Michael Crichton was quite the prolific writer before his death nearly a decade ago in 2008. His influence on Hollywood looms large, authoring the novels Jurassic Park and The Lost World, upon which the Steven Spielberg built a franchise, in addition to writing and directing the original 1973 film Westworld, which laid the groundwork for the hit HBO show of the same name. The man has a reputation for putting humans in perilous situations with non-human entities, and his final novel Mirco is no different.
Mirco is another thriller, focusing on a team of graduate students who are lured to Hawaii to work for a mysterious biotech company. That is, until they are miniaturized and released into the rain forest with nothing but their scientific know-how and wits to survive. Hmmm... humans go to a tropical locale and have to face giant monsters? And it is all intended to build a new franchise?...

Brooke Shields hopes that George and Amal Clooney keep their children away from the public eye for a while.
"They've got enough of being self-absorbed with selfies," Shields tells Et's Jennifer Peros of today's kids. "I mean, it's enough already. You sort of don't want to add Hollywood to it."

1. “Trollhunters” Season 1 (available December 23)
Why Should I Watch It? Two big reasons: First, the director of “Pan’s Labyrinth,” Guillermo del Toro, created “Trollhunters,” an animated event series about a teenager who discovers a mystical amulet that unveils a secret civilization of trolls beneath his hometown. If the Oscar nominee himself isn’t enough, there’s another creative force — in addition to the impressive voice cast of Kelsey Grammer, Ron Perlman and Charlie Saxton — to pay attention to: Said teenager is voiced by Anton Yelchin, in what’s being billed his final role. After debuting two episodes at New York Comic-Con in October, del Toro said he never even discussed replacing Yelchin. “We didn’t go into a meeting,” del Toro said. “We didn’t have a conference. […] He was a great guy to work with, he was proud of what he did, we were proud of what he did.

I will be speaking about The History of St. Louis Drive-In Movie Theaters on Thursday June 2nd at 10:30am at Lee Auditorium inside the Missouri History Museum (Lindell and DeBaliviere in Forest Park, St. Louis, Missouri)
The I-44 Drive-in Movie theater was a regular hangout for me in the late 1970’s. A perfect day was to spend the daylight hours at Six Flags in Eureka, then head East on 1-44, get off at Highway 141 and spend the evening watching a double feature at that Drive-In. The I-44 had the worst location for a drive-in. It sat in the valley wedged between a landfill, railroad tracks, and the Meramec river. The fog would settle in the Valley and block out the projector’s beam, the train noise would often drown out the sound, and the mosquitos loved the river, the landfill, and the taste of those attending the drive-in. But I still loved it there.

An aging assassin who tries to retire and finds himself pursued by a younger, stealthier clone of himself. "Looper" much? But long before Rian Johnson put his dazzling and inventive movie on the big screen, Touchstone Pictures picked up the rights to a movie called "Gemini Man" way back in 1997. Originally pitched by "Lost" writer Darren Lemke and later re-written by a group that included Johnathan Hensleigh ("The Punisher"), the movie got another draft from writer David Benioff ("The 25th Hour," "Troy") a few years ago, and was poised to be a vehicle for Curtis Hanson with Jerry Bruckheimer producing. And while that didn't happen, somewhere along the way Joe Carnahan came knocking. Following his very well received sizzle/pitch reels for "Daredevil" that he shared in August, Carnahan has dropped another look at his proposal for "Gemini Man." While longer than the "Daredevil" spot,...

So, now we know that Paramount are comprehensively rebooting the Jack Ryan character and creating something akin to a cross-over franchise, where Chris Pine plays a younger, pre-cia Ryan and Kevin Costner plays a mentor figure (William Harper) who may then crop up in Without Remorse as a similar mentor for Clancy’s character John Kelly, if rumours of Christopher McQuarrie taking on that project prove to be true.
Lost yet? We’ll see how this pans out. What we do know for sure is that Jack Ryan, with Chris Pine as Ryan and Kevin Costner as Harper is now shooting under Kenneth Branagh’s supervision. Ryan will be a financial analyst at this stage, yet to be lured into the CIA and Branagh is taking on villain duties as well, as Ryan’s boss who is planning to do something fairly mean with the Us economy. Late last year we learned that Walden Media and Jennifer Lopez were teaming up to produce a live-action film based on the computer game Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? While the report said that the project would be something in between National Treasure and The Thomas Crowne Affair, a writer had yet to be hired to handle the script. Now, however, the project has found it's man with the pen and is getting ready to move forward. According to THR, Darren Lemke has been given the duty of writing a version of Carmen Sandiego suitable for the big screen. The writer made his feature debut in 2004, writing and directing a small independent movie called Lost with Dean Cain and Danny Trejo, but he has since found himself working within the studio system. In 2010 he scripted Shrek Forever After, the third and final sequel in the franchise, and he...

