Life comes at you fast. Once upon a time, actor Jesse Eisenberg wasn't known for anything more than his work as a scrawny character actor in movies like Noah Baumbach's "The Squid and the Whale" and Greg Mottola's "Adventureland." In fact, his biggest cause for concern in those days was beating the allegations that he was the same guy who played Napoleon Dynamite. And then "The Social Network" happened, which net him a Best Actor nomination and ultimately set him on track to become the latest actor-turned-writer/director with this year's brilliant "A Real Pain" (which premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival).
But one particularly polarizing role may have caused some serious bumps along the way -- his turn as Lex Luthor in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," which Eisenberg is now admitting set his career back quite significantly. The refreshingly candid remarks come from a recent...

Actor turned filmmaker Jesse Eisenberg is set to write and direct a musical comedy starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti.
Actor turned filmmaker Jesse Eisenberg’s next film, A Real Pain, isn’t due out until early 2025, but his film project after that has reportedly been set up already.
It’s said to be an untitled musical comedy starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti. With Wicked likely to whip up a storm at the box office this weekend (Wizard Of Oz reference!), musicals are clearly back in vogue among Hollywood studios.
As first published by Deadline, the synopsis for Eisenberg’s movie reads as follows:
The film follows a shy woman who is unexpectedly cast in a local production of an original musical. Under the spell of the strong-willed and enigmatic director, she loses herself in the role and the high-stakes world of this community theater production.

Gal Gadot has been in the industry for a while now but audiences and critics alike have been divided about her acting ability. The actress gained recognition through her portrayal of Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and later movies.
However, one action comedy put a blemish on her so-far-so-good filmography. The 2016 film Keeping Up with the Joneses experienced a disastrous reception at the box office and failed to create a substantial impact. Surprisingly, the lack of success was not due to the cast’s inability to perform, but due to the staleness of the script. Gadot especially managed to impress critics with her alluring and charming portrayal.
The polarizing reviews: Can she act?
Over the years, the audience’s views of Gal Gadot and her capability as an actress have taken a huge downslide. The actress aced her role of the suave and graceful Princess Diana...

This weekend, Jesse Eisenberg returns to the big screen in A Real Pain. The film, which he wrote, directs, and stars in, follows a man struggling to keep his emotions on check during a trip with his cousin. A Real Pain has drawn considerable praise for Eisenberg’s subdued directing, brilliant writing, and Kiernan Culkin’s livewire performance. It bodes well for Eisenberg, who has been one of indie films darling performers for years. To celebrate his latest career milestone, we’re highlighting seven of his best performances to date.
The Squid and the Whale (2005)
As a young actor, Jesse Eisenberg landed on many radars for his emotional performance in The Squid and the Whale. Told from the perspective of two children struggling with their parent’s divorce, Noah Baumbach gave Eisenberg a role that required incredible pathos. With several standout scenes that could have easily been accused of overacting,...

Jesse Eisenberg picked up the Indie Star Award at Poland’s American Film Festival and met with the local audience to talk about sophomore directorial effort “A Real Pain.”
“Two years ago, I was finishing the script. You start the very embarrassing process of begging producers to give you money to make it. When they asked me how I’d describe the movie, I told them the same thing: ‘I want to make an American indie film, but in Poland,’” he said.
“I grew up doing American independent films and loving American independent films, but I didn’t want to make another version of this intimate American ‘buddy movie.’ What I was trying to tell these financiers was that there hasn’t been a movie like this, about these two guys exploring their past, but set against the backdrop of this amazing, beautiful country. The path to Rick and Morty started with Crusader Rabbit and ran through Winky Dink.
14 ‘The Woody Woodpecker Show’ (1957)
Besides the classic animated shorts, they also filled time with live-action footage of Disney animators in their glorified sweatshops, and a voice actor riffing over newsreel footage, in character as Woody Woodpecker.
13 ‘The Ruff and Reddy Show’ (1957)
Named after 19th century Whig Party star Zachary Taylor, aka “Old Rough and Ready,” this show was about a smart cat and a dumb dog who never met a woman because the studio would only pay for two voice actors. It was the first-ever Hanna-Barbera series.
12 ‘Tom Terrific’ (1957)
Tom Terrific was a child superhero who could turn into any animal or vehicle he wanted. He lived alone in a treehouse (with his sentient but stupid dog), and didn’t fight crime, per se, but rather raged against the adults in his life. Sounds pretty bleak!

