The Best Cast Films of 2017, According to Top Casting Directors
Marion Dougherty in Casting By (2012)
Casting directors remain the only job in the opening titles that doesn’t have its own Oscar category, but there’s reason to believe that will change. Already recognized by the Emmys, casting directors have made tremendous strides since they unionized in 2005 and negotiated their first contract with studios. In 2013, the guild earned its own Academy branch and received three seats at the Academy’s Board of Governors’ table. Last year, Lynn Stalmaster (“The Graduate,” “West Side Story”) received an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards, becoming the first-ever casting director to receive an Academy Award.

So: Let’s imagine for a moment casting directors had their own Oscar category in 2017: What are the best-cast films of the year?

IndieWire asked 15 of the top casting directors to nominate films worthy of casting recognition this year. We often think of the best films in terms of their expressive cinematography, enveloping production design,...

Josh and Anna Duggar: How They Overcame Scandal and Infidelity — and Are ‘Rebuilding a Life Together’
Shah Rukh Khan and Sharad S. Kapoor in Josh (2000)
Josh and Anna Duggar have been through trials and tribulations throughout their eight-year marriage, but the couple remained committed to rebuilding their life together.

On Friday, the couple announced in a Duggar family blog post that they are expecting their fifth child — a baby boy due later this year.

Although the former reality stars, who rose to fame on TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting, admit that the past two years — which included scandal and infidelity — haven’t been easy for them to get through, they believe that “beauty comes from ashes” and say they are looking forward to what’s in store.

Wood Harris, David Call, Tristan Mack Wilds, Antoine Harris, and Afton Williamson in The Breaks (2016)
Exclusive: ‘The Breaks’ Cast Brings ’90s-Era Hip-Hop to Life on VH1
Wood Harris, David Call, Tristan Mack Wilds, Antoine Harris, and Afton Williamson in The Breaks (2016)
Many of the actors on VH1’s new scripted series The Breaks (premiering Monday, Feb. 20) were just kids during the early ’90s era of hip-hop captured in loving detail on the show. Yet, they’re still able to channel the spirit of that moment in the culture’s history because of how far they’ve gone to prepare for their roles.

For Mack Wilds, who also stars on Fox’s racially charged drama Shots Fired, premiering March 22, that meant actually learning how to spin records in order to add to hip-hop producer DeeVee’s skill set. When DeeVee takes part in a DJ battle at NYC’s New Music Seminar on the show, Wilds was prepared to go through the motions.

“I’m the type of guy who, if you put me up against anything that I don’t understand, I’m gonna go try to find out,” says the actor, who also has...

Dangal (2016)
‘Dangal’ Review: Aamir Khan’s Bollywood Wrestling Drama Is a Christmas Treat — Until It Isn’t
Dangal (2016)
“Dangal” is Disney India’s big Christmas bet, and the Aamir Khan wrestling drama starts strong. The characters are sketched with the kind of patience that can only come from a place of confidence. There are enough crowd-pleasing moments to fill an entire summer blockbuster. The soundtrack is brash and exhilarating; the songs here will dominate many workout playlists in the new year. The social commentary is not subtle, but it is forthright and consistent.

What a shame about that second half. It is rare that a film manages to undo so much of its groundwork so thoroughly in so short a span of time. The creative decisions made here amount to self-sabotage.

‘Black Mirror’: Now You, Too, Can Take a ‘Nosedive’ by Rating Everyone You Know
Black Mirror (2011)
If you’ve already binge-watched the latest season of “Black Mirror,” then you’re already familiar with the Uber-like premise of “Nosedive”: Everybody rates everyone they interact with on a scale from one to five, and anything under four stars is seen as a failure. (This is also how an alarming number of critics grade things, but I digress.) A new tie-in website allows you to do just that, because social media hasn’t already made our interpersonal relationships strained enough.

It will be replaced by encore episodes of Masterchef Junior. The show's online live feeds will also shut down later today, though it's highly unlikely they will show the cast being informed of the show's cancellation.

Bunheads Review: Two Tickets to Paradise
Despite it being January, the bunheads returned to school after summer break in "Channing Tatum Is a Fine Actor," a line that was uttered by none other than Carl. I didn't see that one coming! Michelle is happily ensconced in Paradise again and things are back to normal.

Did I say normal? If there's one thing you can count on, things are never normal in Paradise. How abnormal things got is just a matter of scale.

