Kevin Costner starred in the title role in the 1991 blockbuster film, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Costner was brutally trolled for his performance due to his accent, but the film still made huge bucks for the producers. Interestingly, Costner was in talks with 20th Century Fox to star in another Robin Hood movie directed by Die Hard fame John McTiernan. Morgan Creek Entertainment, who produced the 1991 movie, used a trick to poach Costner from the other Robin Hood movie.

Morgan Creek brought in Kevin Reynolds as the director of the film. Reynolds’ directorial debut was the 1985 film Fandango, which gave Costner his first starring role. Reynolds and Costner began a life-long friendship after working on the Steven Spielberg-produced film.

In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Captain's Holiday", Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) was forced to take a vacation on the sexed-up beach resort planet of Risa where his impishly playful crew hoped he would have a drink, get laid, and return to the job less stern and more relaxed. Picard, a studious and intellectual fellow, would have been more content drinking tea and reading James Joyce's "Ulysses" in a dark room.
Luckily, Risa proves to be more exciting than Picard realized. He had no interest in beach shenanigans, but he did fall into the company of the utterly dazzling Indiana-Jone-type adventurer Vash (Jennifer Hetrick), a roguish tomb raider. Picard and Vash end up having to protect a rare, powerful artifact from time-traveling Vorgons, and fall in lust as a result. Picard returns to the Enterprise more relaxed and with a new romantic interest in the back of his mind.

For years, rights issues have held up updated video releases of James Cameron’s Aliens, The Abyss, and True Lies, with the latter two features skipping Blu-ray entirely. At last, all three have come to 4K Uhd, and their joint release allows one to better appreciate the unexpected connections that link these otherwise completely distinct features.
On a basic level, all three films, covering less than a decade from 1986 to 1994, chart one of the most meteoric career rises in Hollywood history—one that you can see in their exponentially increasing budgets and scale. Aliens, made in the wake of Cameron’s breakout success of 1984’s The Terminator, was produced for a paltry $18 million, not much more than the $11 million allocated to Ridley Scott’s Alien nearly a decade earlier. But Cameron, who cut his teeth in Roger Corman’s micro-budget talent incubator, knew how to stretch a dollar to its maximum use.

"Frasier" had a bevy of guest stars throughout its original eleven-season run, but you might not recognize some of them on first watch. That's because many of the most famous actors to appear on the beloved sitcom did so in voice only, calling into psychologist Frasier Crane's (Kelsey Grammer) Seattle radio show for all manner of life advice. Casting a celebrity who viewers never actually see felt like a new gimmick when the series first premiered, and it's frankly still a rarity now.
In an oral history of the series published by Vanity Fair in 2018, series co-creators Peter Casey and David Lee, casting director Jeff Greenberg, and director Jimmy Burrows talked about how the call-in guest stars idea originated, who showed up on the other end of the line, and which celebrities turned "Frasier" down. "Early on, someone suggested getting guest voices," Casey recalled. "Kelsey agreed, as long as they weren't goofy calls.

If there's one subject people ask us about all time, it's our Chris's review of Attack Of The Clones. But if there's another, it's when an upgraded re-release of James Cameron's The Abyss is headed our way. We've good news — at least on the second front as 20th Century Studios has announced that a remastered 4K version of the movie exists!
There is a proviso, at least for now — the new remastered take on the film is currently set for US cinemas on 6 December.
In case you've somehow not seen the movie, it follows what happens when a nuclear sub mysteriously sinks and a private oil rig crew, led by foreman Bud Brigman (Ed Harris), is recruited to join a team of Navy SEALs on a search and rescue effort.

Fans of James Cameron’s underwater sci-fi adventure The Abyss (1989) have been waiting for a long time to see the film in high definition, let alone 4K. The last home video release of the film was on DVD in 2000, and since then, the film has been stuck in a limbo of rights issues and technical challenges. But now, the wait is finally over, as Cameron himself announced on Twitter that The Abyss: Special Edition, the director’s preferred cut of the film, will be remastered in 4K and presented in theaters on December 6, 20211
The Abyss: Special Edition is a 171-minute version of the film that Cameron worked on after Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991). It restores 28 minutes of footage that were cut from the theatrical release, including some scenes that drastically change the ending and the message of the film. Most of the moviegoing population is probably under the assumption that "Titanic" was director James Cameron's first seafaring movie, but they'd be wrong! That honor goes to "The Abyss," the 1989 sci-fi flick that went on to garner four Academy Award nominations and win the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.. The only drawback of "The Abyss," however, is that its availability has long been a matter of concern among film enthusiasts. Years ago, /Film covered the rumors that the movie would finally come to Blu-ray and 4K after only being available on DVD. Last we heard, this was still the plan ... but now we're hearing from the man, myth, and legend himself that fans will finally get the chance to watch the movie exactly the way Cameron intended it -- on the big screen and through the fabled Special Edition.
Cameron announced the news himself on Twitter to immediate celebrations on social media.