Since childhood, Jesse Eisenberg has been a prodigy in the arts. At age seven, he appeared in his first play, and by age 12, he was an understudy on Broadway in a Tennessee Williams drama. At age 16, he began writing screenplays, several of which were optioned by major studios, and by the time he was a high school senior, Eisenberg had landed his first co-starring role in a feature film — 2002’s “Roger Dodger.”
From there, his film career took off, leading to starring roles with filmmakers as diverse as Woody Allen and David Fincher. Eisenberg became a favorite with moviegoers with his comedic skill in such films as “Zombieland,” “Café Society” and “Adventureland.” And then came the critical acclaim with his dramatic performances in 2005’s “The Squid and the Whale,” 2015’s “The End of the Tour,” and particularly Fincher’s 2010 modern classic “The Social Network,” for which Eisenberg received Best Actor nominations from the Oscars,...

With the latest billion-dollar hit Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds has established himself as a brand in Hollywood. A decade ago, the actor had a very different career graph. He was starring in flops back-to-back and interestingly he noticed a pattern in these types of films. After starring in a 2013 supernatural action film that bombed at the box office, he decided to take a step back.

Stars: Conor Sherry, Gabriel Labelle, Mika Abdalla, Nick Robinson | Written and Directed by Adam Carter Rehmeier
Following the underseen Dinner In America, a punk-rock masterpiece with a heart of gold, writer/director Adam Carter Rehmeier crafts a nostalgic follow-up with Snack Shack. Set during the ‘90s summer, inseparable best friends A.J. (Conor Sherry) & Moose (Gabriel Labelle) have a moneymaking plan to sell home-brewed beer. After that falls apart once their parents find out, the pair change plans to run the local pool’s snack shack. Those plans for financial success are put at risk when they both fall for effortlessly cool lifeguard, Brooke (Mika Abdalla).
The yin/yang of this friendship is well established early on, as A.J. acts cautiously with a mindset of quitting while he’s ahead, while Moose is willing to take risks for the potential victory. With his actions repeatedly disappointing his parents, A.

In a world… in which movies are just as much products as they are art, studios need to sell the latest releases to the broadest possible audiences. That means that they not only need to craft trailers promoting the films, but they need to misrepresent what films are really about.
On a certain level, that tendency toward misrepresentation makes sense. Trailers only have a couple of minutes to get people interested in the film, and complex works of art don’t lend themselves to such simplicities.
That said, it’s hard to see a masterpiece reduced to just a few sizzle moments, trying their best to ensure that the audience won’t be surprised or challenged by what they’re about to see. Here are some of the worst offenders in cinema history, movies that ended up to be so much more than what these teasers promised.

When "Deadpool" opened to $132 million in North America over Valentine's Day weekend in 2016, everything changed for Ryan Reynolds. Up until that point of his career, he'd been an immensely appealing B-level star with A-list potential. His best shot at hitting the blockbuster big time came when he slipped on the power ring as Hal Jordan in 2011's "Green Lantern." When that not-as-bad-as-its-reputation-but-not-all-that-good-either $200 million gamble stalled out with a $220 million worldwide gross, Reynolds was back to being the wisecracking comedic engine of mostly ho-hum action movies and, on occasion, a very interesting actor in pretty good indie dramas.
That he hasn't made anything in that latter category of movies post-"Deadpool" is a bummer for those of us who think Reynolds has more to offer as a performer than a shotgun spray of smug quips in forgettable four-quadrant product like "Detective Pikachu" and "Free Guy." The "Deadpool" movies are clearly personal for Reynolds,...

Editor’s note: this list was originally published in July 2023. It has since been updated with new entries.
To quote Alice Cooper (and poorly paraphrase “High School Musical 2”), school’s out for summer. With Boppenheimer hitting air-conditioned theaters midway through July — just as countless actors and screenwriters head into the heat to join picket-lines in New York and Los Angeles — summer 2023 will no doubt prove a memorable one for Hollywood. What better time then to consider how the movies themselves represent the reason for the season?
The best summer vacation movies range in subject matter and can appeal to all sorts of different audiences. Kid-centric flicks, like “The Parent Trap,” and adult slashers, like the “Friday the 13th” films, explore the traditions and perils of sleep-away camp from spectacularly different view points. Meanwhile, road trip flicks, like the Audrey Hepburn-starring “Two for the Road” and Hindi film “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,...

