Matt’s Favorites of 2024
Image
How Is It The End Of The Year Already? Time, y’all. Life’s proverbial hourglass turns over again, and with it comes another fresh batch of horror titles ready to rock our worlds. But! Before we start digging into 2025’s crop, Daily Dead has once again generously given me a space to highlight my favorite horror “things” of the year.

I’m going to stick with movies because while every year is a good year for horror movies (which I had to remind doubters yet again), 2024 was a Really good year for horror movies. In trying to whittle down a Top 10, I stared at double the amount of titles I thought deserved recognition. Therefore, I’m sticking to the screen — I need every single slot.

10. A Quiet Place Day One

In a year of surprising prequels, A Quiet Place: Day One is my favorite.

This Forgotten Ridley Scott Horror Thriller With 53% on Rotten Tomatoes Is One of Mike Flanagan’s Favorites
Image
Mike Flanagan recently made a sci-fi splash with his script for "Stowaway," the incredible Kate Siegel-directed closer in V/H/S/Beyond. While their vision of life inside a UFO is startlingly original, one of Flanagan's favorite horror movies may have provided some inspiration: Phoenix Forgotten, a 2017 found footage feature produced by Ridley Scott. The movie offers a tricky blend of fiction and facts about the Phoenix Lights sightings, a real unexplained event witnessed by thousands.

Phoenix Forgotten plays like a sci-fi sister to The Blair Witch Project, with its tale of teen documentarists who vanish while trying to film a close encounter. However, Phoenix Forgotten is more complex, utilizing real news footage and interviews with real Phoenix Lights witnesses, and building a poignant family drama around the fictional main characters. It's easy to see why Mike Flanagan would be attracted to Phoenix Forgotten, since it is, like much of his own work,...

Early Found Footage Film ‘The McPherson Tape’ Remains Chillingly Effective Decades Later
Image
The Legend of Boggy Creek. Cannibal Holocaust. Man Bites Dog. These are the usual suspects whenever someone brings up the origins of modern-day found footage. However, it was a long road full of cinematic experiments before these films would give rise to the movie that popularized the genre – The Blair Witch Project. After all, before Myrick and Sanchez’s film, most proto-found-footage productions were more interested in emulating documentaries and news footage than recreating amateur recordings that just happened to capture something creepy.

I say “most” because there is one notable exception. An infamous film so dedicated to its DIY presentation that many viewers were originally unaware that it was meant to be a film at all. Naturally, I’m referring to Dean Alioto’s iconic UFO Abduction (also known as The McPherson Tape), a misunderstood classic that I believe started all the familiar tropes of contemporary found footage over...

V/H/S/8 announced for a 2025 release
Image
The found footage horror anthology series V/H/S was launched in 2012, with the sequels V/H/S/2 and V/H/S: Viral following in 2013 and 2014. There was a spin-off called SiREN in 2016, then the franchise went dormant for a few years… before being revived by the Shudder streaming service, which has had great success delivering a new V/H/S movie every year. There was V/H/S/94 in 2021, V/H/S/99 in 2022, V/H/S/85 in 2023, and V/H/S/Beyond earlier this month. There will be no lack of V/H/S next year, as our friends at Bloody Disgusting has confirmed that Shudder officially announced during the New York Comic Con that V/H/S/8 is in the works and will be receiving a 2025 release. No further details have been revealed.

Bruce Willis Predicted The Blair Witch Project Six Years Before Its Release
Image
The Simpsons has long been touted as a sitcom capable of predicting the future, given that certain events seen in the series have eerily come to life years later in some form or fashion, but Bruce Willis? Sure, he had superhuman abilities in Unbreakable, but clairvoyance wasnt one of them. However, the megastar predicted one of the biggest movies to ever hit the horror genre six years before it debuted in theaters, which then set off a chain of events that would change the industry as we know it.

In an unearthed video posted on X by director Scott Derrickson, Willis is shown on the set of Pulp Fiction in 1993 talking into a camcorder about the camcorder itself, and how the device would be used in the future. He says, "Some day in the next five years, someones going to take one of these and make a feature film with it,...

