“Civil War,” the new acclaimed drama from director Alex Garland, is dominating theaters everywhere, and the film’s star Kirsten Dunst gives one of her best performances in her long and varied career. In honor of her latest movie, let’s revisit her many awards races, including her first Oscar nomination for “The Power of the Dog.”
Dunst’s first role that brought the actress lots of awards attention arrived in 1994 in Neil Jordan’s “Interview with the Vampire,” starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Dunst’s performance as the young outspoken vampire Claudia earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress, up against Sophia Loren in “Prét-à-Porter,” Robin Wright Penn in “Forrest Gump,” Uma Thurman in “Pulp Fiction” and Dianne Wiest, who won the trophy for “Bullets over Broadway.”

The Oscar race for Best Supporting Actor is one of the most uncertain of the year. Paul Dano (“The Fabelmans“) led initially, but once the film premiered his co-star Judd Hirsch started to take some of his momentum, and an actor from a different film took over the lead in Expert journalists’ odds: Ke Huy Quan in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” It would be only the second win in the category by an Asian actor (following Haing S. Ngor for “The Killing Fields”), and the first for an actor of Vietnamese descent.

Before “The Fabelmans” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, Paul Dano was the presumptive favorite to win Best Supporting Actor for his role in Steven Spielberg‘s semiautobiographical drama. But there has been a major shift in the forecasts of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed. Dano has lost a little bit of ground, slipping down to second place, while his co-star Judd Hirsch has skyrocketed to third place.

Critics all agree that “The Batman” ranks among the best Batman movies, if not the best Batman film as Matt Reeves delivers a grounded take of the Dark Knight detective in a film noir that has has shades of “Seven,” “Zodiac” and “Chinatown” thrown in for good measure.
“What’s more impressive than what Reeves has done — which, even at its most superficial, is essentially (and very effectively) to remake ‘Seven’ with Robert Pattinson as the jaded William Somerset to Jeffrey Wright’s increasingly disillusioned David Mills — is the fact that he grafts the Fincher film’s unimaginable atrocities onto a Caped Crusader adventure for a purpose thankfully more meaningful than taking funny-book characters ‘seriously’ for a fast buck,” wrote TheWrap’s Todd Gilchrist in his review of the film.
Reviews also note that Pattinson, who stars as the Dark Knight detective, gets to be the active protagonist in his film,...

Five years after David Ayers’ “Suicide Squad” was met with lackluster reviews, “Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn took another stab at the DC Comics story, using several of the same characters and lots of new faces in what’s not quite a reboot and not quite a sequel.
While the film doesn’t hit theaters until Aug. 6, the first batch of reviews are in, and they’re overwhelmingly positive.
Read some highlights of what critics are saying below:
Variety’s Owen Gleiberman:
“‘The Suicide Squad’ gets it right, honing that rogue attitude to a much sleeker edge of outrage. It’s a team-of-scruffy-cutthroats origin story that feels honestly dunked in the grunge underworld, and shot for shot it’s made with a slicing ingenuity that honors the genre of ‘The Dirty Dozen’. Kirby was awarded the Volpi Cup for Best Actress in Venice and Oscar buzz for the actor has continued to spread since Netflix released the film to a wide audience on January 7. Watch highlights of Kirby’s performance in an exclusive new featurette from Netflix above.
“‘Pieces of a Woman’ is an odyssey of grief,” Kirby explains in the three-minute reel. “It’s a very powerful exploration of one woman’s journey, but one that I think is incredibly universal.” Executive producer Martin Scorsese, director Kornél Mundruczó, screenwriter Kata Wéber and actress Ellen Burstyn also discuss their journey with the Netflix original film and witnessing what they describe as Kirby’s “stunning” and “brilliant” performance. “I feel mother’s pride,” says Burstyn when asked about working alongside Kirby.

Given his stature as a groundbreaker in Black cinema, it’s surprising that Spike Lee didn’t earn his first Oscar nomination for Best Director until “BlacKkKlansman” (2018) — three years after he accepted an Honorary Oscar from the academy. That made him only the sixth Black director in history to make the cut. But none have ever been nominated in the category twice, and Lee would do just that if he returns to the lineup with “Da 5 Bloods.”
John Singleton made history as the first Black nominee in this category, and he still holds the record as the youngest filmmaker ever nominated: he contended for “Boyz n the Hood” (1991) when he was only 24. It took almost two decades for another Black director to be nominated, Lee Daniels (2009’s “Precious”). But there were four more over the next 10 years: Steve McQueen (2013’s “12 Years a Slave”), Barry Jenkins (2016’s “Moonlight”), Jordan Peele...

Kingsley Ben-Adir is being campaigned as a leading man at the Oscars for his role as civil rights leader Malcolm X in the drama “One Night in Miami.” If he’s nominated, he wouldn’t be the first to contend for Best Actor for this role. Denzel Washington‘s first Oscar nom as a leading man came for his starring role in Spike Lee‘s 1992 biopic “Malcolm X.” But Washington didn’t win that contest. Can Ben-Adir win where Washington couldn’t?

Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom“) has been ahead of Frances McDormand (“Nomadland“) in our overall Oscar odds for Best Actress for several weeks, but for most of that time the Expert journalists we surveyed were still giving the edge to McDormand. Not anymore. The Experts have joined the rest of our users in forecasting a Davis victory, but the margin is razor-thin, and there’s an ingenue they both need to keep an eye on: Vanessa Kirby in “Pieces of a Woman.”
As of December 4, there were 10 Experts who said Davis is out front: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Erik Davis (Fandango), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Tariq Khan (Fox TV), Susan King (Gold Derby), Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV), Michael Musto (Queerty), Claudia Puig (Kpcc), Anne Thompson (IndieWire) and Peter Travers (Rolling Stone).

“1917” won a lucky seven BAFTA Awards on Sunday, February 2. The haul at the BAFTAs for this WWI epic included the top prize of Best Picture. Multi-hyphenate Sam Mendes shared in that win as well as the one for Best British Film and claimed another on his own for directing this tribute to his grandfather.
Heading into these precursor prizes, his film was already out front to win Best Picture at the Oscars next Sunday. Mindful that the British academy often previews the Academy Awards, our Oscar experts from major media outlets have been busy updating their predictions with a slew shifting their votes to “1917.”
Sixteen of our 27 pundits are now predicting “1917” will prevail on February 9. That support translates into leading odds of 11/2 for it to take the top prize at the Academy Awards.

Our Oscar experts from major media outlets now give the edge in the Best Picture race to PGA winner “1917.” Ten of our 25 pundits predict Sam Mendes war epic will take the top prize on February 9. However, seven of them say to watch out for “Parasite,” which pulled off an upset at the SAG Awards in the marquee ensemble category. Only seven still support “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” which held the early lead after the 2020 Academy Awards nominations announcement on January 13
These updated predictions have resulted in new odds, with “1917” now in first at 11/2 while both “Ouath” and “Parasite” are right behind at 6/1. After the 2020 Academy Awards nominations announcement on January 13, our Oscar experts from major media outlets updated their Best Picture predictions and gave the edge to “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Quentin Tarantino‘s fable had 11 of our 19 critics predicting it to win Best Picture on February 9.
But since then, “1917” won at the PGA Awards while “Parasite” took the top prize at the SAG Awards. Martin Scorsese is certainly a Golden Globes favorite, with three victories for directing “Gangs of New York” (2002), “The Departed” (2006) and “Hugo” (2011). Yet when it comes to their Best Film categories, he’s been far less successful, with a single victory for “The Aviator” (2004) 15 years ago. That losing streak could finally be broken with “The Irishman,” a meditative mob epic that’s emerged as a major frontrunner.
See Martin Scorsese (‘The Irishman’) could tie this Golden Globe record with his hero Elia Kazan
According to our racetrack odds, the Netflix release is out front to win Best Drama Film with odds of 69/20. Close behind are “Joker,” “Marriage Story,” “1917” and “The Two Popes.” Oddly enough, it’s the only award the movie is predicted to receive, although it could very well surprise in Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Al Pacino or Joe Pesci) or Best Screenplay (Steven Zaillian).

Might we be underestimating Christian Bale at the Oscars? He has earned four nominations and one win in just the last 10 years, and his performance as real-life racer Ken Miles in “Ford v Ferrari” is looking more and more like a threat for a Best Actor bid this year. History has proved that it’s perilous to underestimate him, especially when he’s playing a historical figure.

Mike Flanagan’s “Doctor Sleep,” the film adaptation of Stephen King’s sequel to “The Shining,” is a “tremendous achievement” and a “worthy successor to ‘The Shining,'” critics say.
“[It’s] among the best Stephen King adaptations ever,” CinemaBlend’s Eric Eisenberg wrote,” while Daily Mirror’s Chris Hunneysett called it “thrilling and accomplished.”
‘Doctor Sleep’ is a stunning and frightening film about trauma and substance abuse, it’s a worthy successor to ‘The Shining,'” added Bloody Disgusting’s William Bibbiani. Overall, critics seem to agree that the beginning is a slow burn, but the third act makes it worthwhile.

Unlike Glenn Close, who was denied an Academy Award (darn that Olivia Colman!) on her seventh try when she was nominated for 2018’s “The Wife,” Renee Zellweger already has a gold trinket to cuddle for her spunky supporting acting turn as a no-nonsense mountain woman in 2003’s “Cold Mountain.”
She was previously nominated for her upgraded take on a single working girl in 2001’s “Bridget Jones’ Diary” and she was lauded for her singing and dancing turn as murderous jazz-age chorine Roxie Hart in 2002’s “Chicago.” But something happened to Zellweger once she earned Hollywood’s top honor. Congratulations to our Expert Sasha Stone (Awards Daily) for a tremendous score of 91.67% when predicting the 2019 Oscars winners on Sunday. She leads 37 Experts, journalists who cover the entertainment industry throughout the year. See Experts’ scores.
Over 8,000 people worldwide predicted these Academy Awards champs at the Hollywood ceremony. Our champ got 22 of the 24 categories correct, only missing for Best Actress (choosing Glenn Close over Olivia Colman) and Best Documentary Feature (choosing “Rbg” over “Free Solo”). That means she got Best Picture (“Green Book”) and the other three acting winners.