After spending the summer at camp, Carl returned prepared to reignite the romantic fire with Boo. She was equally as excited, until she remembered they had promised to meet each others' parents. Apparently that's just not her thing. Instead of having faith in how much Carl likes her (he carved her an archery set at camp for goodness sakes!), she went to Michelle for advice. Oops!

Michelle's advice was to be exactly what his parents expected.

An absorbing portrait of Patrick Leigh Fermor found the man behind the myth, while Edna O'Brien's perfect memoir cherished her many lives and loves

The outstanding achievement in literary biography this year was Artemis Cooper's Patrick Leigh Fermor (Murray £25). Like Dickens (whose life as told by Claire Tomalin was a highlight of 2011), Paddy Leigh Fermor lived life to the limit. Before he was 30, he had not only walked from London to Constantinople, but had fallen in love with a Romanian princess and, famously, abducted a German general in the battle for Crete. Leigh Fermor is a colourful and romantic proposition, but how do you write about a man who has already been mythologised in bestsellers such as Ill Met By Moonlight? Cooper's answer is to find the man behind the myth in a sharp, absorbing portrait of the scholar-gypsy. I was particularly grateful for the news that, until well into old age,...

Blu-ray Review: Mediocre Release for Academy Award-Winning ‘The Artist’
Chicago – Wouldn’t you think that the release of the last Best Picture winner from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences would be an event? I know we’ve reached a point where public opinion and the Oscars are arguably further apart than ever before but wouldn’t think that Sony would treat their most-respected film critically with “Special Edition” degrees of Blu-ray features. The release of “The Artist” last week is a decent one but not what one would expect given the pedigree of the film.

Rating: 3.5/5.0

While I don’t think it should have won Best Picture, I stand by the belief that “The Artist” wasn’t a bad choice (certainly better than last year’s “The King’s Speech” or many other recent befuddling decisions made by the Academy). While the silent film aspect of the film is still clearly scaring off many people, I...

Bill Murray Offers Bummer ‘Ghostbusters 3’ Update
Brad Pitt in World War Z (2013)
We hoped when Bill Murray appeared on "The Late Show with David Letterman" earlier in the week that he might have something important to say about "Ghostbusters 3," but the funnyman didn't throw us much of a bone about the possible horror-comedy. When host Dave asked about the film, which mastermind Dan Aykroyd has been trying to get off the ground for some time now, Murray had this to say:

"That's about all they want to know at Cannes, too... But, um... They just don't have a really good script. It's hard. Even the second 'Ghostbusters' wasn't as much fun for me as the first one. It's hard to make a sequel. That first one was really funny. It was just so darn funny, it's hard for me... I always drag my feet on it, but you know, we'll try again."

Please don't tell us this is stuck in development hell forever,...

Blu-ray, DVD Release: The Artist
Blu-ray & DVD Release Date: June 26, 2012

Price: DVD $30.99, Blu-ray $35.99

Studio: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

2012 Best Picture Academy Award winner The Artist was called “a love letter to the movies” by The Los Angeles Times.

Silent and shot in black and white, the film is set in 1927 Hollywood and tells the story of George Valentin (Jean Dujardin, The Players), a silent movie star. The introduction of the talkies is leading to the end of Valentin’s career, but young extra Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo, A Knight’s Tale) is poised for major movie stardom. Their stories interlink.

The cast also stars John Goodman (The Big Lebowski), James Cromwell (Secretariat), Penelope Ann Miller (Carlito’s Way), Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange) and the Jack Russell terrier Uggie that we loved in Water for Elephants.

Rated PG-13, The Artist also won Oscars for Best Actor Oscar (Dujardin), Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius, Oss 117: Lost in Rio...

George Clooney in The Descendants (2011)
Oh, grow up! 'The Descendants,' 'The Artist' among winners for Aarp's Movies for Grownups Awards
George Clooney in The Descendants (2011)
Relax, this wasn’t an awards ceremony to honor the cinematic achievement that is Grown Ups. (That’s what the MTV Movie Awards is for!) Rather, it’s Aarp: The Magazine’s 11th Annual Movies for Grownups Awards, an event which rewards outstanding acting, directing and writing of filmmakers 50 and over and the movies your parents really, really liked over the past year. (Sorry, Shame!)

Echoing the Golden Globes, The Descendants and The Artist will walk away the victors at the Feb. 6 ceremony at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, as they’ve been named Best Movie for Grownups and Best Comedy for Grownups,...