The world as a whole is still trying to forget the unbelievably insane The Nutcracker in 3D, released last year. (And just out on DVD as The Nutcracker: The Untold Story.) The easiest way to forget that the film exists is to make another movie called The Nutcracker, and have this one be a truly family-friendly version. And so we've got this: Adam Shankman (Hairspray, Rock of Ages) will make The Nutcracker for New Line, with this version being "a new take on the classic fairy tale that is being eyed as a tent pole family holiday film for late 2013." Deadline [1] reports that the script is by Darren Lemke (Lost, Jack the Giant Killer, Shrek Forever After) and that his script uses the 1815 story by E.T.A Hoffman, The Nutcracker and the Rat King, as the primary source. That was the inspiration for the libretto for the famous Tchaikovsky ballet,...

Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada, Easy A) and Bill Nighy (Deathly Hallows Part 1, Love Actually) have joined the cast of director Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Killer. The 3D fantasy/adventure project has been billed as an "adult look at the Jack and the Beanstalk legend." The plot summary is as follows: "When a princess is kidnapped, a long-standing peace between men and giants becomes threatened, and a young farmer is given an opportunity to lead a dangerous expedition to the giant kingdom to rescue her." According to TheWrap [1], Tucci will play Roderick, the villain of the story and an adviser to the king who has plans of taking over Cloister and Nighy will play one half of Fallon, the two headed leader of the giants. Fallon's other half will be played by John Kassir. Previously: Singer has still not picked an actor to play the title role of Jack.

Plus! The mega list of lists – Aka all the other stuff we didn't have room for
2010's best guest appearances
Bon Iver on Kanye's Lost In The World
It might be quicker to compile a list of people who didn't feature on Kanye's epic My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (Mike Oldfield, Rick Ross, Gil Scott-Heron, Aphex Twin etc) but Justin Vernon's cameo is a bit special.
Gillian Anderson as Wallis Simpson in Any Human Heart
Logan Mountstuart (Matthew Macfayden) crossed paths with Gillian Anderson's Wallis Simpson (brilliantly partnered by Tom Hollander as the paranoid Duke Of Windsor). An exile on a royal streak, she floated from Portugal to the Bahamas like a swan carved in ice, until Logan was crossed off their party list with a hissed "Judas!" straight to camera.

New Line has given director Bryan Singer the green light for the remake of “Jake the Giant Killer.” The story is a dark retelling of the English fairy tale, “Jack and the Beanstalk.” The script is written by Darren Lemke and Mark Bomback, who have previously worked on “Lost,” and “Die Hard 4.” More specifically, it will be a remake of the 1962 version of “Jake the Giant Killer,” starring Kerwin Mathews and Judi Meredith. The story is about a farm boy that becomes a knight to fend off an evil wizard and protect a princess. The next step is for someone to play Jack. According to Deadline, Singer is considering Aaron Johnson, who played Dave Lizewski in “Kick-Ass.” However, other young actors are in consideration as well. Gig Patta’s Take: There are several versions of Jack and the Beanstalk, so I am waiting to see how this story may turn out.

Let's get one thing straight: machetes are awesome. So awesome, in fact, that the oversized jungle-cutting blade is getting the spotlight in its very own Danny Trejo-starring movie, "Machete," out in theaters nationwide today.
But "Machete" isn't the first time that machetes have had a prominent role in the world of film — far from it, in fact. After the jump, check out a list of some of our favorite machetes in modern cinema!
Billy
In the original "Predator," Arnold Schwarzenegger's entire special forces team gets wiped out by the titular man-hunting alien, but many of them get one final hurrah — like Billy, the Native American soldier who wields a machete with ruthless efficiency. We never get to see what happens as Billy stands on the log bridge, machete in hand, waiting for the Predator. But the action scene that unfolds in our mind's eye is pretty badass nonetheless!

While Tsr has so far presented many episodes of “He Said – She Said …” not many are as polarizing as this discussion about the new Adrien Brody movie, Predators. On one side, we have the She, Morrow McLaughlin, who “Loved, loved, loved it!” On the complete opposite side of that statement stands myself, a lone and unamused desperado representing the “He” side.
Plot: Soldiers, including Royce (Brody), fall from the sky and land in a jungle. They soon learn they’re being hunted by an alien race.