‘V/H/S/Beyond’ Review (Shudder)
Image
Written by Jordan Downey, Kevin Stewart, Virat Pal, Evan Dickson, Justin Martinez, Benjamin A. Turner, Christian and Justin Long, Mike Flanagan | Directed by Jay Cheel, Jordan Downey, Virat Pal, Justin Martinez, Christian and Justin Long, Kate Siegel

The seventh instalment in the long-running found footage franchise, V/H/S/Beyond, sees the series change its focus somewhat, from straight forward horror to a science fiction/horror hybrid. While it doesn’t quite follow Jason and the Leprechaun into space, most of the segments do involve aliens or other sci-fi elements.

Directed by Jay Cheel the film’s wraparound “Abduction, Adduction” begins that trend as Mitch Horowitz, host of Alien Encounters: Fact or Fiction, hosts an investigation of a pair of VHS tapes allegedly found at a flea market, and said to be proof of alien visitation.

That segues into “Stork”, directed by Jordan Downey who co-wrote it with Kevin Stewart based on artwork by Oleg Vdovenko.

Forget Shorts, Kate Siegel Is Itching for Feature Filmmaking After 'V/H/S/Beyond'
Image
After making her debut behind the camera in V/H/S/Beyond, the multitalented Kate Siegel officially has the directing bug. The star of Hush, The Haunting of Hill House, The Fall of the House of Usher, and other projects collaborated with her horror auteur husband Mike Flanagan in a new way to create "Stowaway." The short film is a haunting alien horror segment starring Alanah Pearce as a U.F.O. truther documenting her findings in the Mojave Desert. Helming a small piece of a larger sci-fi anthology, however, isn't enough to sate her creative desires. Speaking with Perri Nemiroff for Collider Ladies Night, she said she's ready to move on to something bigger and more ambitious as a burgeoning filmmaker.

Kate Siegel Explains Why Alanah Pearce Was Perfect to Lead Her V/H/S/Beyond Segment
Image
Kate Siegel has spent a lot of time in front of the camera for her husband and frequent collaborator Mike Flanagan's projects, from Hush to The Fall of the House of Usher. With V/H/S/Beyond, however, she had the chance to create her own horror magic and find a star that she'd resonate with for her directorial debut segment, "Stowaway." Her ultimate choice to play Halley in the haunting alien body horror segment was a slightly unconventional one in multi-talented voice actress, YouTube star, and journalist Alanah Pearce, also known as Charalanahzard. Though it marked her first lead film role, she had the full confidence of Siegel from the beginning and it more than paid off to the point that the first-time director saw her as almost too good for her job.

The Best Modern Horror Anthologies You Can Watch And Read Right Now
Image
Ah, October. The magical time of year when even the most horror-averse moviegoers pop open their watchlist in search of some new scary thing to watch. And while "Terrifier 3" will certainly be the highest-grossing horror film of October, the early contender for October's best new scary movie is "V/H/S/Beyond," the latest entry in the "V/H/S" series. With the introduction of a cohesive central theme — and a handful of emerging horror directors giving each segment their all — "V/H/S/Beyond" has restored the franchise to its former glory and reminded us why horror anthologies can be such a fun way to tell a story.

But if "V/H/S/Beyond" represents a resurgence for the cinematic horror anthology, it's not the only one. This has been a banner year for horror anthologies across all mediums, with new collections and series dominating the shelves of your local comic and book stores. In fact, let's make a...

All 6 Segments In V/H/S/Beyond, Ranked
Image
The found footage horror anthology V/H/S/Beyond is split into six segments, but not all of them are as entertainingly terrifying as the rest. V/H/S/Beyond is the seventh installment in the V/H/S franchise, and it makes a name for itself by focusing its horror on tales of extraterrestrial life and aliens. That means its segments can range in scope from intergalactic travel to a single, strange doggy daycare, and it also means the film can vary significantly from segment to segment.

