Denzel Washington's First Movie Star Performance Came In A Film No One Saw
Image
Time flies when you're observing genius, and for some of us it feels like just yesterday that Denzel Washington was a preposterously talented young actor with a future of untold greatness laid out before him. What would he be? A charmer like Cary Grant, an everyman like James Stewart, or a stalwart like Sidney Poitier? It felt like he could be anything, everything, and, 43 years later, he's delivered on that promise with interest. Denzel Washington is everything: A gentleman, a playboy, a badass, a crusader, a villain, and a bit of a clown. Without fail, he takes your breath away by being the best possible version of whatever it is his character was written to be.

After a rough start with the wrongheaded 1981 racial satire "Carbon Copy," Washington found his footing in a supporting turn with "A Soldier's Story." In 1988, he received his first Academy Award nomination for his portrayal...

10 Greatest Denzel Washington Thriller Movies, Ranked
Image
Denzel Washington has been one of the most respected Hollywood actors since his earliest roles in films like Glory, Cry Freedom and The Mighty Quinn. Demonstrating an impressive range across genres, from war and drama to action and science fiction, few leading stars can command the screen as well as the Malcolm X star. Arguably his best genre after his dramatic roles is thrillers, where he has been cast as detectives, journalists and federal agents.

Denzel Washington has one of the strongest careers in modern Hollywood, being incredibly selective when it comes to scripts and collaborators. Playing the roles of characters from literature, history and original scripts, the actor is almost always at his best as a heroic cop. That said, he isn't beyond playing villains, and the thriller genre has brought out the best of his talents, ensuring his status as one of the film industry's most recognized and acclaimed stars.

The Denzel Washington Movie With 89% On Rt That Turned Him Into A "Movie Star," According To Roger Ebert
Image
Today, Denzel Washington is considered to be a certified movie star, yet some opinions may differ on when exactly the actor became so famous. Washington's career began in the 1980s, when he earned a recurring role in the medical drama, St. Elsewhere. Just a few years later, he started taking on movie roles in major projects like Glory, Malcolm X, and Training Day. Nowadays, Washington is also known for the Equalizer franchise and his upcoming historical epic, Gladiator II. However, not many people are able to pinpoint the moment when Washington became a household name.

Many different arguments could be made about when Washington became a true movie star. Some may say that Washington's first Academy Award-nominated role for 1987's Cry Freedom was the turning point for the actor. Others may cite his highest-grossing movie, American Gangster, as a particularly notable time in his career. His most memorable roles...

Denzel Washington Refused To Shoot These Pelican Brief Scenes With Julia Roberts
Image
Decades before Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones made headlines by not kissing at the end of "Twisters," another big screen non-kiss was the talk of Hollywood. In the 1993 film "The Pelican Brief," two stars who were skyrocketing to fame shared plenty of screen time and chemistry, but no climactic kiss.

Denzel Washington starred opposite Julia Roberts in the big screen adaptation of John Grisham's legal thriller novel. "The Pelican Brief" was the last film ever written and directed by "Klute" and "All the President's Men" filmmaker Alan J. Pakula, and it was a box office hit despite earning mixed reviews from critics. One point of contention? The lack of lip-locking closure between the two main characters, a decision that would be talked about extensively in the press –- especially once they caught wind of the reason an apparently planned kiss scene got axed.

In an interview with Newsweek from...

10 Actors Who Are Great At Playing Cops & Detectives
Image
A good cop movie needs a protagonist who is compelling and easy to support. Not all actors have the right style or appearance to play cops and detectives. Great actors have helped to create iconic movie detectives, including Jake Gittes and Sam Spade.

Some actors are better suited to playing cops and detectives than others, and they often appear in tons of movies playing similar characters. Dating all the way back to the film noir era, crime movies have revolved around detectives, with the biggest stars always being drawn to such roles. Actors need a certain style and authority to play law enforcement, and those who have it can add variations to keep their cop movies fresh.

Great detective movies must be about more than just a compelling mystery. The detective at the center of the case also needs to be an interesting character who the audience wants to spend time with,...

Sheryl Lee Ralph Recalls Getting Mistaken for Whitney Houston Twice on the Same Plane Ride
Image
Having been in the business for almost 50 years, gracing our television and cinema screens in shows like “Moesha” and “Abbott Elementary” and films “The Mighty Quinn” and “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit,” as well as the theatrical stage in the original production of “Dreamgirls,” Sheryl Lee Ralph should be considered a recognizable figure in the entertainment lexicon. And yet, in a recent piece for the Los Angeles Times, the Emmy-winning actress claims she’s repeatedly been mistaken for others.

