for the next generation, the next few generations, hopefully.”

VFX artists admire the CGI in 2016's Ben-Hur remake, finding it mostly convincing despite some minor flaws in wide shots. Sculpted muscles on CG horses and blend shapes helped create photo-realistic visuals in intense action sequences. Timur Bekmambetov's adaptation of Ben-Hur faced criticism for straying from the original story and for heavy CGI usage.
Three VFX artists appraise Timur Bekmambetov’s 2016 epic historical drama Ben-Hur. Based on Lew Wallace’s best-selling novel titled Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ, this remake tells the story of the titular character, a prince who seeks to return to his homeland for retribution after being falsely accused of committing treason by his adopted brother and best friend. While previous Ben-Hur releases have been highly regarded, this adaptation was met with mostly negative reviews, and it also ended up a box office failure.

The short film Battleground, based on Stephen King's story, has received praise for its visual effects, surprising artists who couldn't believe it was made 17 years ago. The camera work in Battleground is commendable, with the filmmakers shooting everything on set with a low-angle camera to match the perspective of the toy soldiers, making it a challenging task. The attention to detail, such as matching lighting, camera angles, and scale, in the visual effects of Battleground showcases how visual effects were an integral part of the filmmaking process from pre-production onwards.

The 2006 "Battlegrounds" episode of Nightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King follows a hitman who faces off against an army of toy soldiers after he murders their creator. The VFX artists at Corridor Crew are impressed by the short, praising the camera work, scale-matching, and compositing involved in inserting miniature toy soldiers into a larger world. Nightmares and Dreamscapes only ran for 1 season, but a TV anthology show may be a better fit for many of King's works, some of which aren't translating well into feature-length films.

VFX artists criticize flaws in the AI background actors in Prom Pact, questioning the need for digital doubles and suggesting a cover-up. The SAG-AFTRA strike highlighted concerns over Hollywood's use of AI and the replacement of real actors, with the effects in Prom Pact coming under scrutiny. The agreement between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP may impact the use of AI in film, but the specifics have not been made public yet.
The AI background actors in Prom Pact are being called out with even more flaws by VFX artists. The Disney+ movie follows Mandy Yang, a high school senior who agrees to take her best friend to prom. Complications arise when she begins developing feelings for another boy, Graham Lansing. The cast of Prom Pact includes Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Blake Draper, Milo Manheim, Monique Green, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and Margaret Cho. Lifestyle is back with another murderous plot, this time with a film titled Murder Runs in the Family. As the title suggests, the murder mystery film ropes in various members of a family that had nothing going right for it. The Williams family is not your typical suburban family. With lots of secrets hidden at its core, its real trouble begins when Wren Williams arrives home to find her adoptive mother dead in the bathtub. With an interesting beginning, the film promises to be an engaging watch, but soon, with its dull performances, poor dialogue, and generic set design, the film becomes another run-of-the-mill mystery thriller. If you are addicted to big reveals, where the explanations are given as to why you saw characters run around in circles for 90 minutes, then you should stick with this one; otherwise, you should not.

VFX artists on Corridor Crew's "Animators React" series react to Jay Jay the Jet Plane, finding the show to be creepy. The animators take issue with the technology used, which they believe removes any sense of artistic expression from the show. While story and content of animated properties will always be the most important factor, animation quality is also important to a degree, as it can determine how effectively a story is absorbed by audiences.

Life doesn’t always stay the same. The silly days of childhood aren’t just going to come back, especially in adulthood, when everyone is busy in their own lives, getting stressed over earning money or maintaining a family. Jennifer Cram’s recent directorial Sick Girl is all about rescuing that precious friendship, but in a very troubling way. Sick Girl is a comedy-drama that fails to provide laughs or make any sense at all. 2023’s Bottoms, despite being a high school teen drama, spoke a lot about female friendship, presenting it hilariously, while Sick Girl doesn’t take the opportunity to make the audience connect with the characters with its tedious and predictable storytelling.

Sick Girl is a comedy movie about a woman who lies about having cancer to bring her once close-knit friend group back together. Director Jennifer Cram transitioned from casting to directing after teaching herself how to write. She wrote the script for the movie 10 years ago. Nina Dobrev leads the cast as Wren, and her performance as a twisted character in a comedy was a departure from her previous work. Cram didn't initially have Dobrev in mind for the role but thought she would be interesting to cast.

The movie follows a woman who feels her life has become a downward spiral due to the disconnect in her once extremely tight-knit friend group. Let’s just be honest: being scared isn’t fun. At least, not for everyone. So entering Halloween — aka “spooky season” — can be pretty hard, especially when it comes to finding movies to watch. Well, it’s a good thing you’re here.
Because the thing is, Halloween movies are a core piece of celebrating the holiday. You get together with friends, you break into the candy early, turn off all the lights and get cozy for the night. But if you’re a big ol’ scaredy cat (like this writer is more than secure enough to admit she is), those nights are significantly harder.
So, we went ahead and rounded up 13 of the best Halloween movies that you’ll be guaranteed to still get a good, nightmare-free sleep after.