V/H/S/Beyond has seven directors, though there are only six segments, as the segment "Fur Babies" was co-directed by Christian and Justin Long. Each of the filmmakers took a very different approach to their short films, and the result is a varied and surprising anthology. V/H/S/Beyond also had a massive cast, one that changed considerably between segments. Any movie that has as much variety in tone, subject, and style as V/H/S/Beyond does,...

You Will Never Believe Kate Siegel's Original Idea For V/H/S/Beyond
Image
Kate Siegel is a genius. There, we said it, and its a fact that we can all agree on. So, when it was revealed that shed be making her directorial debut in the latest installment in the V/H/S anthology film series, V/H/S/Beyond, we were excited to see what shed come up with and she did not disappoint. Titled Stowaway, Siegels entry, which was penned by her frequent collaborator and husband, Mike Flanagan, centered around a womans experience with extraterrestrial life forms after searching for them in the Mojave Desert. Each of the stories this time around was sci-fi horror leaning, as opposed to the more typical horror fare of the past. With free rein over what kind of story she could tell, the floodgates of possibility were open for the first-time director, which proved to be equal parts freeing and mind-scattering.

‘Live and Let Dive” – How That Intense ‘V/H/S/Beyond’ Skydiving Segment Came Together [Spoiler Interview]
Image
Now streaming on Shudder is V/H/S/Beyond, which pushes the popular anthology franchise firmly into sci-fi territory with new bloodcurdling tapes that explore everything from aliens to horrific science experiments run amok. Among them is Justin Martinez’s high-octane skydiving horror segment with an alien twist, “Live and Let Dive.”

Martinez, one of the founders of the filmmaking collective known as Radio Silence, has been with the franchise since the start, having co-directed and handled VFX on the segment “10/31/98” on V/H/S. The filmmaker/VFX artist lent his VFX talents to the last three entries of the franchise and served as VFX supervisor on V/H/S/85 and V/H/S/99. For V/H/S/Beyond, Martinez conceived of his intense segment’s story with writer Ben Turner and makes his solo V/H/S directorial debut, putting his VFX and anthology experience to thrilling use.

The segment sees a group of friends embark on a skydiving trip to celebrate a birthday,...

V/H/S – Ranking the 7 Anthology Horror Films
Image
One of the most unique franchises to emerge in the last fifteen years, V/H/S feels like an indefinite horror franchise. After enough of the filmmakers broke through in the mainstream, other emerging voices have been eager to add their names to the franchise. Like Punk Goes Pop or And1 Mixtape for horror, the series has become a scouting ground for the next great horror filmmakers. With the arrival of V/H/S/Beyond, we’re ranking the films of the franchise. Within each, we also do a mini-ranking of the shorts, so keep an eye out for your favorite shorts.

7. V/H/S: Viral (2014)

While there are moments of Viral that stand out to this day, the overall style and stories rarely live up to the premise. Outside of this franchise, some segments would feel like a great little horror entry, but when the footage does not make sense as something that might come from a VHS,...

V/H/S/Beyond Cast & Character Guide
Image
The horror anthology movie V/H/S/Beyond features a huge cast of characters, and the nature of its found-footage format makes it hard to identify all the actors. V/H/S/Beyond has seven directors and far more cast members, so finding out who plays which character can be quite a challenge. The fact that the movie is split into six segments also makes it harder to identify actors, as each segment only lasted about 20 minutes. Given the performances in V/H/S/Beyond, however, these names are ones to remember.

V/H/S/Beyond has found quite a bit of success, and it's partly thanks to the huge number of talented actors who contributed to the project. With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 90%, V/H/S/Beyond is perfect to watch while waiting for the next big horror film. Some of the actors in the film could well become the next big names in horror, and it's worth getting to know them.

