Three years ago, when Conan O’Brien retired from late-night, it was a very different world. Max was known as HBO Max. TBS was still releasing original series. David Zaslav had just been announced as the CEO of what would become Warner Bros. Discovery. Change was in the air, and now many, many changes have happened.
But Conan remains a constant. Before “Conan” (the late-night series on TBS) welcomed its last guests, its host had already launched a wildly successful podcast, “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend.” He soon sold his booming digital media business to SiriusXM for $150 million, produced stand-up specials (“Chris Redd: Why Am I Like This?” and “Gary Gulman: Born on Third Base”) and podcast series (from Rob Lowe and Andy Richter), and acted in everything from “Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain” and “Murderville” to “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” and “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On.

Acting challenges on Ru Paul’s Drag Race have a very storied her-story on the show. while there have been some amazing performances on the show there have also have had some truly terrible ones such as the Lady McBitch challenge during season seven! However, I have to say that last week’s improvised whodunnit ‘forensic queens’ was one of my all-time favourites. Following in the footsteps of the Netflix original series Murderville or the highly successful Jury Duty show, the queens of All-Stars eight had to improvise their way through a series of scenes. In a shocking surprise, the two highlights of this challenge were Lala (who claimed her first win of the season this episode) and Jessica Wilde, who both delivered hilarious portrayals of the crooked security guard and snubbed All-Star queen respectively. Before we could even get to the challenge however there were buckets full of drama...

The TV Academy has denied the petition for Apple’s “Schmigadoon!” to move from submitting for outstanding comedy series to the scripted variety category, Variety has learned exclusively.

The Sharpie Is Mightier: ‘Pissed Off’ Writers with Clever Signs Make Noise from the WGA Picket Lines
“No pages without fair wages!” “Don’t you want to know how ‘The Last of Us’ ends?” “Please don’t make me have to move back to Ohio!”
The WGA Strike of 2023 is now in full swing, and the writers who formed picket lines Tuesday afternoon across Los Angeles and New York City are mad as hell. Speaking of lines, those clever ones above were just a few of the phrases written on the poster boards of Hollywood’s writers as they protested what they feel to be unfair wages, a devaluing of their work by the studios, networks, and streamers, and an “existential” fight for entertainment writing as a viable profession. If you believe the pen to be mightier, maybe don’t mess with writers.

In each round, contestants choose a pair of entrepreneurs and learn about their unique, and often bizarre, products through visuals, a custom-made infomercial exclusively produced for Snake Oil, and by quizzing the business representative themselves. With too much television, it’s almost impossible to view every piece of content that is up for consideration for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards nominations. With increases in submissions, including 171 drama series, 118 comedies and 61 limited or anthologies. Not to mention the hundreds of actors angling for very few spots. In anticipation of Tuesday’s noms, Variety’s editors have curated its own dream ballot for this year’s television achievements in selected categories.
At Variety, we also love consistency. With our ballots, we wanted to promote having 10 options in the top series categories (please do this TV Academy) and uniformity in the acting races. In the acting categories, we proceeded with eight in each. We hope the TV Academy adopts some of these trends in the future. With this large boom in television, there should be more options in the respective lineups.

Three years after Bill Hader became a two-time consecutive Emmy winner for “Barry,” his fellow “Saturday Night Live” alumnus, Jason Sudeikis, is hoping to do the same as the star of “Ted Lasso.” But with “Barry” having returned from its hiatus, Sudeikis may be directly challenged by Hader in defending his Best Comedy Actor title. Scroll down to see our 2022 Emmy predictions for Lead Actor (Comedy Series).
Sudeikis and Hader could also be joined in the 2022 lineup by current “SNL” cast member and “Kenan” star Kenan Thompson, who just lost to Sudeikis last year. Sudeikis could also once again face Anthony Anderson (“Black-ish”), who has been nominated every year since 2015 but has yet to win. The remaining two 2021 contenders, Michael Douglas (“The Kominsky Method”) and William H. Macy (“Shameless”), are out of the running since their shows concluded before last June.

When Krister Johnson brought on NFL running back Marshawn Lynch as a guest star for the improvised murder mystery-comedy, “Murderville,” no one had any idea what to expect. He was very quiet when he met him at the fitting but on set things changed very quickly. “He bounces into his first scene and is asking to change his name to Baggobich and he’s cussing and excited. After his taping, Will Arnett came back to video village and we felt like we captured lightening in a bottle,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). He did cause a bit of concern when he unexpectedly tackled Rob Huebel during a take and Johnson thought Lynch may have crushed his windpipe. “As soon as the take ended, I ran out to Rob and I was like, ‘Are you okay,’ and he was like, ‘I’m fine.

