  • I read this story and I thougt (wow) this might be an independent, unkown thrilling movie.

The bad: unfortuntely this movie is burdened by a LACK of good acting performances. THAT is a problem, because there are only a few actors and the entire movie rests upon their shoulders.

No thrill. No suspense. Cheap sounding music score. The works. This is another TV movie, pimped up to be a feature movie. It is not.

Not any good? It aint terribly bad, but the below par acting is really annoying.
  • Very predictable drug delivery wrong person in the wrong place low budget you've seen them once, you've seen them all type film. A one time watch.....very forgettable.

She's researching desert flowers (dull) when a little mini-plane with drugs and a newbie drug transport (hispanic) crashes and holds her hostage. The sheriff sucks and doesn't do anything to save anybody.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Emily(Lucy Hale) is a botanist looking for an intrusive species in the American southwest and discovers a drug trafficking mule with a crashed lightweight plane. He takes her as they carry their goods looking for his connection.

No snakes or scorpions. Sun wasn't too much of an issue. You would think people working in this area would know to avoid strangers with downed planes.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity. On the boring side.
  • Elly and Tomas are great with their acting. U can feel their loneliness in the vast desert wilderness, with guillermo on the hunt like a wolf.

    Overall worth watching atleast once.

How is that a sherrif cant hit an open target in 5 shots right in front of him?!! Really sucks that the sheriffs department only has one man employed in Borrego...and he doesn't know how to button his shirt and he doesnt wear a vest...im confused. Decrepit mini airplane drops in the border zone: lets run and help! Might have violent drug runners on board, but hey lets drive very close to the site to be 100% sure. When you realize: there is a violent drug runner, just run to the car and do panic. Also the car has surely no gps an on it (why would you have that in a wide wild desert where nobody finds you when you have an accident). Half of the movie will be some absurd reason why violent, desperate drug runner doesn't just kill her just to shut up.
  • Lately I see movies "trying too hard", but sometimes simplicity is the best. There are only a handful of main actors, but there really is no need for more. The acting is great, and the cinematography is on point. As someone who is familiar with the desert setting in real life, I believe "Borrego" has managed to create this desert feeling for the viewer. "Borrego" is also a good thriller since you never really know what will happen next, and it leaves the viewer speculating the unfolding of the story throughout the film.

If you are a thriller/drama fan, I would recommend this title to you.

Since no one said it yet, I will gladly: This movie is awful. Don't waste your time like I did.

The idea is made like thousands times before, only this time is boring and VERY slow.

The characters are awful and very bad acted, the rhythm is slow AF, and I could write a story better than that in my shower thought.

Seriously you've been warned, SKIP IT.

Firstly, Hale and Gomez were amazing. I've added Gomez to my favorites based on the campfire scene. Hale, as usual, is excellent as well.

This movie was really well-written and executed until about halfway through. The latter half felt rushed and forced - too many (really) predictable things happening in such a short span of time.

The exchange between Alex and Jose in the ravine was poorly delivered. It sounded like...a rote parody almost in their tone and rhythm of talking to one another.

I really liked the messaging throughout. I just wish it could've finished as well as it started.

    Worth a watch though!

It starts relatively weak and it takes a while until it gets more exciting. In the beginning everything is very superficial (also a bit boring), only much later does a personal touch come into the main character. Speaking of the main character, Lucy Hale performed well. The role is very different from her previous ones. Maybe we'll see her more often in such more emotional, more demanding roles in the future. It definitely suits her. At the end it gets more exciting, although it's not that exciting - but it gets better. Overall, however, there is a lack of sophisticated plots, you learn very little about the characters and a lot remains in the dark.
  • Great little story. Lucy Hale is a beauty to watch.

I do not understand the bad reviews. It's worth a watch definitely.

Out in the desert alone not the best idea.
  • No pun intended - and of course this is not even close to the Lord of the Rings ... they do smoke way more in that one that is. All kidding aside - the movie at hand here deals with a very serious problem (no pun intended). Which leaves our main character quite stranded ... would that count as another pun? I guess so.

Anyway, you may have seen something like this before and this may have quite the slow pace ... but if you suspend your disbelief you will be able to be entertained. The actors really do a good job here ... and you will undertstand their motivation and their bond ... which may make certain things towards the end more hurtful I reckon .. or less depending on how much you have bonded or not.

Not an easy movie, but one with a clear message ...
  • Starts Off Bad, But Wait, it Gets Worse... This movie is insanely terrible. That was an hour and forty minutes of visual torture. I can't believe I actually put myself through that.

No words can describe what a piece of poo this is. The unbelievable content aside, the production/post production quality is beyond horrendous. Story - abominable. Acting - laughable. Concept - WHAT THE F....???

This was absolute garbage from the overdone plot to the terrible acting to the bad directing. The last half of the movie i thought to myself, is this a comedy?.

Seriously, don't waste your time like i did. Absolute garbage.

Botanist Elly (Lucy Hale) is doing a plant survey in the desert. She befriends delinquent teen Alex Gomez (Olivia Trujillo). One night alone in the desert, she spots a plane crashing nearby. It's a drug plane and pilot Tomas (Leynar Gomez) takes Elly captive. She is forced to transport the drugs. Deputy Jose Gomez (Nicholas Gonzalez) is Alex's father. He is pushed to find the missing Elly. Guillermo (Jorge A. Jimenez) is the drug dealer looking for his missing drugs.