New 90% Rt Horror Movie Is Terrific To Watch While Waiting For Mike Flanagans Next Stephen King Adaptation
Image
While still waiting for Mike Flanagans The Life of Chuck movie to hit theaters in summer 2025, the horror auteur has a new horror film available on streaming, V/H/S/Beyond, to watch in the meantime. Flanagan has directed and written some of the most popular and critically adored horror series and movies of the past decade, with hits like The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, Hush, and Geralds Game standing out among his work. Therefore, its no surprise that his adaptation of Stephen Kings The Life of Chuck story is among the most anticipated upcoming film releases.

Though the film premiered to warm reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024, currently holding an 85% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences have to wait until summer 2025 for The Life of Chucks theatrical release. Considering Flanagans last directorial release was in fall 2023 with Netflixs The Fall of the House of Usher show,...

Making her directorial debut for “V/H/S/Beyond” with the segment “Stowaway,” Kate Siegel knows she’s asking the world to see her differently. She just doesn’t want to think about it.

“I find it easy to talk about my acting, and I find it easy to talk about filmmaking, but I find it hard to talk about my place in the industry because I don’t want a sense of that,” Siegel told IndieWire. “I can’t allow that to get inside or it might take root and grow a really nasty tree.”

As an actress, Siegel has been there before. She’s known for frequently starring in her husband Mike Flanagan’s work, collaborating with him on projects like “Ouija: Origin of Evil,” “The Haunting of Hill House,” and “Hush,” which she also co-wrote. That success came at a cost for Siegel, who rose to fame against sexist bullying...

V/H/S/Beyond Review: A Fantastic New Entry
Image
Plot: Six bloodcurdling tapes unleash horror in a sci-fi inspired hellscape, pushing the boundaries of fear and suspense.

Review: While the last few entries in the V/H/S series have covered specific years like 1999, 1994, and 1985. I’m glad to see the series leaving behind the year-specific branding, and therefore opening the story up to more possibilities. As great as some of those segments were, others felt very constrained by the time. In V/H/S/Beyond, the found VHS tapes claim to prove the existence of extraterrestrial life. But it’s not just aliens, as they take aim at robots and weird taxidermists as well. And it may be my favorite entry yet.

As someone who finds alien stories to be boring and very samey, I wasn’t entirely sold on the concept of Beyond initially. But thankfully there’s enough variety to keep things interesting. The wraparound story does a good job of...

Video Interview: Director Kate Siegel and Star Alanah Pearce Discuss Their V/H/S/Beyond Segment “Stowaway”
Image
Now streaming on Shudder as the perfect early Halloween treat for found footage fans, V/H/S/Beyond is brimming with mind-bending tales of sci-fi terror from a team of talented filmmakers including Kate Siegel, who makes her directorial debut with "Stowaway." Written by Mike Flanagan and starring Alanah Pearce as an ambitious freelance reporter investigating mysterious lights in the desert sky, "Stowaway" takes a haunting look at the costly price of capturing proof of extraterrestrial life, as well as the gruesome side of space travel when one isn't prepared for it.

To celebrate the release of V/H/S/Beyond, Daily Dead recently had the pleasure of talking with Kate and Alanah about collaborating on the thought-provoking and eerily innovative "Stowaway," including the creative freedom of the found footage format, the sci-fi influences of films such as Contact and The Fly (as well as Stephen King's short story "The Jaunt"), the adventures of filming in the desert,...

Kate Siegel on Her Trippy ‘V/H/S/Beyond’ Film, Real-Life Alien Theories and the Joy of Working With Husband Mike Flanagan
Image
Kate Siegel is happy to get very real about extraterrestrial life very quickly. When asked if she believes in aliens, she offers a specific and chilling response.

“I’m a huge sci-fi reader…Ray Bradbury is one of my favorite authors of all time,” she says. “In the world right now there’s a lot of discourse about aliens being real. The needle is turning towards, ‘Yes, aliens exist.’ It’s a matter of when and where we will contact them, and not if they exist. I imagine that aliens are here on this planet and we’ll end up realizing it’s something obvious, like an octopus or a fungi structure is actually an alien that had been here forever. I think the most terrifying realization would be that they were under our noses all the time.”