Cannonball Read III Presents: Summer Reads
A couple of weeks ago, I sent the following message to this year's Cannonballers:

Now that summer is here (yes, I know not technically, but as far as I'm concerned summer begins when June does), I am thinking that it would be good to have a theme for some of the Cbr posts this summer: Summer Reads. I don't know about you, but summer vacations-especially when I go to the beach-are when I have some of my best opportunities to finally make a dent in my reading list. And I often make a trip to the library before heading out on vacation. I'd like to be able to give the Pajibans a bunch of recommendations as they may be looking to add to their summer reading lists.

Of course to do this, I need your help. I would like you to send me links to any reviews you've written for...

This week's new film events
Manchester Kurdish Film Festival, Manchester

Being a stateless region in the most volatile part of the Middle East, it's no surprise that the cinema of Kurdistan is full of conflicts and borders. The Quarter Of Scarecrows is an allegorical take on the Iran-Iraq war, while Son Of Babylon and Mando both use quests for missing family members to survey the current, devastated landscape. Kick Off, meanwhile, is based on real events at a refugee camp in a Kirkuk stadium where a man attempts to settle Kurdish-Iraqi differences through the international medium of football.

The Avengers 50th Anniversary Celebration, Chichester

Facing cold war danger with a very English combination of wit, judo, kinky boots and superior umbrella manufacture, The Avengers led where many spy thrillers still follow – not least James Bond, which first came to the screen a year later, and poached a few Avengers stars in its time.

Fresh Reads, Events and News
Time for a quick break from the news coming out of Cannes. With the emphasis on quick, here's a bit on what's going on elsewhere.

The new Offscreen features pieces on Luis Buñuel, Jesús Franco, Wristcutters: A Love Story, A Single Man and 3D. Word from Catherine Grant: "The second issue of the new Movie: A Journal of Film Criticism has just been posted online, with a wonderful looking Lang dossier, a fine tribute to the late Robin Wood, which takes the form of seven of his rarest pieces from the 1960s, 70s and 80s. And there's more besides on Susan Hayward and Vincente Minnelli." Speaking of Lang, you'll want to see David Bordwell's latest entry on how Lang shifts our alignment and...

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has changed the title of his upcoming film A Love Story to Not a Love Story

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has decided to change the title of his upcoming film that is under production at the moment. The film A Love Story, which is based on the Maria Susairaj case, will now be called Not A Love Story.

Reported a source ?Ramu had titled the film A Love Story, which is based on the murder of Neeraj Grover by Maria and her boyfriend Emile. The filmmaker initially thought that it was an apt title, however, during filming he decided that Not A Love Story suited the theme better?.

When Ram Gopal Varma was asked to comment on the same he said ?I was under the impression that the horrifying crime primarily arose out of the emotion of love. However, what remained at the...

Play Dead (2001)
Zombie Football Movie 'Play Dead' Makes Us Think Of Other Movie Genres We'd Like Zombies To Attack
Play Dead (2001)
The concept of zombie movies is certainly nothing new, but the undead are biting, clawing and charming their way into Hollywood in a variety of innovative new ways nowadays. These aren't your parents zombies, be they slow or fast moving, or created by virus or curse. Nope, now they're falling in love, giving Jane Austen novels new meaning and even... playing football?

That's right. The latest of these modern zombie tales to get brought to the big screen is an adaptation of Ryan Brown's supernatural thriller "Play Dead," which follows vengeful zombie football players in a football-obsessed Texas town. Variety reports that Mark Canton, producer for George Romero's "Land of the Dead," is producing the flick and "300" screenwriter Joe Schreiber will be adapting it.

Never did we think we'd see a zombie football flick, but now that the idea is out there, we have to admit it sounds like a touchdown.

Lindsay Lohan
Swift To Replace Lohan In Romantic Comedy?
Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan's legal woes appear to have given Taylor Swift her big movie break - the country sweetheart is the new favourite to replace the Mean Girls actress in a new film about a former child star finding success on a reality TV dating show.

Writer/producer Richard O'Sullivan initially offered Lohan the lead in his new film One Night With You after writing it with her in mind.

He told WENN, "It is ready-made for Lindsay... but we're proceeding with extreme caution while the Lohan family sorts through their issues during a very trying time."

Lohan has since served two stints in jail - the latest a 10-hour stay on Friday - and spent time in a court-ordered lockdown rehab. And now it looks as if producers have moved on from the troubled star.

A source says, "It appears the romantic comedy may finally be off the table for Lindsay Lohan. The producers had actually talked to Taylor Swift's agent a few months back about replacing Lindsay, but Taylor was in the middle of her tour.

"Now that Lindsay can't conquer her troubles, they're taking the offer back to Taylor."