Ryan Reynolds was born in Canada and started acting at a young age, landing a role on a teenage soap opera. He then proceeded to work in both Canadian and American television, ultimately finding minor fame on the moderately successful ABC sitcom “Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place.”
Movies followed with the low end of “Buying the Cow,” then a remake of “The In-Laws” and into bigger successes in “Blade: Trinity,” “Definitely Maybe,” and “Adventureland.” His career went into high gear by being cast as “Green Lantern” and starring opposite Sandra Bullock in “The Proposal.”
Reynolds managed to pull off the unthinkable in 2016 when he managed to get a Golden Globe nomination for Best Comedy/Musical Actor for “Deadpool.” The film had incredible box office returns, but it’s a rare achievement for a superhero role to bring major awards attention.

Kristen Stewart has always been interested in the world of fashion. Even back in her earlier years, Stewart saw what she wore as a form of artistic expression.
When she was first dabbling with popular fashion designers, though, she was seen as different than other celebrities who enjoyed the art of clothing. But this might’ve worked to her favor.

For actress Kristen Stewart, starring in “Twilight” has been both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, the worldwide popularity of the five-film vampire series helped to make Stewart one of the most recognizable actresses on the planet. Unfortunately, with that fame came the tabloids, and before long, Stewart became better known for being in gossip magazines than for her considerable skills as an actress, seemingly destined to be tagged forever as “that girl from ‘Twilight.'” Fortunately, a number of international directors such as Olivier Assayas and Pablo Larrain came to the rescue, looking past the gossip to see the potential and creating roles for Stewart that were finally worthy of her talents.
Stewart’s filmography encompasses a wide range of genres, from biopics and mother/daughter dramas (“Still Alice”) to romantic comedies and nail-biting thrillers (“Panic Room”). While she has inhabited a wide variety of characters,...

In 2024’s bizarre bid to become the year of the underwear, Kristen Stewart is the latest celeb to go pantsless. Since brief-focused looks debuted on runways last year, many stars have been spotted at fashion shows and red carpets sans trousers.
Most recently, Sydney Sweeney debuted bedazzled briefs at the Miu Miu presentation during Paris Fashion Week. Kiernan Shipka also wore underwear (cable knit with a matching cardigan) to the Chloé runway show. Now, Stewart has jumped on the trend, going pantless twice this March (so far). See her looks here:

On March 12, the Twilight star stepped out in New York City wearing cable-knit underwear and a camel-colored cropped shirt buttoned at the collar. Stewart waved to the paparazzi as she exited the building in the eye-catching ensemble, chosen with the help of her go-to stylist, Tara Swennen.

In what could almost be a weird pop-cultural physics phenomenon, people keep making youth nostalgia movies that highlight a particular moment, an iconic time period that everyone who grew up in it remembers with transcendent fondness — yet the distance between the moment and the movie commemorating it keeps getting longer and longer. “American Graffiti,” the movie that invented the genre, was set in 1962 and came out 11 years later, in 1973. “Dazed and Confused” was set in 1976 and came out 17 years later, in 1993. “Adventureland” was set in 1987 and came out 22 years later, in 2009. And now we have “Y2K,” an end-of-the-millennium high-school party movie that premiered last night at SXSW. It’s set on the last day (and the day after) of 1999, and it’s coming out 25 years later. When somebody ultimately makes a youth nostalgia movie set in 2024, it probably won’t come out until 2054.

The two stars had four films premiering between them in Utah, but the best performances came from Sebastian Stan and Saoirse Ronan, while a first-time director sold his horror film to Netflix for a cool $17m…
It’s been 15 years since the sweet, shaggy slacker romcom Adventureland played at the Sundance film festival – and if that may seem a mere blink of an eye to the small but ardent cult of millennial filmgoers who took the film intensely to heart, its two stars returned earlier this month to the snowy mountains of Utah to remind everyone just how long it’s been. With four films premiering between them, actors Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg were separately the talk of this year’s festival: at the opening ceremony he presented her, at the grand old age of 33, with the festival’s career-achievement Visionary award.

“Sundance is the fucking shit. I love being here.”
So said Kristen Stewart in closing her acceptance speech Thursday night after receiving a Visionary Award from the Sundance Film Festival. It was a mic drop moment if there ever was one, and it was timed perfectly, arriving during the Sundance Institute’s fundraising gala that served as a starry kickoff for this year’s edition. The official title of the event is the Opening Night Gala: Celebrating 40 Years Presented by Chase Sapphire, and it went down at the DeJoria Center in nearby Kamas, Utah.
At 33 years old, Stewart is already a Sundance veteran who has had 10 films screen at the festival over the years, and she’s back this year with two more: Sam and Andy Zuchero’s Love Me opposite Steven Yeun, and Rose Glass’ Love Lies Bleeding. Robert Downey Jr. trekked to Sundance Film Festival’s opening night gala to reveal that a “terrible tragedy” has befallen Christopher Nolan. But don’t worry about the filmmaker behind “Oppenheimer.”
His hardship is really just a bad case of the blues, and it’s because Nolan — as Downey explained on Thursday while bestowing Nolan with the first-ever Trailblazer Award — “has become recognizable on the street.”
According to Downey, the critical and commercial success of “Oppenheimer” means that Nolan can no longer fly under the radar. Casual moviegoers have started to spot the British director, and, as a result, “he recoils, as though from a hot flame, from this new and unwelcome reality.”
Well, Nolan may not be retreating from the spotlight anytime soon. The director, an awards season favorite, was lauded by Downey as an “enigmatic auteur” and “as independent a voice we’ve ever had in cinema.” But the actor,...