Predators
Directed by: Nimród Antal
Cast: Adrien Brody, Alice Braga, Topher Grace, Laurence Fishburne
Running Time: 1 hr 47 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: July 9, 2010
Plot: Soldiers, including Royce (Brody), fall from the sky and land in a jungle. They soon learn they’re being hunted by an alien race.
Who’S It For? Fans of the original 1987 Predator film, and fans of the sci-fi, action genre will be very pleased. Ladies, realize that’s what you are getting if your boyfriend tries to drag you to a movie starring Adrien Brody and Topher Grace.
Expectations: I avoided all previews and trailers, including a sneak-peak that was all the rage at SXSW. I thought it was hilarious that some geeks were upset about Brody and Grace getting cast, without seeing one second of footage.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Adrien Brody as Royce: Those who thought Brody couldn’t be tough enough … get over it.

Predators featured an exemplary who’s who of walking clichés under Dutch’s command which lent itself to the film’s charm and magnetism. Likewise, Predators features a similar though less memorable collection of fleshy fodder for the intergalactic hunters to track down and pick off. There’s Robert Rodriquez favorite Danny Trejo playing a mirror image of himself; Adrien Brody as surly tough guy loner who channels Christian Bale’s Batman voice and his beefed up body; Walter Goggins as a motor mouth serial killer coward; Lawrence Fishburne as the guy with a trippy sanity; Oleg Taktarov as the mild-mannered big gun; Louis Changchien as the silent assassin; Alice Braga as the Latino macho warrior; Mahershalalhashbaz Ali as the clueless guy most likely to die quickly; and Topher Grace as the sniveling dweeb with questionable loyalties…read more [TheHDRoom]

Director: Nimród Antal Writers: Michael Finch, Alex Litvak, Jim Thomas (characters), John Thomas (characters) Starring: Adrien Brody, Laurence Fishburne, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Danny Trejo, Walton Goggins, Oleg Taktarov, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Louis Ozawa Changchien In 1987, Predator introduced an invisibility-cloaked extra-terrestrial warrior who wreaked havoc in a Central American jungle. Looking to reboot the Predator franchise in 1994, Twentieth Century Fox enlisted Robert Rodriguez (fresh off his directorial debut El Mariachi) to pen a new Predator script. Fifteen years later, Rodriguez received a phone call from Fox saying they just found his script and wanted to make his movie. Predators is that movie (though with a revised script and Rodriguez deferred the directing duties to Nimród Antal). In the jarring and disorienting opening, we are dropped – quite literally – into the jungle alongside Royce (Adrien Brody), a heavily-armed lone soldier sporting a very large gun. Royce promptly gathers a merry albeit untrustworthy band of outsiders (which,...

The first images from AMC's new zombie apocalypse television series, The Walking Dead (based on the comic series of the same name by Robert Kirkman), are starting to pour in. As a huge fan of the comics myself, these photos are starting to give me confidence that the source material is in good hands, but I'm not sure it makes me any more excited for Andrew Lincoln. See, I had mixed feelings when I first heard that Lincoln had been cast as Rick Grimes: disappointment that the producers hadn't gone for Aaron Eckhart (the obvious choice for me), but relief that Darabont hadn't cast Thomas Jane, his Mist golden-boy. For me, Jane has a flavor of camp even when he is playing it straight. While I am totally down for a campy zombie show (it sounds like a Zombieland series may also be on its way), I think that The Walking Dead...

In a strange twist of post-modern irony, the movie idea that started life as a fake trailer is now promoting itself with a real trailer. AICN got a special delivery from Roderiguez himself of this "illegal" trailer for Machete staring Danny Trejo as the titular character out for revenge.
The trailer retains that great grindhouse vibe, but feels more like a straight to VHS action flick from the 90s than a 70s exploitation film. Why do I feel like the movie will tank at the box office?
Synopsis:
After being betrayed by the organization who hired him, an ex-Federale launches a brutal rampage of revenge against his former boss.
Watch for cameos by Robert Deniro, Steven Segal, Michelle Roderiguez and that guy who plays Frank on Lost.
Machete hits theaters Labor Day Weekend, September 3rd this fall.
trailer after the break.

Academy Award-winning screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) will reteam with director Bryan Singer on a rewrite of Jack the Giant Killer. The 3D fantasy/adventure project has been billed as an "adult look at the Jack and the Beanstalk legend." The original script was written by Lost (the indie film, not the TV show) scribe Darren Lemke, with a re-write by Live Free or Die Hard/Race to Witch Mountain writer Mark Bomback. DJ Caruso was originally attached to direct. McQuarrie shot to fame with his screenplay for The Usual Suspects. He has since reteamed with Bryan Singer on X-Men, Apt Pupil and Valkyrie, and made his directorial debut in 2000 with The Way of the Gun. This project prevented Singer from directing X-Men: First Class. 20th Century Fox loves the Jamie Moss script, written from Singer's treatment, and is pushing the film into production now without him at the helm.