When TV academy voters sit down to fill out their 2022 Emmy nominations ballots, they have to consider 118 shows for Best Comedy Series; this is up by 50 contenders from last year. Since 2017, voters have not had to limit their choices to just 10 shows. The TV academy tells its members to “vote for as many achievements in this category that you have seen and feel are worthy of a nomination.”
Reigning Best Comedy Series winner “Ted Lasso” is back to try and defend its title, while six of its seven 2021 rivals have shots at redemption since they also aired during the eligibility period of June 1, 2021 to May 31, 2022. Those half dozen shows are “Black-ish,” “Cobra Kai,” “Emily in Paris,” “The Flight Attendant,” “Hacks,” and “PEN15.” The lone 2021 nominee missing from this ballot is “The Kominsky Method,” which ended its three-season run last May. Netflix’s “Murderville” is angling for major Emmy attention with the streamer submitting the show for consideration in the variety sketch series categories, where it would potentially face-off against the likes of “A Black Lady Sketch Show” and reigning champ, “Saturday Night Live.” However, Variety has learned exclusively that the Television Academy deemed the Krister Johnson-developed show a comedy series, where it will now compete with shows such as “Abbott Elementary,” “Ted Lasso” and its streaming counterparts “Cobra Kai” and “The Chair.”

Murder mystery is having a moment.
Maybe it’s because the pandemic has us glued to our couches, hankering to solve puzzles. Maybe it’s because the weekly episode drops have overtaken the once-dominant binge format. Maybe it’s because in 2019, “Knives Out” grossed more than 300 million at the global box office and Adam Sandler’s “Murder Mystery” broke Netflix’s opening weekend records.
The past few years alone saw the rise of premium streaming mysteries “The Afterparty,” “Mare of Easttown,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “The Undoing” and “The Flight Attendant” — as well as genre subverters “Murderville” and “The White Lotus.”
While the reason why this genre is dominating our television sets and Twitter feeds is perhaps a mystery in itself, showrunners of the season’s top shows attribute their successes to the golden era of streaming, the rise of premium television and — according to “The Afterparty” creator Chris Miller...

Last Year’s Winner: “Saturday Night Live”
Still Eligible: Yes.
Hot Streak: “Saturday Night Live” has a five year winning streak right now, benefitting from the split that happened in the Variety Series category in 2015 (it became the Variety Talk and Variety Sketch categories). However, when that split first happened, it was Comedy Central that had the initial winning streak with “Inside Amy Schumer” winning in 2015, and “Key & Peele” winning in 2016, so NBC’s long-running late night variety series is not unbeatable.
Notable Ineligible Series: “Documentary Now!” (Season 4 was not eligible); “I Think You Should Leave” (submitted as a Short Form Comedy Series); “The Kids in the Hall” (was not submitted)
This article will be updated throughout the season, along with all our predictions, so make sure to keep checking IndieWire for the latest news from the 2022 Emmys race. The nomination round of voting will take place from June...

Meghan Markle’s first animated series under Archewell Productions officially was given the ax by Netflix as the streamer re-evaluates its upcoming slate amid an exodus of subscribers.

Murderville is perhaps one of the best comedy shows to come out of Netflix this year. The concept is so entertainingly unique too. Murderville‘s premise is simple: the show, starring Will Arnet as a gritty detective trying to solve a new murder every episode, partners up with a celebrity guest. The catch? The guest isn’t given a script and is tasked with improvising their way towards solving the crime. The first season of the show saw performances from some of the funniest people in Hollywood, including Conan O’Brien, Marshawn Lynch, Kumail Nanjiani, Ken Jeong, and Annie Murphy. Hollywood superstar Sharon Stone

The mystery of the greatest detectives in movie and television history is not difficult to crack, because most likely you already know their names. These gumshoes let themselves be known. They have reputations. They love the game, whether that game is solving a crime or some other kind of seemingly impossible question. Not all of fiction's best sleuths are your run-of-the-mill private detectives, after all, and not all mysteries are of the murder variety. This is an incredibly popular genre. It's why we like true crime or even improv shows like "Murderville" on Netflix. The best characters are detectives.

One of the greatest parties I have ever experienced took place just under ten years ago when the youth club I attended at the time organised a murder mystery event. Prior to the evening, every person was given a character pack that contained details of the evening, character information costume ideas, key plot points and important information that would be revealed at certain points in the event! We had to make sure that we fully read and understood all the information in the pack, as this would allow the evening to function as it was intended to. The party was set on a boat where the captain of the show was mysteriously murdered and so one of the passengers had to take over and delivered everyone back to where they came from. Every other person had to go around chatting to everyone to try and figure out who had committed the horrendous crime.