Christopher Nolan is like “a timber wolf,” said Robert Downey Jr., Nolan’s star in “Oppenheimer.” And in a funny yet sincere speech in which Downey teased and feted Nolan at Sundance’s opening night awards gala, he hailed Nolan “as independent a voice as ever existed in cinema while telling stories that remind us of the interdependency of the human experience.”
“Now that last line was so searingly sophisticated, I’m just going to let it hang there for a second,” Downey joked. “Damn, that just came to me!”
Downey said Nolan can accomplish this because his partner Emma Thomas “blocks for him,” challenges him, and reinforces his every decision. And in presenting Nolan Sundance’s first-ever Trailblazer Award on January 18, the first night of the 40th edition of the festival in Park City, he was in awe that he could deliver a film ahead of schedule and under...

“Thank you for lighting a fire under my ass,” Kristen Stewart told Sundance’s Opening Night gala tonight.
“Sundance is the f*cking sh*t!” she added taking the stage to receive the Visionary Award from her co-star of 3 films, Jesse Eisenberg. The honor for is for their work as an uncompromising artist in indie film, who also has a long history with the Park City fest.
Stewart is doing double duty here at the festival, starring in the Sam and Andy Zuchero acquistion title, Love Me, and A24’s Rose Glass directed genre title Love Lies Bleeding.
Eisenberg spoke about how he was struck by the emotion she brought to what was a brief driving scene in which he had one line, and she was all face on the set of Greg Mottola’s Adventureland. Eisenberg and Stewart also starred in Woody Allen’s Cafe Society and the action movie American Ultra.

Boogie Nights: Exarchou Doses Summertime Sadness in Achy Melodrama
For anyone who’s ever wondered what life might be like for employees at any tourist trap destination, Greek director Sofia Exarchou offers up something rather disconcerting with her sophomore film, Animal. Sure, there are other films exemplifying the tight-knit bond which exists between these makeshift families in carnivalesque environments, but these usually exist on categorical extremes. For every tantalizing toxic cousin of Nightmare Alley, there’s the sun-dappled sentiment of Adventureland (2009) or The Way Way Back (2013). Exarchou instead paints a painful character portrait of less easily defined ennui in the inherent stagnation of seasonal employment, the kind enhanced in settings intended for adult entertainment, where boundaries are easily blurred, breeding despair for participants who eventually are diminished by their self-inflicted purgatory.…...

Bill Hader appears on my screen from Los Angeles, unshaven, a little groggy and in an uncluttered white room. Faced with this pixelated version of him, I’m instantly reminded of his role in the 2008 Judd Apatow-produced romcom Forgetting Sarah Marshall, for which he appeared almost exclusively on video call, in the days before Zoom was a thing. “It was such a novelty back then,” he says, that furrowed brow unmistakeable. “It was like, ‘Whoa, this is new.’”

Finn Wolfhard is opening up about his “crazy whirlwind career” that came with starring in the cult-favorite Stranger Things as a teen, along with his plans post-series.
The It actor made his name in Hollywood in 2016, at the age of 13, with his role as Mike Wheeler in the Duffer brothers’ hit Netflix show. But in an interview with GQ magazine, published online Wednesday, he expressed the impacts of finding fame so young.
During the early years of his adolescence, he said he was fine and “did not talk about anything” because “there was no time, or at least we didn’t feel [there was] at the time.” But then at 15 or 16, the actor said he started having routine panic attacks.
“Everyone was like, ‘Look at him, he’s fine. He’s having the best time,’” he continued. “But in reality, I was probably also developing and things were happening in my brain...

When Wolfhard was feeling “really anxious and depressed” ahead of starring in Eisenberg’s directorial debut “When You Finish Saving the World,” the writer-director shared comforting advice. “[Eisenberg] was like, ‘Have you met me? I...