Disney+'s The Mandalorian has become one of the streaming service's most popular original shows, bringing much attention to the world of Mandalore and its people. However, this isn't the first time fans have seen their world, as other Star Wars media explored the group and other Mandalorian characters before the show's release.
There are various Mandalorian clans scattered throughout the galaxy, many of which were eventually consolidated into three separate houses: Vizsla, Kast, and Kryze. That said, every Mandalorian faction was subject to the rule of the Mand'alor. Here's a brief look at the different Mandalorian houses and clans, as well as some of the prominent figures in each.
Updated on October 24, 2023, by Ajay Aravind: With Season 3 already up and running, fans can't wait to see what happens next on The Mandalorian.

Warning! This post contains Spoilers for AhsokaStar Wars' new Ahsoka show features a dynamic collection of exciting lightsaber duels. Thanks to Ahsoka's impressive cast of lightsaber-wielding characters with heroes such as the titular Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) and her apprentice Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), there are plenty of clashing lightsabers throughout. Likewise, the show features a strong trio of dark-side villains armed with lightsabers and more such as Baylan Skoll (Ray Stevenson), Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno), Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto), as well as the mysterious and helmeted Inquisitor known as Marrok.
Ahsoka takes place during the New Republic era. This means that the forces dark forces at play are not Sith in the conventional sense (despite the presence of lightsabers). In a similar vein, Ahsoka is a former Jedi struggling with her past while training Sabine to become a Jedi, herself a Mandalorian with her own challenging past.

Wren Pepper is in a pickle in screenwriter/director Jennifer Cram’s debut feature Sick Girl. Wren’s friends are quick to rally around her as she moves through her cancer journey. Unfortunately, Wren doesn’t really have cancer. She told a little white lie that suddenly morphed into a very big problem that just won’t go away.
What propelled Wren to tell that lie may be something most people can relate too, but nobody would actually admit to having cancer if it wasn’t true. That offbeat premise works in Sick Girl mostly because Cram doesn’t want the audience to sympathize with Wren, played by Nina Dobrev. The fun is in watching Wren writhe in guilt and shame. The result produces a middle-ground comedy that’s good for some escapist fun yet never fully reaches the high points you want it to.

If you are going to do a so-called “hilarious” comedy dealing with cancer you better know how to do it. Unfortunately, writer/director Jennifer Cram, for her first feature film in those jobs, does not knock it out of the park.
Sick Girl which stars Nina Dobrev as Wren, a bit of a mess of a 30ish woman whose spur-of-the-moment little white lie about having cancer spirals out of control, would need a satirist along the lines of an Adam McKay to actually pull off this misbegotten comedy which is simply more cringe-inducing than funny, and Cram, whose previous work has been in Casting just can’t find the right tone to make it work. The premise may have sounded good on paper but it quickly turns into a one-joke idea stretched way beyond its worth. Lionsgate is opening this Friday day and date in theatres and VOD, the latter...

“We’re barely ever together as a group,” Wren Cooper moans to her lifelong pals in Sick Girl, the hilarious feature film debut from Jennifer Cram. “That’s the way it goes,” one of Wren’s friends shoots back. Maybe not for long. In the madness of a frenetic gathering, Wren makes a startling announcement: “I have cancer!”
She doesn’t. And Wren herself may not really know why she just blurted it out, but between the thought that she may have peaked in high school and the fact that her now adult friends are seemingly slipping away, she’s desperate to keep the BFFs’ connection alive. Hilarity ensues of course.
The R-rated film stars Nina Dobrev as Wren, Wendi McLendon-Covey (The Goldbergs), Dan Bakkedahl (Veep), Brandon Mychal Smith (Four Weddings and a Funeral), and Sherry Cola (Good Trouble). Filmmaker Jennifer Cram shared more about Sick Girl with MovieWeb in this exclusive interview.

The distinction between Japanese and American Godzilla films is subtle but significant, creating disparate experiences for the audience. Shin Godzilla, directed by Hideaki Anno, stands apart in capturing the genuine horror and catastrophe unleashed by the behemoth, using a seamless blend of practical and digital effects. Anno's masterful blend of practical and digital elements in Shin Godzilla offers a visual feast that resonates with the intrinsic and existential horror that Godzilla embodies, making the terror of the Kaiju more palpable and relatable.

The Corridor Crew YouTube channel compares the filmmaking of Shin Godzilla and the American MonsterVerse, highlighting how the Japanese film captures horror and destruction through its use of practical effects, miniature sets, and CG. Shin Godzilla is praised for its intercutting between a CG and animatronic Godzilla, as well as its cinematography and motion capture, which make the creatures feel more realistic compared to recent MonsterVerse films. Godzilla effects have evolved over the years, from hand puppeteering and rubber suits in the original 1954 film to the use of CG in the 1998 version and the fully CG Godzilla in Gareth Edwards' reboot.