“The Abyss” stars Ed Harris as a deep sea oil worker whose ex-wife and the oil platformer’s designer (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) returns with a Swat team (led by Michael Biehn) after a nuclear submarine goes missing. Science fiction is a fascinating film genre. It inspires dreams of extraterrestrial life, futuristic gadgets, and space travel. Today, this all seems more plausible than ever. Yet, besides reflecting society, sci-fi helps us evaluate our actions -- and their consequences.
Creating scenes with nail-biting stunts requires a collaborative effort between actors and directors. Replacing stars with stunt performers due to their physical capabilities usually works but mishaps can still happen --- both on and off camera. The film industry has seen an increase in accidents over the last decade despite the advancement of technology. According to the Los Angeles Times, from 2010 to 2019, 19 fatal injuries occurred on American film sets. As attorney Chris Deacon told the outlet, "If those engaged to work on set in whatever capacity are dying at the hands of the creative process, then something is fundamentally wrong in the production processes."
Sure, authenticity makes for a thrilling watch.

James Cameron wasn’t as confident staring into “The Abyss” in 1989.
The Oscar winner explained during a Beyond Fest panel moderated by IndieWire’s Jim Hemphill that the underwater sci-fi action film was the “first really big, kind of mega-budget movie” in his career. Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio starred as divorced petroleum engineers who are hired to assist a Navy Seal (Michael Biehn) in recovering a nuclear submarine. The 20th Century Fox film had a budget of $43 million and grossed $90 at the worldwide box office before winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

Greenlaw has spent decades swordfishing in the icy Atlantic waters off the coast of Maine. But does she have what it takes to tackle crabbing in the Bering Sea? She’ll find out when she partners up with Wichrowski on the F/V Summer Bay in the new season of Deadliest Catch.
“I wanted to learn from the best — and I did,” Greenlaw told the Bangor Daily News when speaking of joining Deadliest Catch. “Wild Bill is not the most patient teacher, but his safety record and fishing ability are second to none. Movie magic relies on a swath of visual elements falling into place, including CGI, makeup, and sets, as well as the dangerous work that stunt performers handle. A well-run movie set does what it can to avoid unnecessary risks to actors and crew, but sometimes, a scene requires everyone to run on the razor's edge. At this point, the problem isn't just ameliorating the risk of an accident, but what could happen even if everything goes right. This is where stunt performers shine, and it's an insult that these crucial movie crew members still go without recognition at the top awards shows.
Sometimes, however, there's no way around it. The star must be in the picture, and it's up to them to decide whether they're up for taking a risk. Well, usually it's up to them. Not all sets are managed well, and there's a legacy of directors willing to...

The Color of Money is a movie of 1986 directed by Martin Scorsese. It is a continuation of The Hustler (1961), by Robert Rossen. Starring Paul Newman and Tom Cruise.
When Mr. Scorsese was not as acclaimed (yet), he did this movie which was a bit of a “filler”, which has become one of the reference movies about American pool.
Story line of The Color of Money The Color of Money (1986)
Eddie Felson, an old pool player, reappears as a whiskey merchant when he meets Vince, an outstanding pool player. Together they embark on a father-son type of voyage of discovery.
The Movie. Review

For every movie fan there are probably several films they can count as milestones, movies that became big parts of our viewing, even of our lives. Robin Hood Prince of Thieves was one of those for me. It came out at the perfect time, when I was 10. The screenplay had simple heroism, the villain was an obvious baddie you could boo and hiss at if the mood took you, there was plenty of action and even as a cut PG, it stretched the edges of its certification to a point that was an intense and sometimes scary experience for a relatively young kid. I loved it. Along with Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves became one of my first favourite movies. It was one of the reasons we first got a TV for the house, and a Vcr to go with it, and...