This analysis makes Siegel the perfect contributor to “V/H/S/Beyond,” the seventh chapter in the horror anthology series,...

All 7 V/H/S Movies, Ranked From Worst To Best
Image
Any horror franchise that sticks around for more than a handful of entries becomes an institution by default. And few long-running horror franchises have provided genre fans with such a rollercoaster as "V/H/S," perhaps because each movie in the series feels like an unpredictable theme park ride in its own sick, twisted, ambitious way.

The first "V/H/S" film, released in 2012, laid out the endlessly adaptable format: a horror anthology consisting of "found footage" shorts, each of them directed by a different filmmaker, with only a thin (if that) thread connecting them all. Really, each "V/H/S" segment is an excuse for a director to cut loose, to run wild, and to tell a brisk, violent, sometimes funny and sometimes disturbing tale of terror. The only real rule is that it has to be found footage, but even that is malleable. Stories in the series are told from camcorders, GoPros,...

‘V/H/S/Beyond’ Endings Explained And All Six Short Films Summary
Image
The new film streaming on Shudder, V/H/S/Beyond, is a rather interesting addition to the otherwise mediocre V/H/S series of films. Presented in the usual found footage style that is characteristic of the franchise, this new film tells six unrelated stories, with each pretending to have been shot by some character in it using a VHS camcorder. The only common element among the different stories is the presence of other-worldly beings, and V/H/S/Beyond does a good job overall in playing with the very human intrigue about extraterrestrial life.

The Greatest Horror Movie Of The Century So Far Is Inside Another Horror Movie
Image
Anthology films have become synonymous with the expression "mixed bag," as it's incredibly difficult to bring in multiple different directors with distinct voices to create short films and expect there to be an equal level of quality or tone. In my opinion, that's part of the fun. An anthology film gives me the chance to micro-dose an experience of a time gone by, where I'd agonize over VHS box cover art in the hopes that whatever I brought home would become my new favorite movie. If it didn't, that's okay, because I could just move on to the next one. The "V/H/S" films capture that experience, and every so often, a segment transcends its place within the anthology and becomes something singular. There are plenty of "V/H/S" segments that I adore and can watch on repeat without ever tiring, but there will always only be one "Safe Haven.

V/H/S/Beyond Interview: Director Kate Siegel And Their Star Alanah Pearce
V/H/S/Beyond (2024)
With the streaming premiere of V/H/S/Beyond coming up this Friday we were fortunate to spend a moment speaking Kate Siegel, director of the segment, the sci-fi horror short Stowaway. We were joined by their lead actress and a multi-hyphanite herself, Alanah Pearce. Watch as I yammer on with two ladies who know their stuff, who are massively more learned, intelligent and professional than I am. You know that feeling when you're speaking with someone and you think, I could learn an awful lot from this person? Yeah, these two gave me that feeling.  Kate speaks about why now was the time to make her directorial debut, what her influences were when making this short (avoiding one that would give away the ending - no spoilers!), the...

V/H/S/Beyond's Kate Siegel & Alanah Pearce On The Importance Of Ambition And Creating Space On A Low Budget
Image
After years of acclaim in front of the camera and writing in the horror genre, Kate Siegel is finally making her directorial debut with V/H/S/Beyond's "Stowaway", and bringing Alanah Pearce along with her. Siegel is best known for her frequent collaborations with her husband, Mike Flanagan, having first appeared in his 2013 horror movie Oculus before going on to hold bigger roles in Gerald's Game, Netflix's The Haunting anthology series, Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher. Beyond her work with Flanagan, Siegel also led the twisty Netflix thriller Hypnotic and had supporting roles in The Wrath of Becky and HBO's The Time Traveler's Wife.

Pearce, on the other hand, is best known for her work in the world of video game journalism, having begun in her home country of Australia by working for close to a dozen outlets, including Impulse Gamer and the BBC,...