Up until this week, I was predicting that “Rbg,” the Oscar-nominated documentary tribute to the wonder woman who is Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg would win, mostly because of its medicinal effect on our uncertain times. It gets many things right, like highlighting her nearly half-century love story with her devoted husband, Martin, her odd couple friendship with fellow Justice Antonin Scalia and her career-long dedication to fighting on behalf of women to be treated as equals in the eyes of the law.
But “Rbg’ has one major flaw that is simply the fault of Ginsberg’s profession. We can’t eavesdrop on her arguments in the Supreme Court or witness her as she delivers those scathingly brilliant dissents in real time. Basically, we rummage through her closet and see her jazzy array of jabots that she wears with her robes. And we can hear her arguments for her landmark cases over the years.

“Black Panther” wasn’t even nominated for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design at the BAFTAs, but the Expert journalists we’ve polled think the Marvel blockbuster will win both categories at the Oscars against BAFTA champ “The Favourite.” Are they right?
As of this writing “The Favourite” is the odds-on favorite to win for both its production design and its costumes, according to the combined forecasts of thousands of Gold Derby users. But the Experts have jumped ship in both cases over to “Black Panther.” There are currently 14 out of 24 who say we should expect an upset: Erik Davis (Fandango), Eric Deggans (NPR), Edward Douglas (Weekend Warrior), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Tim Gray (Variety), Matthew Jacobs (Huffington Post), Tariq Khan (Fox TV), Susan King (Gold Derby), Andrea Mandell (USA Today), Scott Mantz (Collider), Perri Nemiroff (Collider), Kevin Polowy (Yahoo), Christopher Rosen (TVGuide.com) and Brian Truitt (USA Today...

“Roma” may have won only four BAFTAs to those seven for “The Favourite” but this haul included the top prize of Best Picture. Multi-hyphenate Alfonso Cuaron shared in that win as well as the one for Best Foreign Language Film and claimed the other two on his own for directing and lensing this intimate memoir.
Heading into these precursor prizes, his film was already out front to win Best Picture at the Oscars. Mindful that the British academy often previews the Academy Awards, our Oscar experts from major media outlets have been busy updating their predictions. All but four of our 24 pundits are now predicting “Roma” to prevail on February 24. That support translates into leading odds of 4/1 for it to take the top prize at the Academy Awards.
Three of our Oscarologists favor SAG Awards winner “Black Panther” while one is expecting PGA champ “Green Book” to pull off an upset.

Congratulations to our Expert Perri Nemiroff (Collider) for an outstanding score of 83.33% when predicting the 2019 SAG Awards film winners on Sunday. She is best among 23 Experts, journalists who cover the entertainment industry throughout the year. She also has a great point score total of 2,368 by using the 500 super bets wisely. Over 3,100 people worldwide predicted these champs in all six movie categories chosen by voters from the Screen Actors Guild. Past winner Megan Mullally (“Will and Grace”) hosted the ceremony from downtown Los Angeles on TNT and TBS. Our top scorer had five of the categories correct, only missing Emily Blunt of “A Quiet Place” (supporting actress). That means she got such tough ones as “Black Panther” (ensemble) and Rami Malek of “Bohemian Rhapsody” (actor).

To really nail your Oscar predictions you don’t just need to get the lay of the land when it comes to Best Picture. You also need to know your stuff when it comes to Best Foreign Language Film, Best Documentary Feature, and Best Animated Feature, which are often notorious for leaving out perceived front-runners in favor of out-of-left-field inclusions. Gold Derby contributors Charles Bright and Riley Chow recently joined me for a slugfest to debate these tough-to-call races. Watch our video above.
See our slugfest predicting the eight below-the-line races.
Best Foreign Language Film seems like a race to see which four films will lose to Alfonso Cuaron‘s “Roma,” which is a strong contender not just for this award but for Best Picture after its multiple victories at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards. The other eight titles shortlisted by the academy are “Ayka,” “Birds of Passage,...

Should Timothee Chalamet be worried about his Oscar chances? After receiving a Best Actor nomination last year for “Call Me By Your Name” he looks like he’s on his way to a potential second bid this year for his supporting turn in “Beautiful Boy.” But as Gold Derby contributors Riley Chow, Rob Licuria, Amanda Spears and I point out in a recent slugfest on the acting races, he might be on shaky ground. Watch our entire video above.
Licuria points out that Chalamet “has been landing the right nominations throughout the season,” including recognition from SAG, Critics’ Choice, BAFTA and the Golden Globes. But that was also true of past contenders like Hong Chau in “Downsizing” (2017) and Daniel Bruhl in “Rush” (2013), who also had the right precursor support but didn’t end up with Oscar nominations. On the other hand, Licuria also notes the “leftover residual love from ‘Call Me By Your Name...