Awhile ago I did a piece on 5 Vampire Movies Everyone should see and since the Vampire myth is one of my favorite genres of film it only made sense to expand upon that article. So with that I bring you 10 of the Best Vampire Movies everyone should see. They are served in no particular order.
Near Dark: I start my list off with Near Dark a classic vampire movie and a favorite of its generation. It was also directed by Hurt Locker Director Kathryn Bigelow which should give you some strong hints on why it was so popular with genre fans. Twilight gets alot of flack about being more about teen angst then a true vampire tale but Near Dark was no different.

According to HeatVision Blog, Bryan Singer (Superman Returns, Valkyrie) has signed on to direct “Jack the Giant Killer,” the fantasy adventure from Legendary Pictures and New Line.
Penned by Mark Bomback (Deception, Live Free or Die Hard) and Darren Lemke (Lost (2004)) while Neal Moritz is producing via his Original Film banner. David Dobkin will co-produce alongside Legendary’s Jon Jashni and Alex Garcia.
“Jack the Giant Killer” is set in motion when a princess is kidnapped, threatening a long-standing peace between men and giants. A young farmer is given an opportunity to lead a dangerous expedition to the giants’ kingdom in hopes of rescuing her.
Apparently the film is being fast-tracked so it will mostly likely be Singer’s next movie. “Battlestar Gallactica” and remake of “Excalibur” (1981) will have to wait.

I’ve always been a huge fan of director D.J. Caruso, despite his recent misfire with Eagle Eye (you can hear an interview I did with him by clicking here). The man has loads of talent and has worked extensively and admirably in both the TV and film industries. His skill has won him a fruitful partnership with Steven Spielberg. More importantly, a lot of his work centers around properties with sci-fi concepts, and we can always used more skilled people taking on that genre.
According to Variety, Caruso is now set to direct Jack the Giant Killer, and “adult look at the Jack and the Beanstalk legend.” The script was written by Lost (the indie film, not the TV show) scribe Darren Lemke, with a re-write by Mark Bomback. While dark and gloomy flicks are nothing new, ever since The Dark Knight destroyed box-office records, Studios have been prepping a lot more “darker” themed projects. The latest, Jack the Giant Killer, comes from New Line and will be directed by D.J. Caruso (Eagle Eye, Disturbia). The flick is a drama that takes an adult look at the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale. When a princess is kidnapped, a long-standing peace between men and giants becomes threatened, and a young farmer is given an opportunity to lead a dangerous expedition to the giant kingdom to rescue her. Darren Lemke, writer/director of the indie thriller Lost starring Dean Cain, penned the script. Mark Bomback (Live Free or Die Hard, Deception, Godsend) did a rewrite. The production is expected to be bigger in scale and budget than Caruso’s previous films. Neal Moritz (I Am Legend) and David Dobkin (Fred Claus) will produce.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. ushered in the new on the comedy side and stuck with the old in the drama field, bestowing top TV honors to ABC's blockbuster drama hit Grey's Anatomy and hot freshman comedy Ugly Betty.
Betty star America Ferrera and Alec Baldwin -- star of another rookie comedy, NBC's 30 Rock -- won the top comedy acting prizes, while the leads of established hits, Hugh Laurie of Fox's House and Kyra Sedgwick of TNT's The Closer, were named top actors in the drama races.
ABC's leading three trophies were matched by HBO, whose Emmy-winning period drama Elizabeth I was the most-heralded TV program with three Golden Globes -- for best miniseries or TV movie, star Helen Mirren and supporting actor Jeremy Irons.
This is the second consecutive year that ABC and Touchstone TV swept the top series categories at the Globes, having accomplished the feat last year with drama Lost and dramedy Desperate Housewives.
"Every single intern at Seattle Grace Hospital would say, 'Seriously?' " said an exuberant Shonda Rhimes, creator and executive producer of Grey's.
This is the first major series win for the steamy medical drama, which was upset at the Emmys in August.
Said Betty creator/executive producer Silvio Horta, "Like a lot of its characters and a lot of us up here right now, this show is an immigrant, and Betty is a testament to the American dream." Horta was surrounded onstage by the show's cast and producing team, including Mexican-born Salma Hayek, an executive producer and co-star. "And the American dream is, in fact, alive and well and within reach of anyone in the world who wants it."
Minutes later, the show's star, Ferrera, the only first-time nominee in the best actress in a comedy series category, began weeping when she heard her name.
"Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press for recognizing the show and this character who is truly bringing a new face to television and such a beautiful, beautiful message about beauty that lies deeper than what we see," she said through tears. "It is such an honor to play a role that I hear from young girls on a daily basis how it makes them feel worthy and lovable and that they have more to offer the world than they thought."
After his name was announced as the winner in the best actor in a comedy series category, Baldwin hopped backstage and then made a grand appearance onstage from the wings.