How Horror-Streamer Shudder Is Gearing Up for Halloween
Image
If you’re looking for someone to curate programming at your horror streaming service, hire the guy with the trio of “Halloween 3: Season of the Witch” (1982) masks tatted on his forearm. Sam Zimmerman was built — or at least inked — for the Shudder job.

This is Zimmerman’s time of year — and it’s extra special in 2024. September and December both have Friday the 13th dates, perfect bookends for Shudder’s supersized Season of Screams. During the same window, Zimmerman is moving his young family onto what he described as the Halloween block in his new (and quaint) town. Quite the Halloween for this guy, both professionally and personally.

With all due respect to AMC+, Shudder is the standout AMC Networks streaming service (of the many we don’t feel like counting right now), and the Season of Screams will pack the app with film releases, series, specials, and live watch parties.

V/H/S/Beyond Fantastic Fest Review — Sci-Fi Horror Anthology is Franchise’s Best
Image
The V/H/S franchise started in 2012 and fizzled out after three entries, but Shudder’s relaunch in 2021 proved popular enough to make a new anthology horror flick a yearly October tradition. This year’s release, V/H/S/Beyond, is incredibly refreshing, taking the franchise in a very different direction to exciting and gripping results.

V/H/S/Beyond Review

While the past few entries of V/H/S have all been centered around a specific year, Beyond is (for the most part) focused on sci-fi and aliens. While it’s less of a unique concept — there have been plenty of sci-fi/horror anthologies — the team of filmmakers that have been assembled for V/H/S/Beyond has knocked it out of the park, delivering one of the best entries not just in the franchise but in the genre as a whole.

The Real Story Behind The V/H/S Horror Movies
Image
The concept of a haunted or cursed object goes deep into the human race's collective memory. Ever since we were barely bipedal Cro-Magnons, we learned that there were certain things we should not touch or even look at, lest we encounter danger as a result. As our minds and awareness expanded, such deep seated fears extended out toward the supernatural, and we began entertaining the idea that such things as books, paintings, music, and eventually cinema could somehow be cursed. While these fears are still alive and well in the digital space, warning us against clicking on mysterious hyperlinks, there's still a certain je ne sais quoi to allegedly cursed physical media.

When the "V/H/S" franchise began in 2012, the filmmakers behind it capitalized on this latent fear of ours, providing just enough hints and allusions as to why a series of VHS tapes seen in the films might contain eerie,...

Mike Flanagan May Not Repeat His 87% Rt Hit For A Long Time Due To Stephen King Movies & Horror Reboot
Image
Filmmaker Mike Flanagan may not go back to the well that created his horror hit Midnight Mass for quite some time. The show, which he created and directed, was a horror miniseries that starred an ensemble cast that included Kate Siegel, Zach Gilford, Igby Rigney, Kristin Lehman, Samantha Sloyan, Rahul Kohli, Annabeth Gish, Alex Essoe, Matt Biedel, Michael Trucco, Henry Thomas, and, Hamish Linklater, many of whom have collaborated with Flanagan on other projects. Midnight Mass was a critical smash success, earning a Certified Fresh 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes and going on to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy.

The Mike Flanagan Netflix horror project is one of many well-regarded works the filmmaker has helmed over the course of his career, the majority of which have been in the horror genre. In fact, over the course of his career, he has never directed anything that has earned a splat on Rotten Tomatoes,...

Kate Siegel Opens up About Her Make-Or-Break V/H/S/Beyond Moment
Kate Siegel
When Kate Siegel set out to make her directorial debut in the upcoming anthology film, V/H/S/Beyond, she did so with a skys-the-limit mindset. She was already going as big as possible with a sci-fi tale penned by her frequent collaborator and husband, Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep), so something as silly as a budget wasnt going to stop Siegel from making the most incredible UFO story fans of the franchise have ever seen. Siegels installment, titled Stowaway, follows Alanah Pearces Halle Halley, a mother and physicist whose UFO dreams come to life when she stumbles upon a mysterious craft in the middle of the desert. After crawling inside the ship, all hell breaks loose for Halle, and Siegel wanted to capture every ounce of the chaos.