“There was a point after ‘Dreamgirls’ [on Broadway] when I was getting on a plane, and someone was like, ‘Hi, Whitney.’ ‘I’m not Whitney Houston,’” she said she told the fellow passenger. “Time goes by, then the next person says, ‘Oh, Ms. Houston.’ ‘I am not Whitney Houston.’ Plane ride goes by, and the [flight attendant] comes with a bottle of wine and says, ‘I just want to say how much I adore you,...

Image
Quick Links Denzel Washington's Xavier Quinn Is a Cop for All Seasons The Mighty Quinn Is a Smart, Stylish Thriller Washington's Performance in The Mighty Quinn Is Oscar-Worthy Denzel Washington's charisma shines in The Mighty Quinn, proving his potential as a leading movie star. The film's exotic setting and clever plot keep audiences engaged, showcasing Washington's on-screen prowess. Despite being a box office disappointment, Washington's performance in The Mighty Quinn is Oscar-worthy and launched his film stardom.

While Denzel Washington proved himself to be a solid dramatic actor on the medical drama television series St. Elsewhere throughout its six-season run between 1982 and 1988, there were persistent doubts regarding whether Washington was capable of becoming a major movie star. These doubts continued with Washingtons Oscar-nominated performance as activist Steve Biko in the 1987 apartheid drama film Cry Freedom, in which Biko is treated as a supporting player in what is ostensibly supposed to be his story.

The Little Things Continued A Surprisingly Divisive 13-Movie Denzel Washington Trend That Dates Back 35 Years
Image
The Little Things features Denzel Washington in his 13th law enforcement role, showcasing his versatile talent in crime dramas over the years. Despite mixed reviews, The Little Things became a global hit on Netflix three years after its release, showcasing Washington's enduring appeal. Training Day and Inside Man stand out as Denzel Washington's best cop movies, with iconic performances and critical acclaim setting them apart.

The Little Things featured Denzel Washington in a familiar role despite its underwhelming critical reception. The Little Things, written and directed by John Lee Hancock, stars Washington alongside two fellow Oscar winners Jared Leto and Rami Malek in a tense crime drama set in Los Angeles. Washington plays Joe 'Deke' Deacon in The Little Things, a County Deputy Sheriff who becomes deeply ingrained in the search for a serial killer who is terrorizing Los Angeles.

Despite The Little Things divisive reception, it recently became...

15 Underrated Denzel Washington Performances
Image
Denzel Washington has an extensive body of underrated work that is equally good, if not better, than his more well-known roles. Whether in comedy, action-adventure, or romance, Washington has shown his versatility as an actor. Washington's underrated performances in films like "The Mighty Quinn," "The Great Debaters," and "He Got Game" should not be overlooked.

Denzel Washington's mainstream work is recognized and respected worldwide, but the prolific actor has an extensive body of underrated work under his belt that is equally good - and in some cases, even better than his more well-known roles. Also known for his theater work, Washington began his career in film over forty years ago and has earned much praise and awards along the way. With Washington's role in Gladiator 2 coming on the heels of other franchise work, it's safe to say the two-time Academy Award winner doesn't intend to slow down any time soon.

Every Denzel Washington Movie Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Denzel Washington's career spans nearly five decades and includes films, shows, voice work, narration, and theater, but he has largely preferred movies and has over 50 feature-length titles listed on his resume. Despite his impressive career and numerous accolades, not all of Washington's movies have aged well or received critical acclaim. Some notable disappointments include Heart Condition, Virtuosity, and Carbon Copy. While Washington has had his fair share of less successful films, he has also starred in cult classics and well-regarded movies, such as The Book of Eli, The Preacher's Wife, and The Mighty Quinn, which showcase his versatility as an actor.

A star of Denzel Washington's caliber needs no introduction; everyone has likely seen at least one of his movies–some, however, have definitely aged better than others. Having taken up acting at the age of 23, Washington had to suffer through a few cinematic disasters until better and richer roles came his way.

Denzel Washington Is The Best Actor Ever
Image
(Welcome to Best Actor Ever, an ongoing series where we explore the careers and performances of the greatest performers to ever grace the screen.)

If the young Denzel Washington had his way, the now 68-year-old Mount Vernon native would have a bust in Canton's Pro Football Hall of Fame. The man who would be Malcolm X, Rubin Carter, and Alonzo Harris initially had his sights trained on the gridiron before he enrolled at Fordham University in 1977, where he was a skilled enough athlete to play under Coach P.J. Carlesimo for the school's junior varsity team. "He would run us all day, and make us work," Washington told the New York Times in 1998. "But you know what? We were always prepared for the fourth quarter, and we hardly ever lost. Some of the things I learned from him, I still apply myself."