This is a fine mid-level thriller. It could be better. It gets too convenient sometimes. Every one of these people are impossibly good at tracking. The first one is Guillermo. I don't know how he finds the crash site some 50 miles away unless there is a tracking device. If the plane has a tracking device, I don't know why Tomas wouldn't keep it with him. I get following tire tracks. Following foot prints is probably harder especially when they take a sharp turn like that. The writing has to be more careful than this. Characters cannot just magically track people like this. Otherwise, I like this simple premise and the high stakes drama.
  • I fell asleep twice while watching this movie, slow & not engaging or thrilling. Slow drama lovers might enjoy it, not my type! I wanted to watch it thinking it would be a good survival movie but I was wrong.
  • Neither great nor groundbreaking, yet a good way to pass some time. Good acting, particularly Tomas, the pilot, and I liked how there were some backstories for some of the characters, and some bonding between people who had far different backgrounds. Ignore the 1 star and the 10 star ratings, those have to be plants, and check it out.
  • If I were a middle schooler, I'd probably be okay being forced to watch this during my health class or something. As an actual movie you might want to watch for entertainment? It's a nope.

I mainly watched it because I live in the San Diego area and I like the Anza Borrego desert. I'll say the film did make me want to drive out there and go for a hike. I haven't been in awhile, and the cinematography was decent.

Everything else mostly stunk. It wasn't tense at all, the acting wasn't very good, the characters were poorly developed so you didn't really care about any of them, the plot was dumb, and the story was wrapped around the opening and closing "tragic facts" about fentanyl and other drugs. It was like someone said, "Hey, what if we take an infographic that warns about the drug problem in America, and try to write a screenplay from it?"

I'm not saying the message about drugs isn't important -- just that this film was a lousy (boring, poorly constructed and acted) vehicle for getting that message across.

And, they had to throw in two additional ridiculous messages: 1) Most people in the drug trade are really just decent folks who came into hard times and are trying to provide for their families and 2) No one in the San Diego area cares about Mexican-Americans.

Give me a break. Neither of these things is an accurate reflection of reality. I could rant a bit here, but I'll skip it because I AM a liberal and I don't want to appear like I'm one of those folks who wears a red cap. I'm just fed up with the messages, that are neither accurate nor helpful, that seem to be seeping into way too many films these days. There's a way to put and keep important messages in front of viewers without distorting the truth, and without resorting to cheap caricature-like portrayals.

Anyway, okay I guess I did rant a bit, but that's the end of it. Back to the movie itself: I'd say you could happily skip it and not miss out on a thing...
  • A botanist meets a teacher turned narco smuggler in the desert. Pretty interesting premise. Lucy Hale portrays the botanist. Pretty surprised this didnt turn into romantic comedy. It has it's moments, but it's very slim. To the point. I enjoyed it.
  • Warning: Spoilers
This film start with a woman "Elly" recognizing a plant, and she drive away her car scene! As turnout, this film is about a botanist "Elly" been forced to deliver the drug for a pilot "Tomas" to his client "Guillermo", after she witness Tomas' plane crash, and try to help him! Entire film full of boring conversation, and annoying overuse scene! Such as, overuse of the walking scene, overuse of the searching scene, overuse of the arguing scene, overuse of the calling names scene, overuse of the burning scene, overuse of the talking to the radio scene, overuse of the drinking scene, overuse of the staring scene, overuse of the driving scene, overuse of the tying up scene, overuse of the running scene, overuse of the holding gun scene, overuse of the riding motorcycle scene, overuse of the holding torch light scene, and overuse of the talking on the phone scene! Make the film unwatchable! At the end, Elly been saved, after Guillermo been burn to death! That's it! Another disappointed film!

I thought the action started out slow but did build as the movie went on. It was well made and the scenery was desolate but appealing as deserts go. I made you want to find out what was going to happen next. I was thoroughly entertained.

They did an excellent job making a 90s flick that you'd watch on a lazy Saturday morning.

It has the typical ingredients of the genre: hot scientist fleeing her demons in desert solitude, the tough tomboy teenager saving the day, the ruthless cartel operative, the unlucky mule, the selfless sheriff. All of this shot in the beautiful... Spanish desert (!). Then again the landscapes looked more like Death Valley than Anza Borrego or Salton Sea. Still a good job by the photography and location departments.

What an incredibly boring movie. Was awful. Slow. Absolutely painful. Don't waste your time. And sooo low-budget!!! Not sure WHY we didn't turn it off. Lol. Guess we are gluttons for punishment. Sounded like it would be so good in the description. But failed to deliver.
  • The story plot is boring and lame, there are so many drug related movies out there, its getting really annoying and repetitive. The cinematography was terrible, the acting was not good, but that is perhaps because the story made no sense, it has no direction and many scene's seemed foolish. White people always writing stories about Mexicans in a negative way, don't y'all get tired?
  • It is too smooth, too cheesy and predictable for me, and with those introducing didactic lines about drugs, what's the f...to speak about this? If it was about immgrants, as in DESIERTO for instance, I could understand that the producers want to recall the audiences about the number of immigrants who try to cross the border, but why, in this movie, this information about drugs? Why not speaking about the work of botanists? Because the lead character of this movie is a botanist...ha ha ha It's not a bad movie but so forgettable, lost among batches of others. Yes, concerning desert survival movies involving the USA border, I highly prefer DESIERTO.