It's the second major role Lohan has lost this year - in April, she was dropped from new movie The Other Side.

It won't be Swift's first acting gig - the Love Story singer has appeared on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and in the film Valentine's Day.

Letters to Juliet
Letters to Juliet

Directed by: Gary Winick

Cast: Amanda Seyfried, Vanessa Redgrave, Christopher Egan, Gael Garcia Bernal

Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins

Rating: PG

Release Date: May 14, 2010

Plot: A young woman on her honeymoon (Seyfried) helps an elderly woman (Redgrave) find her old Italian flame from 50 years ago. Along for the ride is the woman’s dreamy grandson (Egan), who can’t stomach the romantic journey because he’s “not a big believer of happy endings.”

Who’S It For?: For those who think “Romeo and Juliet” is not about pain, but instead about meeting some sort of Prince Charming.

Expectations: Back in February, I had nightmares about this one time I saw one of the worst trailers in recent memory for this movie called Letters to Juliet. Shamelessly, the preview laid out all three acts of the film, as if the final product wasn’t going to seem any less obvious.

pages from a cold island: Bright Future?
Above: Clio Bernard's The Arbor.

An entirely subjective rundown of the 20+ most-anticipated British films scheduled to have their first public screenings between April 20th and December 31st 2010.

1. Robinson In Ruins (dir. Patrick Keiller)

To call Robinson In Ruins “long awaited” doesn’t quite cover it, given that 13 years have now elapsed since Patrick Keiller’s last release, Robinson In Space(1997). The latter, a quizzically unclassifiable hybrid of political-sociological essay-film and landscape documentary with fictional elements, was perhaps the finest British film of the 1990s.

Like its predecessor London (1994)—also a masterpiece—it featured narration by Paul Scofield. With Scofield now sadly gone to a “better place,” Keiller (who in the interim has been busy with a stack of non-film projects) has turned to Vanessa Redgrave to provide the voiceover for what is apparently a “record of a journey made around southern England in 2008.”

Among his key inspirations, the following quote...

Movie Preview & Trailer: Letters To Juliet (2010), Starring Amanda Seyfried, Gael Garcia Bernal, Vanessa Redgrave
Amanda Seyfried is a major, major star now and we're just beginning to see how she's choosing to ride the wave after the worldwide success of Mamma Mia! (2008). She took the commercially safe route with the hit romantic weepie Dear John (2010) and then ventured into a riskier and more provocative role as a psychotic call girl in the indie drama Chloe (2010). Now, with Letters to Juliet (2010), it seems as if she's found something in between. Directed by Gary Winick, whose credits include the winsome 13 Going on 30 (2004) and the less successful Bride Wars (2009), Letters to Juliet casts Seyfried as Sophie, a young American woman who heads off to Italy, Verona to be specific, on vacation. While there, she comes across a wall at which people, many of them hopeless romantics, leave letters for Juliet -- as in the doomed heroine of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet -- asking for advice about their love lives.

Jay’s Year Of Movie Watching
So last year I joined Twitter and desperately struggled to figure out a good use for it. Assuming most people following my account might come from the Film Junk podcast, I thought it might be an idea platform to keep track of what films I've been watching and what ratings I give them. My first post was March 9th, 2009 with David Cronenberg's The Brood (3.5/4) and since then I've managed to check out a good number of great films over the last year. (Jacques Tati's Play Time and Wim Wender's Paris, Texas are definitely two stand outs on this list.) Many of these are first time viewings, but a there are also a lot of movies I just felt the urge to revisit. So what do you think? Any favourites? Have a look for yourself after the jump! The Brood, (Cronenberg, 1979) 3.5/4 Operation Crossbow (Anderson, 1965) 3.5/4 Watchmen, (Snyder, 2009) 3/4 Pontypool, (McDonald, 2008) 4/4 Pinocchio,...

HollywoodChicago.com’s Top 10 Films of 2009
Chicago – They came, we saw and in the end, who conquered? HollywoodChicago.com Senior Writer Patrick McDonald weighs in on the Top Ten of 2009. From the rich palette of choices, the challenge is always to winnow it down to ten.

This was a strong year, with many films in the “eleven spot” that would qualify easily for Top Ten consideration in any other year, including “An Education,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “Inglourious Basterds,” “The Hurt Locker,” “Red Cliff,” “Precious” and “Capitalism: A Love Story.”

But as the old saying goes, opinions are like a certain hole, everybody has one. Here is Patrick McDonald’s journey into that deep void…