Washington knew by this point that a pro sports...

Music at Home: Dylan Uncovered

Bob Dylan’s music has always attracted an unusually high number of cover artists, both because he’s such a brilliantly original songwriter and because something about the way he performs his songs makes other people think they can do better. This has happened since the beginning of his career, when Peter, Paul, and Mary hit pay dirt by making “Blowin’ in the Wind” sound a little sweeter, and it’s still going on today: The first song on this playlist comes from a new Dylan covers album whose other...

Review: Nicholas Ray's “The Savage Innocents” (1960) Starring Anthony Quinn; Blu-ray Release From Olive Films
By Jeremy Carr

The beginning of Nicholas Ray’s The Savage Innocents—by no means the most typical or best film from this iconoclastic director—touts the ethnographic appeal of its Inuit focus. With debatable accuracy, the 1960 international coproduction illuminates, in somewhat superficial fashion, a “race of nomads” called “The Men.” The narrator says we call them Eskimos, individuals who live a life of ostensible simplicity “in the age of the atom bomb.” For a good portion of the movie, this is the basic premise, in terms of theme and (loose) narrative. It is a fictional, cursory study of a small and select segment of this Arctic population. On the outside looking in, there is a fundamental crudity in their behavior, their stilted English dialogue, their purity and naiveté, and the animalistic manners and utterances of main character Inuk (Anthony Quinn). But try as it might to make this all...

The Savage Innocents
The original Quinn the Eskimo (no kidding) is another life-loving rough portrait from Anthony Quinn, in Nicholas Ray’s rather successful final spin as a writer-director. Despite some technical awkwardness, Ray’s sensitivity to outsider souls finds full expression. Humans don’t get any more ‘outside’ than Inuk, a primitive unequipped to deal with the modern world.

Jody Rosen’s Songs of the Week: Bob Dylan, Green Velvet, Eli Young Band, Angel Haze
Bob Dylan 1985
Bob Dylan, “Pretty Saro”Reviewing Bob Dylan’s Self-Portrait in 1970, Greil Marcus unleashed the most famous lede in the history of rock criticism: “What is this shit?” I’ve been listening to The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 – Another Self Portrait (1969–1971), the new anthology that includes rarities, outtakes, live tracks, and a remastered version of the divisive original LP, and I’d amend Marcus somewhat: What isn’t this shit? Self-Portrait tosses a little of everything at the wall: traditional folk ballads, countrypolitan cornpone, “Blue Moon,” a Simon and Garfunkel cover, a Gordon Lightfoot cover, live recordings of “Like a Rolling Stone” and “The Mighty Quinn,” and more.Another Self-Portrait makes some sense of the zaniness with demos and early versions of several songs, and adds a whole slew of unreleased recordings, including some of the most graceful and moving Dylan performances you’ll hear. My favorite is “Pretty Saro,” a traditional...

Blade Runner screenwriter in talks to pen sequel for Ridley Scott
Thirty years after the release of Ridley Scott's sci-fi classic Blade Runner, the scribe behind the story is stepping back into its dystopian world.

Hampton Fancher is in talks to reunite with Scott to develop an original screenplay for a follow-up film, it was announced by Alcon co-founders and co-chief executive officers Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove.

The project - in the wake of Scott's return to the Alien universe with upcoming Prometheus - will be produced by Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free, and Bud Yorkin.

The filmmakers have revealed for the first time that the new movie will be a sequel taking place some years after the first film concluded.

Scott and Fancher had conceived of their 1982 classic as the first in a series of films incorporating the themes and characters featured in Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, from which Blade Runner was adapted.

Original Blade Runner Screenwriter to Reteam with Ridley Scott for Sequel
With the release of Ridley Scott's Prometheus now less than a month away, we've got an update on an upcoming project that will allow him to revisit another one of his seminal early works. Last summer we were all shocked when it was announced that Scott had signed on to direct a new Blade Runner movie, although at the time it was unclear if it would end up being a sequel, prequel or just a spin-off. This week it has been confirmed that the movie is indeed a sequel, and one of the original film's screenwriters will be returning to help him continue the story. Unfortunately, it looks like the earlier rumours of Harrison Ford starring in the film are probably not accurate. They've got a new protagonist in mind and her name is not Rick Deckard. According to a press release from Warner Brothers, screenwriter Hampton Fancher is...