Long before Brian De Palma's "Scarface" became a pop cultural obsession for the hip-hop community, it was considered a commercial misfire and an artistic failure for its director. The modernized riff on Howard Hawks 1932 gangster classic was an epic of wretched excess. It was crass, bloated, and unremittingly gruesome. De Palma's most fervent critical defender, The New Yorker's Pauline Kael, titled her review "A De Palma Movie for People Who Don't Like De Palma Movies," and she had a point. The sprawling 170-minute film lacked the formal/thematic cohesion of his best work. It was more of a showcase for Al Pacino, who delved so deep into the role of Cuban gang lord Tony Montana that he never fully shed the character's verbal tics.
39 years later, "Scarface" is still a lot of movie. It's too much. Montana's downfall is uncomfortably distended. His arc is flat: he's a monster from...

The Perfect Storm star Diane Lane paid tribute today to its director Wolfgang Petersen, who died Friday at 81.
Wolfgang Petersen: A Career In Photos
“My heart is sad today,” she said in a statement to Deadline. “Wolfgang was a big, loving soul. A natural leader via positive encouragement; dare I say, he was a spiritual channel for us, grounding truly big stories to move us all through heights and depths. Literally, just being near him made me a better actor. My sincere condolences and love to his family.”
The Oscar-nominated actress was the female lead in The Perfect Storm, which starred George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and John C. Reilly as commercial fisherman from small-town Massachusetts who get caught in a freak North Atlantic weather event that never had happened in recorded history. The film detailed the men’s battle for survival as multiple storms collided and the desperate attempt to...

There have been plenty of difficult directors over the years, from Hitchcock pelting Tippi Hedren with live avians in "The Birds" to Kubrick and his hundreds of takes on "The Shining." Sam Peckinpah infuriated Charlton Heston so much that the actor brandished a saber at him, while William Friedkin fired real guns on the set of "The Exorcist" to keep his actors suitably on edge. Few modern filmmakers, however, have the tyrannical reputation of James Cameron, self-proclaimed King of the World.
A notorious egomaniac and fierce taskmaster, Cameron may just have the biggest balls in Hollywood. Who else would make a blockbuster about the Titanic so he could explore the actual wreck site? The stories of hardship on his movie sets are the stuff of cinema legend, from threatening, to firing crew members for taking bathroom breaks, to nailing their cellphones to the wall if they ring during a take.

James Cameron is a notoriously temperamental genius. Some call him a perfectionist. Others prefer tyrant. The older, wiser, chiller Cameron would agree with the latter assessment.
The days of the overly rigorous demands that turned the making of "The Abyss" into a battleground between the director and his overwhelmed actors -- e.g. when the camera ran out of film while shooting her emotionally supercharged resurrection, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio stormed off set shouting "We are not animals!" -- appear to be long gone. Cameron recently went on record regretting his "tin-pot dictator" ways, which is reassuring because, no matter how much I love "The...

It’s that magic hour right after dawn when Robin Hood and Maid Marian approach the water’s edge. With the sun still low enough to cast both figures in mythic silhouette, the couple is surrounded by a blanket of fog, looking as if they’ve just stepped off a storybook cover. For most of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves’ running time, the narrative and its music has built to this moment: A request, a kiss, and a declaration.
When Robin Hood asks the woman he loves to do him a favor—secret a message to her cousin—she doesn’t hesitate to say yes, but not for her King and not for her country. She simply says, “I’ll do it for you.” That is when composer Michael Kamen’s “Maid Marian” suite swells to operatic heights for the first time in the movie, losing itself in a swoon of its own orchestral making.

The fifth and final season of NBC’s “Blindspot” is moving up on the network’s schedule thanks to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Brian De Palma’s 1983 saga of hoodlum Tony Montana is an exceptional remake that’s become a classic almost by default — it’s too strikingly original to ignore. De Palma did the Latin male stereotype no favors, while bringing attention to the outrageous drug trafficking aided by law enforcement and criminal banks in a shameful decade of excess. Al Pacino added a page to his catalog of great performances, and the careers of Michelle Pfeiffer and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio were duly launched. De Palma gives this one ‘classical’ direction: he skips his former film school cinema games and homages to Hitch the Master.

I love The Abyss, and I couldn’t be happier to see that one day in the near future I’m going to get to watch it in 4K glory. I really hope that when they are finished they do a theatrical rerelease!