Blade Runner sequel will reunite Ridley Scott with original screenplay writer
Director set to join forces again with writer Hampton Fancher as new film revealed to be sequel to 1982 classic with female lead

Ridley Scott's return to Blade Runner will be a sequel featuring a female protagonist, the veteran British director has confirmed. Alcon Entertainment, which owns the follow-up rights to the 1982 science fiction classic, announced in August that it had pulled off a coup by engaging the veteran British director to revisit one of his greatest triumphs, but it was unclear at the time what form the new film would take.

That uncertainty has now been dispelled, however, after Scott enlarged on an Alcon statement revealing that "the new story will take place some years after the first film concluded". "I started my first meetings on the Blade Runner sequel last week," the director told aceshowbiz.com. "We have a very good take on it. And we'll definitely be featuring a female protagonist.

Music (2010)
Ke$ha, Miley And Maroon 5 Cover Bob Dylan
Music (2010)
Nashville, Tenn. -- Anyone who ever doubted the transformative power of Bob Dylan's music need only look to Ke$ha.

Yes, Ke$ha.

The irreverent pop star known for singing about brushing her teeth with "a bottle of Jack" turns poignant while covering a song from one of music's great lyricists on the new four-disc "Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International." The project features 75 newly recorded Dylan songs by 80 artists, including Adele, Sting, Sugarland, Elvis Costello, hip-hop artist K'naan and others to support the human rights organization.

Ke$ha is one of the more unlikely stars to contribute to the compilation, released Tuesday. The pop star defined by party anthems like "Tik Tok" and "Your Love Is My Drug" took on Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright." As she found herself alone in her bedroom for the first time in months, the...

Exclusive: Jake Goldberger Directs Don Mckay
It's not often that a first time director is fortunate enough to be able to cast not one but three former Oscar Nominees, two Emmy winners and an honest to God screen legend in his or her debut film but for director Jake Goldberger ... that's exactly what happened. In his new independent film, Don McKay, which opened in theaters on April 2nd, Goldberger was able to bring together a stellar cast of accomplished actors that includes one time Oscar nominees Thomas Haden Church (Sideways) Elisabeth Shue (Leaving Las Vegas) and Melissa Leo (Frozen River), Emmy winners Keith David (They Live) and Pruitt Taylor Vince (Identity) and even a genuine acting legend in M. Emmet Walsh (Blood Simple, Fletch). In the film, Thomas Haden Church plays Don McKay, a man haunted by the demons of his past but yet journeys home to see his high school sweetheart, Sonny (Shue), who may...

Matthew Broderick in Glory (1989)
Denzel Washington movies: Name your fave five
Matthew Broderick in Glory (1989)
Denzel Washington -- nominated for five Oscars and six Golden Globes-is one of the best actors alive. As of today, he's also the man who unseated Avatar from the top spot at the box office. Not bad, sir! The Book of Eli raked in $11.7 million on Friday -- about a million and a half bucks more than James Cameron's 3-d-a-palooza. And if it holds up, it will mark yet another impressive opening weekend for an actor who's got a resume full of them. Of course, we here at EW are interested in bigger things than mere dollars and cents.

Date of Assessment: January 15, 2010

Positive Buzzwords: Versatile, intense, methodical, badass

Negative Buzzwords: Prickly, bit of an asshole, boom

The Case: Ideally, these assessments aim to make some brief arguments (both for and against the artist in question), which are followed up with a half-serious prognosis on where things are headed. Yet, how exactly does one go about suggesting improvements when it comes to Denzel Washington?

Denzel is about as good as it gets in today's Hollywood pool of relative talent. Not only do audiences love this guy, but critical acclaim has also followed Denzel since his early theater days. After 25 years in film, Denzel's won a handful of Oscars and Golden Globes and many more nominations; and even though he's also been in some rather lackluster movies, Denzel's been praised as a solid and consistent performer since the early 1980s. This...

Washington Called for Sex Scene Cuts?
Denzel Washington
Oscar winner Denzel Washington has denied reports he insisted a love scene be cut from his new film Man On Fire, because he was concerned about the interracial relationship. Despite reports Washington was worried about the reaction from his female black fans to his sex scenes with Phone Booth star Radha Mitchell, the actor's representative insists his client would not have asked for the cuts. However, Julia Roberts claimed Washington asked for their love scenes to be cut from 1993's Pelican Brief, and the star was also said to have asked for similar scenes with Mimi Rogers to be edited out from 1989's The Mighty Quinn after black women howled their disapproval during test screenings. A representative for Man On Fire makers Fox 2000 Pictures told The Scoop website, "I don't think there was any agenda. And if there was, I probably wouldn't tell you."...
